Day Two of the draft is about to begin and two questions dominate:
Will the Dolphins trade into the second round?
As to getting into the second round, I have serious doubts the Dolphins will use their limited ammo to get into the round. That is obviously just a prediction, but I have a hard time believing Miami will invest the kind of capital necessary to come from nowhere to the the second.
That would require the Dolphins giving up their 2012 first round pick.
If the idea is for them to use their third round pick to try to move up into the second round, they still would have to yield either their fourth-round selection or perhaps the third rounder plus a high pick next year. Again, that is a prohibitive price.
I'm not saying the Dolphins would never pay such a price but ...
“I think you can always get ammunition," Ireland said yesterday abou tthe prospects of moving up. "I mean, look what Atlanta did. You always have ammunition I think. You can use your picks up until 2014 if you wanted to. We had a couple players on the board that if they fell to a certain spot then we might have jumped up, but we didn’t choose to do that.”

POUNCEY,
PUT IT THIS WAY. THE REDSKINS GAINED 2 EXTRA PICKS BY TRADING 1 AWAY.
IN MONETARY TERMES, THE LANGUAGE WE ALL KNOW, IF YOU SPEND 1 DOLLAR AND MAKE 3 IN RETURN. THAT'S A 200% RETURN.
iTS NOT A 300% RETURN BECAUSE YOU HAD TO SPEN I DOLLAR TO MAKE THE OTHER 2 IN INTEREST. STILL ITS CALLED TRIPLING YOUR MONEY BECAUSE YOU ORIGINALLY STARTED OUT WITH ONE OF THOSE DOLLARS.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:22 PM
2 picks to MOVE up.
PLUS
1 pick on Thomas.
EQUALS
3 picks
Hence: We spent 3 picks on Daniel Thomas.
Not only are you Nasty Teacher your as dumb as the rest of the jocks here.
Ah 1 more, ah 2 more ah 3 more. ROTFLMAO.
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 11:22 PM
Speaking of Stanzi...Did he work out with the Phins? Are we going to address QB, or did we miss the boat? I really would like to be a fly on the wall in the team interviews with Mallet. There has to be a reason he fell so far. So far we needed a qb. and we passed on him. Something is fishy in Phinland...
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 29, 2011 at 11:23 PM
Pouncey: you're on the right track. We pick Pouncey. Now we have 7 picks left
Make trade and pick Thomas. Now we have 4 picks left
We will pick 4 more players in addition to Thomas and Pouncey
Thats 6 total players drafted. We started with 8 picks.
That means we gave up 2 picks in the trade
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:23 PM
we had 8 pics, now we got 6.it cost us 2 pics to move into 2nd.a 5th & a 7th,the 3rd rd pic was the trade,5th & 7th was compensation.i think it was a really good deal.thomas would have been gone by our 3rd round pic.pats would have taken him instead of that no name somebody i never heard of.
Posted by: BOONEDOG | April 29, 2011 at 11:24 PM
It's not a math thing. I think we all passed 1st grade. Pouncey is looking at the trade from a different angle than most on the board. He sees it as we spent three picks on one player. The cost for Thomas was a 3rd, 5th, and 7th round pick. That's three folks. The others see it as giving up three picks in return for one. That's true too, but we spent it on Thomas. That's three invested in the same player.
Posted by: GatorChris | April 29, 2011 at 11:27 PM
okay,
for the glass half empty crowd:
tomorrow we pick 14th. it's just like we're back in the first rd again. so, here's the guys we have available:
luke stocker
dj williams
kendall hunter
jordan todman
edmond gates
niles paul
jordan cameron
ricky stanzi
delone carter
jacquizz rodgers
bilal powell
pat devlin
denarius moore
virgil green
taiwan jones
derrick locke
dion lewis
these are guys that were left over from day two or have 4th round grades or are "tweeners." there is 17 players listed. how many will be gone by the time we pick at #14? i don't know but i bet it will be half at the most. therefore, we have our shot at the other 7. so, if you want your qb it could be stanzi or devlin. hopefully, it's stanzi. at te you have stocker, williams and green. the consensus favorite is green. if we go him or williams would it make some of you feel a little better? what about edmond gates or tawain jones? did anyone think we could possibly have a shot at one of these guys with 3 rds gone? come on guys. give ireland a little credit for being aggressive enough to trade up into the 2nd and get something we needed. he took one of the elite backs in the draft. think what you want but thomas was one of the most prolific running backs in college football over the last two years. no one year wonder here.
now, that being said they will probably take charles clay.
Posted by: dm1 dolphan | April 29, 2011 at 11:28 PM
Pouncey please just admit you're messing with everyone because it's gotten beyond strange and is now just scary.
"But check it out. After pouncey we had 7 picks left, Right or wrong?"
RIGHT
"That's 7. Now we pick Thomas and we have 4 picks left, right or wrong?"
RIGHT BUT THE THOMAS PICK FOR SOME REASON ELUDES YOU. 4 plus Thomas equals five right?
Answer this for us. Why are you not counting the Thomas pick as a pick? Because if you count correctly you will see that we had 8 picks. We have taken 2 players. that leaves 6 picks left right? We traded 2 of them away because one of them wasn't traded away! The 2nd rounder used to be a 3rd rounder. WE DID NOT LOSE THAT PICK. Please tell me you understand this.
Look, you're saying we only have 5 picks in this draft, so tomorrow night when the Dolphins have drafted 6 players how will you explain that?
Posted by: Serg | April 29, 2011 at 11:28 PM
You are making a point that we only have 5 picks in this draft correct?
Posted by: Serg | April 29, 2011 at 11:29 PM
Pouncey,
Thats where the two of you are getting your signals crossed. You both are saying two very different things.
You: We spent 3 picks on Thomas
Mim: we spent 2 picks to move up
YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT! LOL..............
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:29 PM
3 minus 1 = 2 duh,is dat it
Posted by: BOONEDOG | April 29, 2011 at 11:30 PM
That means we gave up 2 picks in the trade
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:23 PM
There you go. We spent two picks on the TRADE. PLUS ANOTHER ONE ON THOMAS.
SO, we spent 3 picks to draft 1 running back. That's what I said to BEGIN with.
Not sure what Dying Breed was talking about. Fact is, we've spent 4 draft picks on TWO PLAYERS.
Not a good thing considering Belichick has already made that many picks in trades.
Way to go Ireland, your averaging two picks a player. Reaches to boot.
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 11:31 PM
Yes, you are right Bouncey. Now go back to your corner and try counting to one.
Posted by: NastyTeacher | April 29, 2011 at 11:32 PM
POUNCEY,
YOURE SAYING WE SPENT 3 PICKS ON THOMAS. wHICH IS CORRECT.
HE'S SAYING WE SPENT 2 PICKS TO MOVE UP. WHICH IS CORRECT.
THIS ARGUMENT IS SO FUNNY BECAUSE YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT! LOL..........
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:32 PM
Armando...Where are you??? You should be gloating...You are the only guy that got the first two picks right....Come and recieve your rightful praise!
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | April 29, 2011 at 11:33 PM
Hence: We spent 3 picks on Daniel Thomas.
Dude stop calling people dumb. This wasn't your original point. You said we LOST THREE PICKS.
That was your point. We are saying you can't count a player being picked as a "lost pick". If it was lost we wouldn't have a player. We LOST 2 picks because the third is now playing for the Dolphins.
WE LOST TWO PICKS
WE LOST TWO PICKS
WE LOST TWO PICKS
WE LOST TWO PICKS
WE LOST TWO PICKS
Posted by: Serg | April 29, 2011 at 11:33 PM
Lol, this is ridiculous. There is NOT two ways to look at it. Started with 8 picks, ended up with 6. We gave up 2 picks to acquire Thomas. End of story
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:35 PM
DONT YOU GUYS GET IT? POUNCEY'S SAYING WE SPENT 3 PICKS "ON THOMAS"
YOU GUYS ARE SAYING WE SPENT 2 PICKS "TO MOVE UP"
EVERY F*UCKING BODY IS RIGHT. DO YOU KNOW HOW STUPID YOU GUYS LOOK ARGUING WHEN BOTH OF YOU ARE CORRECT BUT DONT SEE IT? LOL..............
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:35 PM
Well, now that there is no reason to pick Todman, i hope we end up with DJ Williams. He was pretty impressive in the couple of Ark games I watched this year
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:38 PM
I GUESS IF POUNCEY DOESNT LIKE THE THOMAS PICK. THEN OF COURSE IN HIS OPINION WE LOST 3 PICKS. 3 BECAUSE HE CONSIDER THOMAS HIMSELF A WASTED PICK. LOL............
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:38 PM
Read your original post pouncey. You did say we gave up three picks for Thomas. But then 5 posts later you worded it differently. But it just sounds weird to say "we gave up a pick for a player" when the pick you gave up was to actually draft that player. In NFL terms you don't say you gave up a pick unless you get nothing in return for said pick. I think this is where most of us were having a problem. No biggie, just a misunderstanding.
Posted by: Serg | April 29, 2011 at 11:39 PM
THANK YOU DB AND GATORCHRIS YOU BEAT ME TO THE PUNCH!!
NOW LETS STOP WITH THE MATH UNLESS ITS TRYING FIGURE HOW WE'RE GONNA GET DJ OR VIRGIL AND A QB AND SPEED WR WITH THE 4 PICKS THAT ARE LEFT.
Posted by: DolFan Rick | April 29, 2011 at 11:40 PM
Forget the 7th round pick. Most 7th round picks don't make an NFL team. So the question you have to ask yourself is if you would trade a 5th round pick in order to move up 17 spots in the draft (79th to 62nd) and move from the 3rd round into the 2nd round. The answer is yes. Redskins used the 3rd round pick from Dolphins to select Leonard Hankerson.

Ooooweeee... I am peeing in my panties. This is so funny. Bouncey was always a funny boy. He made me peeeeee in my panties many a days. I always wondered why my classroom had such a nasty smell to it. Giggle...it was my wet panties. Bouncey, you such a bad boy. Back to your corner. No peeing now. Only I can do that.
Posted by: NastyTeacher | April 29, 2011 at 11:41 PM
OMG.
8 picks
1 on pouncey - 7 left.
A 3rd, 5th and 7th on Thomas. Granted, that 3rd, 5th and 7th was traded for a second. We still spent the 3rd, 5th and 7th on Thomas leaving us with 4 picks.
We started with 8.
We have 4 left.
We have spent 4 picks so far. We spent 1 on Pouncey, so how many did we spend on Thomas?
Not being funny, but I think you guys owe me an apology.
8 picks.
4 left.
Where did the 4 picks go?
1 went on Pouncey, so the other 3 had to go on...............
So please just apologize and I'll shut up.
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 11:42 PM
the top 3 for us tomorrow:
dj williams
edmond gates
virgil green
if gone then it's
ricky stanzi
bilal powell
tawain jones
Posted by: dm1 dolphan | April 29, 2011 at 11:42 PM
Serg,
Your trying to back track to save face you dumb *&^%
I never said we lost 3 picks on Thomas.
Apologize for your ignorance or do I have to go back and copy and paste my statement.
You actually called me childish? I said Thomas cost us 3 picks and you know it.
Apology please.
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 11:45 PM
Ireland needs to show me something on Saturday! So far, I have us grading out about a C (maybe a C+) compared to the other teams in the draft. Where's the SPEED? We were promised it! Haven't seen it yet!
Posted by: Tracy474 | April 29, 2011 at 11:48 PM
SERG,
WHEN IT COMES TO THINKING, ACADEMICS, OR ALMOST ALL REASONING CONCEPTS OF THE BRAIN WE ALL HAVE TOUCHES OF DYSLEXIA IN ONE PHASE OR THE OTHER.
IM GUILTY OF IT IN CERTAIN SOCIAL AREAS OF MY BRAIN. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS IM VERY DIFFICULT TO GET ALONG WITH. WHERE THE SAME CONDITIONS OTHER MAY CONSIDER AS NOTHING.
JUST BECAUSE POUNCEY EXPRESSES A CERTAIN NUMERICAL SITUATION DIFFERENTLY THAN SAY ANOTHER. IT DOESNT MAKE HIM DUMB. HE MAY JUST EXPRESS IT DIFFERENTLY SO YOU HAVE TO LISTEN A LITTLE HARDER.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:48 PM
Lol, this is ridiculous. There is NOT two ways to look at it. Started with 8 picks, ended up with 6. We gave up 2 picks to acquire Thomas. End of story
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:35 PM
We don't have 6 left. We have 4 left.
We started with 8
We now have 4.
Pouncey cost 1
Thomas cost 3
What part is confusing you?
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 11:48 PM
sjbytes: not necessarily. What if we had our original picks and were able to pick the following:
3rd: Hankerson
4th: Todman
5th: Taiwan Jones
I think I'd rather have those 3 rather than just Thomas + 4th rounder
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:48 PM
If Stanzi is there tomorrow in the fourth round the Dolphins better snag him. I live an hour from Iowa City and have Iowa season tix. He can play at a high level if his flaws are fixed. He just needs adjustments in his mechanics and quit forcing the play or throw when there is not one. All his flaws are correctable. He reminds me of Tom Brady at Michigan. Same flaws that the Pats corrected. I saw Brady in college and thought he would never be an NFL starter. Wrong!!!
Posted by: Scooter | April 29, 2011 at 11:49 PM
4TH RD EDMUND GATES:WO,KR,PR
6TH RD LEE SMITH:TE
7TH RD MARIO FANNIN:RB BIG & FAST
ALL SUB 4.4 SPEED
7TH RD OLB HOPEFULLY HIDDEN GEM
Posted by: BOONEDOG | April 29, 2011 at 11:49 PM
YOU SEE, POUNCEY'S MAIN ARGUMENT IS WE "SPENT 3 PICKS ON THOMAS". THERE'S NOTHING DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT BECAUSE THATS EXACTLY WHAT WE DID. LOL..........
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:50 PM
i would have thought that most of the guys here would have wanted edmond gates in the 4th.
Posted by: dm1 dolphan | April 29, 2011 at 11:51 PM
Pouncey: Thomas doesnt cost 3 picks. He IS a pick
If I give you $3 and you give me $1 back, then I'm only down $2
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:52 PM
Evidently I'm a glass half full guy. I was perfectly happy waiting to see which TE we get with the 79th pick. Then they blew my mind again.
I guess I was assuming we would resign Ronnie or Ricky and sign a FA RB. Looking at it more optimisticly they'll probably still sign a veteran and we'll have a rookie with fresh legs.
Would have been surprised if this regime hit on a stud with our 5th and 7th anyway.
At this point i would give away a few more of them...2 or 3..lol..to get DJ Williams.
Posted by: DolFan Rick | April 29, 2011 at 11:52 PM
GET VETRAN QB IN FREE AGENCY
IF HENNE FAILS AGAIN NEXT YR DO ALL WE CAN TO TRADE UP & GET ANDREW LUCK EVERY PIC IF NEED BE
Posted by: BOONEDOG | April 29, 2011 at 11:52 PM
I had Thomas in one of my mocks.
That's not the problem I have DB. I don't really have a problem with Pouncey.
The problem I have is Ireland spending the overall 15 and then 3 more on Thomas. 4 picks for these two players is not good value in mu opinion.
If these other guys cant do math or want to back track and twist my word, so be it. I was right. Pouncey cost us 1 pick and Thomas cost us 3.
Posted by: Pouncey | April 29, 2011 at 11:53 PM
POUNCEY,
THE TWO EXTRA PICKS ASIDE. DO YOU LIKE THOMAS IF WE HAD SPENT ONLY 1 PICK ON HIM?
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:53 PM
Fill me in on Edmond Gates, not familiar with him
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:54 PM
POUNCEY YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. WE BURNT 4 PICKS TO LAND ONLY TWO PLAYERS.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 29, 2011 at 11:56 PM
I was a 10 yo boy growing up in miami when the dolphins lost their first super bowl to the cowboys. I was hooked! Then they won the next 2 championships and I have been a fan ever since, now 50 yo. The last few years have been depressing, right? I really thought Parcells would return us to glory, but I guess not. The draft hasn't played out like I hoped, but Pouncey and Thomas might turn out to be great, and we still have free agency to pick up a veteran QB. KEEP HOPE. GO FINS!!
Posted by: 72dolfan | April 29, 2011 at 11:57 PM
wow.....this message board sucks...People bickering....What is the next position we have to fill guys? I'm thinking SS, or DL?
Posted by: eh | April 29, 2011 at 11:57 PM
boonedog, if we suck enough again, we might just get Luck-y pun intended.
Posted by: eh | April 29, 2011 at 11:58 PM
Just looked up Gates. I wouldnt mind that pick
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 29, 2011 at 11:58 PM

Posted by: BOONEDOG | April 29, 2011 at 11:59 PM
I left an hour ago and you guys are still trying to figure out all the arithmetic permutations of 1,2, and 3? Geez, forget it already, spending two, giving up three or any other variation, its irrelevent.
#4 virgil or dj if available.
Posted by: 0x80 | April 30, 2011 at 12:00 AM
I have no problem giving up the 5th and 7th. We actually did petty good as we didn't swap 2nds, we swapped our 3rd for their second.
My concern is the player. Would have felt better if it was Leshore or even DJ Williams or Randall Cobb. I sure hope Thomas is the real deal.
Posted by: DolFan Rick | April 30, 2011 at 12:00 AM
POUNCEY,
PROBLEM IS WITH THE THOMAS DEAL WE COULD HAVE HAD 2 GOOD PLAYERS INSTEAD OF ONLY 1. IM NOT COUNTING THE 7TH RD PICK AS A GOOD PLAYER BECAUSE THEY ARE USUALLY DEVELOPMENTAL PS PLAYERS.
BUT WITH A 3RD AND A 5TH YOU CAN LAND 2 GOOD PLAYERS.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 30, 2011 at 12:00 AM
Garbag
If I give you 3 dollars and you give me one back and I spend that one on a Cup Cake, that cup cake still cost me 3 dollars.
NO, I'm not saying Thomas is a cup cake.

Does one get any satisfaction of arguing on a message board? What's going on tomorrow? SS TE or DL?
Posted by: eh | April 30, 2011 at 12:08 AM
DolFan Rick,
If a guy is guy is #62(2 slots from 3rd rd) he's a 3rd rd tweener. Chances are greater the only time he'll see a pro bowl is if he's sitting in front of a tv watching the same as us.
Thats why Im so suspect abotu trading back into the "2nd rd" for a player like this. It would have made more sense to do it for Mallet.
Mallet is 1st rd talent that slid into the 3rd. We all know it didnt happen over talent concerns. This type of trade makes far more sense for Mallet than a guy Hugely unlikely to ever see a pro bowl.
Posted by: DyingBreed | April 30, 2011 at 12:08 AM
LMAO@0x80
Posted by: DolFan Rick | April 30, 2011 at 12:09 AM
it would be nice to get gates in the fourth but i wonder how many of the teams that are picking before us are thinking the same thing. we need the speed and a guy like gates who is capable of taking it the distance every time he touches the ball gives us the speed at the wr position we lack.
at tight end, though, i'm thinking julius thomas from portland state. another b-ball player converting to tight end. good blocker and really good hands.
