Has Brandon Marshall been worth it so far?

It's simple and unsavory. The Dolphins are outnumbered in the number of draft picks they'll bring to the NFL draft in a little more than two weeks.

That is not up for debate.

This is: The Dolphins have fewer picks than other AFC East rivals because they made the football decision to invest their second round pick -- along with another second rounder last year -- on wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

So has Marshall been worth the price so far?

Simple question, really. Knowing what you know today, would you give up those two draft picks for Marshall today?

Marshall had a good-news, bad-news season with the Dolphins in 2010.

The good news is he caught 86 passes for 1,014 yards in his first season with the Dolphins. That led the team and was the team's most impressive season by a receiver in the Parcells-Ireland-Sparano years. Marshall was a legitimate threat to opposing defenses and often the only receiver that was double-covered by defenses.

But there is bad news, too. Marshall scored only three TDs, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2006. He played 14 games because he was injured for two others. He struggled with his hands, leading the team in dropped passes. He had a couple of on-field difficulties, including a poorly timed unsportsmanlike penalty for throwing the football at former teammate Jay Cutler in the Chicago game. He ran wrong routes more than any other Miami receiver.

And he and quarterback Chad Henne were rarely on the same page. I'm not blaming Marshall for this one. Chemistry is a two-way street. So it is up to bothhe and Henne to get their act together. Marshall talked at the end of the season how he enjoyed a better chemistry with backup Tyler Thigpen.

I hope Marshall uses his first season with the Dolphins as a launch point to better things. But what if he doesn't? We don't know. We can only judge what has actually happened.

So would you rather have those second-round picks or the player at this point?

KRIS,

I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO HENNE'S KNEE ?

Only 6 QB out of 32 attempted MORE passes than Chad Henne....

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/quarterbackRating

Im out until later guys. Have fun! LOL...........

CJ.....the bigger DOOSEY is this....how could we all beg for marshall to come here and then blame a SPEED WR who isn't EVEN on the roster for Henne's woes....thats a ROTFLMAO......

Many lesser QBs have made lemonade with much less

Posted by: kris | April 18, 2011 at 06:09 PM

I'm sure Rotheliesbeger and the Pittsburg Steelers feel the same way Kris.

They'll probably waive Wallace. I mean come on, this is football, who needs a receiver that can run sub 4.5?

Talk about revisionists history, do you even read what you type?

Do you even read what I type? This ain't about blaming anyone for Henne's lack of progress. It's about an organization putting their players in a position to succeed. Do you really think Henning was good at this for the past three seasons?

Do you really believe that our reciever corp is all set with speedster Hartline as our big threat?

Do you really believe yanking your young inexperienced QB in and out of the game for the wildfluke is the best way to develop a QB?

WORK..LATER

Aloco....good question....they never did say......

KRIS.... MIAMI IS KNOWN TO PROTECT THEIR PLAYERS FOR FUTURE TRADES BUT WHEN ROSS MET W/HENNE AT THE GOLF COURSE HE PROMISED HIM A NEW CONTRACT BY WEEK 6 INTO THE SEASON IF HE DOES WELL .....THAT'S TELLS ME ,HIS KNEE ISN'T AN ISSUE ......LATER

Odin....you and I and and every other Dolphin fan LOVED the WC on its inception.......to totally denounce it without merit IS REVIONIST history.....

Odin.....if you read what I write....you will see that I know that development of players is a HUGE deffinency in this FO......Its henne's lack of progression and development that makes me feel he isn't going to get better....I think this staff has taken him to their ceiling....NOT HIS CEILING.....but their ceiling.......

Hartlines 40 time is sub 4.4 (google) high of 4.6.......

Like I said many lesser QBs have made lemonade with far less....

Wow, you guys are really slamming each other.....must be TAX DAY!!!! lol

DB,

Hennings knew Henne was facing a stacked box and the blitz all season long.

Hennings best strategy to beat it was:

1. The wildfluke.

2. Keeping in as many blockers as possible.

3. Calling a play action on 3rd and a gazillion.

Do you really believe that the play action ACTUALLY bought Henne any time.

Do you think it fooled any of those pass rushers that are constantly trying to pad their stats and therefor getting a favorable new deal?

Do you think they slowed down for one second? It wouldn't have slowed me down not one iota.

When all of Hennings anedotes to 8 in the box and the blitzes failed, he kept trying the same old crap over and over expecting different results. Definition of Insanity.

Why didn't Henning at least pull the FB in passing situations and replace him with a WR?

Why didn't Henning EVER use the spread. If you catch a team blitzing and stacking the box, the quick slants and short crossing routes become deadly. Henning failed to make any adjustments WHATSOEVER, and simply opted to blame everybody for failing to execute.

How is this putting your team and more importantly your young inexperienced QB in the best possible position to succeed?

Henning NEVER ONCE used a 4 receiver set, REGARDLESS of time left on the clock or the down and distance.

I would hate to see Mallet have to go through the same types of things went through, because if he does, he won't have a chance.

If you think what the "Brain Trust" did too Henne is a good way to develop a young QB, then I have NO FURTHER QUESTIONS!

I myself am not willing to give up on a young QB based soley on the situations Dan Henning put him in.

After Cam Newton little visit at Gruden QB Camp, his stock drop to third. Who jump Cam you ask? Mallet

I myself am not willing to give up on a young QB based soley on the situations Dan Henning put him in.

Odin....Nobody is giving up on Henne....but I refuse to go into this season with my eyes closed and mouth open like a puppy dog....

No free passes for ANYBODY.....except WAKE AND LONG.......everyone else needs to be to EARN their job.....

Guys, let's see what Henne does this year under a different system and coaching. We're stuck with him anyway, let's shore up other weaknesses in the Oline and see if that helps Henne and the running game. We need a true center, not a guy to move over from his natural position, that's patchwork.

Those billionares are not so for being dumb or kindhearted. I believe Huizinga was the worst of all suckering everybody with his supposed quest for a great Dolphins Team.

Has Brandon Marshall been worth it so far?
NOPE!

Kris,

I APPRECIATE the debate/argument or whatever you want to call it. Seriously, I love to argue football. I don't take your opposing viewpoint personally/negatively or whatever you want to call THAT. So seriously, THANKS.

Heck, if you want, I'll break open a coldie and we can start calling each other all kinds of muther........ah, OK, just kidding there.

Anyways, back to your post. Go back and check the archives-LOL. I posted early and often that I didn't like the wildcat. It aggravated the heck out of me, because I thought it was just covering up inadequasies and simply post poning the inevitable.

Don't get me wrong, when it worked, I loved it. Still, I knew it was just a stop gap. EVERYTIME I would see us line up in the wildcat I'd get pissed. Well, except when we were inside the 5-7 yard line. Thats where I envisioned it being a very useful offense.

Redsky,

It's not because it's tax day. It's because I have a severly pinched nerve in my right shoulder from what I suspect was too much smelt dipping.

Anyways, I can't beat my dog or the kids and my girlfriend never listens. So, I just decided to take it out on Kris and Dying Breed. For those two guys, just let me say: LOL and a PERIOD!!!!

Uh Huh! Now what!?!?

I like Teaching. You can Teach a heck of a lot over Internet.

I just hope the damage done to Henne under the old system is not reversible. Anyway we'll get a look at Henne the man this year and see if he can bounce back from adversity! If he does, that's the only way to make people shut-up, prove them wrong. It's what our soldiers do every day

No free passes for ANYBODY.....except WAKE AND LONG.......everyone else needs to be to EARN their job.....

Posted by: kris | April 18, 2011 at 06:55 PM

I have to agree with you there. Unfortunately, when it comes to our most important position, I don't think it's going to happen.

Because of the CBA and everything else combined, I see Henne getting the nod by default. It sucks, but it is what it is.

That's why I want to use this draft for a speed demon, pass catching TE, at least one RB and some offensive lineman.

If were going to be forced to go with Henne anyway, we might as well solidify as many of the other areas as possible.

Odin....I'm on glass/shot number 4 of Hennesey so it won't take much to get me calling names...lol...

I can't even pretend....I loved the WC when it came out....NOW....I hate it.....I HATE IT.....

The ends crash down...the LBs blitz ....and the RB gets negative 2 yards....

If we ever could have learned to pass out of the WC...then we would have seen true evolution.....instead the jets seem to have perfected what we started.....

damn....forgot the rest of my point.....to much hennesy

Those billionares are not so for being dumb or kindhearted. I believe Huizinga was the worst of all suckering everybody with his supposed quest for a great Dolphins Team.

Sorry Oscar but that has to be one of the dumbest and unfair statements I`ve read in a while. It was after all Fins Legendary owner Joe Robbie upon loosing his G.M. (Bobby Beathard) who allows Shula to be one of the 1st. to pull double duty as Coach/G.M. and we all now what a disaster that was, no doubt Shula the G.M. was Shula the H.C.`s biggest cryptonite. Robbie does this inorder to save a couple of bucks and Beathard all he does is build a 3 time S.B. Champion for the Wash. Redskins.

Upon Mr. Robbie`s death his son Tim Robbie was always more interested in maximizing the bottom line than he was in winning anything. If not for the Robbie`s investing so heavily in building JRS there ownership period goes down as one of the cheapest in League history and they built the Stadium in order to bring the S.B. back to S.Fla while generating more revenue not because they wanted to inhance your game day experience.

In Wayne Huzienga`s time as owner we attempted to buy our way into the S.B. in 95 by signing 19 former 1st. round draft choices along with 1/3 of Wash. starting O. In 96 in an attempt to please fans and get the team back to S.B. contention he retires Shula and hires J.J. and if you remember this was one of the most popular moves in resent team history, along with Saban and Parcells later. I don`t get bashing the only owner who right or wrong went the extra mile spending and bringing the heavyweights down here in an attempt to get to the dance.

By the way if you really want to get on Huzienga`s case do it for selling the team to one of the most clueless owners in resent memory, the events of this off-season laid bare for all to see.

Kris..Odinseye..You guys are crushing it today. Nice job. Very good posts.

I'll admit when I heard Pat Whites name called on Draft Day, I was thinking:

YEAH! The Wildcat!

However, after having watched him actually run the Wildcat a few times, I started thinking:

OH NO! NOT The Wildcat!

(SIGN)Sometimes I really miss watching Mercury Morris break one to the outside............

Brandon Marshall is AWESOME.......

It's the rest of the squad that sucks. Let's be honest here. There's no Offensive Line. And for the quarterback, he didn't make the Pro Bowl this year (duh).

Look at it this way. When Brandon Marshall has his suckiest season ever......he still gets 1,000 yards. How many other Dolphins can claim something like that?

Oh Yeah!

Fin4life, I meant to give you a shout out earlier for the Wayne post.

I agree with everything you posted, I just never really gathered together my thoughts on Wayne as succinctly as you did earlier.

Great post, you helped me get my overall "Wayne" opinions into a much better perspective.

Daryl....Thanks......

Now I will steo to the side as Fin4Life takes center stage.....he always makes for good reading.....

odin,

I just can`t get my head around all the Wayne bashing, I thought that while he may have given the game of Baseball a black eye he was more than a game NFL owner. By the way I had to go off on a different line of thought no need posting anything on the Marshall debate, not while you and DB were leading front and center so nicely.

I got to admitt that while everybody thought the post by Mando lame it deffinetly made for some great posts during the day, kudos Bro`s !!

Fin4life,

You ain't kidding. The first post on this blog was at 10:56 am.

We blew threw 6 pages in just under 8 hours!!!!

I suspect Armando was just trying to stir the pot, either way, it was a well stirred pot-LOL!

Armando! Your article sucked, but...ah....GOOD JOB!!!!

odin,

LMAO ! While evrybody complained about the post it sure got some juices flowing, made for great reading all day for me.

Judging by how well this regime has drafted over the years, definitely take Marshall.

yes he has been worth it. the only thing is if he actually had a good qb, his numbers would have been better. bottom line get a new qb. henne won't be getting a new deal any time soon. he won't even be playing.

77,

At the end of last season, you and Bill Connors both said Henne will never play another down for the Phins.

How's that working out?

Palmer? Maybe Young? Mallet?

There is a Dark Horse in all this. Maybe we turn to Thiggy?

cba has been a blessing in disguise. it will facilitate the wash season. henne...flush, sparano...flush, ireland...maybe survives depending on the draft. miami has no chance in 2011, no use dreaming...new regime in 2012 will right the course. by 2013 fins should finally be a 'contenda' again.

No player on Off is worth squat until we resolve the QB issue.
The subject is mute.

Aloco, why do all the drops come from Henne? Is it his touch?

I found a website with stats for dropped passes.

I don't know if it's accurate or not. But according to them:

Marshall in 2011 - 11 drops.

Marshall in 2010 - 18 drops.

That would mean Marshall has averaged 14.5 drops over the past 2 seasons.

Welker led the league in drops this season with 13, though he was targeted more times than Marshall.

dang you mus be drunk bro, 2011 ain't even started yet...2011 drops? got a crystal ball there?

Marshall FTW

joc............. THE ANSWER FOR YOUR QUESTION IS ON ODIN THE GREAT POST @ 8;58 PM .......HE DROPPED MORE BALLS WITH ORTON THAN HENNE .

ODIN THE GREAT,

YOUR GREATNESS NOT TO BE DESCRIBED IN WORDS BUT IN LONG POSTS ...ARMANDO SHOULD PAY YOU MONEY FOT LETTING THE BLOG GO IN FIRE IN 6 PAGES .

Armando

Long time since I last posted here, right before my wife and I had twins about 7 months back.

Well now that twins and mom and dad are getting more sleep, THANK GOD!,...I'm back!!!

Hope all is well with Dolphins nation and you and your families are in good health!

So catching up or straight to the point...
We need to trade DOWN! and add that second round pick and then you may consider if Marshall was worth the trade. However either way we must get out of our pick #15 and trade down or even out of the first. The Seahaks at 25 would be my choice if the part with a second rounder. Or to have a better shot at a second rounder the Bears at 29 and thier 62 pick in the second round.
That would give the Dolphins picks: 29, 62, and 79. We need more player this is a deep draft for many of the positions of need for us. We sign one big name free agent of need and cross that off he list. Someone like a Carson Palmer, Deanelo William, or the all pro free agent guard from either Atlanta, Blaylock or the guard from Saints, ? name is escaping now but those three positions need to be addressed.
We need a guard a good in the worst way!
Along with a running back and Deangelo would fit the bill, backs that have speed and make you miss, but I still think we need to resign Brown and let Ricky W go...We need a TE who can strectch the field and another WR with some speed or plays faster than his combine

Anyway that all for now Armando
I have to get back to my fatherly duties

Dolphin Nation catch you when I can

Dolphins4lifeout!

Keep the Faith!

DOLPHIN4LIFE,

WE MISS YOU BUT FIRST ....THE TWINS...BOYS OR GIRLS....NAMES .

DID THEY START EATING ANY THING ?

dang you mus be drunk bro, 2011 ain't even started yet...

Posted by: huh | April 18, 2011 at 08:59 PM

Ha Ha! Shows how much you know. I STARTED OUT 2011 Drunkerin shyt!

I'm way ahead of you.

New Years Eve parties ROCK!

ODIN, HE COULD HAVE MEANT 2010 AND 2009 WITH ORTON .

ODIN, DO YOU HAVE TWINS ? ONE THE WORST MOVIES THAT EVER MADE .... TWINS

Aloco,

I got your back Brother! Thanks for the kind words, but I couldn't do it without Youse Guys!

Armando,

What Aloco said!

Dolphins4life,

CONGRATULATIONS! Twins are awesome, especially when their in the "terrible two's" at the same time.

Also, I've read where the Seahawks want to trade down out of the first round.

the mock is almost here and here is a preview of what i will be posting:

rd 1 #21 (from kc)
justin houston, olb, georgia: aldon smith was gone by #15 but ireland was able to trade down and still get that much needed pass rusher oppostie cam wake. houston puts them closer to the "championship caliber" defense and will make it tougher for teams to throw or run against the fins.

rd 2 # 55 (from kc)
danny watkins, g, baylor: the old man of the draft is also the "plug n' play" guy this team needs on the interior of the line. the guy is a beast and will make defenders pay on run plays.

rd 3 # 79
quan sturdivant, ilb, north carolina: fin fans everywhere are now screaming all kinds of expletives at their tv's and are looking for anything they can find to throw at it. they are busy typing e-mails to the organization asking that ireland and sparano be fired. unfortunately, sturdivant gives them another piece of the puzzle on defense; channing crowder's replacement and a major upgrade at the ilb position. the defense just got another step closer to "championship caliber" and mike nolan is giggling like a little kid.

rd 4 # 114
bilal powell, rb, louisville: a balanced draft to this point with two offense and two defense powell gives the team a much needed lift at running back. with ronnie and ricky questionable to return ireland choses a back that can give them some power running between the tackles and, with the addition of watkins at guard, the line is much improved from last year with incognito moving to center.

so, there it is. my first four picks in this year's draft. don't know if it will happen but, if it went that way, i would be happy.

Seriously? Recall that most thought we had a young franchise qb and on offense we were begging the dolphins to go after a great FA. They did. Qb didn't show. I don't think we had a chance to see the Brandon we bought cause we didn't have a qb that had confidence to trust him.

Aloco,

I did mean 2009 - 2010.

My sister had two beautiful identical twin girls. Cassie and Shayna. One of them is a dancer and the other a surgical tech.

They love their Uncle Odin(not in a wierd way of course)!

BREAKING NEWS ONLY FOR DB.................. MIKE POUNCEY MEDICAL REPORT CAME BAKE AFTER THE COMBINE CONCERNING HIS..........KNEES....... SOME REPORT SAYING THAT TEAMS LOOKED AT HIM ARE CONCERNED .

Marshall had 14 redzone targets in 14 games, thats unexceptable. How do you pay a guy 50 million and not demand your QB throw to him when it counts? Marshall has one season where people question his worth and it happened here with a QB and offense that people questioned. He needs to have less drops for sure but he needs more chances to make big plays in the endzone.

NOW DB IS 2 FOR ,HE WANTS US TO DRAFT INGRAM WITH HIS KNEES AND NOE POUNCEY WITH KNEES ALSO ......IT'S COMEDY CENTRAL .

AND NOW POUNCY WITH HIS KNEES ALSO .

I read an interview from Brandon Marshall.

He said when he wanted to improvise at the line of scrimmage because of a favorable match up, David Lee kept vetoing the idea.

Regardless of how Henne felt about it, he sided with Lee.

Thigpen, when given the oppurtunity, ignored Lee's veto. Of course Thigpen got the "hook" pretty quick too.

However this all turns out, I hope Daboll lets the players PLAY!

Marshall's 86 catches last season indicates a minor drop in his performance. I wouldn't consider that an alarm. Heck, the entire organization struggled, shooting their own feet with a regularity you'd think suicidal.

I hate to say this, but I foresee more of the same. The gutted coaching staff might be a breath of fresh air, but I keep reminding myself that it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. If the assnt. coaches couldn't coach their intended positions, why in the world would they coach another position great?

Our draft board isn't much to brag about. We'd better hit the nail on the head, and leave the lead holstered.

Were stuck with a still unproven QB, with just enough wiggle room to have, "hope."

Looking at all the angles, I say we should not even consider parting with Marshell. The beast will be back to top form when the season begins.

SHOULD ARMANDO PAY ODIN ? FOR WHAT DOES FOR ARMANDO ?

AT LEAST GIVE ODIN TICKETS TO THE GAMES OR SEND HIM A GIFT CARD FOR WHOLE FOODS WORTH AT LEAST 800 DOLLARS EVERY MONTH OR GIVE HIM A MEMBERSHIP TO A NIGHT CLUB WHERE ODIN CAN SHOW THE WORLD HIS MUSIC .

MALLET ADMITTED HIS PAST DRUG USE ,HE'S THE FIRST DRAFT PICK TO ADMIT SUCH THING......... HE'S GETTING PRAISE FOR THAT WHILE THEY SAY HE'S BEEN HONEST NOT LIKE DAN MARINO ............ THE ARTICLE IS ON PHINPHANTICSITE .

SO POUNCY HAS KNEES PROBLEMS AND MALLET TOOK DRUGS ....

Armando,

YEAH! What Aloco said!

PS: If you let me on your Radio Show, I'll promise not to get belligerent. This time.
