Dolphins to conduct private workout with Newton

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton has a private workout scheduled with the Dolphins, a source is telling the NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora.

Newton, perhaps the most scrutinized and talked-about player in the draft, also has workouts scheduled with Carolina, Washington, Buffalo, Minnesota, Tennessee, Cincinnati and Cleveland, according to the report.

What does that all mean?

It means Newton is such a compelling and imposing quarterback talent that teams at the very top of the draft are going to give him serious consideration. And it also means there is no clear consensus on Newton as a franchise quarterback type because teams slated to select well into the first round are looking very closely because he might be around when they select.

The Dolphins?

General Manager Jeff Ireland has promised to do all his homework on quarterbacks. Thank God! The Dolphins need a game-changer at the position so they are apparently leaving no pebble unturned and dismissing no possibility in an effort to upgrade.

Picking Newton, assuming he is available when the Dolphins select at No. 15, isn't necessarily an instant upgrade. Wherever he is selected, the chances of him starting immediately are slim. The kid is a physical speciman at 6-foot-5 and 248 pounds. He runs like the wind. He has a bazooka for an arm.

And having said that, there are questions about his footwork, accuracy, technique, ability to adjust to a pro-style attack after playing in the spread offense at Auburn, and there are questions about how quickly he'll learn to recognize coverages and be able to manipulate safeties.

So there's a lot to investigate on Newton.

If you ask me, I am thrilled the Dolphins are doing the work.

And yes, despite all the questions, I'd love for Miami to take him if he's available at No. 15. I don't think he'll be there.

But I have a dream.

Thank you, Jeff Ireland! Could it be that Parcells was the problem? I HAVE A DREAM!

I wouldn't read into this too much guys. It's simply our GM and scouting staff doing their due dilligence on a heck of an athlete. i don't believe he'll be there at 15 and I'm fine with that. Not sure i've ever seen so many differing opinions on any one guy. One of the teams in the top ten that needs a QB will take a chance on this guy. To me there are as many questions surrounding this guy as there were with Tebow last year.

Amen Craig

i 2nd that Amen

i see us dropping down picking up 2 or 3 picks. I like carimi from WISC. and either dalton or the kid from NEVADA.

newton is a quarterback? i thought he was an entertainer and an icon. there's the red flag. he can apologize all he wants for the comment but that's the way he sees himself in his own eyes. everyone should stay away from this guy until at least the 3rd rd.

I like Mallett more....but I could live with Newton....he is just I know he is a a year or two at least from starting.....unless they just gave him the reins and said "let him take his lumps"....

Kick the tires and move on.

The thing is, back in the day we used to joke around about having a wishbone style QB in the NFL. The thing back then the QBs looked more like Brady and you just knew your zillion dollar QB would be hurt trying to run.

We fast forward to now, where the Wildcat type plays are so prevalant in college and there is a ton of fake handoff boot action where the QBs keep the ball.

You get a guy like Cam Newton who wins a National Championship with this type of OFF and he is big enough to be the bully of the OFF/DEF collision.

Trouble is, this is the NFL and the Ray Lewis's of the world hit even harder than in college. The NFL GMs/Coaches just know that a QB in harms way all the time will get hurt. Can you really afford to have your franchise guy rambling down field all the time?

Vick does it but he is a speed merchant so he can avoid many of the hits or get down. He still takes his fair share of abuse and gtes nicked.

Since Newton is such a beast, maybe he could last a while? The trouble is, he is a QB and will get paid like one. It's tough for me to rationalize taking Newton when so much of his game is running the ball and you will be paying him $$.

Now maybe with a new rookie wage scale, the salaries can be reigned in and you can better justify a QB/RB hybrid?

Newton is a VERY tough call. Some are saying Top 3 guy and some are saying they wouldn't take the guy in the 1st round.

If he is there at 15, I hope we have a team that wants him very badly that will give us some great picks for him.

Cheers,

bravo rob. very good.

Can't wait until some of these guys fall flat on their faces so the rest of us can say 'told you so!'. The guys who are touting theseguys will just say 'oh well'.....

I think the top rated 3 QB will be pick before our 15th pick, if so we should grab the best interior offense lineman that is on the board, the best running back is about as good as the O line. Bill

What do you mean stay away from him until the 3rd?

I'm PRAYING someone takes him BEFORE 14.

This way it will be idiot proofed for Ireland and co.

Just Say No to Newtons!!!!

Other than having Penny fall in their laps, these guys have brought in:

Henne

Thigpen

Pat White and Brandstater.

Not exactly an awe inspiring body of work. These buffoons are probably just dumb enough to draft Newton at 15.

AGAIN!

Just Say No To Newtons

When will guys evr learn that just because a guy is a 'good athlete' doesn't mean he'll be a successful and winning QB in the NFL at the hardest position. Some guys do this EVERY year...the hot, new prospect comes around and guys drool all over themselves fawning for these guys. You win and lose as a TEAM. Put Manning and Brady in Detroit or Cleveland the last few cheers and GUARANTEED they wouldn't have had anywhere close to the success they've had in their careers.

Cam Newton has CINCINATTI BENGALS written all over him and he'll be a bust within three years. Write it down and remember where you heard it. Can you say the next AKILI SMITH....watch!

no

GRAIG M/ROB...........

HOW YOU GUYS KNOW THE FUTURE RE CAM NEWTON ?

He won't be there at 15 which is why I find this all amusing. Yes, do the due diligence and all but I wouldn't be getting my hopes up on a QB at 15 it's simply not happening. There are no can't miss QB's in this years draft so I am scared to death of drafting one I would rather wait until next year take Ingram at 15 and be done with it.

This is more diversionary or a formality & not out of real interest. Expect Miami to trade back to the back 3rd of the 1st to pick up a lineman or a RB. Same would go for the 2nd round.

Newton is not ready to play right away & the Dolphins absolutely need someone who can. Doesn't even have to be a QB. This regime NEEDS to win NOW. They don't have time to develop another project player.

Especially when you consider they presently don't have a 2nd rounder, they need an impact player 1st pick. Whether they can get the 2nd back is speculative. Based on present needs, Newton doesn't help them.

Joe on this we agree...

What I'd like to pose to Joe and others, if they couldn't trae back and were forced to pick at 15, realizing that they have to win NOW, would you have a problem if they traded some or one of next years picks to help themselves this year? I'm not a fan of short term thinking but would trade next year's one for another one this year for example or maybe next year's two to move up and get a two this year. Thoughts?....

i'd rather draft a real qb like McEroy of bama in the 4th round. he's smart, accurate and plays under center! a newton workout is a smokescreen i HOPE. i have zero confidence in ireland.

My buddy Aloco,

You are awake! LOL

I never professed to know the future of Cam Newton. The last line of my last post says if he's there at 15, I hope some team loves him and will give us great picks for the 15 spot.

Up or down, I just know he will need a lot of work and unless you incorporate the dangerous sunning style plays he's used to, I don't see him helping any team right away.

Ireland and Sparano, the Bifecta, need help sooner rather than later.

There are quick twitch, sudden type athletes that we need and can get later in the draft like... RB Taiwan Jones, WR Jerrel Jernigan, RB Noel Devine, QB Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick is a great blend of what Cam brings to the table with size and running ability but he is much more of a throwing QB already, he could really help us develop a nice QB stable.

With his Pro style, big league arm and cocky gunslinger attitude, maybe Ryan Mallet is the most immediate help. He is the closest to already being able to challenge Henne out of all the draftable QBs including Gabbert imho.

So, I don't know about Newton.

Unless you consider FIG Newtons. Those are pretty good.

Cheers,

I still the guy in this draft might end up being Kaepernick. It's interesting where guys have him ranked. Some guys have him creeping into the first round, other guys not until the third. Quite interesting. I like the kids talent and smarts. He reminds me most of Freeman in Tampa from what I've seen of him. Probably a couple years away.

Joe Schmoe,

If there was a door prize you would've just won it.

Well said!

After going 7-9 two years in a row and witnessing Ross's growing impatience(Harbaugh)these guys are in win now mode whether they admit it or not.

All the long term logic and strategies are out the window this off season.

This very well could be a ploy to try and get somebodies #2 if Newton were to fall to #15.

@ Rob,

I just read your comments along with some of the other and I have to agree, I can`t see them making this move unless there thinking if Newton happened to fall to 15, it would give them the best leverage in a trade scenario.

The challenge with this borderline lame duck regime is, if they don't win, they are out.

Now EVERY team operates under this premise but, Boss Ross went coach hunting in the wide open spaces. There is nothing more under the gun than seeing your own boss shopping for your replacement out loud.

So how is it that the Bifecta stays in a long term, do whats right for the team long term mode? In my humble opinion they can't.

What I hope is that they don't slip into panic mode and mortgage the future taking chnces on players to save their own skins.

Their actions will end up speaking loudly about how they feel about their futures in Miami.

This is better than most soap operas.

Get your popcorn ready!

Cheers,

@ odin,

Whats up !! you know your right all long term thinking is out the window with these two, I don`t even think they can afford to have anything like a 1-4 start before full mob mentality hits !!

@ Rob,

It`s precisely the idea that they could end up mortgaging the future to save themslves that should scare us all to death, I wonder of Ross has given that it`s due dilligiance, will there be someone in the war room who all future transactions has to go thru ? food for thought !

Armando Newton really

(nodding my head)

Newton is even more immature than his clone Vince Young and immaturity and south beach don't mix.

Never thought I'd see Armando as a nervous desperate fan

(nodding my head some more)

Armando you know we got bigger needs than QB not that I'm saying we don't need to add a QB and at this point it looks like Locker and Mallet will be available later so why go desperate on another spread running QB wasn't pat white enough of a bad pick. You know they got to trade out of that spot and get that second pick.

C'mon man!

fin4life love the thought at 4:09

the only thing Newton is good for is a smokescreen

fin4life @ 4:13.

Totally agree!

I can't imagine a guy afraid for his job that is tied to winning games next year grabbing projects. Even if they would be more helpful down the line for the team.

No coach wants to stock the cupboard for the next guy and make himself look worse if that coach wins later.

It's sux because I am afraid it will preclude them from taking a killer groomer type QB like Kaepernick as they will say we don't have the time to develop him.

Cheers,

I believe I read the offense where Newton played was designed to look at one receiver and if he was not open Newton could take off and run. It is unproven that Newton can read more than one receiver at a time. We already have an idiot that throws to the check down 9 times out of ten!

rob,

FAIR,YOU TRIED TO HAVE IT BOTH WAY,AS FOR FIGS NEWTON,THEY R GREAT EVEN WHEN I GO TO THE STORE ,IT'S HARD TO FIND THEM B/C NOW A DAYS ,THE SUPER MARKET HAVE CRAPY COPY OF THEM WITH THEIR OWN NAME ON THE PACKAGE TO MAKE MORE MONEY .

ROB,

I CAN TELL YOU HAD A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP .

fin4life @ 4:21

That's a GREAT thought. Ross hires a seperate advisor to monitor if the team starts thinking short term too much.

Although I couldn't even imagine how he could limit the damage?

Maybe have someone review their strategies the week prior to the draft to make sure it's not steering towards crazy short term thinking?

Football is not Ross's area of expertise but as a fan I am sure he has some working knowledge.

Good thought bud.

Cheers,

I NOTICE ALL THE FANS WHO ATTACKED CAM NEWTON TODAY ,ARE THE SAME FANS WHO PREDICTED THAT M.VICK WILL NEVER SURVIVE AND WILL NEVER BE BACK .

Cam Newton for prezident

@ Rob,

I have to agree it sucks but unless a Keap were to fall to say rd.5 I don`t see it happening and by theway another Mando post designed to sin our wheels, this kid right or wrong based on his athletic ability will be gone early, your post at 4:14 is the one that really has my head going right know. In that win now mode that Sparano and Ireland are in it relly beggs the question on how much leeway they have on mortgaging our future picks ? best thought of the day by far bro !!!

Newton is the best QB to put as the face of a franchise right away. He'd be an immediate impact player that can be groomed under Henne for a year if he needs work but as his pro day shows he's fine taking snaps from under center and shows exceptional footwork dropping back. IMO he's the best upgrade at QB possible

rob,
Newton has a great arm. Tight spirals on the money. He's 6'6 and mobile doesn't mean they will be calling options a lot like they did in college. He's just as capable throwing the ball as anyone else in the draft if not better.

@ Rob,

By the way bro, whats up !!! and excuse typos in last post, I`m actually playing a dagerous game of using my laptop while in bumper to bumper traffic, I hope a cop doesn`t see me !

SAY NO TO SCAM NEWTON.

BEERPHIN,

DON'T TRY TO CONVINCE ROB , HE HAS MADE UP HIS MIND ABOUT NEWTON .HE THINKS HE'S NEWTON FIGS .

betting on Henne or any FA or a mid rd QB to come in and make a difference will be the reason Ireland and this regime is fired. They need to get the best QB available period and let the best man win the starting job

Aloco,

I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night. LOL

Gotta get the original OG Fig Newtons in the annoying taxi cab yellow package. Fakes won't cut it.

To set the record straight on Cam Newton. I am not calling him a total bust as I think he has a ton of God given ability.

That said, I just think the tyoe of offense he is already adept at doesn't suit the NFL as much. I do see signs of teams warming to more of his type of OFF. Like us running so much Wildcat, other teams copying us and having a Wildcat package or two in their OFF etc.

I just think that Newton would not pay dividends until potentially after Sparano and maybe Ireland were gone.

I think they are both bright enough to see this and therefore won't tab Newton as a QB for Miami.

That's my official view, no attacking Newton for me. Vick is a totally different animal in my eyes and not in a bad way.

Cheers,

If this regime doesnt win this year Im not neccessarily sure thier out. Consider the Ross/Sparano offseason debacle.

Ask yourselves, even if Sparano/Ireland are out. What credible nfl braintrust would want to come in and work for Ross? Also far more likely than not, the regime replacing Ireland/Sparano willbe far worse.

Bottomline, if we dont win this season we're screwed both ends against against the middle. The backend of which could be without lubrication.

REAL STORY......PAT WHITE IS PUSHING TO GET HIRED BY THE HEAT ,HE SAID , (( I CAN HELP THEM GETTING OUT OF THEIR FUNK LONG TERM )) .

Its never good to draft a guy, when you even have to say a cookie filled with fig is better than this Newton...

cam and brandon on the same team? no way, for the same reason they don't want gays in the military.

ROB,

YOU STILL TRYING TO GET IT BOTH WAY LIKE DB .AS FOR VICK ,NOW YOU SAY HE'S ADIFFERENT ANIMAL ,WHY ? MAY BE B/C YOU ALREADY KNOW THE VERDICT ON HIM AFTER PARADING HIM FOR MONTHS ?

NEWTON FIGA ARE GREAT,THE REAL ONES .

Like I said, all the guys screaming for Cam and a first round quarterback will shuffle back to the corner when these QB's fall flat on their faces. Just be glad making the decision to pick 'em won't cost you your job boys, like it is in the big leagues.

If you love the idea of drafting Newton then you must not have a problem with the player he most resembles, VY, before I hand over the 15th pick for an unproven commodity like Newton who I`ll admit posses the most upside in this group. I would seriously consider parting wih a 2012 2nd rd. pick for a proven one in VY. They posses the same type of upside one has played in the league the other hasn`t the hit or miss risk is about even. I know what everybody will say once I press send about Young and his maturity affecting the locker room and to them I say take into account Newton`s father crying to the press about playing time or the FO and coaches about his sons contract and the distraction all around 3 ring circus the Newton family would be in S.Fla.

beerphin,

The two guys on NFLN that actually worked in the field and have the most credentials to back it up are Charlie Casserly and Michael Lombardi.

They both have the most sway with me in their opinions. Both of them are not high on Newton and Casserly even went so far as to say he would't take him in the first round.

That doesn't make them right but I do try to heed what they say and at least weigh it.

Try not to be too mesmerized by the shorts n tshirts stuff. Cam through terrible at the combine and got dinged for it. Then came out and had 10 passes out of 60 hit the ground in his own scripted workout with his guys.

Both Casserly and Lombardi have remarked that the Nat Champ game had a ton of negative marks in it for Newton.

Bottomline is he is one hell of an athlete that I hope someone falls in love with early so the Bifecta can either A) Not have to make that call or B) have the ability to get use some draft picks in the 2,3,4 rounds where I think the bulk of this drafts players reside.

Cheers,

I HEAR THESE EXPERTS ARE HAVING A BIZ RELEATIONS WITH THE AGENTS FOR THESE PLAYERS AND WHEN THEY VOICE AN OPINION IT'S ALWAYS TAINTED .

ALoco,

How dare you of all people on this board try and accuse anyone here of trying to have it "both ways".

Dude with yourn many false aliases you've covered every concieveble angle there is to cover in regards to having it more than one way.

All of your aliases seem to have a different opinion from the previous alias. Most of us here know these crazily named screenames that pop up, disappear, only to be replaced by even stramger named screen names, are all you.

ALoco you're only fooling yourself by thinking no one knows its you. Dude you should seek help, seriously. You are now completely sold on your own bs! LOL.............

By the way Rob and Craig M the idea of trading for Young was one that we bounced around last night with 0x80, your thoughts.

I believe as long as Cam Newton is taken by the right club he will be very effective in the NFL. A club that will Mold its system around Cam, instead of making Cam fit into the system will have far more success.

Should Cam Newton land in a very complicated offense and without having a veteran like Chad Pennington or a QB coach that will teach him how to study on a Professional Level. Teach him by example to become a football junkie and not allow the J. Russel syndrome to kill his career... he will do great. If Cam hits a club that does not have that... and is set free to his own devices to learn these lessons..... He will have a 4 year stint on that club, be declared a bust and let go. Then perhaps another team can get it right. There is to much talent to just turn you back on with him.

DB,

BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE,I ONLY SIGN ALoco ,as for both ways.you r the master doing it and some are copying you ;

WHEN YOU WRITE A POST DON'T START WITH ONE VIEW THE END UP WITH BUT OR I WISH OR IT MAY THEN YOU WRITE THE OTHER VIEW .

I CALL THAT SELLOUT .

THEN END UP

Aloco,

Slow down and type very deliberate man.

What the hell does "parading him for months" even mean??

You may be typing/vocabulary challenged but I think it's all an act bro.

Meet me half way... use your real words for a second.

I have ALWAYS liked the ideas of mobile QBs. My favorite QB coming out in this draft from jump street is Kaepernick for that very reason.

It has only been recently that I have come to a the reality check that the Bifecta may not believe they have the time to train/groom any QB so they will take the most Pro ready guy in Mallet.

Assuming they believe he won't blow up in their face with a milk smile cocaine mustache.

I am trying to be as real as I can with bud, help me out here. Re-clarify your post at 4:46.

Cheers,

"I am trying to be as real as I can with bud..."

If that isn't working you can always try cocaine ;)
