Dolphins to host Newton,Gabbert this weekend

Maybe the Dolphins think they know something. Maybe they actually do know something. Maybe Cam Newton's draft stock will drop like a bear market and he will be available with the 15th overall selection of the first round -- the pick the Dolphins hold in the April 28 draft.

Maybe that is the reason the team is hosting a private workout with Auburn QB Cam Newton this weekend in South Florida, according to NFL.com. I am furthermore reporting Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert will also have a visit and work out for the team this weekend.

[Update: These visits-workouts are not at Miami's facility in Davie, FL. The team will fly to meet with the players rather than the other way around.]

Newton and Gabbert are among several quarterbacks this space has reported will share private workouts with the Dolphins. Colin Kaepernick is another. Ricky Stanzi is another. Tyrod Taylor is another.

But unlike those others, Newton and Gabbert are expected to go poof by the time the draft is out of the first 10 picks in the first round. Denver might take one at No. 2, Buffalo coach Chan Gailey said this week he loves both and the Bills hold the No. 3 pick. Tennessee (No. 8), Washington (10) and Minnesota (12) all might want a QB.

So what, I wonder, makes the Dolphins think either might be available when they draft at No. 15?

The possibility, my hope, is that maybe all the hype about Newton going early is just that. Hype. And maybe his lack of experience, his need to learn to read defenses and move safeties, his need to learn the pro-style footwork, all the things that make Newton a project, will push him down.

But all the way to the Dolphins?

Maybe they know something. But I get the feeling, more likely they are just covering their bases and when all is done, they will watch helplessly as Newton gets picked before they get a turn.

And while the club is indeed interested in Newton and just about every quarterback possibility out there -- they have studied them all -- coach Tony Sparano continued to do his best earlier this week to talk up incumbent Chad Henne.

That's because he was asked about Henne. Sparano said at the owner's meetings that Henne improved last season. (I am trying to write this with a straight face.)

"He completed a higher percentage of intermediate passes, which doesn’t make the fans happy and doesn’t make evidently a lot of people happy, but it should because it's a sign of progress," Sparano said Tuesday from the annual NFL owners' meeting.

"Other areas I thought he improved on was his ability to move in the pocket and create space. When you look at the number of sacks we had and the number of sacks avoided, the throwaways, those were the areas that he improved on."

Yes, but coach ... Henne stunk on long throws. Think the opener in which he missed Brandon Marshall by a mile. Think the underthrow the following week. Think the missed opportunity to hit a long TD against Cleveland. Think the missed throws of Brian Hartline in the Jets and Patriots games.

"Some of that is on us for the number of opportunities," Sparano said. "There's just a lot of factors, but when you get the green light, you’ve got to make the play, and Chad would tell you that."

Correct.

Folks, we have a pretty good nucleus, therefore the cake has been baked. There is enough available in 2011's draft to place the icing on the cake

Posted by: DyingBreed | March 24, 2011 at 06:14 PM

But Breed, The chefs are Tony(Fist pump)S. And his lil friend Jeff Ireland, They gonna burn that cake buddy..... 3 and 13 here we come..(1 and 8 in a strike shorten season)......

Cuban, Armando was a Henne lover last year and told me I was crazy for criticizing Henne in preseason. This was via emails so you guys didn't see the exchanges. So he has been a Henne supporter but has seen the facts. The only Henne supporter left, Odin, my good friend whose opinion we all enjoy! Hey, I hope Henne has an epiphany! I hope he proves me wrong! But just in case, the Dolphins need another Marino!

DyingBreed, great comment, you're on fire, keep typing!!!

CUBAN IS FUNNY

@ Cuban and DB,

The real question would be why does DB continually take both sides of an argument...

I am all for minds being changes and another posters typing points that make me say HMMMMM....and possibly changing my mind.....

but to me...arguing both sides doesn't make you right....it just makes you a poster that argues both sides.....

hey
we're on the clock tomorrow on "path to the draft". can't wait to here it. "miami's best option is to pick ingram at #15."

KRIS THIS BLOG IS FOR PEOPLE THAT WORSHIP DYING BREED EVEN IF HE FLIPFLOPS AFTER EVERY COCKTAIL.

KRIS,

YOU HAVE A VALID POINT ABOUT DB ,STILL HE HAS GOOD POSTS TODAY AND WE SHOULD APPLUDE HIM .

PS....... DYING BREED IS VERY GOOD AT FOOTBALL , EVEN IF HE HAS NO PRINCIPLES OR OPINION BUT KNOWLEDGE ..,,,,,,,,

Kris, You know "FOX NEWS" Does the same thing, Maybe breed works for FOX, Maybe he's Bill O'Reilly.... Who knows??

FAKE ALoco @ 6;36 pm

CUBAN is a gypsy blogger .

LIL Aloco, What's a "Gypsy Blogger"???????

FAKE ALoco @ 6:38 pm

GYPSY...... A PERSON WHO HAS NO HOME OR LOYLTY ,HE GOES AFTER THE MONEY ONLY ............... LIKE SOME NFL COACHES .

Fake Aloco...Aloco...and Cuban....

I don't think anybody can challenge DB's football knowledge...he is clearly a student of the game (NFL)....

He is so knowledgeable that he argues both sides of most arguments with equal vigor....and accuracy.....

but its hard to take a counter argument against DB...because he has already done it to himself...

but either way....DB's knowledge is well respected on here....as it should be

finfan4life... I believe you misunderstood my point when I commented at 3:27 conc3erning having a great O-line in front of him...

Your reply (just below) written @ 3:27 is accurate IMO...

"Emmit sometimes doesn't get his due, he holds FLA. High School record with over 8,900 all purpose yards" ..... "I`d say he was a pretty good player".

Posted by: fin4life | March 24, 2011 at 03:37 PM
----------------------------------------

In my statement I said that Emmit was a fine tail back. I feel he earned every yard he ran and I feel Dallas and Jimmy Johnson were damn smart for drafting him. What I also said was I feel no matter who played behind that great line, their game was going to be elevated to a whole new gear. And I feel that is fleshed out by the players of 93, 94 and 96.

I meant Emmit no disrespect. Football is a team sport... Without players who are competitors around you... you will get exposed if you have any weakness. I feel Emmit had very few weaknesses.. so that O-line even gained from his being there. Dallas in the Early to Mid 90's was a damn well built football team... and the players were from the right schools and had the right coach at that time.

OMG, All these fake aloco's.............. As Slim Shaddy would say "Will the real Aloco please stand up, Please stand up".......

I think Lil Aloco(Or fake aloco)(Who really knows) Just called me a prostitute......LOL

Out of all those qbs, cam newton is the only one id want on my team, and I do, but he will be gone. Are we seriously not trying out mallet (the best qb in the draft) or Jake locker (couldve fought Bradford last year for the one.....

I got a question that you guys can chose to answer or ignore...

WHY GABBERT???

He wasn't even in the 1st rd QB until Luck decided he was going back to school....

Now he is the consensus #1......Why is that??

He coudn't crack the top 4 before that...now he is the un-questioned #1 QB in the draft.....you guys don't think there is anything wrong with that>>

January top QB picks...

Luck
Newton
Locker
Mallett

Am I wrong?

and BTW...he comes from the same SPREAD OFFENSE that many use to condem NEWTON.....

Not a pro style offense like Mallett

he..... being Gabbert

You guys can talk all of the crap you want about Newton. He is a physical freak. And like Mike Vick will scare the bejesus out of every d. And he scores touchdowns.

Once again DRAFT A GUY THAT SCORES. OR A GUY THAT IS ON THE FIELD WHEN HIS TEAM SCORES. Cam Newton started in his second year not because he kissed butt. It is because HE CAN SCORE TD'S.

Stats mean little on the field. TD's count. If you look at the Dophins stats from last year we should have finished with at least 10 wins. But look at the touchdowns and you see the difference.

dmb
Remember the Dolphins don't draft quarterbacks who haven't started for 4 years. They avoid players with ethic problems, because of the chance there are off field issues.

None of the quarterbacks in this draft are good values in the first round. We need starter material from the first and second rounds to have a good draft.

Free agency is the only option this year for quarterback, and maybe drafting a project quarterback in the third round.

I`ve been reading the last hour`s posts and I gotta say that everybody needs to stop it with the whole, "Marino had character issues as well it`s how he fell to the bottom of the 1st. round" There is no comparing him and Mallet for a couple of glaring reasons.

Dan Marino was a once in a lifetime talent Mallet is a talent with potential. Marino was rumored to be a pothead, Mallet of sporting Cocaine mustache`s. Marino slides all the way to 27th pick in 83 because Pitt. passed on him needing a Q.B. at pick 14 (Bradshaw retired) causing everybody to wonder what they knew that hadn`t been made public, since he was in there backyard, without that nagging doubt he never falls to us.

Marino had a bad Sr. season after being a Hiesman finalist as a Jr. (Hershal Walker one it) causing some to wonder about his work ethic but never his talent, he didn`t develope his quick release in Miami and was as cool as the other side of the pillow in the pocket. The negatives on Mallet from at least 3 mock reports I`ve read is his propensity for unraveling under pressure.

Stop the comparisons if all you have to go on is the Marino of the 90`s, it`s an insult to anybody that remembers the Marino of the early 80`s !!!!! The Marino of the early 80`s aside from his quick release could roll out of the pocket with the best of them, it`s how he beat the 85 Bears and there 46 D on Monday night.

There is no comparison !!! Not today, not ever !! It`s B.S. !!!!

hawk we have 2 drafts before we play a season. so we can pick alot of players if we draft right for 2012

marino dropped in the draft cause there were whispers of cocaine use

its true marino was viewed just like mallet now. mallet can throw the ball better than any qb in this draft thats whats most important. he should be the first qb taken the others are bigger gambles.

Just some random facts this column missed: Brandon Marshall can't catch. Miami's offense had no running game. Miami's offensive coaches were boring and predictable. The Offensive line sucked. The NFL is where Heisman QB's go to die.

Let's hope Cam is gone when we pick!!!

@bill conners,

I actually remember that draft and anybody at least 10 years old at the time knows the story, he was supposedly seen hanging at frat houses smoking weed, at no time was coke even braught up, get your facts straight and go sell that spin to somebody else, as far as his slide goes alot can be attributed to Chuck Noll who wanted a DT to replace Mean Joe and thought he could do it with Sr.Sack Gabe Rivera, while replacing Bradshaw with back ups Cliff Stoudt and Mark Malone, it`s were his freefall strarted after Elway and Kelley came of the board.

I wouldn't put a 1st round grade on ANY of the QB's in this draft.

Gabbert came out early because this class is so weak. He, and the smart people advising him, already know that next year, barring a miracle season, he wouldn't even crack the 1st round. He has a lot of the same question marks Newton has. Spread offense, no snaps from center, only started 2 seasons of Div. 1 ball and in his final season threw less TD's and more Int's. Very inconsistent in the face of pressure.

Newton started for 1 season of Div.1 Football. In addition to Shotgun only, One receiver reads and very limited experience in the spread, he's got a curious(to be polite)egotistical as well "quirks" every step of the way:

2010: An NCAA investigation determined Newton's father tried to sell his son's services to Mississippi State during his recruitment.

2008: Arrested on felony charges of larceny and obstruction of justice for allegedly stealing a Dell laptop from a dorm room and throwing it out the window when University Police Department officers visited his dorm, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Newton was subsequently suspended from the team. All charges were dropped after he completed a pre-trial diversion program.

Locker seems to me to be as good if not better prospect than Gabbert or Newton. If it weren't for obvious inconsistent play and troubles with mechanics, he would undoubtedly be head and shoulders above the rest.

Mallet is the most pro ready of the 4. But what you see now, is all you're ever going to get. Mallet's skill set has maxed out some time ago. Comes apart like a cheap watch when facing pressure. I know I don't even have to go into the ebonics spewing head case or the failure to even deny drug use. Save all the leaf and Leinart comparisons.

The point is, I wouldn't take the chance of spending a 1st round pick expecting any of these guys to be that franchise QB. You think Henne's been bad up to this point? Just wait until you see these guys at the next level.

In any somewhat normal QB class, these 4 would be lucky to get 2nd round grades!

Sign a Vet, draft a Stanzi!!!!

I think Hennes skill set maxed out long before he was a dolphin.

By the way, I'm going to re post an excerpt from my last post.

This was something I remembered reading but had totally forgotten about!

I'm sure he won't have to worry about thieving once he signs his shiny new NFL contract, but it does speak volumes as to his true character.

Hey!

All you Newton lovers!

Let THAT marinate for a second!

Fin4life,

COMPLETE Kudos on the defense of Marino!

What fin4life said:

There is no comparison !!! Not today, not ever !! It`s B.S. !!!!

ValHalla!!!!

PS: I like the way you use those "Exclamation" points-LOL!!!!

Henne lovers or haters, regardless he has only this season to prove himself if he's to remain a Dolphin. This is the last year of his rookie contract.

So its boom or bust for him. If he fails to earn the starting qb position or earns it and continue to struggle. He will be on the fa market in 2012 with very few suitors except for those who would see him as a backup qb only.

This maybe Henne's last season to prove he can be a legit and highly effective nfl starter.

Read that someone here thinks I could be Bill O'Reilly of Fox News. Believe me, given a choice I would far rather be the dike Rachael Meadows of Msnbc. LOL.............

odinseye so I guess you are saying nobody should have drafted Lawrence Taylor or Ray Lewis either, based on character issues. Winning is often cruel, fact of life.

carl o,

I dont remember Lawrence Taylor or Ray Lewis having character issues upon entering the draft. Thier character issues didnt flare up until long into thier pro careers.

So whats your point?

I think Hennes skill set maxed out long before he was a dolphin.

While I'm no spokesperson for the blog or anything like that, I'd just like to thank you for that very informative and well thought out post!

What's more, I respect and support your right to an opinion.

Even if that opinion is wrong and matters not, I respect and support your right to be wrong!

As my old Buddy NJ PHIN FAN would say:

Thanks for stopping by!

DB,

YOU RATHER BE LESBIAN ? YOU MAY HAVE A POINT .SO YOU CAN HAVE IT BOTH WAYS .

If you are not going to pick a talented player based on character issues, then why would you keep a talented player once the character issues are exposed? Rape, Murder, Wife Beating, Drugs, Theft, Assault. Its hypocritical to say the least.

Guys, though I have a #15 draft scenario. I'm more inclined to believe it will be the trade back for an extra 3rd rd pick that'll be most likely to happen.

So this is what I would love to see happen:

1. Mike Pouncey
3. Titus Young/Jernell Jernigan
3. Kendall Hunter
4. Ricky Stanzi
5. Kendric Burney/DJ Williams/Rob Housler (Availabilty)
6. Emmanuel Moody
7. Phillip Livas

Also in the trade back scenario I would consider taking Ryan Williams 1st rd. Doing this, I would take cb Jimmy Smith over Kendall Hunter 3rd rd if Smith is still there.

CARL O.... GREAT POSTS @ 8;59 ............

ALoco,

Thats why I would rather be lesbian, not to have it both ways. It fortifies my desire to have no plans with a man. LOL.............

ODIN....... FUNNY POST @ 9;04

odinseye so I guess you are saying nobody should have drafted Lawrence Taylor or Ray Lewis either, based on character issues. Winning is often cruel, fact of life.

Carlo,

While I realize Dying Breed is 100% accurate in his response to you and there's really nothing more needed, I can't resist dummying it down for you:

Plain and Simple - Newton ain't no Lawrence Taylor or Ray Lewis!

C'mon MAN!!!!

@DB 9:02

carl o. must be some guy who started watching the game yesterday, L.T. was a very safe pick before getting turned out in the N.Y.C. nightlife. Ray Lewis let the wrong guy get in his limo after the SB, he didn`t actually kill anybody, I read alot of posts that he`s a murderer and wonder if they don`t know what happened ? he was charged with aiding and abetting after the comission of a felony murder, there is a difference between that and actually having killed someone, doesn`t meen he is without guilt but it`s not murder.

@odin 9:11

Kudos to you my friend ! like Jimmy Johnson use to say "I`d draft thr devil himself if I thought he was a playmaker" and made good on it till he got to Miami.

fin4life,

carl o is comparing Lewis and Taylor who did not have character flaws entering the draft. To Newton who does.

I guess he was looking for something to support his argument and ended up with a handful of dog doo-doo instead.

DB IS GOLD MINE OF A BLOGGER AND I MEAN THAT .

ODIN IS A COAL MINE OF A BLOGGER .

I get it. One has to join the 'club' here to not be laughed at. As though all of your posts here are beyond reproach.

I would like to thank all of you together for convincing me blogging is the electronic equivalent of talking to a wall. You'll all be thrilled to know I won't be back.

DB.... I MUST SAY NEWTON HAVE CHARACTER ISSUES DUE TO THE TIME WE LIVE IN ,WHEN TAYLOR ENTERD THE DRAFT WE DIDN'T HAVE FIX NEWS,THE INTERNET AND BLOGS .

CARL O,

I LIKED YOUR POSTS..WE LIVE IN DIFFERENT ERA .DON'T BE UPSET W/DB .HE HAS GOOD HEART .....WE LIVE IN A TIME SO DIFFERENT THAN WHEN TAYLOR CAME OUT THE DRAFT .

I HOPE YOU COME BACK ,WE R NOT THE SS ...

DB,

YOUR GANG PUSHED CARL O OUT ,IF YOU DON'T AGREE W/HIM ,AT LEAST LEAVE HIM ALONE .HE HAS HIS OWN IDEAS AND OPINIONS .

Earlier CraigM was mentioning giving upn our 2012 2nd rd'er to draft Kaepernick 2nd rd.

My reluctance to him was if we gave up our 2012 2nd rd pick. It makes far better sense doing it to acquire Vince Young.

Young's already a proven winner at the nfl qb position and he's still young with plenty of upside left. So why continue the 2nd rd draft pick drought by mortgaging for a unproven on the nfl qb who doesnt come from a pro style offense to boot. LOL.................

LOL.........PLEASE LESS OF IT .

Dying Breed...

Thanks for a clear and insightful post concerning Chad Henne at 8:55. I believe we all have said just about all that can be said, either by cutting the young man to ribbons, or to defending him when he needs to hear some constructive criticism.
I believe Sparano will give him his opportunity and that Henne will have a different system to show whether or not he can improve. The thing is, it would be poor management to not allow a guy you have invested both a second round draft pick and hundreds of hours of coaching and developmental effort in. As you pointed out, he is in the last year of his Rookie contract, Miami has nothing to lose and should he improve... everything to gain.

I really can't see it happening without Henne literally snapping out of a coma, but it would be great for both Henne and the team if he could get his act together far enough to at least secure a back-up role should Miami find a suitable replacement. I can't help but hope for the best but expect the probable.

If you are not going to pick a talented player based on character issues, then why would you keep a talented player once the character issues are exposed? Rape, Murder, Wife Beating, Drugs, Theft, Assault. Its hypocritical to say the least.

Posted by: carl o. | March 24, 2011 at 09:08 PM

First of all Carlo, let me apologize for my rudeness. I thought you were just trolling, my bad.

Seriously, if you wanted to debate and defend Newton's character issues, you didn't have to come at me "sideways" just mimicking what I said by switching Henne's name for Newtons.

I wouldn't not draft a prospect because of, or BASED SOLEY on character issues.

I would take the character issues into consideration when making my overall decision. I would take into consideration the severity of the issue(s) and I would also try to ascertain whether or not the issue(s) combine to form a pattern of behaviour.

As far as keeping a player you already have, I wouldn't be hypocritical in the least.

I would try to get the player the appropriate help and guidance if he and I determined it was needed. I would also set up some "guidelines" that would help the player avoid any future instances.

Nothing hypocritical here My Man!

HENNE'S NEW CONTRACT WILL BE DONE IN A WEEK FOR 2 MORE YEARS AS SPARANO AND IRELAND . THE TALK IS ABOUT 5-7 MILLION A YEAR .

ALoco,

I was totally unaware that I have a gang. Can you please advise me where to pick up my share of the loot?

Because if I do have a gang "the b!tch sure aint got my money"! LOL..........
