Round 1 newsy recap from Jeff Ireland

Here is the latest from the Dolphins and general manager Jeff Ireland following the end of the first round:

1. Mike Pouncey will start out as a center. He is penciled in as a center on Ireland's depth chart. "He's big, he's tough, he's disciplined, he's smart. He's very athletic ... I can't say enough good things about the kid."

2. Ireland talked to receiver Brandon Marshall on Thursday and might meet with him or, at the least, talk to him again Friday. "I know enough of the details. I reached out to him today because I was able to.  We'll talk a little more tomorrow. Right now I know enough to be dangerous, I guess you could say. We're going to continue to follow that situation. Until I get a chance to sit down and talk to him face to face, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions."

Marshall last week was stabbed in the abdomen by his wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall. She was arrested. He was admitted to the hospital, treated and released. It is the second known domestic violence episode for the couple. It is the ninth domestic violence episode involving Marshall since 2005.

3. The Dolphins didn't have an opportunity to trade out of the No. 15 overall selection, according to Ireland.  "The phones weren't ringing so we took the pick," Ireland said. "When the phone doesn't ring you kind of lose your leverage if you're calling around. 'Do you want this pick, do you want this pick.' That's not the way I do it. They have to want the pick before you can trade. And the phone wasn't ringing."

4. Ireland seems very confident about this pick. He had no problem comparing Mike Pouncey to his identical twin brother Maurkice Pouncey. Maurkice was a starter and Pro Bowl player for the Steelers.

"There's a lot of things that both remind me of each other," Ireland said. "They remind me of each other so I didn't feel like I was going to be getting too much different than Maurkice. When you're watching Mike, he's got things to work on as all rookies do. But I think you're looking at pretty much the same type of player."

5. The Dolphins are known for doing the safe thing over the bold thing. Guilty as charged, if that's the way you look at it. "I think it's a good, safe pick," Ireland said. "I know what I'm getting. I know exactly what I'm getting with Pouncey. I feel pretty good we've solidified an offensive line here."

5. Players will likely be around camp on Friday. There is supposed to be a rookie camp next week. The schedule is not set in stone because it is all subject to the legal wranglings of the NFL and the, ahem, trade association.

6. Yes, the Dolphins are aware of the concerns about Pouncey's shotgun snaps.

"They do a lot of things with their center that most teams don't do," Ireland said of the University of Florida. "They pull him a lot. So what you see is when he's trying to pull out in space he's getting out so quick that he's doing something with the ball. I don't know that we'd be doing much of that as Florida did. But he improved at it over the season."

7. Ireland, confident at this press conference, started by saying, "The best way to start this is for me to say, 'Awwwright Miami.' I don't say it as well as Jim Mandich but my heart's out to his family."

Classy.

8. My column on what I think of the Pouncey pick is here. Please help a brother out and check it out. It makes me feel like I'm not working in vain. I also might talk you off the angry, Dolphins should have drafted a quarterback ledge.

i'm sure we address our qb needs in free agency. after all, henne was benched mid-season by a coaching consensus in favor of a one-armed injured penne. that event pretty much says it all. henne has to hope for the back-up role at best.

I thoughtInconito was signed to play center???? That is where HE says is his best fit.

Horrible pick...

grade F

goog question at 9:10. incognito is supposed to be our center because he couldnt pull at guard. now we draft pouncey at center? what happens to incognito?

How do we improve our offense from last year? Most teams would draft playmakers, skilled position players. Dolphins hire a OC who had an even worse ranked offense last year, then pass on a stud RB in Ingram and take Pouncey. The Florida Marlins score more points than we will next year. Lets keep the trend going, with our 3rd round pick lets select a FB, then with our 4th round pick maybe we can get long snapper, 5th round we can get an oversized slow TE with hands of stone.

This run first pass second philosophy has me sick to my stomach. It's obvious this regime has no clue how to build a winning team in today's NFL. I applaude the Falcons, Titans, Vikings and Jaguars for having the guts to be bold and pick their guy, instead of playing it safe. We need a franchise QB. We will never get one with Ireland and Sparano. They only care about big, slow players and running the ball. We did it to perfection agains the Colts where we controlled the clock for over 40 minutes!!! Oh wait.. we LOST that game....
No more season tickets or going to games for me until this regime is out.

Yes Boulder. They watched him only to determine that he looks like his brother, in appearance.

We could have had Matt Ryan. Nothing else needs to be said. FU Parcells.

Seems like we are trying to do everything we can to lose next year so we can get the first overall pick to get QB A.Luck.

FU parcells and that philosophy for real!

OK CLASS HAS BEGUN

The last time a Parcells coached or managed team won a championhip was in what...1991...a game they should have lost if Norwood would have hit that field goal. So its been 20 years since Parcells had a championship team. The game has changed, and Ireland and Sparano need to change or be fired next year. Ball control with mistake free playing won't win you games. The 1991 Giants team today wouldn't even win 9 games.

FIRST OF ALL...

ARMANDO

4 YEARS OF COMING UP HERE AND NOT ONCE HAVE YOU SAID ANYTHING NICE ABOUT THE FINS.

HOWEVER YOY PRAISE THE PATS EVERY CHANCE YOU GET.

FOR ALL THE FOOTBALL UNINFORMED ON THIS SITE....YOU WIN GAMES IN THE TRENCHES. PERIOD. GIVE ME ONE NAME OF A PLAYOFF TEAM WITH A BAD O LINE....CANT DO IT. WE ARE NOT SUPERBOWL CONTENDERS BUT WE ARE PUTTING YOUNG SOLID PIECES TOGETHER FOR A FORMIDABLE TEAM IN THE FUTURE...IM NOT JUST A DOLPHIN FAN THIS YEAR I WILL BE A DOLPHIN FAN IN 30 YEARS....NOTHING WRONG WITH BUILDING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. AND YOU JUST WATCH HENNE WITH SOLID O LINE PLAY AND GOOD RUNNING GAME WILL BE A DIFFERENT PLAYER.

They had no trade partners, what were they supposed to do? Take a shot a QB way too early like the Titans or Vikings? Then, if he didn't pan out, people would be having a melt down b/c we didn't pick this guy or trade up for that guy. If there were "can't miss" qb's in this draft, more teams would of made bigger moves to get them, not just Jax. Just b/c a guy plays the QB position and is entering the NFL draft, doesn't mean he has to be drafted. Well done Miami!!!!

Greg Cote puts it best:
"This is a franchise trying to take big steps to make up big ground in the AFC East, where Tom Brady and the New England Patriots rule and Rex Ryan's New York Jets are rapping at the castle door. Miami is across the moat trying to figure a way across.

Is this pick the best they could do to get there?

This felt like the kind of tinkering first-round pick made by smooth-sailing teams that think they are contenders, maybe a piece or two away."

SIMMER DOWN SIMMER DOWN.....

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS UPSET ABOUT.

THIS DRAFT CLASS REALLY SUCKS AND YOU KNOW THAT.

TEAMS WHO WANTED PLAY MAKERS WELL THERE ONLY 2.

A.J GREEN AND JULIO JONES.

SOME MAY SAY LOCKER WOULD HAVE BEEN THE 1st QB OFF THE BOARD LAST YEAR.

OK I SAY TO YOU WHO CAME OUT LAST YEAR.

THIS YEARS QB CLASS HAS SO MUCH BUST AROUND THEM THAT WHY WOULD YOU TAKE THAT CHANCE.

AND IF YOU DO THEN YOU GO AFTER CAM NEWTON.

I DON't THINK THIS WAS A SAFE MOVE I THINK IT WAS A GREAT MOVE.

THE ONLY THING THEY COULD HAVE DONE BETTER WAS GET

PRINCE AMUKAMARA

I THINK HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER THERE

The Game has changed because the rules have changed, and you should try to follow the Rules.

Now we have to root for New Orleans to play NE in next year's SB. That way the Pats' 1st rounders will be the 31st & 32nd picks...Basically 2nd rounders...

Justin.....WHWN DOES THE BUILDING STOP????

ITS BEEN FOUR YEARS.....

BTW....
"I think it's a good, safe pick," Ireland said

those are irelands words....not the fans.....so you can use them too.....

You only run when you are ahead(statistical fact). Not that you cannot go against it but you need big tools to do it, great pulling guards and center and excellent RB's(see Lombardi's Packers, Shula's SB teams). As of now, Miami does not qualify as such.

DD, this is for you, from an article in todays Herald:

"Of the players the Dolphins summoned to South Florida, one of the most interesting stories is Montana defensive back Jimmy Wilson, who spent 25 months in jail before being acquitted in the June 2007 shooting death of his aunt’s boyfriend. The Dolphins flew him in last week."

KRIS...

OK IT WAS A SAFE PICK.

BUT I STILL THINK HE WAS THE SECOND BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION IT NEVER DOES.

WE WASTED LATE PICKS ON OUR O-LINE BUT ONLY ONE HIGH PICK.

WE TRIED TO DO PATCH WORK HERE AND THERE BUT I THINK THEY HAVE A LONG TERM STARTER NOW.

While other teams take chances to get talented players(Jacksonville), Miami continues to sit back & take whoever falls in their lap. It's amazing that Jacksonville, who is about as good as we are, can be bold in the draft & we cannot.

Any Center or Guard could have been had in free agency when it begins. Allot of younger & very talented O-linemen there. Not to mention, already proven. Ireland talked a good offseason game but, his actions did not back it up. This team drafts scared & plays scared.

What good is a guard when you don't have any rb's? What good is a guard when you have an erratic QB. For god sakes, you have Jake Long, the best LT in football & he hasn't been a deciding factor in a game.

The pick was exactly what I expected, sadly. Safe, guarded, & will not help what ails this team. 7-9, here we come again!

How many O-linemen do the Dolphins need to trade for, draft or just sign....before they get it right? How much cap money has to be wasted? I have nothing against Pouncey, but does he score points, does he add speed to the team? Unless the Dolphins get bold and trade into the second round to either grab a QB or WR this draft looks to be very vanilla...again.

0x80:

NOW THAT'S A SAD STORY

A YOUNG MAN SPENT 18 MONTHS OF HIS LIFE IN JAIL.

IF HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG THAT'S TIME HE CAN NEVER GET BACK.

JOE SCHMOE :

I'M ALL FOR MOVING UP ALSO BUT NOT FOR GABBERT.

They jumped on Christian Ponder pretty quick, didn't they? I think he and Gabbert are immediate starters in the NFL. We'll see, if there is a Season.

Justin, do you REALLY think teams rebuild the same position EVERY year for FOUR years? That's not rebuilding. It's an exercise in futility!

They keep building in the trenches, why? Because for 3 consecutive years, they haven't been able to assemble ONE.

You name me one other team that has had as many O line transactions the last 3 years. Just one. Just to prove the point.

WE HAVE A CENTER WHO PLAYED AGINST TOP NOTCH PLAYERS.

THE BEST DT's COLLEGE HAD TO OFFER THE BEST NT's COLLEGE HAD TO OFFER.

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING AT?

NUMBERS?

YOU NEED TO START LOOING AT WHO THEY PLAY ALSO.

I DON'T MEAN THAT THEY PLAY IN THE SEC OR THE BIG EAST BUT THE PEOPLE THE COACHES THE SYSTEMS.

Ok guys Im finished being sick over the pick.

"IT WAS EXTREMELY BALLSY OF IRELAND TO MAKE THE POUNCEY PICK IN THE FACE OF DOLFANS EXPECTING A HUGE BOLT OF LIGHTNING INSTEAD."

Before I first got on the ingram then Mallet bandwagon. I myself, was saying we needed to spend another 1st rd pick on the oline. Outside of Jake Long, the highest pick spent was a 3rd rd'er on Jerry and he wasnt fully ready his first season but should be much improved this one.

This line isnt going to be where we need it to be bringing in injury prone Groves and Smiley's. Then drafting Murphys and Andrew Gardners. Plus adding other nfl teams disposable tampons.

Fellow fin fans I agree this isnt a "sexy" pick, but you all have to agree it was a very ballsy and neccessary pick. As Mandich himself would say:

AAAAAAAAAright Miami!

Kudos to Ireland and company for doing the right think and doing the right thing for the franchise rather than listening to the fanbase. Listen to the fanbase long enough and pretty soon you'll be sitting with them. The easy would have been to REACH for Ryan Mallett HOPING he would be the answer. They didn't do that and kudos to them.

Guys want to blame this regime for the last 36 years but the reality is they just drafted ANOTHER solid player. Add that to Long, Davis, Smith, Hartline, Jerry, Misi, Bess, Carpenter and Fields and hopefully we'll see guys like Odrick, Merling, Langford and Clemons develp further and they have already upgraded a 1-15 talent base.

Gusy want to roast them for the pick but none of know yet what their plans include for the rest of the draft and FA. Like a good painting you can never judge it until all the work is done.

Schmoe,

I hear you, but it was a dilemma either way you look at it. Do you just abandon fixing the line or take yet another stab at it? In 2009 our running game steam rolled over everyone. In 2010 with Grove gone and Berger in, our running game was pathetic.

Bottom line...if this pick does indeed FINALLY solidify the oline into a top 5 oline, then it was worth it. If we have to flounder around with more trades and picks for the oline, then they just plain failed at what they were trying to do and don't deserve another chance.

Joe Shmoe,

Exactly why the Pouncey pick makes great sense. Do we want to still be trying to rebuild the oline two years from now?

We took a HUGE step toward ebding all of that bs by using a #1 pick on Pouncey last night.

AAAALRIGHT MIAMI!!!!!!!!!

The only way I can understand this pick is if Ireland has some info that there will be no Season this year.

CraigM,

I hated it last night as much as anyone. But now that the dust has settled I give Ireland HUGE kudos. It was very BALLSY of him in the wake of greatly anticipated fanbase criticism.

My hat's off to Ireland!

JOE SCHMOE:

THEY KEPT CAREY AND BROUGHT IN LONG.

WHO ELSE DID THEY GET THAT ANY OF US EVEN KNEW PRIOR TO THEM GETTING HERE.

I'M SURE WE ALL KNOW GOOD O-LINEMAN NAMES THROUGH OUT THE LEAGUE.

THEY're GETTING A BUNCH OF NO NAMES.

SPENDING LATE ROUND PICKS ON THE LINE INSTEAD OF FAST PLAYMAKERS.

THE ONLY REASON WE GOT INCOGNITO IS BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE SEEMED TO GIVE UP ON HIM.

WE GOT HIM AT BASMENT BOTTOM PRICES.

BUT WE ALL HEARD OF HIM BEFORE HE GOT HERE.

NOW WE GET MANKINS IN THE FREE AGENCY.

I BET WE WILL HAVE THE BEST O-LINE IN THE LEAGUE.

BACK-UPS ARE GAME TESTED EVERYTHING WILL GO SMOOTH.

Oh man hahahaha! Now people are quoting Greg Cote? rofl. Stop all of the whining all ready. We knew they were going to take Ingram or Pouncey. Every writer in North America told us so before the draft so how is this a surprise to some of you. WE HAVE NO CENTER. Center is one of the top three most important positions on any football team. We got a good one who has a chance to be great. We will get a QB and RB in free agency and through trade. Not understanding why people are crying like little girls but I guess that's your right, maybe your panties are too tight today?

Until we get a pro bowl caliber QB we will never have a winning season again.

Those not understanding this pick dont understand we've been tinkering with this damn oline for 4yrs now.

Do you still wanna be doing this bulls*it another 2-3yrd from now? Case closed.

Who do we realistically have a shot at today? 47 picks before our next turn. Do we go RB,TE,or QB?

I see a few bloggers here are still referring to Pouncey as a Guard. I myself thought that he was being taken as a Guard. Now that Ireland has clarified he does indeed see him as a true NFL center, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Just because you fail at building an oline, doesn't mean you quit, there is no success without failure. In the world of science they call it trial and error. Lots of errors come before success. Granted, at some point you have to achieve success or change the leaders. This FO is at that point this season. We will see.

Btw guys,

EVERYBODY wants to sing the praises of the Patriots and their draft success. I looked at their last TEN years of drafting. It is NO better than ours. Take a good look at it. What was clearly was that very often they did not have a full arsenal of picks and were often missing a second or third round pick. They've drafted 2 offensive linemen in the last 7 years and 6 in the top three rounds over the last 10 years. I don't see anyone saying 'they can't get it right. They keep messing with the line. Do these guys know what they are doing?'. Don't take my word for it, actually go back and look at it with an open mind. Most of you won't because you only believe what you want to believe.

What the Patriots have is one of the best QBs to ever play the game and one the best coaches to ever coach. They have stability and don't keep changing everything up every couple of years. They don't give up multiple draft picks for questionable talent and guys who have a history of domestic violence. They don't waste top ten picks on kick-returners and they don't throw picks around like it's spare change and instead 'save' and stockpile for the future. They don't take crazy chances like picking 'big question marks' like Mallett in the middle of the round. They need to start thinking about developing a replacement for Brady and I don't see them saying 'let's take a chance on this guy because we have EXTRA picks'. They make EVERY pick count....nice to see the regime is getting that picture, at long last!

The reason we made 3 STRAIGHT SB APPEARANCES in the early 70's is because we had THE BEST DAMN OLINE IN THE NFL.

This is now a young and very talented oline. Lots of youth and we're going to be good for a long time to come.

Now we can began wheeling and dealing to add the SHINNING PIECES!

That should have said 'the Patriots have drafted 2 offensive linemen in the first round in the last seven years'. It doesn't seem to be a problem with them. I don't see them going out and taking too many chances.

I mean at least whine about something worth whining about. The problem isn't Pouncey. The problem is that Parcells said (when he arrived in FLA) they were going to build from the trenches out. "The game is won in the trenches". That's great and correct but 4 drafts later and we're still using 1st round picks trying to build a line that should already be solidified. We should be using those picks at this point for explosive play makers. Don't blame Ireland for trying to fix Parcells mistakes and don't blame Pouncey for being picked. He will be an awesome player for the Dolphins for years. Unfortunately thanks to Parcells he won't be throwing or catching td passes.

Stephenson, Dwight....2nd rounder

Langer, Jim....cut by the Browns....signed as a free agent by the Dolphins.

Pouncey....15th pick in the 2011 draft.

PLUS DIDN'T THE BILLS GET MARCELL DAREUS.

I THINK I'M GOING TO LIKE TO SEE THAT BATTLE.

POUNCEY HAVE PLAYED THE BEST COLLEGE COACHE'S
3-4 D.

HE'S READY FOR THIS.

HE HAS HIS BROTHER TO HELP TEACH HIM AND PUSH HIM.

I HAVE A FEW BROTHERS AND THAT BROTHERLY COMPETION IS SOMETHING SERIOUS.

HE WILL BE READY FROM DAY 1.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE PROSPECTS OF THIS OLINE WITH 2 #1 DRAFT PICKS ON IT. WE'RE GOING TO BE VERY GOOD FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 8YRS.

PLENTY OF TIME TO ADD A QB THAT DOESNT NEED A GPS TO FIND THE SUPER BOWL!

WITH A GREAT O-LINE WE CAN GET DAN BACK.

OK OK THAT WAS A REACH

i can live with this pick, not original and poss a little high, def the safest for ireland and his career, 6/10 for ingenuity, 9/10 for starter with blue chip potential

maybe we will trade one of our in house ol if fa happens

irelands gonna have to turn up the ingenuity today, if he's got a 2nd/3rd qb he really fancies then he's got to get lucky or trade up and still risk getting a lesser quality rb/te

maybe as some guys have already said this points to a commitment to henne next season with a late rd qb pick and a vet for competition

if so i assume they don't fancy any of this years qb's enough to reach for them and thats fine

i would be disappointed if they trade next years picks to move up unless its for a true star pic

FISHEYPETE,

WE GOT LUCKY TO FIND THE GUYS YOU MENTIONED WE DID. HELL, SEEMS WE TRIED TO FIND THOSE GUYS THE SAME WAY THE LAST 3 YEARS.

THAT'S HOW WE ENDED UP HAVING TO SPEND A 1ST RD PICK ON POUNCEY. IT DIDNT WORK THIS TIME AROUND!

SMILEY, GROVE, MURPHY, ANDREW GARDNER, COWBOY REJECTS.

DAMN GUYS, YOU STILL DONT WANNA STOP BULLS*HITTING WITH THE OLINE?

Many of us wanted excitement, surprise, bold. What we got was predictable, it was an initial let down. With that being said, I have to concede it was a highly sensible pick. Not a reach, not gamble. Safe can be boring and uninspiring, but sometimes safe just happens to be the right call too. Often there is more than one right call, perhaps another pick indeed would have been right too, but right is right, and I can't argue with that.

It's pretty obvious guys, we're trying to follow the current Jets model. Good OL, good defence, average QB and hopefully we get a few weapons too. If we can have a team similar to the Jets we'll have a chance to go to the playoffs every year. After that, anything can happen, as the Jets and Packers showed this year. And before every laments the Packers as the next dynasty, a reminder.....these guys were 10-6 this year and the number 6 seed in the NFC. They got into the playoffs on the last day of the season. I think we'd all be pleased if we got a kick at the can every year.

The Jets have gone to the AFC Championship game the last two years with a very average QB. The reason?....great supporting cast and good coaching. I realize guys on here don't like Sparano but it's not out of the realm of possibility that we could be that team. Let's agree to disagree. The model is right there in front of us. There's a good core in front of us and hopefully if we add a couple more guys in the draft and a couple guys in FA, we'll be all set.

DB, glad you are onside with this pick. Nice to see you are thinking rationally. Guys were looking for the GUY that could erase the last 36 years with that ONE pick. Wasn't going to happen.

Does anyone remember the NATIONAL NEWS pounceys play had at the beginning of the year? My daughter didn't, she's five. What I hate is Ireland is an idiot, sparano is an idiot, daboll is an idiot, and we will not win with any of them. I actually welcome pouncey to the league. And hope we don't pick Colin.

Berger at center just never had a winning ring to it. It kind of felt like Cobbs on returns. Please, please, please find a returner better than Cobbs! How many more years can they go with him as a returner?

IF WE CAN TRADE CROWDER FOR A 3rd AND BOTH 3s FOR A TWO THAT WOULD BE NICE.

IF NOT STAY PUT AND WE CAN GET

D.J WILLIAMS-TE

TAIWAN JONES-RB

EDMOND GATES-WR

STEFEN WISNIESKI C-G(I KNOW YOU DON'T LIKE THIS)

COLIN McCARTHY LB

I'M GOOD WITH ANY OF THEM IN THE 3rd.

The good thing about the Draft and it's picks is that sooner rather than later it will be proven who can play what in the NFL. I say Pouncey will be better utilized as Guard and not as Center. We'll see.
