Must never forget the RBs on Miami's radar

Enough about quarterbacks. We don't need no stinkin' quarterback!

(I jest.)

Yes, the Dolphins continue to be eyebrow deep in Ryan Mallet's visit, but they are also trying to address issues with their running back situation. Remember that Ronnie Brown, Patrick Cobbs and Ricky Williams are unsigned for 2011.

So the club today is also visiting with Kansas State's Daniel Thomas. He will be in town through Friday. Next week the club will be hosting a meet with Eastern Washington's Taiwan Jones, who is highly intriguing to me.

Thomas, a middle round candidate, looks the part of a Miami running back. He is 6-foot and 230 pounds. He isn't necessarily fast, having been timed in the 4.5 range. But he's something of a riddle on this one because he didn't run at the Indianapolis Combine and didn't the Senior Bowl due to a hamstring injury.

Thomas gained 1,585 yards on 298 carries in 2010.

He is by all accounts a great kid. Quiet. Son of a preacher. Team leader. That was very important to the Dolphins last year.

Jones, who is 5-11 and 195 pounds, is interesting based on his sheer speed and freakish hops. He had his pro day on Thursday and was timed in the 4.29 to 4.35 range, depending on which account you read and which scout is leaking the information. He also had a reported 41-inch vertical leap. There were 27 teams at his event.

Jones is not necessarily a full-time back. Teams think of him as a Chris Johnson type. If he produces like Chris Johnson, he'll be a stud. But I digress.

Jones comes with red flags. He has durability issues. He is coming off a broken foot that prevented him from participating in the Indianapolis Combine running drills. In fact, he was in a boot until a month ago. He had surgery on a sports hernia in 2009 that prevented him from participating in Spring practice last year. He also had a hand and shoulder injuries in 2009.

Oh, and he had a broken leg early in 2008.

Yeah, I know, it sounds like a disaster.

I didn't say he's a first overall pick.

I said he intrigues. He rushed for 1,742 last season and scored 14 TDs. He shared the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year award.

As you know the Dolphins need speed on offense. They need a home run hitter. Jones has scored on a 93-yard kickoff return and an 87-yard run from scrimmage.

I like him. A lot.

PLEASE DB DON'T RESPOND TO GRAIG LAST POST AS A GOOD WILL .

GREG M IS NONE OTHER THEN NJ PHIN FAN THE PLUMBER FROM NEW JERSY

Craig M-

I don;t know how many of these backs are every down backs anyway. I'd rather have Murray then Vareen-but I see your point. We're probably going to draft 2 rb's this year anyway. Almost need to. I think only Lex and Sheets are on the roster for next year right?

This is an extremely crucial offseason. Nfl history suggests that teams spending at least 2 consecutive seasons in "middle of the pack". Will do only one of 2 things the 3rd season:

Either they take the next step and move ahead. Or they regress. This is an extremely important offseason Dolphans.

DD,

I think every person that enters your mock should deal it down as they see fit, no restrictions !!

I tell you that I have a mock that I wish I could put up against the ones everybody is harping on!!!!

CraigM,

If youre willing to squash the dumbs*hit between the both of us, then I surely am. Life's far too short and Im all out of change. LOL..........

fin4life-

Yeah, in every one of my mocks that I've done I have Miami trading down with Chicago. I don't know why either. I think if there is a top rated OT still on the board that they will jump at the chance. Just my opinion.

fin4life,

Come on, give us a sneak preview buddy! LOL.........

GRAIG M ,

YOU GOT TO RESPOND IN KIND TO DB EXTENDING HIS HAND TO YOU ,COME ON ....PEACE ,THEN WE CAN POST FOOTBALL,PLEASE

BuckeyeFinFan,

I think I'd be fine with Ingram, Leshoure or Williams and I'd love to add a guy like D'Angelo Williams in FA. To me that would be a big upgrade over what we had last year in Ronnie and Ricky. Having said that Murray (later) and D'Angelo Williams might be good too.

I vote ALoco the Dolphins In Depth Goodwill Ambassador.

Seriously, ALoco-we need someone like you at the mediation table between the owners and players so we can get the NFL season started.

fin4life...Do as you please my man. I just thought some peramiters would make it easier. Like we talked about the other night. Those mocks that are questionable(even the ones that seem practicle) will be met with much ridicule and venom. But I suppose this is the fun part of the exercise right?

I'm going to draft all Montana players anyway! LOL.....

Cuban...The WAC? Jones was in the mighty Big Sky Conference. How dare you????

DB,

There's no point in being upset with each other but I'm still going to post your comments from WEEKS ago. I wouldn't make stuff like that up, even to make a point.

There's enough good posters on here for us both to carry on conversations.....and yep, life's too short!!

BuckeyeFinFan,

I'll second that motion. I think ALoco could get this lockout settled in next to no time.

LOL At Lil Aloco, He is the Henry Kissenger of the inter-net...........Even his writing has a forign accent......

Craig M-

If we had Free Agency then I think that would be a good start. We would probably have already signed D'Angelo by now (and probably a lineman and veteran QB too). But with the doubts of when Free Agency will start I think we draft a couple RB's this year.

EVERYBODY........

1-2-3.....

AWWWWWWWWWW.........

My Bad DD.........

Buckeye,

Could be. I know for sure that we need to grab at least one, pretty high up. Got to....no choice. Just too thin at the position.

I REALLY LIKE HIS BALANCE.

WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING I'M SURE MOST TALKED ABOUT HIS SPEEP BUT THE FACT HE WAS HIT ALOT AND KEPT RUNNING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

HE KEEPS HIS FEET UNDER HIS SHOULDERS AND FIGHT FOR THOSE XTRA YARDS.

HE WILL BE A NICE PICK UP.....

GRAIG M ,

WE LIKE TO HAVE PEACE BETWEEN YOU AND DB .... I TRUST YOUR GOOD HEART WILL WIN YOU OVER .....

Now that everything is right with the world....I can go to bed.....

I'm never on here this late anyway......

Drama was to to intense to go to sleeep......

CraigM,

I have no problem with you posting whatever. I never denied saying anything. I did say in like 3-4 years I believe Stanzi will be the best of the lot. But that was also before doing much homework on Mallet.

But I still believe in 3-5yrs Stanzi will be better than all the rest. Its just my opinion.

PS. I do take back all of the mean things I said earlier because I really hate being like that.

What do you guys think about Mario Fannin in the 7th round as a third down/return guy

DD,

I actually take your mock so seriously that even my wife and kids have no idea !

Don`t tell everybody what you think wait till Sunday!! DD I have a doozy for you !!!!!!!!!!

DB,

If you're been sincere about taking back the mean stuff that you said then I'm cool with that. I don't think you and I will see eye to eye on here. We're just different people. We both have strong opinions on things and we'll probably continue to clash. I'll do my best not to take it to lower levels....

TWAIN JONES HAD HIS BEST VERTICAL JUMP AT 39.5 INCHES ,WHICH WOULD HAVE RANKED HIM AMONG ALL RB'S AT THE COMBINE .... HE HAD EVERY ONE TALKING ABOUT HIM AND HE HAS GENARATED TE MOST BUZZ WHEN HE BLAZED WITH 40 TIMES RANGING FROM 4.25 TO 4.35 SECONDS ACCORDING TO YHOO REPORT .

HE SAID... I PROVED I CAN RUN THAT FAST AND BE THAT EXPLOSIVE .

WOULD RANKED HIM THIRD AMONG ALL RB'S

BuckeyeFin,

Im really not sure how effective a kickoff return guy will be this season. Remember the owners have the new kickoff rule moving kickoffs closer to the opposing goal line. So I expect to see far more touchbacks than ever before.

Hoever, if we can get our hands on a great punt returner that would be a gem. Kickoff returners rarely make great punt returners and punt returners rarely make good kickoff returners.

Thats why no one has been able to unseat Bess as our punt returner even though he's average at best with the duties.

CraigM,

That sounds fair eough.

DB,

Not that I want to keep this thing going but I have to ask....if you believe Stanzi will be the best QB in 3-5 years, something I have no problem believing, by the way, then why would we take Mallett at 15? To me you've got to have the conviction and have the guy you truly believe in. You and I don't see eye to eye on Mallett, but even if he pans out, why also have Stanzi there, when there are other positions that need attention.

Try telling me without losing it on me....thanks.

THANK YOU GRAIG AND FORGET ABOUT TAKING STUFF BACK,YOU WERE BOTH AT FAULT ................PEACE IS GOOD ...FORGIVE AND FORGET ...THANK YOU AGAIN .

Amazing that we can turn things around like that after some very heated debate today DB. If you and I can agree on something, there's hope that the NFL and the NFLPA can get their acts together too....LOL.

loco,

You're making it hard to be humble.

I'm blushing like school girl!

PS: I pan fried some fresh Smelt tonight. Cajun Style. I loved it. Made me feel like Daniel Boone!

odinseye | April 14, 2011 at 10:33 PM

Thanks odin that was funny !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DD,

AFTR IREAD YOUR FIRST POST ABOUT JONES ,I WENT GOOGLE THE GUY AND I CAME ACROSS BREAKING NEWS ON HIM FROM YHOO .

Did'nt the fins already try the KO/Punt Ret once taking Ted(Sideline)Ginn and his Family??

...The one thing that Jones could add is a guy that can run outside of the tackles. We do not have that ability now. In a 2 tight end set, his speed and playmaking ability has to be accounted for. This could help with our deep passing game as safties will have to be at least aware of him. This is something that we sorely lack. It bring the defensive formation closer to the line of scrimmage when he is in the game just because he is a threat.

This will help against cover 2 teams. If we can add a seam threat tight end, it could put our offense in a situation where we have the attacking advantage. Without the speed threat, it is buisness as usual. And the safties do not have to worry about run support as much. Jones doesn't neccesarily have to be that guy. But what other back has his pure speed that may put any amount of fear into an opposing defense?

John Avery seemed to have no heart or smarts at the rb position. If Jones has these two traits as a rb I'll be more than willing to welcome him to Finland.

But just like ALoco, I dont want him here if he going to be spending more time with our doctors than with our coaches. LOL.........

Buckeye,

Long time.

Fanin surprised everybody with his 4.37.

I haven't watched any film on him. From what I read, he's a better pass receiver than a runner.

I don't know how his skills translate in the return game.

I do know that if I had the chance too get a guy at 5-10 230 with 4.37 speed in the 7th round, I'd be hard pressed to not pull the trigger.

On the other hand, there must have been a reason why he was third on the depth chart at Auburn. I have no idea what it was, but he's definitely a VERY interesting prospect!

DD,

Please explain why no trades in the mock ? You said that all those with rediculous drafts would be laughed off. If that`s the case why can`t I make an A/S off myself with the trade down scenario you know I like ?

Stick a Bottle of Jack Daniels on a rope with a stick and draft Odin, He'd gain a Thousand yds by mid-season I bet....

CraigM,

The thing that turned my whole world around about Mallet is when I read he's hands down the best downfield passer of this 2011 qb crew.

Seems to me the greatest weakness of our 2010 passing was downfield passing. Seems his greatest strength perfectly matches our greatest weakness.

Thats what made me do a total 180 from bashing him to being in awe.

PS: You and settling our diffrences could lead to a cba before the draft! LOL..............

AFTER JONES SPOKE TO 12 TEAMS AFTER HIS VERTICAL JUMP TODAY AND WITH HIS ADVISERS HE SAID ... I BELIVE I WILL MAKE AN EXTRAORDNARY JUMP,IT WOULD BE NICE TO BE DRAFTED IN THE FIRST ROUND .

Fin4life....Go ahead and make trades if you want. I was just trying to do a simple straight forward draft with the info that we have as of now. No guarantees that we will make a trade. So I was thinking go with what is so far, set in stone. No worries...I'm sure you will draw up a nice well thought out plan.

ALoco...Whats the news?

fin4life,

We cant do a tradeback scenario in our mocks? I ask because I have a funny feeling someone might pull the trigger on Mallet before #15.

Where the hell is AL Davis when you need him! LOL...........

Cuban,

Ginn costed us a 1st rounder. Up until Jones 4.27 40 he was being projected as a 4th or 5th rounder. BIG difference.

DB,

I thought that new rule of moving up the kick off was still just a proposition. Has it actually been made a new rule?

DD,

NEWS ON JONES ...READ NY POSTS @ 11.44 AND 11;58 PM

DD,

Can I do 2 mock scenarios, one with the tradeback and one without?

I ask because I believe someone's going to shock and maybe take Mallet before #15.

Stick a Bottle of Jack Daniels on a rope with a stick and draft Odin, He'd gain a Thousand yds by mid-season I bet....

Cuban,

Not only THAT! If Aloco's the new priceline negoitiator for the NFLPA and the owners, I'll be his BIG DEAL!!!!

ValHalla!!!!

odinseye,

The rules committee can change 1n-game rules without cba approval. I think when it begans dealing with off the field, drug testing, length of the season and those type issues are the only ones that have to be constituted into a cba.

Im out. You fellas have a gnite.

DD,

I wrote a computer program that gives my estimated weighting for various players, accounts for players that may no longer be available and then spits out 101 possible mocks based on my criteria. I'm certain one will be the most accurate. Can I post all of them?

Guys...Lets just keep it to 1 mock. Try your best. Remember it just for fun. Something to look back on an compaire to the boy genius. Also just to make it easier to read for everyone. If everyone starts doing 2 mocks then it gets to be a lot of logging, and re-posting.

Aloco..Got it.Thanks for the other info.I doubt Jones makes into the first round. Mike Florio did project him as a second round-third round pick.Maybe a knee jerk reaction to his 40 time today. I suppose I'm guilty of this as well.

I think it will be a big mistake changing the kick offs.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

NFL fans live for the long kick off returns.

ARMANDO WAS RIGHT AFTER ALL ABOUT THAT JONES GUY ...HE MAY BE IN PLAY AND WE SHOULD SEND OUR DENTIST TO LOOK AT HIM .

LONG DAY!

I got to get up early, get the kids on the bus and then get busy myself.

Being a single Dad has it's rewards, but DAMN!!!!

I'm out!

ValHalla!!!!

GOOD NIGHT TO ALL ....

I love this kid....He reminds me of a mondern day Mercury Morris!
