« Fins privately compare Pouncey to Stephenson | Main | Jeff Ireland has his say -- all of it right here »

Live draft blog begins here, now

Day Two of the draft is about to begin and two questions dominate:

Will the Dolphins trade into the second round?

As to getting into the second round, I have serious doubts the Dolphins will use their limited ammo to get into the round. That is obviously just a prediction, but I have a hard time believing Miami will invest the kind of capital necessary to come from nowhere to the the second.

That would require the Dolphins giving up their 2012 first round pick.

If the idea is for them to use their third round pick to try to move up into the second round, they still would have to yield either their fourth-round selection or perhaps the third rounder plus a high pick next year. Again, that is a prohibitive price.

I'm not saying the Dolphins would never pay such a price but ...

“I think you can always get ammunition," Ireland said yesterday abou tthe prospects of moving up. "I mean, look what Atlanta did. You always have ammunition I think. You can use your picks up until 2014 if you wanted to. We had a couple players on the board that if they fell to a certain spot then we might have jumped up, but we didn’t choose to do that.”

You don't mortgage your draft for a guy that probably would"ve been there at 79. Absolutely HUGE brain fart on Ireland's part. It scares me at what they may do in FA since he runs a brutal draft.

The Dolphins are a JOKE!!!!!!! HA HA HA HA!!!!
Laughing stock of the NFL! Shows Ireland is the perfect GM for the other JOKE: Steven Ross!

Lets go for that run first CRAP philosophy that doesn't work!!!

I'm done with this piece of crap team. Give me a haller when Ireland and Sparano are GONE and they hire someone who knows how to win in today's NFL.

See ya.

3 picks for 17 spots

but wait armando there is more

for a 4.63 fumbling maching that runs bad routes out of the backfield

i thought the pouncey pick was bad

that makes this look like sheer genius

You want to know where I am?

I'm trying to find a way to like this. Having a very, very hard time.

I mean, I get the need for RB, but where is the speed? Is he better than Ronnie Brown?

He didn't come cheap, that's for sure.

AUSTIN ALL MIAMI FANS DO IS CRY CRY CRY NOTHING IS EVER GOOD FOR THEM I AM ALMOST EMBARRESED TO BE AMONG THE SAME GROUP....WAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Our "second round pick" got stabbed by his beeatch last week... great...

The comparison Thomas-Hillard is fair, DD.

Absolutely not worth giving up three picks. OMG, what were they thinking?

SCREW YOU YOU BABY

You guys have got to keep in mind that with every qb that gets picked high, the price for Kolb, Orton, Flynn, and Palmer drops. And, landing spots for someone like Vince Young dries up as well. Think BIG picture, this actually isn't the worse thing in the world. And btw, the 2 picks so far are 2 starters, on offense. Not horrible

Pouncey you must be a jet fan beacuse you cannot read...I never said Thomas was Csonka. In fact I said he wasnt Csonka!! As for pouncey being stephensen I never said that and dont believe that to be so either. So crawl back under your green lil rock and cry because yall havent won ANYTHING for 42 years!!!

This is a head scratcher. We could have used a TE more than this guy.

Now we have a 4 and two 7's to build that dynamic explosive, offense Ross asked for.

Yawn.

Guess I'm the only Big XII follower. Thomas destroyed that Conference and he would have done the same in your beloved SEC, ACC, Big 10, or whoever you are partial to.

Thomas is trash. Seen him play at KState for 2yrs and he has done nothing noteworthy. Slow....no lateral agility ...he could seriously be a fullback. They would have been better off keeping an aging Ronnie Brown. Todman would have offered more speed..better hands and good size. The Fins are ensuring that they have the 1st pick in next years draft by tanking this years. Pray for Andrew Luck to stay healthy this year.

He would be gone long before 5th. Obviously whiners never saw him play at K State.

I would have kept both Ronnie and Ricky...theres still plenty there...and they are experienced and CHEAP....get Williams in FA or Bradshaw....this is a HUGE INVESTMENT

Youve paid double for the car you want...itd better be a BUGATTI...super risky move

The consequences of not having a 2nd round pick are brutal.

I'd be surprised if Taiwan Jones or DJ Williams are still there in the 4th round.

the consequence of having ireland sparano are brutal

big mondo ronnie brown aint it man. hes a great bust for a #2

bidalfy

Miami believes he will be able to pass out of the wildcat. I belive that is why they used all this picks on him.

This is a good pick. Has anyone seen any tape of this kid? He is multi-dimensional and can do alot of things for an offense. I have a feeling they draft a speedy back in the later rounds and resign Ronnie. This guy is different than the Pat White pick. He is not a gimmick player. Remember when people didnt know how Misi was? That turned out ok chill people!

Armando just read my mind.. mid tricks again.. lol

but seriously.. I reserve judgement until I see him play.. i don't know enough about him... but with Taiwan Jones out there and now no third round pick.. we watch all the other options go out the window..

I don't feel positive about the draft for the Phins so far... feels like a Parcel's draft.

where is the SPEEEEEEEEEEEEED we are looking for????

2 major needs....speed and better QB play....so far not addressed....

When you guys watch his highlights on youtube you should immediately notice three things....1) he never ever ever holds the ball with two hands nor changes hands....not one single time 2) he runs extremely high , like higher than I have every seen anyone run, 3) he NEVER EVER EVER EVER out runs anybody EVER....look at these MASSIVE holes he is able to run through......you can drive a semi truck through these holes.......and he out runs nobody

This regime is a fuc*ing waste....

Good pick-we don't need some scat back-Thomas has the size to be a featured NFL back-he would not have been available that much longer-he was rated the #2-3rd best back on a lot of draft boards. just be glad Speilman is gone at least.

IF DON SHULA WAS COACHING THE TEAM YOU ALL WOULD WHINE!!!!!

Misi was crap too...So was every player not named LONG or DAVIS...Screw these guys

Not much point following the rest of tonight since we don't pick till tomorrow now. What happended to the sacred mantra of not trading picks they always trumpet?

In all honesty he is the type of back this regime loves, big and physical. IMO all the talk of speed from the owner down to the GM and coaches was a smokescreen to throw other teams off. This guy is a bruiser and fits what they like doing. Unfortunately for most fans it does not sit well.

Let's get real here....who would be playing first team from the Phins in some of the elite teams/organizations out there? Long,Wake,Marshall, anybody else? This team/organization is a patchwork of rejects and mediocre draftees. Sad... but true.

Still, Armando, all these Dolphins picks(2) will be proven soon. Then, we will be able to judge more freely.

dln265...I only caught Thomas once. It was against UCLA. I think he went over 200 yards rushing, caught some passes. And was a 1 man wrecking crew. This is the same UCLA defense that shut down Texas 2 weeks later, and had 2 defenders drafted in the second round... I hope he works out. but it seems like a lot of picks to give up to move 17 spots. I think there is some more movement yet.

he reminds me of curtis martin a little. I trust these guys to pick rbs. Parcells picked good backs both at the jets and in dallas

stop hating. at least wait and see how the rest of the draft goes before you start trashing people. (and personaly, i kinda like the pick)

Lots of posters just got called out on their ignorance after the Daniel Thomas pick. Talk about taking the opinion of the masses with a grain of salt. This is pathetic. If you need to ask "who?" or state "we drafted a no-name" after the Daniel Thomas selection, then you probably had no business commenting in the first place.

Cry babies......most draft nicks have Thomas as 2nd/3rd best rb out there. Just because you've never heard of him.....really just means you don't know college ball. I'm guessing Mallett will still be there when we pick in the 4th....nobody wants this guy.

He would have been there at our pick. A slow RB when we need speed. Ross how much proof do you need that we need a new FO. Other better players on board. What about TE? This guy is Ronnie.

we didn;t mortgage the draft. We basically gave up a third. The 7th rounder is meaning less. We got one in suplemental. He was the 3rd best running back on a lot of boards. chill

loving Boomers tough blunt questions to Marivn

cry, cry me a river
Cry me a river-er
Cry me a river
Cry me a river-er, yea yea

I am no longer a dolphins fan. This is the single worst regime ever! They have no clue how to manage players, and most specifically a draft. We've had a glaring need for FAST playmakers for a decade and we draft a center and a big, lumbering, fumble-prone RB that WE TRADE UP FOR!?!!? I am so angry. How does the owner allow this?? Cuz he's an idiot too. They essentially just told the owner F**k YOU, we don't care about the excitement you and the fans want, we want to build a 1970 team!!

I saw this guy play as they play colorad every year. he's solid. He needs to bulk up a little bit

Dolphins drafted him cause they want to use him out of the WILDCAT!

HAHHAHHAH!

Are you kidding me?!!

SLOW & FUMBLES.

Good job Ireland!!

I give up with this organization. I DO not understand the thinking behind this in ANY way. I can't wait for the year to start just so that we can "fall forward fast" and this whole thing to be gutted out!

i believe thomas will be a very good player, an immediate starter, and definitely an upgrade over what they have.

Round 4...TE or ILB?

like it or not - Thomas is a Fin.. let's move on and hope the team made the right choice.

What a stupid move by the Dolphins. 3 picks to move up and snag I guy I'd have hated them taking in the 3rd round.

At least he's so slow his fumbles won't roll our of our 3 yards in a cloud of dust offense's range.

crybabies

STFU!

3 freaking picks to move up and get a slow footed fumbling machine.

what are you smoking you freaking idiot

Even armando is speechless.

we could have stayed put, kept our picks and took Hunter, taiwan jones, demarco murray

how freaking dum are you

just STFU

Any chance of comming back to 3rd round for mallet?

Nflbs, he is a JOKE compared to Demarco Murray. And he will not move double teams away from Marshall. Mayock said Vernon Gholston was the one, so screw Mayock.

You keep on harping on 3 picks...it was a 3rd, 5th and 7th...for a 2nd...what would we have a chance to get with a 5th and 7th. Please for Ireland to make this move Thomas had to be rated very high on our board. Mayock had him #3 amongst RB's. Forget Ricky and Ronnie. They were gone already and have not been good for over a year. This is an excellent move. Should make the entire Offense better by giving Henne options...not to mention the wildcat implications. Its a gamble and thats all we can ask for. Gambling teams usually get one right every now and then. when they do they wind up winning Super Bowls!!!

I have to go write my column now. I'll be back in a few with a new post and more information.

Check back.

little amondo, Marc, Chase, Dyingbreed, you are in charge. As usual

They pick a player at a spot where he is rated Waa! Waa!

I like the selection but paid too much. A 3rd and 5th should have been plenty. Or a 3rd and two 7th. Paid too much.. better be worth it.

Go Phins!!!

They may really want someone in the third- trade away the other three picks to move back into the third??????? I dont f-g know man!!!!

big armondo doesnt pay no attention to me no more

Image..well said.

SHOW SOME CLASS AND QUIT WHINING!!!!

And kudos to Mr. Ross for letting Ireland do his thing.

5th and 7th round picks rarely yield high players. so i look at it like swapping a 3rd for a 2nd. doubt the dolphins would have done this unless they believed another team would take thomas in the intervening 17 picks.
