Day Two of the draft is about to begin and two questions dominate:
Will the Dolphins trade into the second round?
As to getting into the second round, I have serious doubts the Dolphins will use their limited ammo to get into the round. That is obviously just a prediction, but I have a hard time believing Miami will invest the kind of capital necessary to come from nowhere to the the second.
That would require the Dolphins giving up their 2012 first round pick.
If the idea is for them to use their third round pick to try to move up into the second round, they still would have to yield either their fourth-round selection or perhaps the third rounder plus a high pick next year. Again, that is a prohibitive price.
I'm not saying the Dolphins would never pay such a price but ...
“I think you can always get ammunition," Ireland said yesterday abou tthe prospects of moving up. "I mean, look what Atlanta did. You always have ammunition I think. You can use your picks up until 2014 if you wanted to. We had a couple players on the board that if they fell to a certain spot then we might have jumped up, but we didn’t choose to do that.”

Let's see who the Redskins pick with our picks.
I'll be pissed if they pick Mallet with # 79.

Let the kids play and then evaluate the draft. I agree that we overpaid, but then again the chance of getting starters in the 5th and 7th round are very slim...
Also, remember there is still free agency to fill the gaps...
Posted by: Arturo | April 29, 2011 at 09:01 PM
Was Thomas a good pick? Of course. Did they give up too much to get him? Probably. Will be interested to see what "fan favorites" go off the board prior to the 79th selection.

I hate Dolphin FANS you are the worst in all of football, I wont wear my jersey out because then they will know i must be somewhat retarded as 95% of Dolphin FANS are.

"when the Dolphins win 3 in a row, all you read about in the papers is how great the Dolphins are. But let them lose two in a row, and billboards start popping up demanding that the Dolphins fire the coach. No class."
Posted by: CRYBABIES | April 29, 2011 at 09:02 PM
after calming down i might be ok with the pick but where is the speed? where is the qb? I personally like none of the veterans out there and just don't get it
Posted by: bigd | April 29, 2011 at 09:02 PM
First its not 3 picks that we gave up, we swapped the 3rd for the 2nd where we moved up to. To do that cost us a 5th and one of our 3 7ths, not too bad for a guy some argued was the 2nd best RB in the draft and we don't have any RB's. GREAT PICK
Posted by: NJack | April 29, 2011 at 09:02 PM
This dude will be good, do some reseach on him and you will see he is a solid good back. This likely means the end of the Ricky/Ronnie run here in Miami though but he will be a good replacement for them.

FINATIC13 I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!!
Posted by: CRYBABIES | April 29, 2011 at 09:02 PM
In reality, when you look at the trade you have to take out the 3rd round pick. That's obvious you have to give that up to move up period. So, in reality they gave up a 5th and 7th to move up. What kind of players do you get in the 5th round? Projects. What kind of players do you get in the 7th? Long shots and practice squaders. They keep all of next years picks to trade for the future QB IMO.

Pats possibly taking Mallet.
Posted by: Swamy | April 29, 2011 at 09:03 PM
They make it impossible to get exciyed about this organization. I was alright with Pouncey but this is rediculous! This is just the reincarnation of jj johnson.
Posted by: Turd Ferguson | April 29, 2011 at 09:03 PM
You guys heard it...I'm in charge...That means all you optimist can go screw yourselves...That was a HORRIBLE move...Wasn't JT a 3rd Rd pick? Guess Henne is our guy. We could have kept BROWN and drafted a RB with that 4th or picked up one via FA.
Posted by: Marc | April 29, 2011 at 09:04 PM
JB
I did not say he would be any good. I be the first to tell you I have no idea if he will be. I only told you that he was the person Miami was drafting earlier this week.
Posted by: NFLBS | April 29, 2011 at 09:04 PM
Remember, Ireland said he likes players that are NFL ready!
Posted by: ZEIK | April 29, 2011 at 09:05 PM
HAHAHAH...PATS pick MALLET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Marc | April 29, 2011 at 09:05 PM
Wow...No one can beat the Pats at anything, including cheating, but hey, they still are light years ahead of the pathetic Fins. Mallet went to the Pats. Did I say WOW already? WOE
Posted by: Shulashula | April 29, 2011 at 09:05 PM
pats gonna take mallet this is gonna come back to haunt us
Posted by: eric | April 29, 2011 at 09:05 PM
What did Brown do last year, you want to talk slow, he's cooked. I come here to enjoy the draft with other fans, a lot of you people suck, we have NO football with this lockout, lets enjoy what we have, and now we have a RB.
Posted by: NJack | April 29, 2011 at 09:05 PM
Guys...Daniel Thomas is the real deal. Had some SAT problems in high school...had he been able to overcome them...the Canes, Gators, Noles, and Georgia all were ready to offer him!! However, he went the Mississippi JUCO route to K-State, and has been among the best in the Big 12 two years running..........The 4.6 is a bit deceiving...Daniel...or "Big Boy" as he was known in high school, is as fast as he needs to be!! Dolphins got a good one here!!
Posted by: Foodman53 | April 29, 2011 at 09:05 PM
Future will have Mallet killing Fins.
Posted by: Swamy | April 29, 2011 at 09:06 PM
Yeah, he MUST be horrible! Because the Pats pick terrible players
Posted by: Marc | April 29, 2011 at 09:06 PM
Unless they trade down, that's the last time you'll see the Phins move in this draft.
They can't afford to give up multiple picks to move up again, by the simple fact that they can't go signing undrafted free agents when the draft ends b/c of the lockout/CBA BS.
Posted by: Ithaca Phin Fan | April 29, 2011 at 09:06 PM
who cares if the pats take Mallet?! 31 teams passed on him for a reason...Belicheat can take the gample as he has a gazillion picks to play with...
Posted by: Arturo | April 29, 2011 at 09:07 PM
Mallett = Quinn no worries at all.
Posted by: Bogota Phin Fan | April 29, 2011 at 09:07 PM
patriots taking mallett????????????????
Posted by: Image | April 29, 2011 at 09:07 PM
Let me guess... Now evryone will mention how NE is the greatest thing for selecting Mallett. They could pick a turn with no peanuts and people would still be envious.
Posted by: VA FIn Fan | April 29, 2011 at 09:08 PM
You heard it here first:
Mikel Leshoure will end up being the best RB of this draft.
Posted by: Ithaca Phin Fan | April 29, 2011 at 09:08 PM
All you hear is we need a QB, I bet you if C. Henne was in this draft class he would go in the topt ten of the first round. There are maybe 2 QB that are better than him in this draft....maybe. I would only pick Cam over him just on his possible ability to change games. Henne is not that bad as you think. Just because he doesnt get all emotional like an immature kid. There will never be another Marino and the Peyton's and Tom's only come around every so often. Relax and support your team you fn crybabies. If you hate the Dolphins so much then STFU and go root for Jacksonville because they jsut got a new QB and they will still suck for another 20 years.
Posted by: finatic13 | April 29, 2011 at 09:08 PM
Cant even have false hope on draft day anymore.WOW
Posted by: ashevillephinfan | April 29, 2011 at 09:09 PM
We should have fired them when we had the chance. Can we fire Ross?
Posted by: DONE | April 29, 2011 at 09:09 PM
They are saying Mallet to the Pats.
Posted by: UTdolfan | April 29, 2011 at 09:09 PM
So let's get this straight : We're supposed to take seriously the football "expertise " of the same people who were insisting Mallett was a first rounder and Brady Quinn was THE MAN? Yeah, riiight!
Posted by: uganda | April 29, 2011 at 09:09 PM
mallet to patriots!
Posted by: alex b | April 29, 2011 at 09:09 PM
Pats just took Mallett...watch them suck a 1st and 2nd pick out of someone two years from now.
Posted by: Jon | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
I wonder how Mallets "night out" cost him
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
Ricky and Ronnie are both better than thomas right now
they are not much older either. Thomas will be 25 this year. 3 picks-17 spots for this?
Jones, Hunter and Murray still on the board?
how else can you spin this?
we got a 4th, a 6th and two 7ths left. THATS IT.
What do you expect anyone to say
other than deaf dum blind apologist this is simply devestating
we got a guard to play center a running back no better than ricky and ronnie and 4th, 6th and two 7ths left.
what do you want somebody to say?
FIST PUMP?
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
Ireland must be fired!
I ashamed to cal myself a Dolphin Fan.
Why move up for that clown?
Posted by: I'm done | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
He was the safest RB in the draft and he really fits our scheme. We plan on running the ball 3 plays and then punting and then when we get the ball we'll try that again. Eventually we will get some first downs and we can bring in our best weapon Dan Carpeneter.
I know the fans want excitement but we need to protect the ball. I mean are QB is really inefficent on those 3rd and 15's we keep finding ourselves in. Coach and I have a philosophy and we believe those fancy offenses run by Houston,Atlanta,Green Bay and the Jets are just a fad. Eventually the game will come down to 2yrds and puff of grass.
Posted by: Jeff Ireland | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
mando you think we have a chance at DJ Willaims?
Posted by: alex b | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
bb finds brady ib the 6th now he gets mallet in the third.
this is why we will never catch NE as long as we have this front office and coaching staff
Posted by: eric | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
HAHAHA With Taiwan Jones on the board, the patsies took some RB named Stevan Ridley. Makes me feel better about the Daniel Thomas pick.
idiots

Mallett to Pats...Un-freakin-believable...
Posted by: LAPhinsPhan | April 29, 2011 at 09:10 PM
don't worry about mallet. brady will be there for 4 or 5 more years, minimum. mallet is shaky and inaccurate under pressure.
Posted by: austin | April 29, 2011 at 09:11 PM
Marc
The pats will show Mallet to everybody and then trade him for a couple 1 rounds and a secound. they will not keep him.
Posted by: NFLBS | April 29, 2011 at 09:11 PM
They did not give up 3 picks to get Thomas. The 2nd rd pick takes the place of the 3rd rd pick. Therefore they gave up a 5h and 7th to move up. The 7th is a crap shoot anyway so they basically dealt a 5th to move up. It is not as bad as a lot of you are making it out to be.
Like some of you have said and i have seen the same on most sites, Thomas is consistently the 4th or 5th rated RB and he was the 4th RB taken in this draft.
Posted by: Chris | April 29, 2011 at 09:11 PM
Pats take Mallett. What do you haters say now?
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 29, 2011 at 09:11 PM
The Patriots do pick horrible players.....every year they have like 12 picks per draft. They probly equal about a 70% bust rate. Name 5 good players they have drafted in the last 3 years....thats about 35-40 pics. Don't take too lomg as your not going to find them.
Posted by: finatic13 | April 29, 2011 at 09:11 PM
The Patz are just F-in with us now...
Posted by: GOPHINZ | April 29, 2011 at 09:12 PM
why is everyone talking about Mallet? he sucks...
Posted by: WisconsinFinsFan | April 29, 2011 at 09:12 PM
They picked him with the 74th, but not the 73rd pick...things that make you go hmmmm...
Posted by: Bogota Phin Fan | April 29, 2011 at 09:12 PM
DT 1,585 yds rushing and 19 TDs in 2011
Posted by: morphin | April 29, 2011 at 09:13 PM
Mallett sucks. Henne will still be around in 4 years and Mallett wont.
Posted by: finatic13 | April 29, 2011 at 09:13 PM
Let's see who the Skins pick with our 79th pick.
Posted by: Swamy | April 29, 2011 at 09:14 PM
This is absolutely disgusting. We had 2 opportunities to get Mallet and instead we do this... WTF? You are an absolute idiot and moron Ireland. I hate you.
Posted by: FB | April 29, 2011 at 09:14 PM
Well Mallett goes to New England with a chip on his shoulder...others may have had negative things to say about his talent but I am certain he will find success in New England...God help us Dolphin fans...
Posted by: djstarface | April 29, 2011 at 09:14 PM
So now the Pats can trade Brady to the Dolphins for a #2 draft pick in 2012!!
Posted by: Greg | April 29, 2011 at 09:14 PM
the dolphins are incapable of developing a qb...who is going to mentor him, henne?? they are better of getting carson palmer and moving forward.
Posted by: austin | April 29, 2011 at 09:15 PM
if Mallett beats up on the fins for years after brady I am going to seriously be pissed off....
that is all. thank you.
