Dolphins on the road this week to study ... everybody!

The Dolphins are on the road.

General Manager Jeff Ireland, head coach Tony Sparano and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll are among a contingent of Dolphins representatives who traveled from Auburn's campus Sunday -- where they met and worked out quarterback Cam Newton -- to Alabama's campus Monday -- where they worked out and met with running back Mark Ingram -- to Arkansas Tuesday -- where they worked out and met with quarterback Ryan Mallet and, according to NFL.com, tight end D.J. Williams.

The Miami contingent, or significant parts of it, will be on campus at Virginia Tech today to check out the talent there. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor and tight end Andre Smith are of interest to the Dolphins. As happened at Fayetteville, Ark. on Tuesday, the quarterback will be scheduled to throw to the tight end.

Both Williams and Smith are considered outstanding blockers. Neither will ever be mistaken for Tony Gonzalez. These are H-back types. Sparano said he wants a run-first offense. These guys would certainly add to that.

And the conclusion you should draw from all of this is that the Dolphins are merely doing their due diligence. They are turning over every rook. (Yes, that was supposed to be a pun.)

There's been much speculation that the Dolphins will pick Ingram with the No. 15 overall selection. I will say for the hundreth time since I was told as much by a source: Miami wants to trade down in the coming draft. The Fins believe the value of a pick later in the draft with the addition of a late secod-round pick would be higher (depending on who is actually available at No. 15 on draft day) compared to simply picking at their scheduled spot.

Having said that, the team is considering highly talented players that come with some major flags.

Ingram? Doesn't have prototype size and his speed is a source of interest, depending on whom you're talking to. He isn't necessarily explosive, although the Dolphins aren't overly concerned about that aspect because he's quite dependable. Don't forget these are the negatives. There a ton of positives that make him perhaps the No. 1 back in the draft, according to one scout I trust.

Mallet? Great arm. Good accuracy. He has most of the tangible skills that should make him a fine QB. So why isn't he a certain Top 10 pick? Why isn't he even a certified first round pick?

The problem with him, I'm told, is not whispers of narcotics use or even a drunken disorderly arrest last year. The question with Mallet, one very good NFL source tells me, is the kid is said to have absolutely zero leadership skills. None.

That might not be a big deal if Mallet were, say, a guard or tight end. But a quarterback? Leadership is arguably 50 percent of the job.

Understand this: The Dolphins have a quarterback today, on the roster, who can make practically every throw. He works exceedingly hard. He is smart enough to know what to do. But everyone wonders if he has it. Everyone wonders why he seems so robotic. Everyone wants to see life and leadership from him.

So why is it that the Dolphins would pay a premium draft pick for a kid whose leadership skills are being questioned at this early stage in his career?

To double down on similar problems?

This is where the meetings the Fins are having with Mallet must bring them a comfort level that they can mold Mallet or bring something out of him he apparently hasn't shown in abundance already. It's a hard sell. Yes, someone will believe they can bring it out of him. But at the expense of a first-round pick?

Taylor? He's a leader. He's athletic. He's a worker. But he's not gifted with the kind of accuracy, arm, and size that other QBs in the draft apparently have. He's not a first-round pick. He's probably not a second-round pick.

And after Miami's painful and failed experience with Pat White, the Dolphins are certain not to repeat the mistake again in that they're not going to project undersized, run-first QBs higher than they did in the past.

Oh, did I forget to mention Cam Newton? Yeah, I guess I did. That's because I don't seem him being available when the Dolphins pick at No. 15.

THE WORST ACTOR TO ACT LOVE SCENS IS ..WILL FERREL .

Yeah Henne can make every throw...usually to someone on the other team.

Craig, fair enough. Those WR's you mentioned still haven't shown much and barely got off the bench, which concerns me, but I agree Moore or Wallace could be diamonds in the rough. I see J Jones as an instant day 1 high impact starter for any team. I think as a whole JJ would make our offense more dangerous from the get go. It's a mute point, he was already projected as a top 10 and it seems his stock is only rising lately.

there is one SIGNIFICANT fact everyone has failed to mention in the ryan mallet discussion:

ryan mallet wears the #15 and we hold the #15 pick in the draft. it's an omen.

(it's also just a joke, just in case)

if mallet is there at 15 AND WE CANT TRADE DOWN id take him

but we must do whatever it takes to trade down to redeem our second and a later first round pick who knows mallet might drop that far ive seen crazier things happen in the draft...lol

but im really liking leshoure late in the first

although ingram had played better defneses he did have a bad line to block for him and a great compliment in trent richardson

Pete,

I'll tell you what. If the Dolphins are indeed very interested in Mallet. They would have to spring the trap at #15. There's no guarantee for them he'll be available in a back of the 1st rd draft scenario.

Craig, I just pasted all of that from the S.S. story. But PLEEEAAASSSEEE go read it because if you don't you're missing out. It's an awesome read and will explain everything you just asked me.

There are a few smear campaigns going on and this is the only story I have read that tears that all apart. And it makes valid points in doing so. Anything I've read about Mallet has no depth just , "he's this or he's that" with no facts to back it up. This story actually gives you instances and facts.

It also shows that not ONE player or coach he has ever played with or for has ever had anything but nice comments on him. He is very well respected all around and his teammates love him as well as coaches.

bad ass line to block for him *** coreection

dm1,

D-Bess also holds the #15. Which coincidentally wouldnt give up even to Brandon Marshall! LOL...........

Pete,

I admire your conviction and support for Mallett. I'm glad you're not adamant that he needs to be picked at 15. I'd have to think more about him later on, possibly first round. I'm all for having competition at QB and you can never have enough good QB's, I just wonder how we're going to be able to fill some of the other holes.

Who do guys like after the top 4? I see a lot of discussion about the other QBs in the draft but always different orders. Where do you go after the top 4? Dalton? Ponder? Kaepernick? Stanzi? Curious.....

Greg M,RE: your comments @ 10:37, Dont try logic on Lil Aloco, it wont work..........

better to go running back and maybe even another position depending on the value of the pick where we land later in the 1st

id rather cough up a 2012 pick later aafter all this lockout stuff calms down for a veteran qb

We could give Mallet the #7 if D-Bess again isnt willing to give up #15. Yeah, we could give him #7 because if Mallet's drafted at #15 you can safely say Henne wont be needing the #7 in Miami anymore. LOL...........

actually he can have number 10 once worn by a good leader hopefully the energy rubbs off on him

Pete,

Again I trust your judgement on this. My only comment might be, wasn't a lot of this stuff said about Henne coming out of College too. Good guy, good competitor, well-liked, good poise etc....I'm not necessarily knocking Mallett, I'm just saying something those don't translate well to the NFL. I think in Henne, we've got a guy who has all the physical tools in the world but who has been a bit lost the last couple of years. What happens if he comes on great this year? I think you're ultimately going to have a guy who walks away for nothing as Brees did with San Diego and you've wasted another pick on a QB.

newsflash - peyton mannings got charm (!)(?)

- ryan mallet is either a great leader or a great b**lsh*tter (ta pete) which to me equates to the same thing (as i'm a great bs*itter too!)

- most of the (so called) top ten would be a good pick at 15 apart from c newton (who's the most likely to drop on draft day, imo)

when's dinner time?

That's true Dying. And then in that case I would probably be scared off. If he busts out of the second it's a lot less of a big deal then if we picked him in the first over Ingram, Mallet busts, and Ingram goes to a pro bowl. The Dolphins would be crucified.

CraigM,

Henne may have the tools, but the lock on his toolbox seems to have rusted.

AROUND NOW WOLF

SO LETS SAY WE DROP TO TO THE 25TH PICK WHO WOULD YOU PICK REALISTICALLY SPEAKING A PLAYER THAT COULD BE THERE????? ????????????? ??????

JUST WANT TO GET YOUR INSIGHTS ON IT

Pete,

If Mallet drops to 2nd rd, Bellichik may take a long look at drafting him. He has the 1st pick of the 2nd rd. Brady's coming into year 11, I think. And 3-4yrs sitting behind Brady and this kid comes out of the chute like Rodgers had 3yrs to sit behind Favre.

Think about it! LOL.........

apologies on the caps lol

is mike nolan scouting on his own? or does he already know his line-up for next season!!!

POEPLE,DONT BE FOOLED BY DBs BABBLE,HE FLIP FLOPS SO MUCH HE CAN BE A FISH OUT OF WATER,NOW I SEE THE CEO OF THE GANG OF DEFEET HAS ARRIVED,MENACE,PLEASE GET A JOB,I CAN SEA MY TAX DOLLARS ARE GOING TO FARMERS.

DB,

I agree with you on th Pats taking a guy like Mallett. I've said for a while now I think they will draft an upper-tier QB this year and have him sit for 2-3 years behind Brady. Brady has a few years left but the blueprint on how to do this has been shown by Green Bay and I fully expect the Pats to follow suit in the second. It could be Mallett, it could be Locker or it could be someone else.

I was high on Kepernick but for some reason he's reminding me more and more of Beck.

I don't like the idea of taking any of those players you mentioned because they are all projects. The only QB that could seriously push Henne that will be available to us is Mallet. He left Michigan when there was a coaching change because he didn't want to play in a spread offense. He wanted to play in a pro stylr offense so he would be able to take snaps from center and ready his NFL game. And did he go down in class? NOPE. He chose the SEC when he could have went to an easier conference and put up really huge numbers and possibly been a top ten pick.

Look, if these "character issue" stories weren't there he would be a lock top ten pick. And as I pointed out the only people who question his character are people who don't even know the kid. They are outsiders. Every one who played with him or coached him calls those stories false.

One perfect example was a game in which they were getting beat Mallet was seen sitting on a seperate bench away from his offense. Well the media ran the story as he was being cocky and a baby. That he was blaming the line for the loss. When his coach and teammates were recently asked what happened they were shocked to hear that people thought that. They said, "no man, you have it all wrong, Ryan was blaming himself so badly that he didn't feel he deserved to sit on the same bench with us".

So don't believe everything the media tells you, they're clueless when it comes to what goes on in the locker room.

In a year when the Pats have all these extra picks it's the perfect year to do this.

ARMANDO,

WHO FAKED ME NOW MR HONEST ?

db+craig

as long as they pick a dud that's fine by me,

we need them to do plenty trading up this year and come away with very little - its almost as important as our draft!!

Pete,

You have no problem with how Mallett handled the questions at the Combine? I thought he handled it really poorly and unfortunately in the NFL players come under an awful lot of scrutiny from the media and the fans. I'm not sure he's going to be able to handle it. I get that he's a young kid but surely someone should have coached him better on hos to handle the situation. I thought he came across childess and immature and I wonder when things are going bad if he's going to be able to handle the abuse or pull a Ryan Leaf and fly off the handle. Those are some of the things that I worry about the guy.

pete

if mallet's all you're saying we need a few more rumours to drop him down a bit as long as our fo knows they're rumours, a bit more smearing and he might fall into our laps

get on it boys

WE STAYED AT OUR SPOTS TWO OF THE THREE YEARS AND MADE GREAT PICK UPS.

WE TRADE BACK LAST YEAR AND GOT NOTHING IN RETURN FOR IT.

THE YEARS WE DIDN'T WE CAME OUT WITH GREAT PLAYERS.

I THINK WE SHOULD TRADE THE 1ST PICK WITH CROWDER AND MOVE UP.

THEN DRAFT JULIO JONES.

WE FIX THE PASSING GAME AND DOBBINS CAN PLAY THE MIDDLE.

OR

TRADE CROWDER FOR A 3RD ROUND. THEN TRADE BOTH 3S FOR A HIGH 2ND. DRAFT THE BEST PLAYER AT 15 AND 36.

SIGN SIMS-WALKER.

RESIGN RICKY THEN SIGN SIMS-WALKER

watch,
new england will go from 6 picks in the first 3 rds to 9 and i will end up buying a new television.

Craig you have to watch the videos and read that story. Mallet is no Henne. Look at the videos in that story and look at how accurate he is on the deep pass. He completed a crazy number of deep passes percentage wise. Has great conviction when he sees a receiver. Throws the ball befor5e he's open to the spot where he will be. Has an excellent feel for where to put the pass in respect to where the cb is located. The only similarities in the two are arm strength and Mallet beats him. In the videos one of his passes was a 45 yard pass that he put on a rope. the ball sailed in almost straight with no arc! 45 yards! And the reason he adjusted his throw like that was because the CB had over the top help from the FS. He had to put it low and behind his WR. He completed that pass, Henne would have never thrown the ball. Once again I'm not advocating a first round pick, just saying I really hope we can find a way to get him somehow. Would love to see a qb stable of Palmer (if available), Henne, AND Mallet.

ALoco,

If you were honestly faked then write down the time of the fake, blog, and email it to Armando. Then we'll all know who was the imposter because he would be banned.

If not youre full of s*hit about claiming to be faked! LOL.........

DON'T TALK TO ME MR SABOTAGE ....

LOL At Lil Aloco, I hope the phins sent someone else besides sporono and Ireland..., I mean if there looking for FG kickers Tony's the guy for that and if there looking for a bust at any position Jeff is the guy for that, I only Hope that Lil Steven has some type of intellegent scouts out there...

THE CUBAN BANANA .

JUSTIN CREDIBLE,

Are you aware what not having a new cba prior to the draft means? You arent trading anyboby for anything my man! LOL...............

Pete,

Once again I admire your passion for this guy. I don't know enough about his history. Why did he leave Michigan and go to Arkansas?

WELL HERE'S TO HOPING

CHEERS

Cuban Menance,

As long as you and I are in this blog everyone else is safe. Seems you and I are always on ALo-con-us' mind! You gotta love it!LOL...............

ARMANDO,

YOU READ THIS BLOG AND YOU KNOW I WAS FAKED @ 12;20 ...SO SHOW US HOW THE HELL FAIR ARE YOU ..TELL US WHO FAKED ME ...OR SHOULD MY NAME TO BE KRIS TO TELL US ?

Craig, how he handles questions from the moron media members is of no concern to me. I would do the same thing. They have to answer the stupid questions but it doesn't mean they have to do cart wheels and a juggling act while they answer them.

And besides I saw some of the questions and it seemed to me he was just guarding his answers. He was being careful with what he was saying. AND because of the smear campaign they were asking him a ton of loaded questions about drug use and character concerns. Most other players were given fluff questions so in that respect I thought he handled himself fine.

Would you take Philip Rivers if we could trade for him? Ever watch him talk to the media? He's a d**k but he gets the job done.

Breed,RE: Lil Aloco, Someone impersonating a imposter????, Again I think that post just "Blew" my mind... Lol @ lil Aloco..

And Pete, I think it's complete wishful thinking on your part that we end up with Palmer, Henne AND Mallett. Nice try though....LOL.

The Palmer situation is going to be interesting because Mike Brown is a stubborn SOB. He won't do what anyone wants, which should have included firing Marvin Lewis. He moves to his own beat. Strange dude!! Old school....acts as his own GM. How's that working for you Mike?

He's concerned if he lets Palmer go the floodgates will open. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. My bet is that either Newton or Gabbert end up in Cinci.

ARMANDO COULD BE VERY WELL THE IMPOSTER .

Lil Aloco, If your so worried about being "Faked""Lmao", Sign up for typepad... Or whatever its called....

CraigM,

Rich Rodriguez loves the spread offense. Ryan Mallet knew he would sit when Rodriguez arrived. Rodriguez prefer the athletic run oriented type qb's.

He immediately went out to seek that type of qb. Denard Robinson currently plays for Michigan. That's the Rodriguez type qb. Mallet saw the handwriting on the wall upon Rodriguez entrance as new HC that year and tranferred out.

I'm not saying the entire media are morons. But those guys seemed to have it out for Mallet. And after going back and reading some fo their stories on him it made more sense. It seemed to me like they almost want this kid to fail because they have written so many opinion pieces on him and don't want to look stupid. I wish they would just report the facts. Drug use? The kid has never once failed a drug test. Character issues? Every teammate and coach raves about him. Haven't heard one person who knows him say they don't like him or he has issues. The only ones saying this are people who don't know him. How is that we believe them over people who spend every day with him? Not concerned at all. Marino was a coke head who regularly yelled at teammates when he came out of college. He actually did fail drug tests.

IT'S TOO BAD THE WRITER OF THE BLOG IS THE IMPOSTER .

Cuban Menance,

ALo-con-us lies again. If he were truly faked he would email Armando. ALo-con-us is only here to seek attention. Evidenced by his fake rants at Armando instead of to Armando. He knows Armando isnt here right now! LOL................

It doesn't matter, we won't get him. He will go on to have an awesome career for the Pats or whomever and we will get Ingram who will be riding stationary bikes with Crowder during the regular season.

Breed, Saw a couple games that Mallet played last year, He looked good, As far as his "Personal conduct" is concerned I did a lot worse when I was 21 years old.....

Pete,

You're right about Rivers....and Cutler too.

But the thing is Pete, you HAVE to care what the media says and does. They have a big impact on guys. They are in their faces all the time. That's part of why some guys crack. Some guys can't take it. Doesn't mean it's right but there's a wrong way and a right way to go about it. I think the kid has a lot to learn in that regard. The media can be you're friend or your enemy. And don't kid yourself, the media can have a big impact on the fans too. It's an instant communication world and a lot of what is said is taken by gospel by the fans, wrongly of course. These players are all wbig and tough on the outside but at the end of the day they are going to be under immense pressure to perform and they just want to perform. Think of how things have been for Chad Henne his first two years in the league. He's had a rough ride from fans and media alike. That's what Mallett has in store for himself. Can he hold up? We'll see...

MR SABOTAGE ,

DO YOU GET PAID BY this blog ?

Yes, very wishful thinking on my part. I just want to have a good qb crew. How nice does that look on paper? They could do it but you're right the GM is a tough nut to crack.

that last part should have said 'they all want to be loved'....

Typepad doesn't work cuban. It can be taken over by an imposter very easily. I pointed this ouit to the Herald and they did nothing to fix it. That's when I canceled my account.

Pete, Do you think Ingram will take away Channing Crowders NORDIC STATIONARY bike contract in the near future???(I think he will)(your thoughts)(But At least Crowder will have the Gieco"Caveman" Commericals)(No way Ingram can take those, He looks nothing like a caveman)
