I've written and spoken a lot of words the past three days leading up to and during this draft. I'm tagging out.
Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland is tagging in.
This is what he said Friday night after the second round was complete and the Dolphins picked Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas. You tell me (and him) what you think of what he said.
Heeeeere's Jeff Ireland:
(Opening Statement) - “We moved up from the middle of 3rd round and picked up Daniel Thomas, running back from Kansas State. What we like about Daniel is that he is a physical runner; [He is] big, very versatile. He can run, he can catch; He has good play speed. You guys have tweeted that he is a 4.7 [40-yard dash] guy. This guy was a 4.55 [40-yard dash] for us, verified. He probably has better speed then running backs that went [higher in the draft] then him, timed speed. [We] like the player; very physical kind of guy, our kind of guy, very physical. Once he gets to the second level, he can make linebackers miss, he can make [the] secondary miss. He is kind of a one-cut runner, but very physical. He punishes defenders when he gets his pads down. He has only played running back for two years; He is a former quarterback. That intrigues me that he has been able to accomplish what he has been able to accomplish in such a short period of time. He has a lot of upside as a player. Like I said, he is six-foot 230, runs a 4.5 [40-yard dash]. Those are all good qualities."
(On the one attribute that was appealing enough to move up in the draft to get him) – “He is a big, physical runner. That is what we are looking for. His versatility [as well]. He is one of the backs that shows he can block the blitz. He can also catch on third down. Just his versatility was what we were looking for."
(On his negotiations with the Washington Redskins to move up in the draft) – “I probably talked to Washington five times throughout the day and you noticed Washington moved down a couple of times. They kept calling me, calling me, calling me and then quite frankly I saw a lot of running backs going and that intrigued me… saw some teams in the top of the third round that concerned me [and that they may select] the [running] back I was coveting might go there. So that is why I went up and got him."
(On how much he helps solidify the running back position) – “He helps solidify the running back position just like [Mike] Pouncey helps solidify the offensive line. Like I said, he is our kind of guy. He is physical and he got good play speed. We have work to do at every position still. I think we still have work to do at the running back position whether it be free agency or the draft but he helps us for sure.”
(On what the selection means for Ronnie Brown) – “It means that we have one more player to compete if we ask him to come back. I wouldn’t look into Ronnie or Ricky [Williams’] future around here as being over. I wouldn’t do that.”
(On if he thinks he stills needs to address the team seed issue at some point) – “Well we got four picks left tomorrow…Yeah, I’m still trying to do that for sure…but that was a position that I thought we needed to try to get better at and I think we did.”
(On Daniel Thomas’ background playing quarterback and the team running the wildcat and if that was something that intrigued him most due to the potential of him playing the wildcat factor) – “Not necessarily, I wasn’t looking for that. I was looking for a running back. That’s what intrigued me about this kid is that this guy knows how to run the football.”
(On Daniel Thomas’ fumble history and what he thinks about that)—“(You know) whenever you got a guy that has put the ball in the ground you look into it…and it wasn’t that much of a concern. I’m aware of that I think he had six fumbles this year. I was more intrigued with the forty runs over ten yards and the…I think he had fifteen or sixteen runs over twenty yards, so. I’m more intrigued with that thing than I was worried about the fumbles.”
(On what running back came to mind that Daniel Thomas can be compared to in his opinion)—“(You know) I don’t want to throw that out there. I know I did that earlier with (Mark) Ingram but I think that it puts a little bit of undue pressure on the kid. I had a couple of guys in mind that are pretty successful in this business currently today but I’d rather not put that kind of pressure on the kid to be honest with you."
(On how many times did he meet with Daniel Thomas and what was his impression of him)—“Met with him a couple of times…we actually had him in the building not too long ago and (you know), great kid, engaging personality—everybody there at Kansas State from the scout’s standpoint really vouched for his character and his work ethic and his toughness and just really felt like his future was ahead of him.”
(On Daniel Thomas comparing himself to Steven Jackson or Larry Johnson and if those are fair assessments in comparing him to)—“Those are guys that come to mind…there’s another running back that makes me think more of, but, those are a couple of them I guess but not the guy I was thinking of.”
(On if it’s Adrian Peterson (follow up to previous question)—“No, not him.”
(On if he feels like he still has ammunition to use at some point in the draft to trade if need be)—“Sure, yeah.”
(On how he feels about Ryan Mallet)—“Like I said earlier, I like the kid. I think he’s got a great great future ahead of him. I just felt like it wasn’t the right fit for us at this time, so, but I like the kid very much. Again, I think he’s got a bright future.”
(On the latest developments in the labor dispute) – “Well we just got to go with what the league is telling us. It is what it is; it was good to see the players yesterday, or today I should say, great to see some of those guys. I wish it would have lasted a little longer, but we’re in an unrest labor situation, so we just go with the flow.”
(On whether he feels he can still address the issue of team speed on day three of the draft) – “Yeah, I do see that. The draft is, again it’s a chain reaction and sometimes the things you want to address if they fall to you and you have your board set to be able to take those, great, but I’m not going to reach for a lesser player just to identify a player that may or may not be the right fit for us, so I’m not going to reach for a player. I’m going to let the draft fall to me, and if it fits our needs then we’ll take the player.”
(On when Daniel Thomas appeared on his radar) – “Well he probably got on the radar back in last May at the Combine Meetings probably. That’s probably most of the time those are the first time I hear about some of these kids, and he was a one year player out of Junior College. That was probably the first time I had heard of the player. I didn’t take a visit to Kansas State two years ago, so I didn’t really know too much about him.”
(On when he sees the Bills take Marcell Dareus, the Jets take two defensive tackles and with the Patriots already having Vince Wilfork if he is even more pleased with selecting Mike Pouncey) – “Sure, I mean I really like the Dareus kid and when I saw Buffalo take him, that’s not why I took Pouncey but it makes you feel good that you got him for sure. He’s going to be athletic, and he’s going to give us a lot of mobility up in the offensive line and also give us a lot of strength and power when we’re trying to run the ball inside as well.”

Does anyone have the ratio of defensive lineman drafted to that of running backs, or recievers? Even add quarterbacks to that list.
My point is that if you notice the teams in our division have strenghtend their defensive fronts. In this passing league if you cannot put pressure on the quarterback good luck. The Pouncey pick solidifies our line so that we can combat this. Now we have to find the second peice to the modern offense..A passer that can execute.
Hopefully Thomas can help take a little pressure off our passing game. Even though the league is more pass orientated. We need our attempts down to around 25-30 a game. with an occasional 30 plus game thrown in. Even Brady, or Manning, and Brees have mixed results when forced to pass that many times. If we can establish some better balance, and protect whoever the quarterback is. This draft will be considred a win.

I love how everyone complains that we could have had Ingram and Mallett...but BOTH dropped Big time, Mallett all the way to 3rd round?? Yes, Maybe Ingram is the next Emmitt Smith and Mallett the next Brady, but what IF they are the next Sammie Smith and Ryan Leaf?? Because we KNOW which way it will go?? One thing I know from watching the NFL for so many years, is there are NO guarantees...ever!! I like Pouncey...no line, no running game..no line, no passing game...and with Ronnie and Ricky getting long in the tooth, we need a guy like Thomas...or at least the potential he brings...just think it funny that football guys like Ireland that spend SOOOO much time studying and evaluating players...that WE the Fans ALWAYS "assume" that We know better...??!! Really? I am trusting the picks, and hope for that speed TE, Scatback, Speed WR tomorrow...but if I DONT get exactly what I WANT...then hopefully the Phins will get exactly what THEY need...

Ireland doesn't know what he is talking about. I have seen more than a few games and Thomas hasn't avoided or run away from 10 tackles in his entire career. Dude is a slower...less laterally quick Ronnie Brown. How can u go thru and entire draft and continue to field the slowest set of wr's rb's and te's in the league. Embarrassing!! Nothing else to say...this is why we won't score points or make chunk yardage plays.

So far, this draft scheme appears legit. Seems the FO is drafting cautiously, but effectively.
Hope Thomas isn't hampered by too many hamstring injuries.

Remember we moved up two places to take Carey...we have entrusted complete managing fools since. This is/was a terrible draft. Sparono is an idiot and will have a 3 and 5 team by mid season. Ross will retire him and should then sell the franchise recognizing he too is a complete "female organ" and has no place in the NFL. I am beyond pissed at this front office.

(1) Thomas is almost as old as Ronnie Brown
(2) Thomas is slower then Ronnie Brown
(3) Thomas has a fumbling problem
(4) Pouncey has a hiking problem which leads to fumbles
(5) The Dolphins have now wasted 4 draft picks on two players to run the Wildcat, including a #2 on Pat White and now a #3/#5/#7 for Thomas

..The rest of this draft we will have to hope to find players we can plug in situationaly. We may get lucky and find another starter. But we all know what those odds are.
We have accomplished finding 2 starters. Barring injuries. This is better then last year. This is what we needed to do. Even if we would have drafted a quarterback. It was unlikely this player would have found the starting lineup. We have found players that are going to soak up a ton of snaps, which for rookies is a valuable asset.
Even if we draft a tight end. That player is only going to be situational. A deep threat reciever, again situational. I'm not saying these won't be important pieces to our puzzle. I'm just stating that we will get production out of both the top 2 spots. You can't ask much more from rookies...

The Patriots are prolly the best place for Mallet honestly... He has some time to mature and see it done right w/ Brady and the Pats (hate to say it) have a great OLine. He needed a place where he can sit in the pocket undisturbed and pick apart defenses...

Well, I'd say the Pouncey pick is pretty good, and matches a need. If they could get someone really quick like Taiwan Jones to pair with Thomas, it might be a pretty good draft. I'd take Jones because with his speed you might get something out of him on special teams returning the ball as well. Worth the gamble in the 4th round, IMHO. I am really glad we haven't given up picks from next year!
On Mallett - well, I think we missed a chance here, but enough teams looked at him twice and said no that I can't blame the 'Fins for being prudent. I would point out that Belichick has really had two good quarterbacks in his time with the Patriots - Cassell, who hasn't been that hot since he was traded, and Brady, who was, in many ways, a lucky pick-up. There's no guarantee that Mallett will be the third success. On the flipside, Kevin O'Connell - remember him? No, me neither. Brian Hoyer isn't going to set the world on fire either. Let's not assume that Mallett is Brady 2.0 without more evidence.

Doubling up on RB is not likely especially after getting rid of that 5th rd pick... Plus from what Ireland said it is still likely they try and get Brown back... I think it'd be more prudent to get a sleeper with one of the 7's

I still like Charles Clay in the 4th he is a lot like Daniel Thomas only bigger, stronger, and can catch better... Can throw it as well and can be used similarly... Could be the HB we are looking for... Jordan Cameron or DJ Williams would be my guess as far as offensive needs...

Have you read the scouting reports on Thomas?
ALL of them say he will be injury prone at this level because of his upright bruising running style.
I know nobody can really know, but that is what all the scouts were saying.

I told you we would bring a lot of speed to the Dolphins!! Despite what all of you bloggers say, Thomas is Superfast! I know cause he runs faster then me! He will be a great replacement for Ronnie Brown whom is getting too old. He is like 1 year younger!! And this Pouncey kid is a real stud. I've seen his brother play for the Steelers and since they are identical twins, I am sure he will be as good as his brother! In fact, we drafted him higher, so he should be better!! Ireland tells me he is going to be better then HOF Dwight Stephenson! So I am expecting Pouncey to score a lot of TDs for us next year!!

Looking at the mess Ireland has made so far the only thing i can figure out is this.
Speed receiver and pass catching TE next.
Maybe a late pick on Mario Fanin(4.37-40) if he lasts long enough.

if you look at the patriots draft it hasn't been anything extremely special. the most impressive pick they had so far is ras-i dowling. the guy is a hammer. but, like i said before, whatever side nate solder plays wake will be right there with him making solder call him daddy. the guy is a 6' 8" slug.

I totaly missed on the value of Tawain Jones. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I thought he could be the first running back we would take. He may only see the field on a quarter of the plays a guy like Thomas will. Still I would love to see him in the fold. As you said. It would give us a nice 1-2 punch, and give us a return threat on those rare times the returner isn't knelling down for a touchback...There are punt returns though.
The one thing that hasn't changed is that we still have absolutley no big play threats. It is hard to keep up with teams that have that ability to score with a blink of any eye. when our attack is based on long methodic drives. If everything doesn't go right...Field goal city baby. I understand the frustration. And giving away what amounts to a fifth rounder only adds to this frustration.

Daniel Thomas is too slow, lacks lateral quickness and runs high. I know of no other running back with those qualities who has been successful in recent times. FAIL.

losing a 5th and a 7th is not that big a deal to get the player that most fits the scheme we run... I'm not sure any of you have better inside info on this guy than Ireland and from what it sounds like to me he is not the type of player to flop and miss a game he is a team leader and a very raw talent at RB but if he has the athleticism to change positions like that and be at the top of his class at the position it just goes to show how good he really is and can be... my only concern is his age for a RB... only from what i've read here but How old is he?
