Fins and Canes apparently making nice again

Remember back in 2005 when Nick Saban (sorry, had to say his name) took over the Dolphins and in his first draft he went with a Southeastern Conference player in the first round? And he picked an SEC player in the third round. And another in the fourth round.

Saban said he picked guys from the SEC because he had coached in the conference at Louisiana State and was familiar with the players. Saban also plucked Kevin Vickerson from Michigan State in the seventh round and it was no coincidence he had coached at Michigan State before LSU and was still closely tied to folks at that program.

The point is familiarity was something Saban believed -- right or wrong -- gave him an advantage. It obviously didn't play out that way in 2006 when Saban picked an SEC guy in the first round again, especially when we all saw Jason Allen trying to cover people. But, again, familiarity was important to the coach.

Fast forward to the Bill Parcells era. He had an amazing tie to Montana, for some reason. And the Dolphins drafted Lex Hilliard from Montana. And the Dolphins signed kicker Dan Carpenter from Montana. And the Dolphins added Cory Procter to the roster at different times last year. Procter came from the Dallas Cowboys via, you guessed it, Montana.

I say all that to say this: All NFL teams have programs they feel very comfortable with. They feel they get inside information from those programs. The coaches on the NFL team feel they have a kinship with the coaches on the college team.

Bill Belichick had that with Saban at LSU and with Urban Meyer at Florida most recently. I guess that's the reason he felt comfortable picking TE Aaron Hernandez when other teams were worried about the kid's drug tests.

The Dolphins used to have a program they were pretty comfortable with once upon a time -- the University of Miami. This column in today's Miami Herald outlines the history of the ties between Miami's professional and collegiate football teams.

But the relationship got broken around the middle of the last decade for reasons the column explains. And that wasn't good for either, in my opinion.

It didn't hurt as much as it could because the Hurricanes haven't been championship-caliber in recent years. So the Dolphins haven't exactly missed out on players that were difference-makers -- with the exception of Jimmy Graham last year. (Yes, that's only a projection, but I love that kid's potential and cannot understand why the Dolphins didn't get him). I seriously wonder why it is a kid like Sam Shields, who played at Miami and was available as an undrafted free agent, signed with the Green Bay Packers and not the Miami Dolphins?

That kind of stuff shouldn't be happening. And apparently Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland is working to keep that from happening in the future. At least it looks like he is.

That's good because other teams are apparently working things at UM these days as well. Not the least of those teams is the Patriots, who got themselves a pretty sweet connection to the U in former quarterback Bernie Kosar, who is working for New England as a consultant.

But apparently Ireland has the right idea in making nice with the Canes and making sure the valuable information on players that the college coaches might have goes to the Dolphins also.

The Canes had their Pro Day last week. Bad weather caused a suspension and postponement. They will pick back up March 25. The results of Pro Day are only partial because the event did not conclude. I have shared with you the available results below.

And if you are not impressed with any of the players available from Miami this year, that's OK. This isn't about getting a fast fix. The relationship I hope the Dolphins and Canes are forging is a long-term one that will take advantage of Miami players well into the coming years.

At the very least, the fact the lines of communication are open again is good news.

Carrot Top Recives a Nomination for "Actor of the year" for his performance as home.......

Odinseye becomes Extremely Violent and takes over Norway without a single shot, Villagers are happy to finally have a true warrior king.

The cheerleaders will start their very own reality show, jumping out of gigantic cakes and eating the icing off each other until they get fat.

Cuban Mennace, Bratton was initially drafted by the Dolphins (I believe 12th round) but did not sign. A year later he reentered the draft and was taken by Denver.

Similar situation with Craig Erickson, who was selected by the Eagles first (4th round), did not sign and then went in the 1992 draft in the 3rd round to Tampa Bay.

0x80 will be reveviled as Bill Belcheck and be accussed of "War Crimes" againsnt the NFL and sent to Gitmo in Cuba...

Cuban,

I didn't think you would ever top the Carrot Top post-ABSOLUTELT ROTFLMAO!!!!

Followed up, of course, by a blockbuster triple x rated porno titled:

Say Hello To My Little Friend.

The "film" will obviously be self-financed from his newest "Droid" endorsement deal.

@ Cuban Menace,

TonyCane at 6:09 is right we drafted Melvin Bratton in the 7th round of the 88 draft, he was a projected sure fire top 10 pick but it was the dreaded all three ligaments snap of the knee that back then was a career killer for real, remember there was no microscopic surgery in those day`s they basically butchered the knee, think AJ Duhe.

Bratton thought that he should still get 1st. rd. money which the Fins weren`t gonna give so he held out the whole year and in those day`s under they`re CBA if you did that you were eligable to go back into the following years draft, which he did when Denver thinking he was heald invested a 12th rd. pick in him, by the way the most famous of these cases was Bo Jackson who did the same thing after being selected 1 over all by Tampa in 85 sitting out then the following season being the Raiders 7th.

I Also see Tom(Bunchen)Brady Opening a series of dance studio's featuring the lumbada(The forbidden dance),I see Tony(Fist pump)Sporano coaching a pop warner team and losing all 8 games by a total score of 161 to 0 due to no 8 year olds know how to kick FGs....The Cuban sees many things.....

fin4life,

I'm not going to go there.

BUT, if it's what I think it is, I already did.

I can tell springs coming.

I got some crows picking around my dumpster.

I'll be right back. I'm going to grab a Heineken and my rifle. Time for a little target practice.

The radish is dancing with the chihuahua and the Aztec army advances on Kentucky wearing bikinis.

Oh, enchilada of life!

Damien Berry and Van Dyke as UFA this year Ireland!

Just remember that the "U" wide receivers can't catch either!!!

It was at the 'U' that Tom Olivadotti learned the lethal prevent defence that he would deploy to devastating effect in helping fellow University of Miami Alum Jim Kelly play his way into the Hall of Fame.

There isn't any free agency until the labor situation is settled.

I'm boycotting EVERYTHING NFL!

If I se a television commercial with a player, heck, if I even see a footbal period, I'm boycotting that channel.

I'm not watching ESPN, for ANY reasons. I'm not watching the NFL channel. I'll have my service disconnected before I watch ANY channel with anything even SLIGHTLY related to football WHATSOEVER. I don't care if it's pee wee flag football reruns. I ain't watching.

I'm not buying any NFL merchandise either. Not a hat, certainly not a jersey.

Zilcho-Nada-NOTHING!

COMPLETE BOYCOTT of ANY and EVERYTHING NFL!

PS: I'm sure glad these Heineken Mini Kegs don't have an NFL logo on em anywhere. I hope this sale never ends!!!!

If anybody wants to join me in my lone quest of protest, please lodge all complaints at nfl.com. Lets flood that be-atch constantly!

Armando-Big time props man!

Which is right side of NFL labor dispute? OUR SIDE!

I've been coming here virtually since you began Dolphins In Depth and I can honestly say that this is the best piece of work I've ever seen from you!

I agreed with every single syllable. I felt like you were speaking for me and that's how it should be.

That was a good start Armando so PLEASE don't stop there. You're our voice dude, so lets get this party, ah, I mean PROTEST started!!!!

-A voice in the wilderness-

Also,

The poster earlier comparing Armando being safe and sound on his couch and the NFL player having life changing injuries is a douche bag!

Armando has intimated that he makes less than 100,000 a year. The greedy player makes at least league minimum, gets all the perks, some get endorsements and they all got a free ride from High school on up through college. They get the absolute best medical coverage, far exceeding that which 98% of men, women and children here in America gets.

They take the big risks because they make the buku bucks you dumb a s s!

I'm not taking managements side by any stretch of the imagination. However, if I were one of the mediators, I would push for a Roman Gladiator "clause" in the new CBA.

You want some creative incentive laden contracts, I'll add an incentive for you. You greedy money whores fail to make a predetermined amount of plays and it's a big thumbs DOWN! Nero style!

....hating hypocritical money whores.....

ALoco!

WHY I FEEL I TALKING TO SELF????

Another thing!

No PRIVATELY OWNED business in the Western Hemisphere, whether it be a sports franchise right on down to a small Towing/Snow Plowing and Automotive Repair Shop should be compelled to open it's books to ANYONE! I don't care if it's an independent investigative committee and/or especially not said entities WORK FORCE!

Are you kidding me? It smacks of communistic gestapo tactics. The fine and upstanding German and Russian peoples themselves gave up on those archaic ideologies YEARS AGO!

The greedy a s s money grubbing owners need pony up properly no doubt, but not at the cost of their civil liberties and rights to privacy!!!!

F the Billionaires!

F the Millionaires!

Most of ALL F the NFL!!!!

-One Man's dissent-

PS: Just as a show of solidarity, I will no longer use caps when when referring to the nfl.

i just came back from work and i read the love feast between THE CUBAN AND ODINESEYE ... I AGREE THE CUBAN POST IS VERY FUNNY .

ODINSEYE,

YOU CAN OPEN YOUR OWN BOOKS B/C YOU DON'T NEED TO HIDE THE FEW THOUSANDS YOU R MAKING BUT WHEN YOU HAVE AS MUCH AS KRAFT OR ROSS,BELIVE ME YOU WILL NOT OPEN YOUR BOOKS .

@ odin,

I`m with you and so is Rob from what he posted yesterday, to tell you the truth I may even be a step ahead of you both, behind my bedroom there is a small room I converted into a T.V. area, so my wife and kids can have the family room and I can have my space to watch my games and get my fill of football news and yesterday out of shear disgust I took down every bit of memorabelia I had in there.

In regards to taking sides I gotta tell you chief I don`t know what else the owners could have put on the negotiating table in order to fix this on Friday afternoon, an increase of 60% over the next 4 seasons in vet minimum, a health care plan, better pension plans for retired players, pulling back on the 1 billion of the top by half, dropping 18 game proposal ect...

The one thing the owners don`t conceed is handing over there financial records for the last 10 years and I gotta tell you I don`t blame them. I said it yesterday and I will say it till I`m blue in the face. I can`t think of a business in America that under threat of strike would hand over there books so that there employees can hire an independant auditor to scrutinize them and come up with what they feel ownership should be paying there workforce. Contrary to what there statement read yesyerday they are not partners with ownership they are employees !!

All we have left to do is wait till the players anti-trust law suit is filed were it will become a matter of public record so we can all read in bold face point what they hope to accomplish in all of this.

I HAD SOWRDFISH TONIGHT AND ROASTED BUTTER SQUASH WITH LEMON HEARTS ,CAPERS AND YELLOW TOMATOES .......WAS VERY GOOD .

I had fried pork with mashed potato`s an fried platains in garlic sauce, topped it off with a 3 layer pudding cake of Strawberry, Custard and chocolate, it was awesome !

FIN4LIFE,

HOW YOU FRY THAT PROK,WHAT PART OF THE PIG WAS FRIED ?

We stripped a pork leg marinated the pieces in spanish sauce ( mojo criollo) and dropped on the frying pan with olive oil and kept litely marinating on low heat for about 10 minutes which is the key, if you fry longer the pork meat tends to dry up and become a bit tough to chew.

I MUST SAY I NEVER HEARD THAT FRYING LEG OF THE PORK BEFORE BUT SOUND GOOD EVEN I DON'T EAT THAT ANIMAL .

My wife made the pudding cake she devides each layer with Vanilla coockies and then coats the whole thing in condensed milk. I gotta tell you it`s off the charts

It`s sort of tradition already in my family were we cook up a storm on Sunday and all get together and eat. It usually works out nice during the season.

THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD WHEN YOU EAT OFF THE CHART DESERT AT HOME ,NO THING IS BETTER ........

P.S.... WHEN A WOMAN COOKS NO THING IS BETTER .

Agreed Aloco, what about you any kids married ?

I WILL MRRY MY GIRL FRIEND MARIA NEXT YEAR ,SHE'S 21 .I AM WAITING UNTIL I HAVE MY FIRST 100,000 DOLLARS .

Good for you, I didn`t have 100,000k but good career job.

Speaking about wife and kids I gotta go tend to mine for a little while, catch you later Aloco and peace out bro !

I snuck my newest young Hottie in under the radar(kids).

I won't be sleeping alone tonight and I ain't waiting for morning to have my breakfast in bed.

Life is GOOD tonight!!!!

DESCRIBE FOR US THAT HOOTIE FOR US ,HAIR,HOW TALL ,HOW MUSH WIEGHT ,PLEASE........

PEACE ,FIN4LIFE

I know I always tell you about the tall blondes Aloco, but this one is different.

She's only 5'-2" @ 108(she says-lol). Whatever it is, she's carrying it well.

Long brown (slightly) curly hair. Bluish green eyes. She's got that arch between her shoulder blades and behind that drives me crazy.

Petite little thing, but really beautiful(esp. for me).

I suspect she's got a little German in her, but she's about to get a lot of Viking in her-LOL!

That probably sounds a little crude, but what can I say?

Bottoms Up!!!!

Aloco, men cook better than women, women are good for bearing children....and pleasuring men. If it were not for that, we would have eliminated them long ago! LOL!

Armando, the U has more men in key positions in the NFL than any other university!

Matt Bosher is the biggest joke of a Cane player. Hated watching him play. such a tool in person also

odinseye still a sleep licking his WOUNDS AFTER LAST NIGHT BATTLE .

CUBAN,YOU MAY HAVE A POINT THAT MEN COOKS BETTER BUT WOMEN HAS THAT COMFORT THAT COMES WITH THEIR FOOD .

MORE THAN 10,000 PEOPLE DEAD IN JAPAN.BAD ,VERY BAD .SECOND EXPLOSION HITS THE SECOND NUCLAR PLAN..........

VERY BAD
VERY BAD///////////////PEOPLE WERE WASHED AWAY FROM THE SUNAMI .

ALoco,

Japan really makes you stop and think about what life's really about. We all (most of us) run like hamsters through the maze of life (commuting to and from work, working more hours each week, neglecting ourselves and our families for a little bit of cheese) without stopping and smelling the flowers. We get on here and whine about our team, this or that player, this or that coach. We over-stress ourselves on our family finances and really insignificant things (in the larger picture). Then something like Japan happens, and you see how life can be paralyzed or completely changed in an instant. And in that time, everything you used to care about becomes obsolete, and what becomes important are the TRULY important things (health, family, shelter, food, safety).

This should teach all of us that capitalism is only going to take us (as a people) so far. Money can't save your life from a natural disaster. Money can't bring your loved ones back. Money is only the root of all evil, nothing more. When we realize that as a people, maybe we'll get to improving the quality of life for ALL people around the globe, not just the ones that can afford it!

DC,

GREAT POST @ 10;46 AM.....................

1-DEOS THE NFL DOING ANY THING FOR JAPAN WHILE THE MONEY FIGHT CONTNUES ?

2- WHEN WE HAVE IN NORTH EAST LITTLE RAINTO CAUSE 1 INCH WATER YTO COME TO THE BASEMENT WE GO NUTS,CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND CALL EVERY ONE.........TRY A TSUNAMI ........

TO WORK...TO PAY DB AND CO THEIR RETIREMENT CHECKS .

DC....nice post....I have been thinking much the same thing sice Japan began getting hit....i'm sure alot of us have....

For now...who gives a crap about football....not me.....not now....

Imagine the devestation....the loss of life, the women, children, and men.....and who dominates the news here.....CHARLIE SHEEN.....

Its all a distraction.....

Sports....to include football.....so-called movie stars....work, cars, Iphones, and Facebook....

They all serve to keep all of us over stimulated, over entertained, and live a fantasy life thinking the grass is always greener on the other side......

Its all a distraction.....

LITTLE RAIN TO CAUSE..............TALK LATER TONIGHT .

ALoco, great question (if the NFL is giving aid to Japan while they're fighting over a billion dollars of entertainment dollars).

kris, ditto everything you said bro. Distraction is the right word too. I'm kind of embarrassed now how I get all into football season, fantasy, spend hours debating with folks on here, checking stats and researching players, etc. And this is the thanks I get for all my time, energy, money and involvement (lockout). All the while people somewhere around the world (today it's Japan) are just looking for a place to sleep! Or a piece of food to eat! It's just crazy.

I hope the Japanese don't have the same insurance companies we have here, who screwed people after Katrina, saying it wasn't the hurricane that destroyed their home (but the flood afterwards) and wouldn't compensate people and left them homeless and searching for what to do next. Damn insurance companies look for ways NOT to compensate you (when you pay them like clockwork every month to do exactly that). But, the American government is in the business of protecting the corporations (fascism anyone) and not the people, and I think Japan is a more decent (and intelligent) society than that.

Lets hope your right DC....lets hope your right

Well said, DC. You watch how Japan handles this in comparison to how the US handled Katrina. It will be night and day.

And you're dead on about the government protection of corporations. This country is slowly turning into a plutocracy. We elect people who do the bidding of the Koch brothers, insurance companies, pharm companies, and Goldman Sachs. They are the ones really in control. They are systematically chipping away the middle class. The Forbes 400 list has as much wealth as the bottom 50% of the entire country.

Yet so many dont pay attention. Distracted by Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, the newest gadget. And when it comes time to vote, they either dont vote, or make an uneducated selection that goes against their own best interests because they bought into some stupid form of propaganda. Scary words like "gay marriage" or "socialism". If you're basing your vote on religion, guns, gays or anything of the like, you've been duped.
