Has Brandon Marshall been worth it so far?

It's simple and unsavory. The Dolphins are outnumbered in the number of draft picks they'll bring to the NFL draft in a little more than two weeks.

That is not up for debate.

This is: The Dolphins have fewer picks than other AFC East rivals because they made the football decision to invest their second round pick -- along with another second rounder last year -- on wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

So has Marshall been worth the price so far?

Simple question, really. Knowing what you know today, would you give up those two draft picks for Marshall today?

Marshall had a good-news, bad-news season with the Dolphins in 2010.

The good news is he caught 86 passes for 1,014 yards in his first season with the Dolphins. That led the team and was the team's most impressive season by a receiver in the Parcells-Ireland-Sparano years. Marshall was a legitimate threat to opposing defenses and often the only receiver that was double-covered by defenses.

But there is bad news, too. Marshall scored only three TDs, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2006. He played 14 games because he was injured for two others. He struggled with his hands, leading the team in dropped passes. He had a couple of on-field difficulties, including a poorly timed unsportsmanlike penalty for throwing the football at former teammate Jay Cutler in the Chicago game. He ran wrong routes more than any other Miami receiver.

And he and quarterback Chad Henne were rarely on the same page. I'm not blaming Marshall for this one. Chemistry is a two-way street. So it is up to bothhe and Henne to get their act together. Marshall talked at the end of the season how he enjoyed a better chemistry with backup Tyler Thigpen.

I hope Marshall uses his first season with the Dolphins as a launch point to better things. But what if he doesn't? We don't know. We can only judge what has actually happened.

So would you rather have those second-round picks or the player at this point?

fin4life,

Outstanding post regarding Huizenga, and I say that not being a fan of the man at ALL.

I believe you a correct, though, that much of the animosity towards him stemmed from things that had nothing at all to do with the Dolphins, such as dismantling the Marlins first championship squad. I shared that anger, too, but he never made any such moves as Dolphins owner.

You are also correct that he spent heavily and TRIED to give the fans what they wanted. People may remember JJ with anger today but to not remember that it was an EXTREMELY popular move at the time among the fanbase would be an alternate version of reality.

Hated Huizenga as Marlins owner, never cared for his right-wing politics or some of his slimy business practices with Waste Management, but I can't visit those animosities on his tenure owning the Dolphins. The failure to produce a champion rested elsewhere. Wayne provided the tools to succeed.

fin4 @ 3:02. Good post, fair perspective.

As well, it highlights a reason why team owners really need to understand the business of pro football. You can't just blindly hire the hot name of the day based on the media, its not that simple.

Its the same exact problem TS has with his coordinators, he just blindly follows their lead, letting them endlessly implement failing strategies (ST coordinator, Pasquali, Henning), because he himself just doesn't know any better. He lucked out with Nolan, banking on luck though is ultimately not a viable plan.

Killerfin,

Its been widely reported Rexy Jetsy has shown huge interest in Randy Moss this offseason. Its also been hugely reported Moss' feelings for the Jets are mutual.

We dont have a snowball's chance in hell of Moss now becoming a Dolphin. I say good riddance even if chance it could happen! LOL...........

ox80........ that was a very good post @ 3;14 .it's true ....next year i believe will be different .

Gary, you are really off base. The Islanders attendance increased this year. They are also dynamically in the hardest location to get attendance on a week day. (Which could justify the move you talk about) There really is only one bridge in and one bridge out for the most part and always jammed for rush hour. But the Islanders do have way to much history to move, and if they did move it would only be to Brooklyn. The nhl can not lose the NY rivalry at all. Sorry needed to chime in on the isles.

DyingBreed,

I never said we should have kept Ginn, In Fact I was all for trading him. What I was trying to get across was this.. Marshall is a very talented wr.. But in no way is the guy explosive, lets look at what he brings to the table a tall red zone threat that can outleap most db's in the nfl a decent but not great route runner, a reliable blocker in the run game, great hands, and the ability to create yards after the catch.

The one thing that IMO a prototype #1 wr should have is Speed which Marshall does not have he is in no way a deep threat he relies on making the short to meduim range catches and running over any defender in his way. He is very much the same as a reciever we once had David Boston.. the problem with those guys is they wear down after 6-7 seasons and pile up injury.

I think we should have kept our wr's that we had at the time except of course Turner and Ginn maybe even Cam like we did and went with Bess, Hartline, and the two rookies and maybe even drafting one in the 2nd or 3rd Williams the bucs got in the 3rd I was stunned Miami didn't draft in the 3rd. Even then what I'm saying is had we had that pick this year we could've gotton Young or Baldwin and both have alot of things you look for in #1 wr the only knock on them is with Young he played for Boise and the compitition he faced wasn't great and with Baldwin it's the prima donna attitude and they bring speed to the position, what is the point in having a QB with a cannon for an arm if he has no one that can burn a defense deep??

for what Marshall does I think Bess does just as well except the leaping ability IMO Bess is a better route runner actually the best in the nfl hands down and has amazing hands. I think Bess could just as easily given the oppertunity put up better numbers than Marshall as our #1 and Bess had the better stats last year to prove it YPC, TD's wise and almost caught as many balls as Marshall

Anyway I don't think Marshall will be complaining about Henne this season cause Miami is going to draft Mallett #15

vaustn, you use all thes caps to your point and it did not make a ton of sense. Henne regressed slightly last year, the team in general regressed, and the O-line had to many injuries to over come to be effective. Non-effective o-line=non effective QB. and our play calling was attrocious. Sorry, but you just can not blame as much as you want to on Henne yet.

Just saw on Espn Mel Kiper now has NT Corey Liuget rated 5th amongst NT's on his draft board. Dolphins gave him a looksee for the draft.

Could be draft insurance against Soliai regressing. Shows an attempt to cover thier bases.

I am come from Costa Rica for one game in 2011. How is the travel on the Metro to the Dolphin game? There is station at stadium like Miami Heat game?

Maybe Mallet, maybe one of the others. The point is, none of the QB's available, whether a FA vet(because of the CBA) or a rookie, none will have much of a chance to help this year.

If Armando wants to compare anyone to Gen. Custer, it should be Henne. It's Henne's last stand. Push done come to shove!

Everybody agrees our run game suffered because a lack of consistent passing. Especially the deep ball game.

It seems to me Bess came up Mr. Clutch because of the attention paid to Marshall. Well then the answer is get somebody to legitimately take the attention away from Marshall. A serious speed demon, THAT CAN ACTUALLY CATCH would give opposing defenses the old pick your poison cliche.

The seam stretching TE puts us over the top. Double Marshall and we'll beat you deep, down the seam or underneath with Mr. 3rd down Davone Bess.

Leave Marshall alone one on one and we win that battle more times than not.

Find a speed demon, a seam stretcher and that not only opens up our pass game, it cures MOST of what's wrong with our run game.

With the weak QB class, and no CBA, Henne most likely wins the starting job by DEFAULT AGAIN.

It ain't a pretty picture but it is what IT IS! With our 2nd rounder already spent and all the holes we need to fill, we have to take the path of least resistance, THIS YEAR anyways.

Therefor, I see our two most pressing needs as the speed demon WR and the pass catching TE.

Resign Ricky for a year and draft a complimentary back in Kendall Hunter or Taiwan Jones. Draft a right tackle later, get another one in FA and ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep looking for the next Brady in a later round. At least for this year.

Finish solidifying the receiving corp and I think the run game returns to form ALMOST automatically. THEN, the rest depends on Henne. Like it or not, he's going to be the guy this year anyway, might as well take away ALL the excuses and FINALLY find out what we really got.

Sorry Aloco, maybe I should have started this post with "Four score and seven years ago....."

Don't blame Marshall when it was the coaches playing for field goals once we got inside the 25 yard line.

Dying...Auburn had a sorry defense. They were the 8th rated defense in the SEC. A league that had only 4 teams in the top 50 in total defense(2 in the top ten)The idea that the SEC was a dominant defensive league last year was a myth. In fact Mallets Arkansas team had a better all around defense then Cam Newtons Auburn team. Arkansas was the 4th team in the top 50 47th @ 22.8 ppg. Auburn. 24.5 pts a game. It was Auburns rush defense that kept them from the bottom of the league. Their pass defense(like all the other SEC teams last year with the exception of Alabama, Florida, LSU) was putrid.

Ernesto, Metrorail does not stop at the Dolphins stadium. The closest would be to transfer from Metrorail to Tri-Rail and exit at Golden Glades, where there are shuttle buses to games.

Metrorail is supposed to expand with a line up to the stadium but that is years away and won't help you in 2011. You may find it easier to just rent a car and park.

Thank you. Tri Rail is another Metro? I have never see this in Miami.

Brian R,

Bess had his best year as a Pro. Hmmmmm, I wonder why?

You think it had anything to do with Marshall drawing all the coverages?

Marshall and Bess compliment each other beautifully. However, lacking a true, legitimate Burner(NOT a Ted Ginn), it's all for naught.

Get us that true no. 1 burner and Marshall's a beast again. Bess? With two other legitimate WR's on the field, Bess makes everyone finally forget about Welker.

I can't read the stinkin' article because I can't close the BS Cup of Coffee taking up a quarter of my screen.....

but in short.....can't see the headline either....

Marshall is more than worth it.....now find a staff and QB worthy of HIM!

No he hasn't been worth it so far PERIOD

Ernesto, Tri-Rail is a commuter rail that travels between West Palm Beach and Miami. It connects with Metrorail at the Northside/79th Street station but will soon connect at the new Metrorail extension to MIA.

Unlike Heat games, you will find using the Metro impractical for Dolphins games, although not impossible. It will involve two transfers, though. Good luck!

marshall is LIKE CHEAP COFFEE ,GOOD ONLY THE FIRST TIME YOU DRINK IT .

The POP UP is still THERE! who cares about this shmucks B DAY! Guess ill go to ESPN or SI for my dolphin news....

Thank you 954ver! I will like to go on the Tri Rail that I never see before. This can take one many places of the geographia!

I just sat and watched the Dolphins/Pittsburgh game from last year on NFL Channel while uncrating and logging in some new Rifles this afternoon. I believe Armando would do well to go back and watch that game (hell, I think the whole fans base would) Brandon Marshall had some GREAT (not good, GREAT) catches in that football game. As did Brian Hartline, which had he not have coughed up the ball on that Hideously ill timed "Damn Henning Disaster" quick “out pass” would have had a fantastic Game. Devon Bess was a monster also. And, even as it pains me to say... Chad Henne did have some good moments in that game and had he had better play calling and a bit less cash pay off to the ref’s we would have CERTAINLY won that game.

I say all that shiznit to say this. Was Marshall worth it? Your damned right he was. We had no clue Bess would develop as he has and Bess cannot do what Marshall does. Marshall came off a hip scope that most certainly slowed his launch and capped his explosiveness (something he says he has been working very hard on this off-season) Brandon Marshall is a true "Alpha level receiver"... only those who feel Miami is incapable of having good players (and trust me they exist) would doubt it. I was adamant about not wanting Marshall and was in the minority... and I can sit here and say "I was wrong" I did back then also. Marshall is a proven player... and for all the "Names" we hear coming out in the draft... NONE have played a down and proven a damned thing. Marshall has to the entire league and us in a BIG way... Those guys calling that game I watched could not shut up saying and talking about how great he was. I tell ya, I’m beginning to think Armando and our fan base is losing it asking question like “Was Marshall worth it” when all we talked about for 2 years was needing a Alpha receiver in Miami.

But real quick like.... going back to the game I watched against Pittsburgh. They were healthy (Pitt)... not beat up and Miami played then strong. They had the receiver (name eludes me) whop burned Jason Allen with speed twice (I believe that game was the end of J. Allen?) Miami, guys, is no POS team. I have gone back without the emotion or nerves I had during the season and watched about 6 of their games over as many as 2 and 3 times for perspective. If you have never done that, if all you have is the bad memory of a crappy day... go do a retake for yourself. I saw 5 games last year where Miami truly screwed the pooch. Twice against NE, against the Bears, against Baltimore. And in1 of 2 Jest games. Every other game Miami was 1 possession or 1 good play from winning.

I still believe should the right system and QB fall to us... we are going to be just fine and get better as time progresses. I really do believe that. As for Henne; I was left feeling he has something to offer Miami after watching him play today. He just needs to use a tool that is long enough to pull his head out of his ass and find it!

Talk to you guys later on....

THE POP UP IS ONLY ON THE CHEAP COMPUTERS NOT ON APLLE .

KRIS,,, GET READY OF YOUR CHEAP COMPUTER AND BUY A NEW APPLE ,YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY .

Aloco....I only buy Apple products.....Windows are for suckers.....

Definitely worth the two 2nd round picks used to get him. With a quarterback that can get him the ball on time and in the right spots he's as good as there is. This video of him when he had competent quarterbacking always gets me fired up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgEYUZaUItk&feature=player_detailpage

Mark in Toronto....The PERIOD bomb....already???

Can we get a side order of substance with that Period stew?

Popups have absolutely NOTHING to do with the age or expense of a computer. That's like saying potholes only affect cheap cars, not Jaguars or Bentley's.

You CAN avoid some by having a good popup blocker (which can be added to any system) but it has nothing to do with how old your computer is. This Aloco character knows as much about computers as he does about spelling.

Cameron assembled a 1-15 roster. Completely putrid!

Take away the Wildfluke season and we are what our record says we are. Back to Back 7-9 seasons.

A lot of Dolphin fans(me included)speak as if we just came off of back to back Super Bowl seasons.

Wildfluke aside, we're a back to back 7-9 team. Up until Nolan got on board we didn't have much of a defense either.

Henne, Marshall and Bess have hardly had what I would call a supporting cast. if you don't believe me, just take a look at the situations Flacco, Ryan and Sanchez stepped into.

The foundations been laid, it's time to put some icing on this cake with some serious Offensive playmakers.

Get me a speed demon WR and a pass catching TE!

MVP,

APPLE PRODUCTS,WHEN YOU BUY THEM ,THEY DO HAVE THAT BLOCKER ALREADY INSTALLED NOT LIKE YOUR CHEAP COMPUTER YOU OWN DONKEY .

There isn't a computer on the market that doesn't have security suites (including popup blockers) already installed, nitwit. Some people just fail to activate them or don't know how.

And I DO own an Apple, Einstein. Stick to things you actually know something about, like scrubbing dishes or boiling water.

THE MEANING OF CHEAP COMPUTER;;;;;;;

ONCE YOU BUY IT,YOU HAVE TO BUY 100 THING FOR IT TO WORK AND IT START TO CRASH FROM THE AMOUNT OF CRAP YOU ADDED TO IT .

MVP,

SCRUBBING DISHES OR BOILING WATER, WHAT THAT MEANS DONKEY ?

Thank you for that Derek, just be careful on this blog... I brought up the same point but to support Henne on a replay of the GB game i watched last week. Now, it is true that GB's defense was in shambles due to injuries. But in that game, due to injuries, the O-line was able to give Henne time. And you know what heppened when Henne had consistant time. he looked like a pro-bowl QB. by the way, Marshall had like 9 catches in that game, BUT DID blow a beautiful TD pass by forgetting to Tap his feat in the back of the end zone.

I agree Marshall was worth it, partially because our FO would have probably drafted crap on a stick with thos picks... At least we got someone the D had to cover well.

But Marshall needs to not drop the ball so much.

"What that means?" Who taught you how to construct a coherent sentence, Tonto?

IN THE OLD DAY POOR PEOPLE BOILED WATER FOR THEIR KIDS UNTIL THEY GO TO SLEEP THINKING THEY R COOKING SOME THING WHEN THEY R NOT ...IS THAT WHAT YOU MEAN DONKEY ?

Odin....Cam Cameron had 1 draft...he didn't wreck this ship by himself.....

The Raven's built thu D.....and by all reports Ozzie takes the best player on the board....They were SMART enough to take a QB when he fell to them....I wonder if we will be if Mallett or Newton is sitting there at 15.....

The Ryan team already had a QB.....and because they WERE set at that postion for the past 7 years...it gave them the luxery to solidify the rest of the team and build a Contender.....

To be honest...I can't really talk jets football...I have spent most of my life denying they even exist...but after 2 AFC Championship games....I will be paying closer attention.....

The one thing I will say....they (jets) have been aggressive in FA and the draft....every time they have moved up to grab somebody....it seems to pay off.....

Seems like a way better move than to MOVE BACK....and get lesser talent.....but WE FIN fans seem to LOVE that techninque.....no matter how many times it bites us in the ass....

PREACH IT ODIN!!!!! We will change this blog one by one!!! :)

We have a winning foundation here... well minus any RB's. We just need above average coaching!! Is that to much to ask? Well, and good line play... :)

Start drinking this kool-aid, it feels good to belive we alrady have players that equal a winner, and i do believe that!

Him and Cam WAKE!!!!!!!!!they both had awesome years and i tell you this too!Keep em' cause i ain't the only one who see em' play! do your research its worth it!!!!!!

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered but I just got here.

"He ran wrong routes more than any other Miami receiver."

This is the first time I have read this anywhere. Where did this information come from?

You're asking OTHER people what they mean after saying people in the "old day" boiled water for their kids for bo apparent reason?

What in the hell are YOU talking about, you parakeet?

Home In Da House

Was Marshall worth it? Quit trying to stir the pot Armando and get your head in the game!

The title of this blog should have read: "Is Julio Jones worth it?"

If Julio Jones was available at 10, I would try to trade up and get him.

I would give this years 1st, 6th, and 7th and nexts years 3rd as a conditional. If Jones catches 75+ or gains 1000 yards it becomes a 2nd.

If you were sitting at 10 would you take this years 1st, 6th, and 7th and next years conditional 3rd?

we did overpay for marshall after we got him, but I think the draft picks were worth it. But I would rather given a 1st round pick and kept our two number 2.

How thrilling.

The closest thing I've heard to "He ran wrong routes more than any other Miami receiver." is that he was frustrated by the rigidity of the coaching staff and that he liked Thigpen because of his ability to improvise.

That is a far cry from ran more wrong routes than anybody else...

Nice post odinseye 3:55 PM

Spot On Dude, Spot On

and I`ve seen Simply The Bess lately training

the 2nd best 3rd down conversion slot receiver in the NFL in 2010 is in phenomenal shape

Much thicker, esp in legs than last season

Simply The Bess
Will Surely Impress

I think it was worth it, He has proven it year after year, besides the issue in my opinion is not Brandon Marshall, it's Chad Henne.

Of Course B-Marsh was worth It!

Like the above poster said w
Marino @ the Helm

B-Marsh would have had 1800 YDS & 20 TDs

Go Phins!

IN THE OLDEN DAYS THE POOP PEOPLE WOULD BOIL WATER WHEN THE CHILDREN GO TO BED HUNGRY THEY WOULD THINK THEY HAVE EAT AND THEN NOT BE HUNGRY ANY MORE...THEN THROWED OUT THE WATER

VERY FUNNY FAKE ALoco .

Kris,

Cam Cameron didn't wreck all by himself. I'll give you that. However, in his short tenure, he made more than his fair of absolutely boneheaded moves. I'm not going to go into listing them as I'm sure you remember.

As for the Ravens, Falcons and wets, you've added to my point if anything.

Flacco, Ryan and Sancheez all walked into better situations. From the FO, all the way down to the field goal kicker. Well, OK, maybe not the field goal kicker-LOL!

Fist PUMP!!!!

Nice stimulating question. I dropped my beer. Name a guy in last years second round that could have started and gave us 1000 yards with that coaching staff.

BM played well last year. Just think what would have happened if the R&R express had of ran for 500 more yards. Well darn, the field would have opened up. Just think if Henne didn't throw all of those picks. Just half. BM would have had more opportunities.

Is he worth 50 million dollars. It is just a number. Is he worth 2 second round picks. Yep

only AT DOLPHIN SITE, MOST FANS SAY ,IF OR WOULD HAVE OR IF HE HAD MARINO HE WOULD CATCH 300 BALLS ..........

THE TRUTH IS HE DROPPED THE BALL 32 TIMES LAST SEASON,HE NEVER BEEN IN ONE PLAYOFF GAME ....................

SAD FANS .

Dont know if any of you have heard of Stephen Burton. He played at West Texas A&M. He's 6'1 224lbs and ran a 4.37 40yd dash at his pro day.

He's like a slightly shorter Brandon Marshall with roid rage speed and expected to go 6th rd. He's a slight project, but well worth the investment if taken 6th rd.

He has speed to kill, big hands, and most of all what this fo likes: He's huge at 6'1 224lbs and runs like the wind! LOL...........

I find Mr. Salguero to be a dreary and flaccid writer, unable to inject any verve or energy in his prose. It is with a small measure of regret that I must take my leave and find professional football information elsewhere.

Good day.

DB.....No projects are worth while when dealing with this FO.....if your not ready to PLAY NOW.....you may very well never play a SINGLE down in the NFL....

We don't do well at developing players.....

Lawrence,

Dude, that is totally a trip, man. All the colors...

ALoco,

YOU KEEP SAYING MARSHALL HAD 32 DROPS. ACCORDING TO THIS SITE HE HAD ONLY 11.

POST A LINK WHERE IT SAYS MARSHALL HAD 32 DROPS. HERE'S MINE THAT SAYS ONLY 11 DROPS.

http://nationalpost.stats.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=7868

DB,

Can you post the link to a site that says Marshall ran more wrong routes than any other receiver on the team?

Mando forgot to say where he got that info...

Does Soiled Bottom/Nathaniel Dodsworth still show up here or has he gone the way of the dodo?
