The Miami Dolphins are still at this hour trying to find out as much about the domestic violence incident involving Brandon Marshall and his wife as they can.
So everything from here on comes with the caveat that new details could change the way the team feels and reacts.
Having said that, the Dolphins are not of the mind to get rid of Brandon Marshall.
It has been well reported by profootballtalk.com and Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post that the Dolphins can cut the cord on Marshall if they want by simply not paying him a $3 million option bonus they owe him. That bonus was set to be paid April 2, but assuming it was not because the NFL was under a lockout and had suspended all insurance and contract payments by then, the Dolphins have the ability to make a choice on Marshall when the lockout ends.
The choice is simple: Pay the bonus, keep Marshall at least two more seasons, pay him guaranteed monies slated for 2011 and 2012, and deal with whatever drama Marshall has either on or off the field.
The other choice is to disconnect from Marshall because he has had a long history of problems, particularly of the domestic violence variety, and a leopard simply cannot change its spots. This option means the Dolphins will have had Marshall for only one season while giving up two second-round picks to Denver for that in return.
I am reporting the Dolphins currently, today, at this hour, have zero intention to get rid of Brandon Marshall. They aren't walking away from the investment that easily.
That doesn't mean they don't think he's not troubled. As one club official told me, "He has issues with women, that is pretty obvious." And the club knows Marshall isn't going to give up women regardless of the direction his marriage goes.
So the potential for future drama is there.
The Dolphins are wary of this current episode. They are sending Marshall messages of support through intermediaries. They want him to know they have his back. They want him and others to understand Marshall was the alleged victim here.
But the Dolphins are also eager to learn more about what, if anything, caused the stabbing incident in which Michi Nogami-Marshall plunged a kitchen knife into Marshall's abdomen, confessed to the crime, and stated she was acting in self-defense.
For now, however, Marshall is a Dolphin and will remain so. That's the plan. It is written in sand.

Rye, it seems obvious to me he has problems with domestic violence. He had a few incidents with his girlfriend before he met his wife. I know he has been to counseling, but I'm not sure if it helped. We don't know for sure what happened here, who instigated it or if the other party retaliated. However, either way, he is still under probation for the personal conduct policy, so if Goodell really wants to suspend him he will, no matter what. Hopefully he will be cleared when the facts come out, but given his history.....

WHAT DO YOU TELL A WOMEN WITH 2 BLACK EYES?, NOTHING,SHE'S BEEN TOLD TWICE.
Posted by: ALoco | April 23, 2011 at 11:57 PM
Seems obvious? He must have 7 instances of domestic violence with a few different women by now. I'd say its more than obvious. The state law is one thing but as you say, Goodall will make his own judgement. And even if Goodall doesn nothing now, the next time for sure he will, Marshall has ran out of chances.

I was just thinking, Marshall must be one charming individual. In each of his domestic violence cases, the women dropped the charges. But not only that...He committed two unnecessary bonehead penalities last year in back to back games and Sparano too did nothing (dropped the charges). He was warned after the first one, and then he throws the ball in Cutlers face the very next game. TS would have suspended any other player for that even for a quarter. He benched Vontae and Smith and Porter for lesser deedes, yet he showed favortism with Marshall.

Marshall and Michi will work out all the legal aspects. They probably already are as he's been released from the hospital and she's out on bond.
She has already been charged. They can't change that. Now they will both refuse to cooperate with police just like they did last time. Disorderly charges were dropped then and they'll hope for the same this time.
Marshall will promise the best attorneys, so she'll drop the self defense claims. She'll plea the charges down to a lesser offense if they don't get dropped altogether.
The lockouts bad enough and if Brandon gets a future suspension it will only hurt both of them more in the long run financially. So she'll shut up about any wrong doings on Brandon's part.
She'll take the hit because she ALREADY drew the charges. That is, if they're not dropped altogether. At worst she'll get a tether/home detention and some probation. The courts will require all kinds of counselling. Most of it geared towards anger management and conflict resolution skills.
Team officials will call for AT LEAST some marriage counseling.
Case Closed, End of Story..............at least temporarily....................
PS: I wonder if sleeping with one eye open messes with your hand eye coordination?

I say they should trade Marshall for Ted Ginn! he'll make us proud with a second chance.
Posted by: E'LL | April 24, 2011 at 03:39 AM
LOL, Normal people dont pull out knives on each other. How ridiculous to attempt to clasify him and hsi wife as rolle models and acceptable in any corporate environment. The dolphons should release him as well and the NFL should as well to all others that behave as animals. NFL players as this have killed people, assaulted people, robbed people, and it continues. They should bann them from the league. What a joke. These players afffect other peoples lives that are not reported around them and they continue to earn millions per year. Tell the family member of a dad ot husband that is 6 feet under why the player that caused it should continue to earn millions and be gratified by the NFL.

this organization is a mess, what a joke of a franchise. so glad we arent playing football this year
Posted by: dusty bottoms | April 24, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Has the team reached out to former Dolphins WR Irving Fryar? He had similar issues but turned his life around. He might make an excellent mentor for Marshall.

FIRE THE GM TODAY!!!!!
Posted by: me | April 24, 2011 at 12:10 PM
The problem with Brandon is he will continue to get into trouble. No matter what everyone thinks we are not going to the superbowl this year we have too many holes to fill. That being the case we should cut our ties with Brandon now before he ends up killing his wife or getting into big trouble.
He was okay last season and is a great talent. But some here feel he is a good teammate. I disagree. He was a constant complainer and even cost the "team" with his on field antics.
I say we let Brandon go or try to trade him after the lockout ends. In the draft we trade back to aquire the 2nd round pick we spent on him and now we basically got a one year lease on him.
The fact is we are still "rebuilding" and will be until we get a franchise QB. I have not given up on Henne but this is his last year to prove himself. We have way too many needs to consider ourselves contenders this season if there is one. Besides if we suck bad enough this year we will get luck in the draft next year.
Shore up the O-Line and RB position this draft and get Luck and a stud WR next draft. Then we are on our way.
Posted by: Fins-Fan CALI | April 24, 2011 at 12:16 PM
There is no way we are dumping Brandon Marshall. The investment of two 2nd rounders is too high, and the need for a #1 wide receiver too great to dump him for any reason short of repeated gross insubordination.
Posted by: Tikkanen | April 24, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Cutting ties with Marshall? Puh-lease. We're not talking about Pat White here. That's not to say that what happened isn't of serious concern but on a team that gave up 2 second rounders and a big contract. A team with him as the *only* legit weapon on an anemic offense Brandon Marshall isn't going anywhere.
Posted by: T. Martin | April 24, 2011 at 01:07 PM
Brandon Marshall has the profession, athletism, charm, and the domestic violence background of O.J. Simpson. If Nicole had a knife instead of O.J., he may of ended up in the hospital like Brandon & she'd still be alive. Check out ESPN's story on Brandon Marshall's ex. I'm a big Fin Fan & I wish we had our 2 number 2 draft pics back. We've been dupped by the Marshall charm.
Posted by: Felix | April 24, 2011 at 03:06 PM
Cali, you say of Henne what I said LAST year. I have now given up. Did you watch the games last year? On several occasions we were down by 7 or less and had a chance to win at the end. In how many of thise games did Hene deliver? ZERO. In several others we were up by 7 or less and had a chance to put it away by getting a first down or 2. Every time, we did not, and had to rely on the D to bail us out. In most of those games, whether ahead or behind, we did not even get a first down. To be a QB on a contender (and yes I know we aren't this year or probably the next few, until we get a new GM and coach), you have to deliver in the clutch, not choke every time.
Posted by: WOOD | April 24, 2011 at 03:11 PM
Wood, I watched every game last year and saw how bad Henne was. I'm not saying he is the answer at QB, but I have also seen many QB's struggle their second year taking the majority of the snaps.
In a perfect world we would trade back in the first to pick up a 2nd and switch 3rds with the team we trade back with. We would then get Mallet in the first, the TE from Norte Dame in the second, and a speed back in the thrid. With the rest of the draft we could fill our holes along the O-line and get some LB depth.
When free agency starts we would make a huge push to sign Deangelo Williams. This of course is in a perfect world.

Fins need to cut ties with marshall and with his ugly mess of a wife!
Posted by: ron in boca | April 24, 2011 at 06:22 PM
Its not just Brandon Marshall. Its the entire NFL. And its fun to watch/listen to. I mean, everyone screws up from time to time. EVERYONE. But more is written about concerning NFL players. Why? NFL fans read it. That simple, we love to evesdrop, peak into bedrooms, whatever to see millionares screw up. Makes us feel better somehow. Why else would the Miami Herald make so much drama over a domestic disput? Im a retired police officer w/ almost 30 yrs experience and I can tell you there are domestic disputes every night of every day, of every month, of every year. B. Marshall is just one. I'll wager that a good portion of the folks writting on this page has had the cops at their house for a domestic. Wanna bet?
Posted by: WileyDolphin | April 25, 2011 at 10:17 AM
WileyDolphin,
I will take that bet with you. I'm currently a Police Sergeant in California and know you are correct about domestic violence incidents occurring all the time, even every night.
I also know that unless there is an outside source which steps in it is a cyclical even, meaning it will continue. Brandon Marshall has a history of Domestic Violence and in this case he happens to be the victim.
The bottom line with Marshall is that he is a great football player, but his off the field behavior is not one I would want on my team. It is being reported that his own team is not supprised by this type of event. What does that say about the confidence Marshall commands from his own team?
The organization should cut or trade him as soon as it is possible.
Posted by: Fins-Fan CALI | April 25, 2011 at 11:08 AM
The hormones are raging they are differnt in differnt people and Brandon has no shortage. So... you have to make the decision to deal with it or not. By giving up 2 picks anf a 50m contract the fins have decided to deal with it long before this happend. I would hope they wernt nieve enough to think this issue would not come up. So folks they made a calculated risk. Now its time to get to the draft and get some play makers!!!!!
Posted by: ericatl | April 25, 2011 at 12:14 PM
Brandon Marshall has proven on the field and off, that he is an immature person. Perhaps there is another sucker team out there who needs a receiver so badly that they would part with a draft pick for this guy. He might have been stabbed in the gut but he’s been nothing but a pain in the ass.
