Dolphins to conduct private workout with Newton

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton has a private workout scheduled with the Dolphins, a source is telling the NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora.

Newton, perhaps the most scrutinized and talked-about player in the draft, also has workouts scheduled with Carolina, Washington, Buffalo, Minnesota, Tennessee, Cincinnati and Cleveland, according to the report.

What does that all mean?

It means Newton is such a compelling and imposing quarterback talent that teams at the very top of the draft are going to give him serious consideration. And it also means there is no clear consensus on Newton as a franchise quarterback type because teams slated to select well into the first round are looking very closely because he might be around when they select.

The Dolphins?

General Manager Jeff Ireland has promised to do all his homework on quarterbacks. Thank God! The Dolphins need a game-changer at the position so they are apparently leaving no pebble unturned and dismissing no possibility in an effort to upgrade.

Picking Newton, assuming he is available when the Dolphins select at No. 15, isn't necessarily an instant upgrade. Wherever he is selected, the chances of him starting immediately are slim. The kid is a physical speciman at 6-foot-5 and 248 pounds. He runs like the wind. He has a bazooka for an arm.

And having said that, there are questions about his footwork, accuracy, technique, ability to adjust to a pro-style attack after playing in the spread offense at Auburn, and there are questions about how quickly he'll learn to recognize coverages and be able to manipulate safeties.

So there's a lot to investigate on Newton.

If you ask me, I am thrilled the Dolphins are doing the work.

And yes, despite all the questions, I'd love for Miami to take him if he's available at No. 15. I don't think he'll be there.

But I have a dream.

fin4life,

It really doesnt seem a new cba will be reached before the draft. Seems more likely any trade scenarious take place afterwards.

That being said, I would rather give up a 2012 2nd rd'er to Titans than select any of these 1st rd qb's in 2011. VY could come in and displace Henne rightaway, he's still young, and his best playing days and upside is still ahead of him.

I still believe if he totally rededicates himself he can be an elite top 5 nfl qb. A 2012 2nd rd pick is a small price to pay for that.

Why is it that every year the media CONTINUE to completely miss the boat on the NFL Draft?

It is a high stakes poker game bozos. Whether they really intend to get him or not they will DEFINITELY PRETEND that they are interested.

Every year the same bozos in the local media make the same inane asumptions

MY ENGLISH IS WEEK AND MOST BLOGGERS CAN READ MY POSTS AND FIGURE OUT WHAT I MEAN BUT I MEANT TO SAY , YOU GUYS WERE SHAMING M.VICK FOR MONTHS BEFORE HIS COME BACK INCLUDING YOUR LEADER DB .

Cam Newton will go in the top 5. Even if he drops a few spots, the Dolphins don't have a second round pick to move up in the first round. I just don't see it happening. I wish we would trade up, but I don't think it happens.

@ Derek4,

I didn`t watch Newton play during the reg season last year, I did however catch the hype machine for the N.C. game and I gotta tell you I expected him to light up the Org. secondary and not only did he not light them up but looked very ordinary underthrowing alot of his deep passes or overthrowing underneath he really is lucky cause I remember of the top of my head at least 2 to 3 more picks he should have had that were flat out dropped.

THE MEDIA HAVE NO CLUE,THEY JUST FILLING THE SPACE ,THE EXPERTS DON'T KNOW AND WE ALL SHOULD LISTEN BETTER TO BEOPLE LIKE .......

fin4life,

I have been sounding off about VY as my FA choice for a quite while now. Once Orton was sort of out of the mix I don't think there is a FA or potential FA that has even close to his upside. Orton due to his immediate ability to play and his familiarity with BM.

The Titans have come out and said they will be getting rid of him for sure. I don't see how that helps his trade value.

Due to this fact I believe this regime may pull the trigger on a VY trade but hope they can only give up a 3rd or 4rth in 2012 to make it happen.

If the Fins play hardball and the rest of the league is thinking the same way, maybe they all just wait for him to get cut and try to scrap with other teams over him with $$ and opportunity rather than draft picks??

I think VY would be just the instant competition that Henne and the Miami Dolphins need at QB.

As for VY's attitude, if he didn't have it, he wouldn't be for sale imho.

Cheers,

There's a better chance of Tony Romo lining up behind center for the Dolphins next year than there is it'll be Cam Newton.

ALoco,

Sometimes you seem smarter than you show. But most times you seem to politic yourself for idiot of the year. Dude this is a discussion forum. Not the appease ALoco forum.

I havent straddle the fence on anything I've posted. Its just seems such a shame your slow to both fully comprehend or keep up.

You are the type of guy that one can say to, "Red lights are very safe". Then you'll comprehend it as being a full fledged member of the "communist party".

Have a good day ALoco! Im sure you'll get the wrong interpretation of that statement too. LOL.......

@ DB,

This is another mando post designed at spinning everybodies wheels, there is no way with the attention this kid has gotten that he drops past Arz. at 5 or Tenn at 7 (that would be ironic by the way) and if the slide continues you see the Shannahan`s at 10 or Vikes at 12 letting him go or for that matter not using the very idea were throwing around about leveraging him in a trade.

One thing I know is there will eventually be labor peace and when that happens I would rather deal for Young, than start from scratch with Newton who by the way will not have had any exposure to the Off. or any NFL Off. for that matter.

No. Doing this would be a crime. There are better quarterbacks that we can get later.

ALoco,

Another lie, your english isnt weak. That's a facade you use with the ALoco character. When using your other screen characters your english all of a sudden gets surprisingly strong.

Dude you didnt just come over on the banana boat. But I do believe you're an insult to those that did everywhere. I'll bet you ten gradn right now that your birth certificate says usa on it.

Please take me up on the offer. I guarrantee I'll pay you ten grand if Im wrong.

I AGREE WITH YOUR POINTS ON YOUR LAST POST ,I MAY MISUNDERSTOOD SOME OF YOUR POSTS ,I DIDN'T MEAN THAT PEOPLE SHOULD PLEASE ME AT ANY WAY .

ALoco,

What about it? I have ten grand saying you're a naturalized U.S. citizen. Therefore being fully educated in the USA and there's absolutely nothing wrong with your english or usuage of the english language.

YOU GOT MY ANSWER...20,000 IN ESCREW ACCOUNT WITH GUARANTEE .

ALoco,

Escrew account? Is that at the Playboy Mansion or Dude Ranch?

@ Rob,

Please read my post at 5:13, cause were discussing something in my humble opinion that has no shot of happening there are to many teams in front of us that at worst are going to try and leverage him themselves, that said I read your post and it makes sense, although with Fisher gone I imagine they will take there time and look to get compensated. If that compensation were to go as high as a 2 I would do it blind folded but right now like you I`m playing the what if of silly scenarios down another one of mandos dillusional rabbit holes.

I DON'T TAKE YOUR WORD FOR IT,IF YOU WANT GIVE ME YOUR MONEY ,IT HAS TO BE ALL WORKED THROUGH LAWYERS .LOL

Beerphin,

You and I disagree on Newton and that's fine. We've never had "trouble(lol)" disagreeing.

The thing I will agree with you on, is what the FO SHOULD be doing and thinking. I think you're absolutely 100% on the money. At least right up to picking Newton anyway.

I just don't think their looking at things the same way they were last year or the year before.

For all the already mentioned reasons, I think there going to zero in on the quick fix. I'm not saying I advocate it, I'm just saying what do you REALLY expect from these guys at this point.

They brought in Nolan last year, signed the big free agent, drafted all defense and Wah-Lah!!!!

Now they're feeling the heat. They already brought in the new OC and next ????..........

Will they stay the course keeping an eye on the future by drafting a guy like Newton?

OR

Will they go for the Wah-Lah?!?!

Aloco,

You are right. I was not believing that Vick would be ANYWHERE near where he is now coming out of jail. He was not an insane QB in Atlanta as he wasn't focused on being that 100%. He said that to Jim Mora's face in an interview after he got out.

Me and almost 31 other teams missed that call.

If you remember the Eagles were not exactly competing with tons of teams for Vicks services. They were one of the very few teams that were "WILLING" to take a chance on a guy that had been sitting in the pokey a while. The team "WILLING" to take a chance that PETA and all animal rights groups wouldn't cause a three ring circus.

The thing myself and all these other teams didn't really know, including the Eagles, was just how important the game was to Vick. He used the time in prison to actually study the game as a real QB should. He was adept at staying fit and disciplined enough to learn and grow with his downtime.

In hindsight, the Eagles got waaaaaay more out of Vick than anyone would have imagined.

He paid his debt to society and the light turned on for him. I'm glad for him and hope he stays clean of off the field woes. He is fun to watch.

Talk about a guy people pay $$$ to see play.

Ross would have had serious Orange carpet to roll out.

If that is having it both ways, then guilty as charged.

Cheers,

ALoco,

The only thing Escrew is you escrewing yourself. If you werent a naturalized U.S. hispanic, chances are very slim you would have a favorite American football team.

The first love "football" team of predominantly every unnaturalized American hispanic is called Soccer.

Your interest in American football would be very minute at best. We know that isnt true because you're here evry single day season in and season out.

That's extremely farfetched for an unnaturalized American hispanic.

I always though it was understood that the character Aloco and all others spawned from him were nothing more than a running gag on here if not then aloco. (habla conmigo porque si eres latino en miami to me entiendes perfectamente bien mi socio) If language is another than Spanish let me know I work at a perverbial U.N., the shipping business and in my field you speak with companies all over the world, I`ve even been brushing up on some Russian lately.

NOT EVERY DAY DB,FRI,SAT AND SUNDAY I WON'T BE HERE DUE TO WORK AND NEXT WENSDAY AND TUESDAY ALSO.

I AM NOT HISPANIC , ARE YOU FROM MEXICO ?

DB, ARE YOU STILL ON FOR 20,000 ? IN ESCREW ACCOUNT .

Rob_OC,

IMO, the verdicts still out on Vick. The last 4-5 games of last leason nfl DC's had become really dialed into Vick. They really reduced him to looking just average.

Look for nfl DC's to pick up right where they left off with Vick in 2011, in the 2012 season. I look for Philly to have a very slow start in 2012 and Philly fans will be screaming why the hell did thier fo trade off Kolb.

maybe the kid from missouri falls to 15, that would be a steal.....

DB,

YOU TRYING TO HAVE IT BOTH WAY AGAIN ,YOU SAID 10,000 ,THEN WHEN I TOOK YOU ON THE OFFER ,NOW YOU SAYING ,YOU MAY HPSPANIC ? WHICH IS IT ?

ALoco,

Wow, in the past Ive seen perfectly written spanish post by someone calling themself ALoco. I guess you'll deny that too huh? LOL...........

THE VERDICT STILL OUT ON VICK MY FOOT,HE'S MAKING 17 MILLION THIS YEAR AND DB STILL HOPING HE WILL FAIL .OF COURSE AT SOME POINT IT WILL HAPPEN,

BOTH WAY AGAIN .

fin4life @ 5:13 and 5:23,

Some good points bud.

I would stop short of thinking anything homework wise regarding Cam Newton or anyone else is a futile excercise.

When QB Alex Smith came out it was him and QB Aaron Rodgers duking it out as to who would go #1. Then Rodgers falls like a rock to 24 and GB snags him. Hmmm, how do that turn out for the league that watched it all happen?

Also there are ALWAYS curve balls. DT Tyson Alualu to the Jags at pick 10 and most had him as a 2nd rounder. WR Darius Heyward Bey going to the Raiders at 7th overall? WTH?

There will typically be slides, kooky picks etc so you have to be able to have your strategy tight come draft day with all the contingencies.

I don't mind Armando's topic and all and think it has major relevance.

It would not shock me at all to see Newton slide some.

Cheers,

I WILL TALK TO YOU DB BREED WHEN YOU PUT MONEY UP AND ADD I MUST BE HISPANIC FOR ME TO LOSE .

@ DB,

You would be suprised if not down right floored by how many Mexicans are huge NFL fans, I was down there during the reg season about 5 years ago and was worried I wouldn`t see a game and asked in the hotel reception, they told me to turn on FOX TELEMUNDO, I said o.k. and to my suprise they had a line up like ours (2 games) with pre-game, mind you it was nerve racking because the whole thing is in Spanish but you would be suprised.

OK, DB ,I TAKE YOU ON YOUR OFFER,

YOU SAY I AM HISPANIC AND N.CITIZEN . OK ...NOW HOW TO GET TO WIN YOUR MONEY ?

The Cowboys have a very large following in Mexico. It's true that soccer is vastly more popular there (and that won't be changing) but the NFL is pretty well known and many games are televised.

Elsewhere in Latin America, not so much.

Rob-OC,

I believe the team most likely to select Cam Newton that's in the top 10 are the Cincinatti Bengals. They're an absolute magnet and poster child for dysfunctional franchises.

Im looking at it squarely as which team most likely to accept his baggage plus be enamored with his athleticism.

I know that I maybe a minority with the opinion that Im about to state. But I believe its highly possible Newton will be there at #15. That scares me because I believe Newton is just a bigger version of Pat White.

Rob,

I've thought over the same scenario with VY.

The Titans try and hold out for a good pick. Other teams interested try and hold out until they're "forced" to cut him.

Meanwhile, VY is losing out on off-season work-thus diminishing his opportunity to help any other teams right away.

It's a sucky situation to be in, but, that's politics in the NFL.

ALSO IN CANADIA THEY SHOW THE NFL GAMES AND THERE IS CANADIA FOOTBALL LEAGUE. THERE IS ONE TEAM THAT IS CALL THE CAT TIGERS.

DB,

I wouldn't auto bet against this version of Mike Vick. He still has the deadly quickness that can turn a game on a dime.

He seems to have a better, not superior, but much better grasp of reading defenses and knows more when to hold em, when to fold em, and when to run.

I see Phili as having a lot of dynamic weapons with McCoy, Vick, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. I feel there DEF will imporve some too. I would not think slow start with this bunch.

They are in a rough division so that does help your arguement.

Time will tell.

Cheers,

DO YOU REMEMBER THEY HAD THE OTHER FOOTBALL LEAGUE WITH THE SCOTLAND TEAM THEY HAD THE SORDS ON THE HELMETS AND THERE WAS A DRAGON TEAM TOO.

Personally, I hope we trade down and pick up Pouncy along with a 2nd rounder. We need to bolster our O-line. But then again, I'm not a football draft expert nor do I pretend to be, so my opinion, along with a dollar, will get you a coke. Just like everyone else commenting on this board.

If Newton makes it past the Bengals then it's highly likely he could slip to 15. However, as soon as he falls out of the top ten we'll hear d-fans clamoring for the trade and Ireland's probably dumb enough to do it.

This whole draft and specifically QB is not what we think or even what's best for the Dolphins. It's all about what Sparano and Ireland think will keep them in Miami after 2011.

To do that, they'll have to go after a vet in FA whenever that happens. Sure, they'll draft a QB at some point. But even they know a rook won't save their jobs. Considering what may be available, a vet won't either but it will give them a better chance.

DB,

YOU R WRONG AS ALWAYS .LOL

THERE IS THE ESKIMOS TEAM TOO IN CANADIA. THEY ARE NOT HISPANICS BUT THEY ARE INDIANS AND MANY HSPANICS ARE INDIANS SO THEY COULD BE

odin,

For sure brudda!

This CBA bullstein is not helping ANY player that needs more tutoring inc VY, Odrick, Misi, Carrol etc.

I just hope that if they do decide that VY is the guy they target, there is no "Kings Ransom" involved. VY has his warts so hopefully they weigh down his huge upside value some.

Good thoughts from a wisdom filled Viking! Ragnorok!

Now finish your double rations of grog and double rations of grool. The Cap'ns girlfriend wants to go water skiing and you are the head oarsman! LOL

Cheers,

i must to go to the pharmacy in about 20 minutes .i need to give a shot to an elder folk .

@ Rob,

If this kid drops and anything can happen then we definitly use him as leverage to get back into rd. 2 and maybe even an additional 4 depending on how far we drop but don`t compare him to the Rodgers saga buddy. If you remember Rodgers was in free fall before the draft because the entire league was suffering from a Kyle Boller hang over, you remember him he was the Cal Q.B. Billick had Newsome trade back into rd.1 for then 2 seasons later when he flopped and his eventual succesor AAron Rodgers was lighting everybody up at Cal the consensus became that they were products of Coach Tedfords pro system. I understand what you meen by due dilligiance on Newton but you can`t compare his situation to what happened with Rodgers and I say that with conviction as one of the many sold on Rodgers being a product of a good college system.

Rob , i give you 10 grand if you can tell me who stole the figs .

hopeful fin,

Trading back, grabing a 2nd rd'er, and taking Pouncey with the traded back 1st rd'er isnt a horrible idea.

Especially if followed up with a wr, rb, then qb. of course I would like to see VY added to the roster in 2011 too.

GANG OF DEFEAT MEMBER DB WILL GO TO APE CITY JAIL WITH HYENA COWHER AND NAKED ORPAH WINFRY ARESTED BY HERO LIPPY THE LION AT THERE MANSON IN THE BAHMAHAS. ALL WILL BE ON TRIAL AFTER THE BIG GAME WITRH VULTURE CITY

ALOCO,i will give you 10 grand if you can play soccer .

Mando, I take issue with you saying the Dolphins need a "game-changer" at QB. That insinuates that Miami DOESN'T currently have a game-changer at the position.

I offer you two examples from the 2010 season: Detroit and Buffalo (the 2nd game).

Evidence that Miami ALREADY has a game-changer at QB, Chad Henne. He changes the game from a possible winning situation, to a definite loss. Can't change a game anymore than that!

WIN-NING!!!

DB,

Your Bengals theory with Newton could be correct. They do take chances with spotty backgrounds.

They also will need a new franchise type icon/entertainer to run the show if Carson Palmer is nit bluffin.

Should be interesting.

I know a bunch of people keep mentioning Buffalo but I thought Fitz did a dang decent job with the hand Buffalo dealt him. If I am them I take CB Peterson or DT Darius/Fairley.

My dos centavos

Cheers,

i will give every one 10 grand if you all hispanic .

Newton = bust. Remember Jamarcus Russell? Ran like the wind? Physical specimen? Bazooka for an arm? Yea he worked out well. Guys every year it's the same thing - these are NOT the top qualities you need in a GOOD NFL QB! And they NEVER will be! You MUST be able to COMPLETE a high % of passes to your receivers - at all places & all situations on the field. That's what counts...not how big he is, how fast he runs, blah blah blah...

DC @ 6:01,

Nice side splitter! Thanks for the chuckle.

Truth is stranger than fiction sometimes... lol

Good one.

Cheers,

For $10,000 I'll be a Zimbabwean!

For $10,000 I'd marry a Palestinian trying to become an American!

For $10,000 I'd teach the GANG OF DEFEET how to burn APE CITY to the ground........Viking Style!!!!

PARTY! PARTY! PARTY! PARTY!

Dying is your man odinseye.go get you 10,000 fast.

For $10,000 I'd sleep with Dez Bryant's mom, or at least I'd give it serious consideration.
