Report: Williams, Brown not very elusive

Earlier this week I wrote this column stating the Dolphins intentions of remaining a run-first team and telling you how intriguing that is, considering the Dolphins don't have any proven starting caliber running backs on the roster.

Yes, the club can always re-sign Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown or both. But I wrote that I wouldn't count on either being back.

This despite the fact coach Tony Sparano made very clear during his meeting with the media that he had no problems with the way Brown and Williams played last year. He actually said they played well.

Of course, I've reminded you time and again not to get too caught up in what the Dolphins say as much as what they do. If Williams and Brown played so well, how come the club opted not to re-sign either one before the labor agreement fell off the cliff into an abyss of pending legal challenges?

Well, the able folks at ProFootballFocus.com have crunched the numbers and they'll be happy to tell you why neither Williams nor Brown were priorities -- their numbers confirm what your eyes should have been telling you:

Neither Williams nor Brown were very good at gaining yardage on their own last season. Neither was good at breaking tackles or running away from tackles.

ProFootballFocus refers to this as its elusive rating. It measures a back's ability and performance independent of the blocking in front of him. This rating is a great equalizer in that it removes the advantages running backs that play behind great offensive lines have over those who do not.

PFF further states their elusive rating filters out coaching and playcalling, as well as the other 10 guys on the offense.

So where did Brown and Williams rate in 2010?

Bottom 20 of 58 rated backs.

Brown rated No. 48 of 58 with an elusive rating of 20.8. Keep in mind Ladell Betts had the worst elusive rating, according to PFF.com, with a 3.1. LeGarrette Blount led PFF's elusive ratings at 89.8.

Brown, the website said, gained 58.6 percent of his yards after contact or 2.2 yards per carry. That's bottom-third ordinary. Blount gained over 73 percent of his yards after contact and Oakland's Darren McFadden averaged 3.5 yards after contact.

For perspective, understand that Adrian Peterson gained 877 of his 1,298 after contact last season. Brown gained a total of 734 yards.

Ricky Williams fared better. But not much.

He ranked 40th of 58 backs, with an elusive rating of 26.7. He was in the same company with backs such as Willis McGahee and Michael Bush.

Williams averaged 2.5 yards per carry after contact, according to PFF. He had 404 yards after contact for the season -- meaning 60 percent of his yards came after contact.

The stats would suggest that if the Dolphins want to bring back the more effective back from last year, it would be Williams. The problem is no one can predict if Williams, who turns 34 in May, will simply fall of the table with wear because of his age or continue to provide semi-acceptable play.

The elusive rating article doesn't mention Brown or Williams except for one instance but it is interesting.

One more thing: DeAngelo Williams, the back many Dolphins fans are eyeing because he's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent is not on the 2010 report because he was injured much of the season. Williams had an elusive rating of 42.61 in 2009, which was 15th best in the NFL.

More like it.

Maybe a little of both. Parcells did it on the way out, Ireland after Parcells was gone.

I can hear it now, Mr Ross, I told Bill yadda, yadda but he wouldn't listen. LOL

As far as this Ireland/Sparano under the bus thing, as a GM, aren't you supposed look for what is best for the team? Just because Parcells brought them here together doesn't necessarily mean they have to go down in flames together. If it turns out Sparano is just outmatched as a head coach, why shouldn't the GM be involved with looking at replacements? The owner may have gone about it in an odd manner, but honestly, would you put your neck on the block for Sparano as a head coach?

Along those same lines, Ireland could go down in flames on his own.

@cocoajoe 6:38

I remember Parcell`s in his one interview before the 2010 draft clearly say that the Dolphins would be drafting players who could play in pads. I took it to mean that he absolutly hated the P.White pick in particular and was indirectly laying it at Ireland`s feet, alot of people have come on and said that the final say was his but I`m inclined to believe he let Ireland run with that draft and hated the results.

I for one would have loved to have been a fly in the wall during the Harbaugh interview to know what really happened, I don`t buy the explanation Ross gave at that interview with Sparano for a second. I think Harbaugh turned them down flat and I think, am about 50% sure it had to do with Ireland and the fact that everybody interviewd wanted him gone as G.M. Regardless of whether it`s right or wrong there joined at the hip and Ireland found out the hard way that if Sparano is replaced the new incoming coach wants nothing to do with him.

son especiales vallan a dormir!

Quick fix..

A lot has been made about the teams inability to score touchdowns in the red zone. I looked at a few game logs from last year to try and figure out a bigger picture as to why. My conclusion. We could not run the ball once we entered the scoring zone.

Situationaly we were horrible. Some of it was the use of the wildcat when the pass was working. Something that ALWAYS killed the momentum of drives, and IMO any rythm that the offense had going. Defenses had it easy knowing that on a shortened field that Henne wasn't accurate enough with consistancy to make plays. This totaly handcuffed the offense, as the defense could easily figure out what was coming.

The few times we had good success running the ball inside the red zone. We had our best offensive outputs of the season. (Tenn, Oak)
Now I'm not saying rushing touchdowns(I'm sure we were in the bottom of that category too) But I'm taliking about having the ability to tale some pressure of the offense, and keeping the defense on its toes. If we are to be more effective this year. We will have to find away to play ahead of the chains inside this area.

Oh yeah. The playcalling sucked. FACT

fin4life............ DAYING BREED WAS FAKING ME ALL DAY, A KID 8 YEARS OLD WOULD FIGURE THIS OUT...I AM AMAZED HOW CAN'T FIGURE THIS ONE OUT..... HE'S TALKING TO HIMSELF ALL DAY . I NEVER SPEAK THAT DUMB ..............PEACE .

MY NEW WORKING SHOES ARE GREAT,I FEEL LIKE HENNE RUNNING AND SCORING TD .

I DO BELIEVE THAT DYINGBREED SITS ALL DAY THINKING ABOUT NICE GOOD NAMES LIKE STANZI ,THEN ADVICE US TO DRAFT THE GUY BASED ON HIS NAME THEN WHEN THE STORY GETS OLD HE GOES ,WE MAY DRAFT THIS OTHER GUY AND PICKS ANOTHER NAME.

NOTICE HOW HE CHANGED HIS VIEW ABOUT INGRAM AFTER THE STORY GETS OLD .

I have always believed that most People don't know what they are doing.

db wants us to play follow the leader and follow him around like puppy dogs. ingram is what will open the offense up, then newton is what will open the offense up, then kaepernick, then stanzi, then back to ingram and now pouncey. next week humpty dumpty.

CARLITO,

RIGHT ON AND THE DONKEYS FOLLOW THE DRUNK GUY.HE'S NOT A REAL FAN ..HE'S A SABOTAGE GUY ....HE MAKES YOU TALK TO HIM ABOUT HIS PICKS AND IF YOU PICK SOME ONE ELSE HE ANSWER W/INSULT AND ENDS HIS POST WITH............LOL AS IF HE'S A HAPPY GUY .

chemplanes spraying large white toxic plumes aka chemtrails are elusive from mainstream media
In fact the subject is forbidden to be discussed or written about in the mainstream media with extreme prejudice

It would be childish to assume that BP is not having any influence on this Draft. And that is good.

Well, Home, then you might as well shut up.

AL0-con-us,

Now youre flat out lying on me because I busted you in the lie where you twice posted you were going to work. A couple hours later youre still here blogging and insulting others as "welfare recipients.

ALoconus,

I did once like you because I didnt take you seriously. Now that youre outright lying on me and you know that you are, I have now drawn the line with you.

No longer will I reply to you, though I may refer to your true name ALO-CON-US as opportunity permits. Dude you are scum of scum and I no longer wish to have anymore personal correspondence with you on any level.

Think what you wish, say what you must, do what you will. I now consider you total scum that I can totally do without. Dude to even call you retard is a total injustice done to even such a hurtful term. Youre not even deserving enough to even be whispered as such.

GOOD RIDDANCE BIAL BOY!

DB,

YOU PLAY TOO MANY GAMES.I CAN'T KEEP UP WIITH YOU...YOU HAVE THE WHOLE DAY TO PLAY AND I AN NOT UP TO IT..........

POUNCY ?

AND I AM NOT UP TO IT

A lot of interesting threads today.

Fin4life, I too would like to know what really happened with Harbaugh and why exactly Ross is so tied to Ireland.

IMO the Dolphins are playing catch up because the trifecta was behind the speed curve. It will take some time to address that on the roster unless Ireland pulls off the perfect draft.

The red zone scoring issue is complex.

It is part poor O-line play, part terrible play calling, part offensive philosophy.

IMO in combination this red zone problem is not going away easy or quick.

Hopefully i am wrong and we will see a vast improvement next season.

I just don't think we are going to see a lot of TD's in general as long as Sparano is the HC.

I JUST ATE MY DINNER;

KOREAN TAKE OUT ....

THEIR BEEF IS SO GOOD AND FULL OF MARBLE NOT LIKE OUR BEEF THAT YOU BUY AT THE STORE AND HAS NO MARBLE AT ALL .

I know nothing abot Korea but I know a bit about Kobe beef.

SAME THING OSCAR,THEY USE SAME KOBE BEEF .

Oregon Phin...It would be handy if Henne could master throwing the fade. Those soft touch passes aren't his specialty. We have a weapon that most teams cannot defend against. It would make sense to try and figure a way to use it to our advantage

What I know about Kobe beef is that those cheap med-reps never invited me to eat it.

Ok, where is all the fans who claimed RONNIE BROWN IS AN ELITE RB, been saying it for years..... He SUCKS, no speed, does not break tackles, nothing....... he can dance and loose yards behind the line of scrimmage like no other RB ever!!!! thats for sure

Next year is when Mr.Ireland will be sweating bullets.

avispa,
the entire sentinel site is sad.

DD,

I do not recall Henning even calling the fade route for BM last year.

Another aspect is opposing teams knew BM was really the only weapon the Dolphins had and routinely doubled him in the red zone.

I recall BM expressing frustration about Henne not throwing it up to him even against double coverage. Something about how BM is open even when he looks like he isnt.

IMO Henne was really placed in a impossible situation there. The coaches are hammering him about never taking a chance, he sees BM is doubled then the WR rips him for not throwing it up.

Henne is a company guy and believes checking down is always the better move. I don't see that demand for the check down changing with Sparano no matter what QB is in there.

Who gives a fu-k if you are not up to it.

LOL At Just.Incred, No bro, I dont roll like that, BTW, Havent heard anything from the plumber from Jersey since you put the beat down on him....Thank you for the community service...LOL

Posted by: Cuban Menace | March 25, 2011 at 10:46 AM

Cuban when did JUSTIN put a beatdown on NJ? Please tell us, some of us dont know.

Oregon...I can't excuse the Phins for not being able to execute against double teams. I'm sure that Marshall isn't the onlt reciever that gets double teamed in the red zone. In fact, this should free up other pass catcher with favorable matchups.

To my earlier point. If we had any running threat down there. It would loosen up what is already a tight space.

Darryl D,

I guess I see your point. I still think Henne is a company guy.

What is all this BS about NJ? What are your thoughts?

I also read where this NJ guy got suspended at the Sun Sentinel. How pathetic!

Oregon...I think all this stuff about the Sentinel, and people who don't blog here is silly. I have no problem with any of those guys, I even read their stuff. I just choose not to post there much. I try and ignore it. Those folks are on the same team, just a different forum. Let it be. They don't bother us, why worry about them?

As far as NJ Phin Fan..I never had a problem with him. Like i said it is a blog. People can voice their opinions. If people feel this is a junior high popularity contest, or they will be more right about a certain topic. Good for them. I choose to stay out of it. This said. I think that for the good of both blogs we should end this jibber jabber. It is meaningless.

Darryl, one of the best plays in the Red Zone is the QB running, either on a draw, or faking and around.

Let them get fuc-ed, Darryl, I have learned long ago that in dealing with People you have to let them crash.

Well put Darryl. I too have read a little over at the Sentinel. NJ seems to have anger issues and ego problems. IMHO. With that said I too prefer to stay out of that arena. GO PHINS!!!

Oscar Baboso you like to say "Fck" alot. You sound tough!

NJ got what he desrved at the sentinel, sus[pended

lilmikeyp, in real Space I seem very soft.

Oscar..I have to disagree. I think that the less the quarterback has to run in all of that traffic the better. Every now and then it is fine. But I would not want to see the base offense that is revolved around the quarterback running the ball. It is a recipe for disaster. It is an oportunity for the defense to get even another shot on your most important player on the field. The defenders are to big, to fast to continually put your quarterback in those situations. It may work in certain examples, even over a season. But eventually the quarterback is going to get smoked.

Oscar please refrain from telling me to shut up when I was not addressing you. Understand English?

Darryl, like you said, every now and then. That's why it is important for the QB to call plays in the Red Zone, I don't want to be a bore, but Griese had the defense completely off balance. Sometimes a quick snap, some other times he would repeat the hut-hut and take them offsides. Then, when he got to the Red Zone, he got them at his Mescy.

It is much better not to know me in real Space.

Again reads like you and something stupid you`d say at this point if it isn`t you then you really only have yourself to blame, it`s easy put up something stupid only a 5 year old would write and blame it on "Aloco"

The only reason I even brought him up was because your constantly bringing him up and busting his chops, when I`ve never even seen him utter a peep about you, seems you can dish it out but not take it.

This will be the last thing I post about the subject or you for that matter, as far as taking shots at me then have at it. At the end of the day what some cook at IHOP says makes absolutly no difference to me, so do me a favor and go get your inflatable Girlfriend and work off some of that pent up aggression.

Wow,
Very strange.

These 3 posts were not written by me.
WTF is that!
Who would bother to imposter someone else and why?

In reading the content I don't see anything extreme it's just why?

There are people on this blog who are extreme and arrogant but this sort of imposturing leaves me not wanting to be a part of this at all.
Get a life!

I will pay no attention to these things. In any case, it's about Time that we get a smart QB.

I'd rather take Locker, Mallet, Ponder, and Dalton over Kolb

Oregon,

I hear you it`s been going on for about 2 weeks now and finaly it upset me enough that I went and posted something about it. The funny thing is how many people are now posting that somebody is using there screen name as well, it`s really getting to the point were it`s not fun coming on here cause instead of talking Football everbody is distracted by this B.S. !

It really is so weird.

What is going on? Armando. Please do something to put this garbage to an end. Oregon DP. I don't blame you. I think I'll hang it up tonight.

@ Oregon, Oscar and DD,

I posted this earlier and wonder what you guys think

I know everybody is going to give me 100 reasons why they hate this idea but I still insist that VY is an option worth exploring and here`s why.

1) He had a roster bonus of 4.5 due this month it`s on hold until the CBA is settled but I read it has to be paid upon new labor agreement when he will be cut. He also had a base of 8.8 for the season that`s 13.3 Mil nobody is going to pay him, you don`t think that has his attention and serves as all the motivation he needs.

2) His # aren`t the best but he seems to get it done when his head is in the game and he didn`t exactly have the best rec. or T.E.`s to play with either in all fairness.Remember he didn`t get his shot at playing with CJ till last season and together they started out well before VY got hurt.

3) An incredible athlete who has proven he knows what to do with the Football in the NFL, still a big if with Cam. In a new setting were his HC isn`t looking to bench him constantly, which Fisher was then the sky could be the limmit there dislike for each other is well known given Fisher never wanted him it was owner Bud Adams who still lives in Houston, remember they were the Oilers, who fell in love with VY

Beerphin,

I just dont know what it is exactly but I really do not want to see Kolb become a Dolphin.

He didnt do anything as an Eagle, I feel he is over hyped PLUS the Eagles will want way too much for him.

I just wish Ireland had the balls to trade for VY.

Vince is the only FA QB I want to see as a Dolphin. It's just my opinion but that's how I feel.

OREGON IS A BAD GAY LIAR YU BLOGG DAT GARBAGE U LUV THAT NJ PHOOL

sleeper mock
1st Derek Sherrod OT/G
2nd Marcus Cannon OT/G
3rd Jordan Cameron TE
4th Chris Conte DB/FS
5th Henry Hynoski FB
6th Tyrod Taylor QB/WR
6th Mario Fannin RB
7th LeStar Jean WR
7th Nic Grigsby RB

dang that is the worst mock i've seen.

Sherrod has stated he wants to play LT but if he could be convinced to move to LG he'd be a real force inside. He has all the intangibles and he knows most scouts see him as an ideal interior lineman but could possibly be a great starter at LT. It'd take convincing for sure. Marcus Cannon has probowl RG written all over him. keep Jerry and Garner as backups and Incognito starting at C with Berger backing him up... OLine fixed

oregon,
I'd rather see Palmer than VY. But agreed on VY over Kolb. I'd take Flynn over Kolb. Maybe it's just their asking price is way too high. 3rd rd pick yea... but a 1st or 2nd theres no way I'd do it
