Dolphins need to work during dispute

Soon and very soon, you'll start to read stories of NFL teams gathering informally and working together or, at the very least, conditioning together while the lockout/decertification saga plays out.

My hope is Dolphins players, which were scheduled to begin their conditioning program later this month, will be organized enough to come together as a team and work out. It helps team unity. It helps morale. It helps their conditioning!

The importance of this stuff cannot be stressed enough, I believe. No, we're not at the point where the club would be running practices. But one has to take the first step (conditioning) before one can begin to run toward the second step (football practice).

Former Dolphins wide receiver and current advisor to the CEO Nat Moore knows this and believes that team unity, even in the face of a labor dispute, is important. Appearing on Armando and the Amigo (you can listen to the podcast here).  Moore addressed the topic:

"I tell all our listeners that just like in 1982, 1987 and 1993, eventually there will be some kind of resolve and the game will be played," Moore said. "This is just too great a game for the players and the ownership to not come together and come up with an equitable agreement. What that is? I cannot tell you.

"The thing I would caution players, coaches and everyone else is there's so much stuff out there in the media, of people that don't know. I could talk off the cuff but I don't know because I'm not sitting in those meetings. The thing they have to do is for the players to continue to do the things they would normally do. Don't get so caught up in this because eventually you're going to play football.

And in 1982, the two teams that stuck together, practiced every day, got together and go the actual content of what was happening in the meetings, those were the teams that played for the Super Bowl. So I think it's about the team staying together, continue to build a bond, and the players continue to stay in shape and doing the things they need to do to be ready when this things gets resolved because it will."

Moore was talking, of course, about the Dolphins and Redskins.

"Both teams, we were out 56 days, but we got together every day at Miami-Dade Junior College North and we got a report from (player rep) Jimmy Cefalo about what was going on in New York. And that kept everyone's minds at ease. In the meantime, we worked on practicing and staying in shape and working on the stuff we knew we'd be doing when we got back. And in the process, we were way ahead of everybody we played against. The Washington Redskins, with Joe Theismann and his group, they did the same thing. They practiced three times a week while we practiced every day. So think it's important that things you don't control, you have to be a professional and know what the job description is. Know that when you come back you're going to be competing against others to maintain your position on the team. You need to be ready."

There can be no denying the work can help. But here's the question: Who leads the workouts?

We know that Chad Henne said he'd call the workouts for the offensive players. But does the embattled QB have enough clout to tell other players on offense what to do and when? Would WR Brandon Marshall, who had his disagreements with Henne last season, snap to attention when the quarterback calls a workout?

And what about the defense? I know the defense has players that could covene a workout. Yeremiah Bell comes to mind. So does Karlos Dansby. I hope they would be willing and eager to get the guys working.

But it remains the offense that I worry about.

One thing that would help Henne get that group organized is that he still has Jake Long's ear. And Long has the respect of most, if not all, of his players. Maybe Long would be the guy bringing everyone together.

It is a test of leadership. It is a test of work ethic.

Odin, i think it was 40 or 42 but it was a 'sample'and only 15 questions. If I was really smart, I would spell reasoning right....LOL

Darryl,

I pretty much agree with the consensus opinion on Henne right now.

Still, I can't see him being released. I think the FO is looking at it like a worse case scenario, he will be a solid backup and down the road with more experience/development who knows.

A 2nd rounder is pricey for a backup, but that's water under the bridge. The important thing is his current salary. It's less than most backups and that's a good thing for the team.

If he has a breakout year and finds the "it" were good. If not, I can't see him getting too many offers when his contract expires. That means we can keep him cheap as a good, solid young backup, that might still have some future potential.

At least that's the way I'd be looking at it.

i never heared of so much pressure ON ONE GUY HIS NAME IS HENN IN HIS SECOND YEAR AS A STARTER,I PREDICT HENNE WILL SHUT ALL OF YOU NEXT YEAR AS DID ROGERS AND BREES .

PUT SOME PRESSURE ON ;

FASANO
MARSHALL
BESS
SOLIAI

ODINSEYE,

ARE YOU GOING WITH WIND,EVERY BLOGGER IS ONE OPINION LIKE OLD WOMEN WEARING THE SAME CHINESE DRESS IN SOMALIA .

Cocoa,

Just messing with you.

Besides, everybody can't be a genius like me. My wonderlic score was 256!!!!

WHAT!?!?

Yes it was.............

It was Too..............

IF DD ,COCOJOE,ODINSEYE ALL HAVE THE SAME LINE OF THOUGHT ,WHY ARE WE HERE?????????

ALERT,

WE NEED KRIS ,ROB IN OC TO ISTALL SOME LIFE IN THE DEBATE .......

TO INSTALL

I'm all for the saftey of the players. But, when the owners desire an 18 game schedule. These new rules, or propositions become a joke when they are filed under player saftey. The kickoff return is an exciting part of the game. It would be a shame to see this taken away.

What would be the percentages of touchbacks to returns? It also takes away a weapon for a lot of teams if the return guy is going to be relegated to taking a knee 9 out of ten times.
I understand this is just a proposal. But this idea is lame.

Unless we make alot of folks posting on here happy and draft Mallet at 15 or sign a VY or M.Hasselback after the CBA gets straightened which would also depend on the date, cause signing it in August basically kills the effect of bringing in some one anyways, blah blah blah.

To many if`s and the longer the CBA drama plays out the more the likelyhood that Henne is undr Center when the season finally gets under way. It is what it is unless the Fed Judge rules the lock out as unconstitutional, which is very unlikely, he more than likely sends them back to the negotiating table. Were there will be alot of half as sing until August. The chances of this playing out to the brink of the reg. season is high making the 2011 campaign a wash for us anyway.

This hold out could not have come at a worse time for Miami, to many uncertainties from the FO to the Coaches on down to the Q.B. The reality of it is the only one really auditioning for a job in 2012 is Henne, which some of you have alluded to, it`s definetly sink or swim time for him. I just don`t share the optamism of some because I don`t see his teamates rallying to him, he`s just to much of an enigma at this point and it will be at least 2013 before we see any

see any change !

HENNE STILL HERE AND BREATHING FIN4LIFE ,HE WILL BREAK ALL RECORDS THIS COMING YEAR AND TAKE US TO THE PLAYOFFS .

A blogger wearing a Chineese dress in Somalia?

Why did Marc go to Somalia?

Aloco,

I don't blow in the wind. I said I pretty much agree with the CONSENSUS here. That being that Henne hasn't lived up to expectations yet. Further, due to the CBA, a missing 2nd round pick and(what I consider)a weak QB draft class, we're in between a rock and a hard place.

With that being said, Henne will most likely be the guy this year, so I'm standing behind him and hoping for the best.

Not a lot of options at this point.

Poster "Gulfooned" @ 8:03PM: Writes quote below in response to my giving Armando kudo's for his blog-post,

"Neck in a rope?? Squander career? Seriously now. Posts, OpEds, journalists
and moderaters have far more profound critique on a daily basis across the
nation. Noose nada, this was a pointed, no frills assessment on a rather light
weight subjet, nothing compared to the bite from other journalists exposing the
various corrupt political and financial institutions daily, really risking their
career. Football writers are basically mosquitos in the eyes of the owners and
players. I guess maybe if your world is fish bait this seems like something more
earth shattering."

My retort...days ago, but I was waiting your return to send you this tit-for-tat. I see you are logged on with one of your many signitures.

St.Patricks Day. Just got home from work.

Baboon, I have read way too many anti-Mando posts over the past several months. Honestly, I have come within a mere synotic reflex from either hitting the enter key, or delete, before giving in to what would otherwise be described as a, "Mando scathing". I hit the delete key. Because, who am I to rip another man's opinion if perhaps he may be right. It's all in the eye of the beholder. [But since you took it personal, and acted like a brat in the sandbox, I am free to, "sticks and bones may break my bones, but words will never harm me".]

So it made my day to see Mando write like a man, you purple assed monkey. I wasn't glammorizing, just giving him a thumbs up. An attempt to offset the dislikes of you. It's called encouragement. Even a tick picking primate in Africa gets that.

"Neck in a noose," and, "chopping up stinkin' chum," are metyhporical phrases. You yourself pulled one right out of thin air. Yep, "mosquitos in the eyes of owners and players." I guess that's your way of saying Armando is a pest.

The bulk of your butchery of a post suggests that outside the pesky Football Writer, journalism is what? Precarious and dangerous?

What? If it weren't for the paparizzi, and stammering Clark Kents, we'd all be clueless, and curruption would run rampant? Let me guess, you swat at insects and hang out with the players and owners telling war-stories? Yeah, right-

I already know what your problem is. Your post wasn't really directed towards Mando, but rather towards me. I must have posted something in the past that struck a nerve, and your response was an attempted lynching. Again, metyphorical.

For the record, I know who you are. Your a regular poster, and your real signiture is your writing style; the same MO; your sentence, puncuation, grammer, etc. structure. Nothing earth shattering there. Unless your a dim witted ox, plowing a field.

He-he...

BUT ODINSEYE,

AFTER YOU PUT 16 KNIFES IN HENNE'S BACK YOU R SAYING (( I AM STANDING BEHIND HIM AND HOPING FOR THE BEST )) .

You want life in the debate ALoco? How about this: Not even if we had the 1st pic, no rook QB will make a difference to our W/L this year. The choices at vet QBs are not good.

Keep Thigpen and give him a chance to compete.

Discuss.

ALoco,

Are you saying my posts are "lifeless"?

Oh no you didn't! Don't make me go all Ape City CRAZY on yo A S S!!!!

COCOJOE,

THIGGY IS TOAST , IRELAND WILL SIGN A BIG NAME QB AND DRAFT ANOTHER,THE LOSSER ARGUMENT OF KEEPING THIGGY AND GIVE HIM A CHANE IS PASSED .

PICTURE THE DOLPHINS WITH;;;;;;

1-BIG NAME QB TO BE SIGNED

GULFDOLPHIN JUST PLAYED 007 ON US FROM READING HIS LAST 2 LINES .

odin, I agree 100% except for thinking Henne won`t be the same feast or famine guy we`ve been force fed for nearly 2 seasons, I hope I`m wrong no I pray I am but not holding my breath.

007? Oh dear, gotta go get a beer now and prepare for the Patrick Day party.

Hosting is very entertaining...

GULFDOLPHIN,

I WAS JUST MAKING A JOKE TO LAUGH W/YOU B/C YOU KEPT TALKING ABOIUT THIS CRAPPY POSTER WHO TOOK CHEAP SHOTS ON YOU WITHOUT ANY MERIT .

Aloco, SEE! That's where you're wrong! Knives are way too up close and personal. You risk any number of blood born diseases as well.

I'm more of a sniper on the grassy knoll sort of guy.

Seriously, I've been THE BIGGEST HENNE HOMER on this blog since we drafted him. At least up until the final stretch of last season.

I thought I had been being very objective and prudent in my posts about Henne.

What 16 knives are you talking about? Be specific?

COCJOE.

LET'S START WITH THIS.......

1-IRELAND AND SPARANO AREN'T SAVE THIS COMING YEAR UNLESS PLAYOFFS.
2-THIGGY'S AGE OF 26 ISN'T A REASON ENOUGH TO KEEP HIM..THIS LOSSER ARGUMENT HAS PASSED .

3- HENNE ,HIS TIME IS NOW...THE UPSIDE THERE IS HUGE.

4-SIGN ORTON,VY OR KOLB .
5-THE QB FROM THE DRAFT SHOULD BE READY THE FOLLOWING YEAR UNLESS IRELAND WANT'S TO GET FIRED AND HIS CARRER AS GM IN THE NFL IS HISTORY FOR EVER .

Why Thiggy Cocoa because Marshall endorsed him out of frustration, I don`t even trust him to carry the clip board anymore, how`s that. I hate the fact that are 2 options come down to Q.B.`s that have proven efficient at moving there teams down the field and turning it over in the redzone. I wonder if there is a stat for RZ defficiency cause money says Thiggy had a high % in 09 in K.C. to go along with Henne`s in 09-10.

We would be more agressive I will grant you that but the int`s will go up it was his rap at K.C. very exciting player but turn over prone and we all saw just how right on that assesment was at the end of 09 against Pitt.
No thanks, the more I see it the more I understand that if this CBA business goes into late July this season is a wash !!! We will undoubtedly get stuck with the same coaching staff into 2012 and we can rack up all the talent we want but were basically Dallas South under those set circumstances, rudderless ship.

ODINSEYE,

YES YOU BEEN A HENNE SUPPORTER ,I AGREE BUT LATELY YOU BEEN ON THE LOSERS ARGUMENT WAGON ................

P.S........THE WORST ST PATRICK'S DINNER;

CABBAGE
CARROTS AND OLD CORN BEEF WAS FROZEN ALL YEAR LONG UNTIL TODAY FOR THE DONKEYS TO ENJOY ...LOL

Hey odin I would also rather be a sniper in the grassy nole than one on the 9th floor of a book depository as well, lol

Cocoa,

From the time I knew for sure that Henning was gone, I started wondering about Thigpen.

I think the FO still rates Henne well above Thigpen. Don't know if that's right or wrong, but I believe that's how they're thinking.

I don't know about Daboll, I just don't know anything about him that instills confidence. The point is though, Thigpen could just be the right OC away from the light coming on.

Well, I guess Henne could be too-DOOH!

NEVER MIND! DISREGARD THIS POST ALTOGETHER!!!!

Hey Aloco any Irishman worth his salt isn`t thinking about cabbage or corn beef pal, more like keep the pitchers coming, some more stale pee covered peanuts and were the hell is the hotdog stand anyway !!! lol

Hey, I'm not saying NOT to draft a QB. But just look at who we have under contract for 2011. Henne, that's it and that means we need not 1 but 2 QBs. The popular 'vote' is draft a QB and sign a vet. Vince Young is the ONLY one I'd consider and he's a head case.

I DROVE TODAY TO A CAR MECHANIC TO CHANGE THE THERMO IN THE WHICH COST 18 DOLLARS AND HE ASKED 240 DOLLARS ,WHEN I SAID WHY ,HE SAID B/C I HAVE TO MOVE EVERY THING IN THE CAR TO DO ,I WENT TO ANOTHER GUY WHO ASKED FOR 65 DOLLARS BUT WE SETTLED ON 45 DOLLARS.

99 PERCENT OF CAR MECHANICS ARE DISHONEST .

When did/does Thigpen's contract expire?

If it's at all possible I would throw him into the mix with Henne, the vet and the rookie this off season.

The bigger the net, the better your chances.

99 PERCENT OF CAR MECHANICS ARE DISHONEST .

Posted by: ALoco | March 17, 2011 at 08:09 PM

Aloco, that's why I'm proud to be a musician!

The thing you probably don't realize is that here in America, the Doctors are just as bad a mechanics. They're chasing rabbitts, all the while padding the bill.

It'a a hit or miss proposition, but either way, you'll pay!!!!

WITH DOCTORS YOU CAN'T LOOK UNDER THE HOOD AND SHOP AROUND FOR A DOCTOR WHO'S CHEAPER BUT MECHANICS ARE CHANGABLE .

So your saying it's easier to get a second opinion on your thermostat than it is your heart?

Yeah, I think you just made my point for me.

THANK YOU!!!!

ODIN,

WHAT DID HAPPEN TO BOBBD12 ?

Bobbyd12?

Aloco, you didn't hear?

Yeah, he was working in customs at the airport. The next thing you know, the FBI and DEA jointly busted a major smuggling operation.

I'm not saying he was involved, but the date and time stamp on his last post coincides nicely with the date of the "Takedowns".

Heck, he could be in the witness protection program by now.....................

The dolphins will work out Josh Portis Q.B. / W.R. from California of Pennsylvania Div. 2, cousin of Clinton Portis, J.Portis is 6`3" 211 pds. while posting a 4.5/40 Character issues after transferring from UF and Maryland in 2 year span.

Other Fins prospects of interest include:
OL Byron Bell - New Mexico
LB Ricky Elmore - ARZ.
WR Terrence Mcrae - Ohio
QB Cam Newton - Auburn
LB Brooks Reed - ARZ.
TE Julius Thomas - Portland St.
TE D.J. Williams - Arkansas

The link is, http://bleacherreport.com/articles/637642-2011-nfl-draft-miami-dolphins-to-work-out-controversial-qb-joshportis

Odin, Thigpen's a RFA under the last year of CBA. The Dolphins tendered Thigpen a couple of weeks ago as a RFI which probably means nothing. When the new CBA is a done deal, it will most likely go back to the old rules....3 yrs RFA and 4 UFA which means Thigpen will be a UFA.

Bottom line is, Thigpen wants a chance to compete and being a UFA, he can go w/o compensation.

I missed it...was there a Bobby 12 sighting?

The Dolphins Suck
Period

You guys are gonna love this little doozy this guy has us trading every pick for the following combination of RFA. I like some of the ideas though, some being the key word.

http.//bleacherreport.com/articles/636593-nfl-trade-rumors-5-players-the-miami-dolphins-must-make-deals-for

fin4life,

I used bring stuff here from other sites all the time. It keeps it interesting when news is slow. Good looking out-Thanks!

Cocoa,

I agree and Thanks for the info.

Aloco,

You just keep on being ALoco-LOL!

Since it's St. Pattys Day just let me say:

The Irish are a DIRECT result of the Norse Warrior Vikings TAKING the Island away from the ancient English! They were badly mismanaging the Island, so we had to "liberate" it and teach them how it's done!

VALHALLA!!!!

Heineken! Heineken! Heineken! Heineken!

Does anyone know the precise status of VY? Is it certain the Titans are parting ways with him or is there some doubt about that?

No doubt 0x80 NFL Network had a piece on the subject the other day were they all but assured he wouldn`t be back, after the CBA is signed the Titans will owe him a 4.5 mil bonus when t`s expected he will be let go by the way you can add that to his base for 2011 which is another 8.8, that`s 13.3 mil and it all counts against there cap in 2011.

Warren Moon, Coach Munchak`s old teamate and friend has been urging him not to pass on Cam Newton if he were to fall to them, there is even speculation he might be there Q.B. Coach

Odin, ain't that the reason why there's a lot of red headed Irish? Sold a lot of them for slaves too I think.

odin, here is the TE from Portland ST. by the way Rob will love this kid, a former Bsketball star

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/636862-2011-nfl-draft-miami-dolphins-interested-in-former-hoops-standout-julius-thomas

Makes you wonder, now that Fisher is gone, if the are really interested in Cam Newton, you have to wonder if that says there is a major red flag on VY. I agree with those that say he is probably the only FA QB worth bringing in, but at a steep price, got to wonder what the Titans know that we don't.

fin4life,

Their mock says:

1st Andy Dalton QB, TCU

3rd. Kelvin Sheppard ILB, LSU

4th. Jake Kirkpatrick C, TCU

5th. Jerrel Jernigan WR, Troy

6th. Shane Vereen RB, Cal

7th. Stephen Skelton TE, Fordham U

7th. Will Hill S, Fla.

I like Kelvin Shepard and I got Jernigan on my mock. I think he goes sooner than the 5th though.

I dunno, I think this mock kind of sucks!

????

Yeah 0x80, I think most if not all of the available QBs will cost big money and/or pics. I just don't see it but that's just me.

I agree odin threw it out there to try and break the aimless funk we were in, did you get to the one about trading all our picks yet, cause that guy is high !!

fin4 - I as well actually suggested trading all our picks for next years picks! That was right after I found out TS was staying for another season. I've backed off on that. Now I say use the 15 pick and trade the rest!

0x80, the problem lies in that even though Fisher is gone some of the Coaches mainly there new head coach was there last season, when NFL Net. explained that after being benched late in the season in a loss to Wash. VY flipped out in the locker room started in on Fisher with language that would make us blush, it got to the point were players and new coach Munchak had to restrain him, after that episode which was witnessed by some FO people he lost Owner Bud Adams.

Julius Thomas

Thomas reportedly had an impressive pro day Monday, choosing to only participate in position drills while standing on his workout numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. He measured in at 6-foot-4 3/8 and 248 pounds and ran a 4.64-second 40-yard dash in February.

Looking to follow in the footsteps of Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates in transitioning from the hardwood to the gridiron,

Sounds pretty raw with a lot of potential. I'm going to look for some "film(youtube-LOL)"on this guy.

fin4life,

Don't be afraid to copy and paste this stuff!

I'm lazy-LOL!

Thanks

Thanks fin4, well that kind of scares me off a little at that asking price... I'd be more likely to take a thug over a psycho character.

0x80 since your a fan of trading all picks check out the link I put up at 8:58 some ideas aren`t bad others I know you`ll hate.

o.k. odin here`s a piece on potential w.r. thru FA

The Dolphins aren't going to be handing out any huge contracts with $50 million devoted to Brandon Marshall, so you can pretty much forget anyone like Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, or Sidney Rice landing in Miami.

That doesn't mean the Dolphins won't be entirely quiet in free agency, however, as there are a few appealing options for talented speed receivers that won't require blockbuster contracts. Guys like Steve Breaston (Cardinals), Johnnie Lee Higgins (Raiders), Jacoby Jones (Texans), Lance Moore (Saints), and Brad Smith (Jets) could either start alongside Marshall or be a situational deep threat and returner.

Other potential No.2 receiver options that don't necessarily fit the pure-speed mold include James Jones (Packers) and Mike Sims-Walker (Jaguars). Sims-Walker flashed starter ability in Jacksonville and was Marshall's teammate at UCF

While the Dolphins don't have a glaring need at receiver, they could use another talented player at the position and thus will be considering it throughout the draft in April. While I find it unlikely the team uses a first-round pick on one, they could potentially target a speedster like Torrey Smith (Maryland) or Titus Young (Boise State) if they trade down to the late first.

Assuming the Dolphins get back into the second round via trade, there are a handful of potential players available that could be of interest, including Leonard Hankerson (Miami), Randall Cobb (Kentucky), Jerrel Jernigan (Troy), and Edmond Gates (Abilene Christian). Smith and/or Young could also be available in the second, depending on how things unfold.

If you're looking for burners a little later, players like Denarius Moore (Tennessee), Ricardo Lockette (Fort Valley State), Ronald Johnson (USC), and Aldrick Robinson (SMU) could probably be had in the middle or late rounds.

In terms of undrafted free agent possibilities, someone like West Virginia's Jock Sanders could be intriguing. He measures in at just 5-foot-6 an 181 pounds, but he has the second-best 10-yard split time in this year's class behind Julio Jones.
