Jeff Ireland must have mentioned the fact the Dolphins have only two running backs on the roster at least four times this afternoon during his annual pre-draft presser.
I think that's where they're going, but that's for another time and another post.
Ireland made the point that running backs that are successful long-term in the NFL are not necessarily late-rounders like many so-called experts have been saying. "They're going to be first and second rounders," he said.
Having said that, Ireland said he doesn't feel like he must take a RB. "I don't want to reach for a player to fill a roster spot," he said.
The Dolphins general manager was asked about quarterbacks available to the Dolphins, particularly Ryan Mallett. "I have spent a lot of time with him," Ireland admitted. "We've been very thorough about him much like we are with every player we're considering drafting. Sometimes when there's information out there you want to dispel rumors and get as much information as you can with any player out there. That's why we went through the process. He's a nice young man. Very talented kid. He's got a bright future."
Ireland was not about to shut down any possibility today. He actually said he might be willing to trade up in the same breath he admitted he's "restricted" with eight draft picks but only two in the first three rounds.
Ireland admitted the fact free agency has not happened is a factor for teams, including the Dolphins. He said it will not affect the manner in which teams set and prepare their boards. But it will have an impact on the strategy the teams use on draft day because everyone will be trying to fill needs that perhaps in previous years they had already addressed in free agency.

Armando....Mallett = Instant Gratification.......
Even if he doesn't play for 2 Years......although its more likely he sits out only 1 year......
Just knowing this FO made a BOLD move to upgrade this Offence where it matters most......I feel gratified just thinking about it....

odin,
i think peterson should go #1 even to carolina. he is a game changer in the d backfield and as a return man. on defense he can negate a td from the other team and add a td as a returner. i hope if denver wants to trade down we can work something out for that 3 pick. i think elway is bluffing by bringing in gabbert and newton hoping that those below him will pull the trigger on a trade. if so trading up guarantees peterson and may make a qb desperate team even more desperate if we beat them to the punch and get the that 3 pick before they can. meaning they would trade us even more than they would have denver. see we gotta start thinking like belicheck in order to beat belicheck.

DD, AS I SAID PETER KING NOTICED THAT THE DOLPHINS NEVER SPOKE ABOUT HIM IN THE MEDIA ALTHOUGH HE WENT THROUGH A LOT OF TESTS FOR 2 DAYS IN MIAMI AND NO THER TEAM CAME CLOSE TO DO THESE KIND OF TESTS .

PETRSON ON THE TOP OF THE SF49 DRAFTING BOARD ,THEY NEED A PLAYMAKER .............
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 06:37 PM
Let's see:
With the lockout, rookies will not be able to practice. They will not be able to meet with coaches. They won't even be allowed to have a playbook.
And I'm supposed to get excited about this year's draft??
Wake me in 2012, since their contributions THIS year are likely to be zero.
(sorry for the negativity but it happens to be the truth)

Sorry Darryl,
I got a bottle of whiskey and a cup of coffee sitting right next to me.
I got but grooves in my computer chair and some seriously Red Baggy circles surrounding the lost look in my eyes.
I keep on post after post, checking youtube reels and scouting reports in between.
I don't know why I do this to myself, but I just can't quit. I LOVE it! I know, it sounds like something you'd hear around those NA/AA tables-LOL.
Speaking of which, my Doctor prescribe some Norco 10's for my "Smelt Dipping injury". It ain't Heroin, but it HELPS-LOL!

ODIN,
DO YOU EVER EAT ANY THING LIKE SOUP ????????
IT'S ONLY ABOUT DRINKING .
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 06:41 PM
WHERE THE CUBAN MIDGET ?
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 06:42 PM
Odin, do you have Costco in your area? They have come out with a Small Batch American Whisky, aged 7 years in new, burnt oak barrels. 103 proof
Posted by: redsky | April 21, 2011 at 06:44 PM
Hey Mando,
How do you propose that in the last three years of this regime that they get a C+??? No freaking way!!! They get a D or D-...Ordick last year was a disappointment. Even when he played he looked average at best. Pat White, Henne, Patrick Turner all wasted draft picks...Sean Smith couldn't catch a cold if he were in the hospital during flu season. Jimmy Johnson once said the the meat and potatoes of the draft is in the middle rounds...How have we done with rounds 3-4-5???...We suck again!
Posted by: Flipper13 | April 21, 2011 at 06:46 PM
Aloco, Odin and I have a great recipe for whiskey soup! Put some ice in a bowl, pour your favorite whiskey, use a large spoon or a straw!
Posted by: redsky | April 21, 2011 at 06:48 PM
Odin....Ah. Little yellow bundles of glory.
I have been doing the same. Trying to figure out a reasonable draft scenario. Everything is set except for round 1. I am totaly stumped.
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 21, 2011 at 06:50 PM
take the best player avail at every pick. we have 2 full drafts till we play a game
Posted by: dusty bottoms | April 21, 2011 at 06:50 PM
Actually Aloco,
I have cut back a little on the drinking since I got my two boys moved in.
I've been buying the more expensive stuff lately and sippin it a bit slower. There's a time and place for everything. Then there's priorities as well.
Do you have any idea what it's like trying to help a 6 year old with his homework when your bombed? It doesn't work out too good.
I'm no hypocrite, but I do make some big sacrifices for my Kids sake!

CAN DARRYL SEND ODIN SOUP FROM HIS RESTURANTE WITH SOME FISH AND CHIPS .PLEASE....
YOU KEEP SAYING ODIN IS MY DEAR FRIEND ,SHOW SOME THING TO PROVE IT ....
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 06:52 PM
Flipper 13, although I agree with the content, I must say JJ disappointed as HC of Miami. He did great for the Hurricanes and Dallas, but fell short for the Dolphins!
Posted by: redsky | April 21, 2011 at 06:53 PM
Not even close, ALoco. This is without moving up or down(which Ireland probably will find a way to do it). Let's see, a hint..hmm.a big, bright OT.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 21, 2011 at 06:54 PM
"dullard look in his eye", odin? HAAHA!
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 21, 2011 at 07:01 PM
Green Bay may want to trade up to get the running back they want. Phins will make the conservative choice. That's what they do. It's a conservative organization with a conservative GM and a conservative coach. More fist pumps after yet another field goal is the slogan.
Posted by: sjbytes | April 21, 2011 at 07:10 PM
We have to consider, and I think Ireland said it, that we cannot depend on FA's to fill our holes. So, whatever we choose have to be = or better than any FA we could get for that position and, of course, ready to play. Tough, eh?
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 21, 2011 at 07:15 PM
The demand would be on very coachable, football smart players that could grasp the game quickly.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 21, 2011 at 07:24 PM
1. Kyle Rudolph TE Notre Dame 6-6 259 4.83
2. Luke Stocker TE Tenn. 6-5 258 4.68
3. Lance Kendricks TE Wisc. 6-3 243 4.65
4. Jordan Cameron TE USC. 6-5 254 4.53
I'm not sold on any of the top 3 TE's. All of the seem like slight upgrades to a Fasano type of TE. Big, solid blockers, decent hands, not fast.
Cameron is the least experienced of the group, but I still like him the best. He hasn't established himself as blocker, but he has the size and smarts to learn it. The main reason is, and the thing I like most about, is he was just moved from WR to TE at the begining of last season. Natural pass catcher with elite speed for a guy his size. Will definitely be able to split the seams. The best part of the deal, he'll come at a bargain rate compared to the top 3.
Some have DJ Williams ranked higher, but he'd be my second choice behind Cameron.

ALoco..I would gladly make some soup. But I'm on the road this week.Fishing, Skiing, and preparing for Sundays mock draft. I did have some very good pho from a vietnameese restaraunt for lunch today. Very authentic, with oxtails...
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 21, 2011 at 07:40 PM
Colin Kaepernick could be a pick. He is certainly smart and very coachable. But with that glitch he has, I don't know...
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 21, 2011 at 07:45 PM
Flipper, I feel your pain. But you have to judge this regime with a little less emotion and more logic.
Mando was fairly accurate with his C+ grade. Me? I'd give them a C which if you remember when you went to school was average. And that's exactly what we are: Average.
And average doesn't get you anywhere but at #15 in the draft. No SB and no playoffs. Unless and until this team excells at personnel decisions, that's all we'll ever be.
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 21, 2011 at 07:56 PM
Darryl, skiing? Is it still snowing up north? Alien concept for Floridians. Shorty weather for diving here.
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 21, 2011 at 08:04 PM
It'd probably be possible to tradeback atleast a few spots and pick up another 3rd & 4th Grab Dalton in the later 1st and use the two 3rd rd picks on offensive weapons. Taiwan Jones or Jordan Todman. Then Jordan Cameron or DJ Williams. 4th Greg Salas and Ricky Elmore.
Posted by: beerphin | April 21, 2011 at 08:10 PM
beerphin...we are supposed to get 18 inches tonight. Skiing at Big Sky this weekend. Last weekend, but there will be good skiing into July.
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 21, 2011 at 08:26 PM
@ 8:26 sorry, that was for cocoajoe
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 21, 2011 at 08:27 PM
beerphins,
No offense, but no way in hell does Taiwan Jones make it into the 3rd rd as long as Al Davis has a 2nd rd pick. LOL..........
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 08:31 PM
Almost regurgitated my supper. ESPN commercial with Parcells telling the audience who he would pick in the draft. What a POS....please go back to New Jersey and die.
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 21, 2011 at 08:32 PM
Hell, if AL Davis hadnt hadnt traded away his 2011 #17 pick to the Pats. Ryan Mallet would be a lock to fall no further than #17. LOL.........
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 08:34 PM
Parcells is the like Moses of team builders. He can lead you to the promised land. But it'll take "Joshua" to get you in.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 08:42 PM
I have a strange feeling this will be the draft to end my 40yr run as a Miami Dolphan. I first became a Dolphan in 1971. Just a shame it will have to end this way.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 08:48 PM
Still I'll carry those championship early 70's Dolphins with me everywhere I go.
I'll even leave you guys that title-less Marino and all his hof passing records that are seeming to crumble as quickly as did our SB hopes under him.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 08:51 PM
Dying, I knew we were in trouble when Heizenga hired him. Good coach back in the day but he was elevated to king of all football in Miami. He always wanted total control and hated to be criticized. So, he finally got what he wanted and failed. Too much Jersey. Too much Dallas castoffs. Too much old school.
In the end, we could have done better. Going into season 4 and STILL needing 6 players is failure.
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 21, 2011 at 08:54 PM
After a chaotic offseason soon be followed by a chaotic draft. I feel a huge catastrophic 2011 season slowly copming on.
The early chaotic offseason was the 10.0 earthquake. So you can be pretty sure a catastrophic sunami is sure to follow.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:00 PM
cocoajoe,
I dont trust Ireland either. Im very afraid he'll draft just like some of the idiot opinions I've seen in this blog and it scares me to f*ucking death!
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:02 PM
The sunami is coming!
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:03 PM
Cocoajoe,
Worst of all, Ireland will draft just like some of the warped opinions on this blog. Still they'll be the first calling for he and Sparano's ouster when ground zero occurs in 2010.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:05 PM
I still think the Marshall acquisition was forced upon this fo by Ross. That's why they used him as a $50 million decoy for questionable periods of time.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:08 PM
If I were Ross, I would personally be in the draft war room and choose Mallet 1st rd. Then issue public statement to the fans if he fails place all the blame on me.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:11 PM
Does anyone here remember the '94 season opener against the patriots?
Dan threw his fifth td on a 4th and 5 to win the game...
Classic. Period-
Posted by: GulfDolphin | April 21, 2011 at 09:14 PM
Contrary to popular belief, Ireland had a lot more stroke than people think. Parcells was and is a POS but if you think he split without letting Ireland making some decisions on his own, then you don't know how these things work.
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 21, 2011 at 09:15 PM
We already played it safe in 2008 taking Jake Long over Matt Ryan. Jake Long hasnt scored a single point as of yet. Mark Ingram wont score very many either without cover of more accurate downfield passing.
Then there are those saying draft a defensive player or olineman 1st rd. The primary 2010 problem was inability to score points. Guess we address that by making guys who dont score points a priority! Geesh, LOL...........
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:17 PM
Cocoajoe,
Even though Im not exactly doing cartwheels about Sparano hanging around. Ireland showed he was just as big a pos as Parcells in the way he hung Sparano out to dry.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:19 PM
db,
DID YOU NOTICE HOW IRELAND ENJOYING THIS DRAFT SEASON ? HE'S VERY HAPPY TO IN THE FRONT OF CAMERAS AS IF IT WILL LAST FOR HIM.AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE HE BE GONE .
SPARANO JUST HAPPY TO GET HIS CHECK EVERY WEEK .
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 09:22 PM
Ingram's not a breakway rb, so he wont be doing much scoring without cover of consistent downfield passing attack.
I will love to see how well Ingram moves those chains when defenses consistently have 8 in the run box. Henne's forcing no one out of the run box. So lets draft a pass rusher 1st rd to help us keep our score of 13-6 loses real close.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:24 PM
I AM NOT GOING TO CORRECT EVERY POST,YOU GUYS ARE VERY SMART.YOU ALL CAN TELL WHAT I MEAN WHEN I MAKE A MISTAKE .
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 09:25 PM
During the Marino era it was at times exciting but still disappointing to be a dolphan. The pot-Marino era has just been downright pretty miserable. Still seems no relief in sight.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:26 PM
SMART MAN ALOCO. REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT BEING PAID TO POST HERE. LOL...........
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 21, 2011 at 09:28 PM
THE POT MARINO'S ERA .
Posted by: ALoco | April 21, 2011 at 09:28 PM
No doubt Dying. Funny thing...until this past season, I was in Sparanao's corner. Thinking that once he got some experience and out from under Parcells, he would do good.
I was wrong. Sparano has too much old school, run the ball in him. But Ireland $hit on him big time. Just a way for him to save his job.
But we've all seen that in everyday life, haven't we? Some worm sayin, doing whatever it takes.
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 21, 2011 at 09:28 PM
DB,
LET'S ATTACK SOME ONE >WHO YOU PICK ?
