Has Brandon Marshall been worth it so far?

It's simple and unsavory. The Dolphins are outnumbered in the number of draft picks they'll bring to the NFL draft in a little more than two weeks.

That is not up for debate.

This is: The Dolphins have fewer picks than other AFC East rivals because they made the football decision to invest their second round pick -- along with another second rounder last year -- on wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

So has Marshall been worth the price so far?

Simple question, really. Knowing what you know today, would you give up those two draft picks for Marshall today?

Marshall had a good-news, bad-news season with the Dolphins in 2010.

The good news is he caught 86 passes for 1,014 yards in his first season with the Dolphins. That led the team and was the team's most impressive season by a receiver in the Parcells-Ireland-Sparano years. Marshall was a legitimate threat to opposing defenses and often the only receiver that was double-covered by defenses.

But there is bad news, too. Marshall scored only three TDs, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2006. He played 14 games because he was injured for two others. He struggled with his hands, leading the team in dropped passes. He had a couple of on-field difficulties, including a poorly timed unsportsmanlike penalty for throwing the football at former teammate Jay Cutler in the Chicago game. He ran wrong routes more than any other Miami receiver.

And he and quarterback Chad Henne were rarely on the same page. I'm not blaming Marshall for this one. Chemistry is a two-way street. So it is up to bothhe and Henne to get their act together. Marshall talked at the end of the season how he enjoyed a better chemistry with backup Tyler Thigpen.

I hope Marshall uses his first season with the Dolphins as a launch point to better things. But what if he doesn't? We don't know. We can only judge what has actually happened.

So would you rather have those second-round picks or the player at this point?

Not yet, but he likely will be!

Armando,

Please tell us you're focking kidding?

There is no way Dophin managmeent could have drafted a player of Marshall's calibur in the second round. Even if they drafted two WRs. It was definitely worth the trade. Marshall is a top 5 WR without a doubt.

This is one "play maker" that is under contract. Thank God!

sorry for the typos.

Marshall missed 2 games and still had over 1,000 recieving yards. It isnt his fault he was so grossly misused. Jerry Rice would only have 3tds with Henne's lack of confidence and inconsistency throwing downfield combined with the coaching lack of confidence in Henne to consistenly allow him too.

Armando, are you kidding me? We havent had a 1,000yd wr in 10 seasons or more. ROTFLMAO! LOL...........

If Dan Marino had Marshall, Brandon would have about 1,800yds recieving and 20 plus td's a season. LOL...........

THIS POST ABOUT OVERPAID PLAYER WHO DIDN'T DO ANY THING SO FAR FOR HIS 50 MILLION,25 OF IT GUARANTEED ................... ONE THING HE DID WELL,ACT LIKE MR BACALA AND SHOWED NO SUPPORT FOR HIS TEAM MATES .........................

Its also been very rare as of late, that we have a guy throw hissy fits because we are losing. I rather have a guy who visibly shows disdain for losing than guys who seem its ok with them.

Ferg...Great point. Draft picks are overvalued by teams. Marshall is a top tier reciever.Go back and look at the second round last year and there is nobody of Marshalls quality.

Armando,

Very legit question about B.Marshall, I really believe he broke off alot of routes in frustration looking to make something happen in our very stagnant O. I saw to much of him on Sportscenter his 1st. few years in the league to think he isn`t worth it, although the drops a theme from Training Camp thru the Season with him did raise some concern. I would like to think he was trying to hard to live up to that fat contract and lacked proper focus when it got into his head. I expect bigger things from him this Season and will reserve judgment until later. I don`t think you can knock trading 2 picks in rd.2 for arguably one of the more formidable players at the position in the middle of his prime.

HAKEEM THE WR OF THE GAINTS HAD LESS THAN A 1000 YARDS BUT HAD 13 TD'S .................... HE WAY BETTER THAN MARSHALL WITH 2,3 MILLION A YEAR ....WE OVERPAID MARSHALL .........

ALoco,

The onus was on the coaching staff for using him as a $50 million decoy. That isnt Marshall's fault. He didnt throw anyone under the bus, he stated Henne was afraid to throw the ball up and let him fight for it. That was a true statement. LOL...........

I agree w/ you Armando, Henne SUCKS! LOL

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

ALoco,

Guarantee you had Marshall gone to the Giants(Eli Manning) he would have had 10 or more td's too. LOL........

Marshall comes to Miami and its the 1st season he doesnt make pro bowl. Things that make you go, hmmmmm................

Okay let me get this straight. Not only do we have to deal with annoying pop ups (I actually just had one come up that I couldn't close even after the commercial was over which forced me to reopen the page just so I could read the article) but we are also getting censored when we question your articles that butt kiss the Patriots? Didn't swear, nothing offensive, just questioned your thought process and motives behind it. And it gets pulled?! I guess people can talk about anything they want as long as they don't question or talk about the writers? This blog and paper is turning into some kind of communist dictatorship.

DB @11:09

That is the truest and most fact based statement I`ve seen so far on Marshall, so DITTO !!!!!!

Marshall's unquestionably seen as a top 3 nfl wr until he arrives here. This blog is a joke. ROTFLMAO! LOL....................

ROUMOR......... EDWARDS THE WR OF THE JETS IS GOING TO PHI WHILE WE R GOING TO DISNEY ..

"Kaspersky Small Office Security is an easy and complete way to secure small offices with premium Internet and data protection, central security management for PCs and servers, and the tools to keep employees safe and productive.

Free 60-day Trial"

Dont miss out everyone! This is the pop up that came up. I signed out because it wouldn't go away after the commercial was done and was lying right over the article. I came back to read it and the pop up came up and did the same thing!! Funny thing is my pop up blocker is turned on!!!! So I guess I won't be able to read the article. Oh well, The Sentinel will have some good stuff as usual.

FACT.............

MARSHALL WAS ON THE TOP 3 PLAYERS RE ,DROPPING BALLS .

FACT........... EDWARDSOF THE JETS AT 1.8 MILLION HAD 14 TD'S WHILE MARSHALL HAD 2 .

We could get a high 1st rd'er for Marshall right now today. Because most teams realize we had absolutely no clue how to use him in 2010! LOL......................

The Dolphins did what they set out to do, get a #1 receiver. They didn't have to give up a 1st round pick to do it, and there is no talk to draft a WR high in the rounds this year like they had previously done in the previous ten years. They were able to draft down last year and get some extra picks. I expect them to do the same this year. If Odrick is a starter in 2011 then that move will have paid off.

PHINS 78,

THE POP UP IS GONE DUE TO SO MANY COMPLAINS .

ALoco,

We can read these facts however we wish. Fact, Sanchez had 17tds, 2 more than Henne. At least the Jet coaching staff didnt use Edwards as a "decoy" or Sanchez has no one else to throw td passes too. LOL................

I AM DREAMING........... NEXT TIME HENNE THROW A BALL TO MARSHALL ,HE MUST RUN TO HIM AND HOLD HIS HANDS SO HE DOESN'T DROP THE BALL .........

Had our OC used Marshall inside the red zone, his TD production would of been a ton more.

We got the first second round pick back from San Diego and used that to get Koa Misi, who is looking to be a fine player. So if you are asking me if I am happy with Brandon Marshall and Koa Misi for what basically is a trade for a 2nd round pick.

The answer is yes...I think it was absolutely worth it.

FACT.... FOOTBALL IS A TEAM SPORT,TEAM EFFORT,TEAM WORK.... ALL THINGS MARSHALL HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT,WITH DENVER HE DIDN'T GO TO ONE PLAYOFF GAME ............

And in all of this talk about how many draft picks the Patriots have I think one important thing is being overlooked. You can add three draft picks to our number this year considering, AJ Edds, Jared Odrick, and Sheets, will be returning this season. We never got a chance to see these guys play and they are all basically rookies this season when it comes down to it. The only difference is they will be up to speed quicker than a normal rookie because they have had time to get used to the Dolphins play books and everything else. Meaning these guys will contribute heavily with the other draftees we pick. And is there someone saying that whomever the Pats pick will be better than these three guys? I hope not because it would be BS. You don't know that and won't until the end of the season possibly a couple of years down the road to be honest. The Pats better hope old man river and his bad knee stay healthy all season or else it will be back to mediocreville for Armandos Patriots.

Since we recovered a 2nd rd pick in 2010. Isnt the real value of Marshall a single 2nd rd'er overall?

If we're able to trade down this year, it would be the same value as getting Marshall in free agency. Both of the picks used on him would have been fully recovered.

Actually last season, the 2nd rd pick was higher than the pick traded for Marshall. That's already raised value of one of the 2nd rd picks. If we recover this year's 2nd rd pick and its the 14th position of the 2nd rd or less. Again its a "raised value" 2nd rd pick.

So then the total cost of Marshall would be like getting him in fa(both 2nd rd picks recovered) plus raising the original values of both 2nd rd picks.

You Tell Me If He's Worth It Armando. LOL...........

D,

Not only did we recover a 2nd rd pick last season. We recovered it with interest. It was a much higher 2nd rd pick than the one we traded away. LOL...........

DB,

Another solid point at 11:34, your on fire !!

D,

Ditto on your point as well !!

I doubt we would even be having this conversation if Bones Odrick wasn`t such a question mark.

this is sparano and irelands 4th year in miami so the "on the job training" is over! training wheels come off but questions remain; can these two show finally they are up to the task at hand??????? we have been so excited up to the draft, then a major deflated feeling afterwards watching ireland reach for mediocre caliber players while passing on consensus picks. no one had pat white going so early nor pat turner or even john jerry,a pedestrian RG with no position flexibility picked 2 rounds early. how about passing dez and the free safety earl thomas going to seattle so we could draft a guy with a broken leg at a position we didnt need? its gotta make u wonder!

phins78,

Totally agree Armando's Patsy post was total bs. Hell the way Armando feels, Goodell may as well hand Belichik the Lombardi now and just let everyone else play for 2nd place.

The patsy pick situation is what it is. It guarantees squat. They still have to play the game! Hope no one here thinks Armando would have thier backs in a dark alley fight. LOL...........

It is amazing to me how all year long everyone blames Brandon Marshall for this or that. All the games I have seen was that Either Marshall was Double or Tripple teamed, or Henne did not want to throw to Marshall. Henne is the type of quaterback that will not servey the field and will check down, and if you notice, Henne, checked down the whole season, More than often, I saw Marshall open alot of times down the line or the end zone and Henne just refused to notice. WE need a quaterback that will notice the whole field and NOT WATCH the reciever he wants to throw to from the snap. Marshall is worth the picks that we gave up for him, JUST GET A QUATERBACK THAT WILL THROW TO MARSHALL AND TAKE CHANCES. 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 MARSHALL WITH A PERFECTLY THROWN BALL WILL COME DOWN WITH IT, CORNER CAN OUT JUMP OR MUSCLE HIM FOR THE BALL.

sorry, there was typo's, There is not a corner that can out jump or out muscle Marshall for the ball.

SFC....... FACT.............HENNE THROW THE BALL TO MARSHALL HE DROPPED IT 34 TIMES DURING THE SEASON ................

...It is a foolish argument to make if you think that the Marshall trade was a bad one. We get one of the elite recievers in the game. For unproven comodities. I'll take that everyday. If you don't like Marshall as a player, that is fine. But if you cannot deny his skill or playmaking ability.

There was one example of how Marshall should be used. Go back to the first jet game. I know we lost. But the jets could not cover him, and they had to back off from the 8 man fronts they tried to use in half one. Because Henne was accurate, and was able to find Marshall on short, and medium routes all night. They had to double cover him, so eventually they could not pile people inside the run box.

This is how a player like Marshall can effect a game. He helps the run game, he helps the other recievers by taking double teams. This is where scheme, and the concept of team football comes into play. And this is where the Dolphins failed last year. It takes a competant quarterback, and play caller to utilize Marshalls strengths. It wasn't Marshalls fault he would go quarters without any targets. It wasn't Marshalls fault our quarterback couldn't throw a fade, or was scared to "throw Marshall open"

Yes Marshall had some untimely drops, and some bonehead penalties. These are unexcusable. But there is no way one of the top 5 recievers in the game just forgot how to be dominant because he put on a different uniform. We aquired Marshall to be a game changer. Time to take advantage.

I cant even believe we're having the conversation, a wr even the critics unaminously believed was a top 3 nfl reciever prior to coming here and giving up two 2nd r'ers for him. Is a questinable call.

Armando, Im trying to figure out if this blog or your Belichik article is the biggest laugher! LOL.................

greg z,

I agree some real head scratchers with these guys and isn`t it funny to boot that now it seems none of them were reponsible, if were to believe Parcells that it was a Pat White fever in the personnel dept. that lead to the blown pick. Talk about passing the buck Bill, at the end of the day who ran the Personnel dept. ? I think that Ireland understands the need to not reach in this draft and go with the consensus players because if he doesn`t and his picks miss, it will be all that he can do to leave Miami as quickly as possible before the fit hits the chan ! (if you get my meaning)

So far I believe he has been worth it - I can only imagine what draft pick we would have without marshalls help last year. As long as he keeps his wits about him I'd rather have hime than not.

No not with his cry baby antics with Henne at the end of the season, unsportmans like conduct plus the numbers of balls he dropped last season. Some of those drops were crucial to winning a couple of those games and at the end of the season Marshall took it upon himself to sour the entire phins additude against New England and basically a few games before that. I truly believe that we would have been better off keep Greg Camarillo last season and gambled that 2nd round pick on another rookie reciever.
As good as he was suppose to be he was also just as bad in other areas which is not what you buy with that much money and 2 draft picks.

DD @11:48,

Great example (1st. Jets game) and great post, I get the feeling were all on the same page here !

completely regret the trade now and I wanted him badly last year. Malcontent who will only bring your team down. he doesn't even need to bat balls down in practice like he did in Denver cause he cant catch s**t here!!!

Armando,

A very timely and poignant question this morning....has Brandon Marshall been worth it so far? I don't get why guys are jumping all over you this morning about this....it's a BLOG guys....we're all allowed to talk out loud.....no right or wrong answers...only opinions.

For me, that's a two part question. Has he been worth it SO FAR? To me that's an easy one. No, he hasn't been worth it so far. We brought this guy in to be our number one receiver and our record didn't improve one bit from the year before. We brought him in, gave up two second round picks for him, paid him $50 million and no improvement in our record. That says NOT WORTH IT. Having said that, I don't blame him for the fact our record didn't improve. I think he's a gamer and I think for the most part he tried hard.

No the second part of that, would I make the trade again? I would. I think the best part of Marshall's time with the Dolphins is still to come. If we hadn't traded for him I still think we'd have a need for a number one receiver. I think if he keeps his head on straight and his mouth shut that Marshall will become a perennial Pro Bowler with Henne ir whoever is playing QB for this team. Good question though.....

Anthony, that's all well and good but it is well reported that Marshall was the worst route runner out of all of our receivers. He missed routes all of the time. I'm just saying if you want Marshall to be the poster boy for a great Miami receiver he better start acting like one and studying harder. How many routes did Jerry Rice or Marvin Harrison blow off? If you want to be one of the best you have to work like one of the best. Maybe less time flapping his lips and more time concentrating on bettering his game. Or does he already think he's good enough so there's no9 need to improve the mental part of his game? That's what it seems like he believes some times. At least that's the perception, fair or not it's out there.

...If mediocre was 11-5 and missing the playoffs with our second string quarterback who hadn't started a game since high school. That is the high standard for medicoraty.

There are a ton of reasonsto hate on the Pats. One is division envy. They always seem to get the breaks, There may be no Brady dynasty if not for the tuck rule. I get it. But as a blueprint on how to run a franchise, and a draft. Their success cannot be argued since Belicheck arrived. They hold all of the cards in this draft. The Pats have the ability to take ANY player in this draft they want. Since it is notpart of their make-up they most likely will avoid moving up. But who knows. I have made the point they have too many picks!

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YS EYS YES YES YS YES YES YES

THAT'S THE ANSWER NOW LET ME READ.

I believe if we hadn't of traded for Marshall we would have drafted Dez Bryant last year. Guyw will disagree with that comment but the bottom line is we needed a number one receiver. At this time last year this was our biggest need. So maybe another question might be, with everything we know today would you rather have given up the two picks to get Marshall or have drafted Dez Bryant. Because of the injury history and the problems we are seeing with Bryant off the field I'd rather have done the Marshall trade. More of a sure thing....less of an unknown.

ALoco.

From National Post stat.com:

Marshall was targeted 145 times caught 59.3% of passes with 39.3% of those passes being for 1st downs.

BTW, quick snatching stats out of your a^ss. He didnt have 37 drops. Marshall had only 11 drops in 2010 or he dropped the ball only 7% of the 145 times he was targeted. LOL......

http://nationalpost.stats.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=7868

BM is a great WR, and yes two 2nd rounders is totally worth it. You have to also remember that we had a concrete statue at QB last year...it isn't all BM's fault. Any doubters will be silenced when we actually have a QB that can get him the ball...

fin4life, just to add to that Parcells point about passing the buck. I used to love the guy but lately I see what a putz he actually is. he makes that statementnt about the Pat White pick without realizing himself the massive influence he has over everyone who works under him while also ignoring the fact they are scared to question his judgment for fear of the Parcells wrath coming down on them with full force. Meaning when he says "we abandoned or principles" he should really be saying 'I abandoned my principles' because correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Parcells role over Sparano and Ireland layed out as "teacher". Weren't we tole he picked these guys because they were loyal to him and he could show them the ways of coaching and drafting before he left? HE WAS RUNNING THE SHOW!!!! And that's what pizzes me off so much. Just say, "I made a mistake"! Not we as if they had any kind of final say on the pick. As a matter of fact I've heard it from more than one source that Irleand wanted no part of Pat White, was against it from the beginning! Freakin Parcells

"our principles"

I think that calling out B.Marshall`s attitude last Season can be a bit hypochritical, no ? Think about it, his Q.B. wouldn`t look for him downfield. I remember vs. Baltimore there were replays that showed him clearly behind the entire D on certain plays early. Henne basically ignored him and thats just calling Henne out on that game.

You couple that with vanilla formations that the D was jumping the routes on and calling out at the line of scrimmage and it must have been very frustrating to say the least. I read were somebody put up a few days ago that all the talk about teams reading our formations and jumping the routes were a B.S. excuse and that they`re really not to different from the routes we`ve been running for years with greater success and to that person I say what games were you watching because sitting in my living room last season I new what was coming about 75% of the time based on the formation and can`t believe I was alone, it was frustrating to me and I was watching. I can only imagine if I were playing, I would have been questioning everything !!!

Gosh I wonder what he would have done with a good qb? Silly question to ask if we'd still give away two no. 2's.
Get Mallet and this question never arises again.
