Dolphins to host Newton,Gabbert this weekend

Maybe the Dolphins think they know something. Maybe they actually do know something. Maybe Cam Newton's draft stock will drop like a bear market and he will be available with the 15th overall selection of the first round -- the pick the Dolphins hold in the April 28 draft.

Maybe that is the reason the team is hosting a private workout with Auburn QB Cam Newton this weekend in South Florida, according to NFL.com. I am furthermore reporting Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert will also have a visit and work out for the team this weekend.

[Update: These visits-workouts are not at Miami's facility in Davie, FL. The team will fly to meet with the players rather than the other way around.]

Newton and Gabbert are among several quarterbacks this space has reported will share private workouts with the Dolphins. Colin Kaepernick is another. Ricky Stanzi is another. Tyrod Taylor is another.

But unlike those others, Newton and Gabbert are expected to go poof by the time the draft is out of the first 10 picks in the first round. Denver might take one at No. 2, Buffalo coach Chan Gailey said this week he loves both and the Bills hold the No. 3 pick. Tennessee (No. 8), Washington (10) and Minnesota (12) all might want a QB.

So what, I wonder, makes the Dolphins think either might be available when they draft at No. 15?

The possibility, my hope, is that maybe all the hype about Newton going early is just that. Hype. And maybe his lack of experience, his need to learn to read defenses and move safeties, his need to learn the pro-style footwork, all the things that make Newton a project, will push him down.

But all the way to the Dolphins?

Maybe they know something. But I get the feeling, more likely they are just covering their bases and when all is done, they will watch helplessly as Newton gets picked before they get a turn.

And while the club is indeed interested in Newton and just about every quarterback possibility out there -- they have studied them all -- coach Tony Sparano continued to do his best earlier this week to talk up incumbent Chad Henne.

That's because he was asked about Henne. Sparano said at the owner's meetings that Henne improved last season. (I am trying to write this with a straight face.)

"He completed a higher percentage of intermediate passes, which doesn’t make the fans happy and doesn’t make evidently a lot of people happy, but it should because it's a sign of progress," Sparano said Tuesday from the annual NFL owners' meeting.

"Other areas I thought he improved on was his ability to move in the pocket and create space. When you look at the number of sacks we had and the number of sacks avoided, the throwaways, those were the areas that he improved on."

Yes, but coach ... Henne stunk on long throws. Think the opener in which he missed Brandon Marshall by a mile. Think the underthrow the following week. Think the missed opportunity to hit a long TD against Cleveland. Think the missed throws of Brian Hartline in the Jets and Patriots games.

"Some of that is on us for the number of opportunities," Sparano said. "There's just a lot of factors, but when you get the green light, you’ve got to make the play, and Chad would tell you that."

Correct.

ODIN,

HOW COME YOU TREATED A GUY WHO'S TRYING TO POST SOME THING WITH DISRESPECT AS DID DB ? WE R NOT THE GANG OF THE SS .

DB,

I MIGHT JUST SAY THAT YOUR WORDS CARRY A LOT OF WIEGHT ON THIS BLOG AND WHEN YOU KICK SOME ONE LIKE CARL O OUT WITH YOUR DISRESPECTABLE POSTS ,IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD FOR YOU AND US .HAVE SOME MODESTY AND BE HUMBLE .

derek4dolphins,

If Henne doesnt win the starting job and if he does, doesnt show significant improvement over last season. I can pretty much guarantee we let him walk coming into free agency.

It will be much better for Henne to start somewhere anew, especially if all of his free agency suitors only see his nfl future as a backup qb. Even if he were kept here as a backup he would still face intense scrutiny from disgruntled dolphin fans.

That's why I say if he doesnt cut the grade this season completeb change of scenery would be his best recourse.

French people smell like COAL MINES

ALoco,

Do you think Im stupid, you are carl o! LOL.....

Just another one of your imaginary post characters. Give a rest already, again you've been exposed ALoco/carl o! LOL...........

carl o.

If your still around, there isn`t a person on here who hasn`t met with opposing opinios from other bloggers, it`s not some good ol boy network or a frat house. Like odin likes to say your mixing apples and oranges when you compare the situation sorrounding L.T. and R.Lew to Mallet, on it`s face it`s baseless. We actually enjoy our debates more than you can imagine, if we all thought the same the blogg would suck | Aloco you know that cause if people took some of the things you said literally, you`d be blogging alone, LOL !

derek4dolphin,

I also believe we will draft a qb even if it's not until 4th rd(Stanzi). I also dont rule out VY or Palmer once a cba is reached.

So if those two things happen before the season starts, Henne may end up on the trading block before it ever begins.

In that scenario, I could definitely see Henne being shipped out on some sort of sign and trade deal for possibly a 3rd-5th rd'er. Which ever suitor would offer the most.

Dying Breed...

Agreed, particularly concerning Chad needing a change of scenery should his preseason go to shyt. I cannot see how he would ever establish enough traction to regain the starter position in Miami should he lose it.

I read am opinion piece by Armando on the MH Front sport page. In it he speaks about believing Carson Palmer being Miami's best fit in a QB Free Agent move. Its clear that Mr. Brown is a tough minded man and will not cave in a Schlong measuring contest. But Palmer does have one thing going for him... next year is the end of his deal.. which means he could walk away and Brown gets nothing but whatever provincial pick the league gives the Browns for losing him..

What do ya think...? Can Palmer be a better fit then Henne...? Can he regain some of the skill we saw in USC that has been thwarted by Cleveland...?

Thoughts...?

fin4life,

No matter how outrageous, ALoco knows we all will still love him regardless. After all, ALoco is this blog's best and greatest mascot.

He's sort of like the stray cat you tried to shoo away that kept on returning. So finally you give in and he has a new home. That's ALoco! LOL................

DB NOW ON HIS SABOTAGE POSTS STARTED WITHTRADING HENNE...LOL

DB TALKS LIKE A MAFIA BOSS NOT A FOOTBALL FAN ...

HE THINKS THIS BLOG BELONGS TO HIM..LOL

Aloco,

You messin wit ME?

Whuts Good din? Whazzup!

Keep dat shyt up Bu-oy and me and the Natural Gang(Dying Breed-fin4life)come over yo house and smash dat keyboard UP!

Whoop! Whoop!

PS: DB Dawg, Fin4life, now dat we a gang, Who ya'll wanna beat down nex?!

the three stooges will not do anything with newton or gabbert. all they are going to do is trade down to get that second round pick back as usual. why are they wasting everyon's time again. oh yeah cause they are the three stooges! (ross, sparano, ireland and if you want a fourth, henne)!

derek4dolphin,

If I had to choose which had the greatest chance to become a dolphin this season, I would definitively choose Young over Palmer.

For one, Young would come far cheaper because thier ownership already announced he'll be let go. Two, with the schlong contest going on between Brown and Palmer. Brown's asking price even if he did cave in a little would be so high no other team would want to deal anyway.

Brown strikes me as the kind guy that would rather prove his point. Even if it meant Palmer walking the following season and getting absolutely nothing.

That's the huge risk you run of having a guy so old he has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel running your franchise. Hate to say it but Bengal fan best hope is he has both feet in the grave before the start of the 2011 nfl season.

dolphin77=dyingbreed.

It's been a rough crowd here the last couple of nights. Is it the moon? Just catching up on tonights posts. Regarding Carl O, he never once mentioned Newton or compared him to Taylor from what I can see. I 'think' he was just making a general statement... if you are going to avoid a player (as in any player) because of character issues, then is it not hypocritical to keep a player on board once they show the same type of character issues that would have made you avoid them in the first place? It was a fair comment. This regime wouldn't draft a wife beater but if a player on the team beats their wife they look the other way, as most organizations do.

Mr. Carl... you see, you have someone on your side after all.

odinseye,

Since it has been officially clarified ALoco's official "blog mascot". Maybe we should all officially began calling ourselves the "Bungling ALocos".

It's the most ego deflating proposition I could think of. Go "Bungling ALocos"! RAH-RAH-RAH!!!!!!!!!!! LOL...................

DB,
THE LEFTOVER FROM THE GANG OF DEFEAT ...LOL

WE ARE ALL OF ONE GANG. WE CALL OURSELVES "THE BUNGLING ALOCOS"! LOL...........

DB ,THE MAFIA BOSS ....GOOD NAME...I WILL USE EVERY TIME .

WHO WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE NEW "BUNGLING ALOCOS" CLUB"?

DB @9:49

I use to think Carson Palmer was gonna be another one of the greats until Keeno Von Offelman landed on his knees in the 05 play offs, still think to this day it was as cheap a shot as I`ve seen between 2 Div. foes fighting for Conf. supremacy.

He`s never been the same player since, I`ve seen games were he`s thrown some ducks in the air when threatened with the inside rush. The 09 play offs against the Jets comes to mind when Rex kept sending Harris and Scott on those inside blitzes, wondered if it wasn`t on purpose to be honest.

You couple that with the fact that he`s had a long list of nagging injuries thru his career since and you gotta ask yourself if we were to swing a deal what would be fair compensation for a player that given his history has his best days in the rear view mirror and seems to be erroding with every season. think if your going to go the FA route your earlier post regarding VY and his youth, upside as opposed to his character flaws seem a better high risk high reward scenario, if it fails oh well but if it works it pays huge dividends. It`s not like we haven`t rolled the dice on lesser talents.

DB THE BULLY , TRYING TO KICK ME OUT LIKE HE KICKED CARL O ...NO CHANCE MAFIA BOSS .

DM1, Greg Little in the 3rd rd would be ( . )( . )

Good comments from all, even the newly coined mascot, I'm enjoying it gentlemen! Very intelligent conversation tonight! WTG!!!

Hey guys, with all of the different screen names ALoco uses. We can begin calling them "THE GANG OF ALOCOS"! lol.............

dyingbreed is one big ugly bully .

ALoco,

You and I both know that carl o was just another imaginary member of the official GANG OF ALOCOS! lol.....................

Thank you aloco for your support .

Dying Breed...

I just spent a few minutes reading about Brown and his life. I can certainly see what you are eluding to. I wonder if the Brian Daboll connection would cause a little favoritism...? Nah...! Not a chance, huh?

I honestly believe that when Palmer does escape his own personal Hell, he will end up being a decent QB. If he hits the right team, you may get a late career run like with Kurt Warner or someone like that.

I have been a Vince Young proponent from the start. I'm not blind or deaf, I have heard all the issues. But the is a reason that Tennessee ended up sacking both the coach and the player in that debacle. ut one thing I do not feel is a primary concern... I think Ross will cut whatever check he needs to cut to get Miami on the right path. I believe he has proven that already. So, if it comes down to money or picks standing between Miami and the guy they have decided they want... I feel confident they will pull the trigger... like I said... It would not be the first time and cannot be the last.

DB THE BULLY,
YOU NEED TO SEE SOME ONE MAN ,A DOCTOR OR SOME THING ,EVERY TIME YOU KICK SOME ONE OUT OF HERE,TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER YOU SAY IT'S ME .......

0x80,

Carlo start dat stuff man.

He come back round here we gone gittem gin!

Bet own dat!

Amando,

You're such a Henne Hater. You just wrote how the o-line play was so suspect leading to a poor running game ,well guess what, it also effects the qb play. Also what about all the dropped passes. The one guy that could catch the ball we sent packing to the vikings. These coaches are brilliant. Get a line and stick with it. I'm not saying Hennes the answer but he curtainly wasn't the only glaring issue.

CraigM...once again I respect your views...but they will lead us to 7-9 as usual...you dont want to take a chance on a Franchise QB...but yoiur happy to take a chance on a short stumpy NON game changing running back like Mark Ingram becuase he reminds you of Emmitt Smith...are you really saying that?..I mean how many players can you remember being compared to another that NEVER panned out...thousands???....hundreds....CraigM..your views on Henne at least are supported with some basic logic.Your saying give him another year with a better support just in case he improves...OK...fair call...but I saw him miss throws any decent QB should never miss...easy throws...there was NO EXCUSE for that, so I am very dubious, but ok...one more chance just in case "the light goes on" as TS would say ( pity its yet to go on for his clock management)...
But your logic on Ingram is BIZARRE....your using such a flimsy argument that he reminds you of Emmitt Smith...He is short, slow and a pound and grounder...he is already banged up, already...he will get murdered by the bigger bodies. He is not a super quick super mobile dancing machine who can change directions on a dollar coin....expect him to be a backup in 3 years time if that.

But what I find really amazing is that the same logic you use to critique those who would take a chance on Mallet, Newton etc as being too risky...well you are using even poorer logic with Ingram....how the hell do you know he will pan out...I say he has just as many question marks on him as say Newtyon or Mallet or Locker....just as many...so where is your logic?

Therefore if your going to take a punt...take a punt on someone that if it works out you hit PAYDIRT....thats a franchise QB....so what if you waste pick 15...so what...how many have we wasted in the past with NO CHANCE of a big payout?...at least 4 I would say...Fletcher, Green,Ginn,Avery.....all wastes and NONE would have transformed the franchise at all really..NONE..Hell we had a Franchise Running Back in RW and what has bben the reult?...Nada,zip, nil...

Ingram has just as many if not MORE question marks on him than any of the quarterbacks in line for 1st or 2nd round....yet you go for him with low reward rather than take a risk for a franchise changing QB whoever that could be something really special...poor thinking CraigM...even a bullseye on the RB will make only a small difference...

To me, get your Franchise QB by hook or by crook...do your analysis and if you see your Franchise QB....go for it....maybe one day youl hit on it...you will NEVER hit on it if you dont speculate high....you cannot win the lottery without buying a TICKET into it.

derek4dolphin,

There's no connection between Brown and Daboll. Though Brown did coach the Cleveland Browns way back in ancient history.

I would be thrilled to give up to a 2nd rd pick for VY. Like we've both stated, hea's young, still has upside, and is already a proven nfl winning qb. Not to mention a former top 5 overall pick.

To get all of that for a mere 2nd rd'er borders along over kill! Plus his so called issues havent been anything of grave stay away nature. They are more ajacent to immaturity than anything else. But there's no question the guy's obviously quite talented and well worth the investment! LOL.............

derek4dolphin,

Another great thing about VY is he give DC's another major headache to worry about in the red zone. Even more from the 5yd line on in because he's also a great run and scoring threat from that part of the field.

That can be hell on a defense! LOL...........

And if necessary keep wasting HIGH draft picks till you hit a Franchise QB...If this FO would use every 1st pick it gets each year for the next 4 years even they they fail, I would be supportive because I would know they are on the right track...Id encourage them to continue, because at some point we would get a BULLSEYE and find our SB winning QB....now had we adopted thia approach 20 years ago we would have at least scored a Franchise QB once every say 6 years....thats 3 Franchise QB's in the last 20 years of woeful results...hell what did we do with those picks anyway?...NOTHING...I repeat NOTHING...

Stay the course...pick QB high every year until you get your man...the rest can be resolved with later picks and wise FA signings...

If we keep doing what we have been for 20 years...conservative...lets wait for a late 3rd rounder...expect 20 more years in the wilderness...suck it up folks...!!!

VY IS OLD AND WASHED ...HENNE IS THE MAN .

I would do the VY thing AND draft Mallet or someone else HIGH....not low....HIGH....and repeat the dose NEXT YEAR and every year after that....

Dying Breed...

Yeah, sorry, I got Cleveland and Cincy crossed, Its been a long day.

Ya know, Last year this coaching staff spoke of being a "Run First" team... yet they ended up throwing one hell of a lot. I doubt seriously that will change. The NFL has more or less gave away the farm to the receivers and QB's... No way its not exploited by this team or any other,

However, Having Young in the backfield along with whomever the draft, FA and Undrafted walk on may bring into the season could be a fun thing to see. I saw Young hit a few receivers down field last year and he looked great doing it. I suppose the giant pink elephant in the room is the questions concerning Young's off and on field issues. Are they something that can be managed? Miami has done well managing Incognito, V. Davis who had a bad wrap coming into the draft... and of course Brandon Marshall who with exception to what I consider normal frustration... seems well in check last year.

I wonder how many other teams think the same way...? Does Miami still take a Draft pick and use it on a project guy even while knowing they will go after a FA...?

Like I said some time ago.... None of us know a damned thing until it happens or is announced to happen soon.

Had to step away for a minuto amigos caught our gang name LOS ALOCOS !! what colors we gonna sport homes !! we should think of merging wit another possee likes da G.H.S., dat ways 0x80 no feel left out homes !

OORRAALLEEE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like that name,the mafia boss .

Big Alfy,

Matt Millen tried that approach on wr's instead of qb's. That's pretty much why he's now in the analyst chair. Steve Young made him cry! LOL.....................

Kris you a member of G.H.S. Crew no, you a founder if I remember mob boss !

fin4life, are you becoming a gang of defeat member ?

ALOCO! VY is old and washed up true, but he is still better than Henne! Do I want VY, no....I want a real QB!!!

The funny thing about Matt Millen if you remember was that upon retiring he became the 3rd. man in the booth with Madden and Sumerall. He was real good with those two as well before destroying his legacy as a player with his stint as GM in Det.

..........TRIVIA...............TRIVIA..........

MATT MILLEN IS ONE OF 2 PLAYERS IN SUPER BOWL HISTORY WITH 5 RINGS, CAN ANYBODY NAME THE OTHER ?

MILLEN`S RINGS

1) OAK. RAIDERS 81
2) L.A. RAIDERS 83
3) S.F. 49ERS 89
4) S.F. 49ERS 90
5) WASH.........91

Tyrod Taylor could be a late rd steal

Good night to all, both the clear minded and contrariain alike,,,,,

have a great evening!

fin4life,

The other player with 5 super bowl rings is Charles Haley. With the Cowboys and 49ers. LOL.....

MILLEN ROOKIE IN 80 HURT ON IR BUT OAK GOES ON TO BEAT PHILLY IN SB

STARTER 83 L.A. BEATS WASH

STARTER 89,90 S.F. BEATS DENVER AND CINCINATI

SARTER 91 WASH BEATS BUFFALO

DB,

YOUR GOOD BRO !!!

HALEY 89,90 S.F./ DALLAS 92,93,95

fin4life,

Atually Matt Millen only has 4 SB rings. 2 with the Raiders and one each with the 493ers and Redskins.

Haley is the only player in nfl history with 5 SB rings, standing all alone with that honor. LOL..............

fin4life,

Here's proof:

Haley has the distinction of being the only player in NFL history to have been on five Super Bowl-winning teams. Playing for the San Francisco 49ers from 1986–1991, he won a ring from Super Bowl XXIII and XXIV following the 1988 and 1989 seasons, respectively. After having a personal conflict with 49ers head coach George Seifert and a physical confrontation with quarterback Steve Young, Haley was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in the 1992 off-season, with whom he won three more Super Bowl rings over the next four seasons in 1992 (Super Bowl XXVII), 1993 (XXVIII), and 1995 (XXX).

This is from wikipedia bro. LOL.............

Really I could have sworn he played on the 2 champ teams of 89,90 with the 49ers, are you sure ?

Not fair I came up with that one of the top of my head, you wikipedia`d

I loved Charles Haley even though he was never a Dolphin. The guy was just flat out one of the greatest pass rushers ever.

What separated him from most great pass rushers is he seemed to just have a knack for getting to the qb in the most critical and defining moments of a game. He wasnt just a mere sack stat machine.

I loved the guy because he always seemed like money! Even a lot of great sackers dont come thru during real money times. He did. LOL.........

For the record Charles Haley went into then 49ers V.P. Office (Carmen Policey) and urinated on his desk, Policey was then owner Eddie Debartelo`s right hand man and Haley was traded 1 week before the reg. season to Dallas, that I`m sure of !

fin4life,

Google Matt Millen. It says he won 2 rings with Oakland then LA Raiders, plus one each with San Fran and the Redskins respectfully.

That's a grand total of 4 rings. Wikepedia also says Haley's the "ONLY" nfl player with 5 SB rings.

Thats too funny fin4life. That's one helluvah great way to get traded! LOL................
