Draft night live blog begins right here, right now

The NFL draft is finally here and this blog is a-live!

So do the Dolphins go with the primetime pick in this primetime draft? Do they trade back as I've been told they are trying to do? Do they pick a quarterback?

"A quarterback makes sense if and only if they think a FRANCHISE quarterback is there," Dan Marino tweeted today. "Otherwise, I am firm believer in taking the Best Player Available."

So whom would the man once hired to lead the Dolphins franchise -- he quit two weeks later -- consider the franchise quarterbacks in this draft?

"With my CBS gig I spend more time watching the QBs on Sunday so it wouldn't be fair for me to say if a guy is or isn't a franchise QB," Marino followed with another tweet.

The national insider types are reporting there will be a run on QBs in the top 12 picks. We'll see about that. Aside from the QBs, here are some names I'm going to ask you to keep in mind:

Alabama RB Mark Ingram if they do not trade back.

VT RB Ryan Williams if they trade back.

Florida C Mike Pouncey if they do not trade back.

Purdue OLB Ryan Kerrigan if they do not trade back.

Kansas State's Daniel Thomas if they do trade back.

I'm rooting for the trade back. OK, meet me in the comments section. Let's go a-live!

Why is this pick such a shock? Is it because it was so obvious that it offered no suspense? This is a player that is going to play EVERY offensive down. That is huge. Think about it. We could have drafted a situational pass rusher, or a defensive end that may have played on 1/2 to a 1/4 of the downs. My biggest problem would be passing on a cornerback. I have made it well known about how I feel about our nickel package. Who should we have taken that makes anymore sense...My ears are open. Let me say this. These opinions are not personal, nor are they meant to single anyone out.

Quit dickering over the 1st round Pouncey pick. It was a solid anchor draft for our interior line.

I am now more curious to see who we pick in the third...fourth, etc.

WEEK1: MR POUNCEY MEET MR WILFORK!

WEEK1: MR POUNCEY MEET MR WILFORK!

WEEK1: MR POUNCEY MEET MR WILFORK!

IF POUNCEY PASSES THE WEEK 1 WILFORK TEST I'LL JUMP FOR JOY!

DD,

My take is this. Can you please name me a team in the NFL with fewer offensive weapons than the Miami Dolphins? At what point to we start drafting players that can SCORE POINTS and WORRY DEFENSES?

I'm not one that buys into any old late round rb, te or wr will be fine.

Did they not see the Cheese video? When u do the same thing over & over, u get the same results. O line this, O line that. And we still don't WIN games. Who cares if your line goes to the Pro Bowl when ur play off elimanted with 3 games left. We need better Minds in the FO. They Suck!

Unfortunately, I think Wilfork is a heart attack waiting. The poor guy is only good for 3 to 5 plays a game. 369lbs is not healthy

Come on it's Vince Wilfork... The U is going to put the little Gator pup in his place

Armando? 3rd round?

Armando?

henny,

Wilfork will probably be dead 5yrs after he retires!

Bueller?

Hi Cuban! Long time, man. I am a huge Ricky fan so I am biased. I don't think he comes back though.

I think they go DJ Williams (TE) in the 3rd so that pushes them back to the 4th for an RB. LeShoure will be long gone, Taiwan is super fast but lightweight...Ryan Williams will be gone and Daniel Thomas is slow. I like DeMarco Murray in the 3rd and he may last into the 4th if they pick up DJ Williams (TE) in the 3rd. He is sizable enough (6', 215) and very fast (4.38). We still would need a power back and that should be Ricky IMO (unless they can get DeAngelo Williams).

Only thing wrong with our pick was that prince was available really would've been nice to see him opposite vontae and have smith as a 3rd option

Its simple... how many points has Jake Long scored in his career as a Dolphin?

Odin,

What are you worried about? By November 2012 they 'should' have a pretty good idea of where Pouncey fits in.

This FO should first learn how to draft a player that plays at least one position excellent, then worry about if they can play two other positions mediocre.

ONE MORE YEAR OF WAYCHING HENNE PLAY AS HE DID LAST YR AND I'LL PROBABLY BE DEAD BY SEASONS END.

Dying Breed,

I'm really concerned that this weight/health issue has become an epidemic. We, as fans, feed this frenzy that we call football. We never realize that these huge men are literally dying after their careers are over. It's truly sad and not even given a thought. It's pretty messed up.

Jimmy I believe we have 2 3rd round picks

Dont forget if our DB's could catch we win 3 more games..jets..det...pit. and if our special teams could takle we win 2 more...thast 12-4

BTW..McShay on ESPN just said that the Vikings reached on Ponder. He said they could be putting their organization in jeopardy and they should have went ol.....hmmmm

Well, this is a blessing in disguise, it expedites the final season of the two stooges.

Guess my post about the Offensive HOG index sent Craig to bed....

you just can't stick up for the O-line choice - almost anything else would have been better!

0x80,

Sorry I missed your reply back to me. I hardly think we are 1-9 in linemen. The jury is still out on Odrick (and Pouncey obviously) and Merling, Langford and Jerry still have some things to show. So I don't think it's all bad. I think we have great depth along both lines and that's a good thing. If the war is won in the trenches I think we're in good hands.

phinfactor - I didn't see that but I'm glad someone else is on the same page as me. It was getting lonely out here. Of course, I dig getting VY so I'm mostly out in the cold on that one.

-----------

I'm told Mike Pouncey will definitely play center.

Posted by: Armando Salguero

Well then, we are definitely effed. I had the opportunity to watch him play C and no way is he ready to play that position at the NFL level. G, absolutely, C no way. That will be a disaster for at least a year, perhaps two (at this level).

steve mariucci, "look at the offensive linemand taken. they're all protecting franchise quarterbacks." mike mayock, "who is pouncey protecting?" f*ck you mike mayock.

Jimmy, So many needs,so few draft picks......

0x80...You are right. But there are 7 more picks, and free agency to fill this void. There wasn't a skill player taken until KC took Baldwin, and Ingram didn't go until the very end of the round(after Minn took Ponder) If this round was loaded with skill players. I would agree. The strength lied in the offensive line, and on the defensive front. We have a player that is going to play every snap(barring injury) That is a good deal (IMO). This was not a first round where we were going to fill our needs at the skill positions. So we filled another position of need. We have way to many holes to draft the best player available...Sorry but is the reality of the situation.

"
Well, this is a blessing in disguise, it expedites the final season of the two stooges.
"

Totally agree...however, do you think Ross will finally get someone good.

I really hope so - when was the last time Miami had a half decent GM??? I am still thinking...

Darryl,

I don't know if you were singling me out or not. It felt like it. I'm not even going to type LOL, to depressed.

I would have been hard pressed to pass on Prince. Didn't expect him to fall that far.

I would have went with any of the tackles before pouncey. Solder, Carimi or Castanzo.

I would have even considered taking the DE Cameron or CB Jimmy Smith before pouncey.

It is what it is. I guess I'll shut up about it for now, but man, now I know how Lions fans felt when that genius Matt Millen was running things.

I was looking for this to be a turning point. Just some more Doom, Gloom and despair!

K sry we only have 1 3

0x80 do you want to hear a team with less offensive wepons.........the NE Patriots, they are a product of coaching and game planing, the do have 1 in brady but tell me one more

I dont get it with Ponder. Watched him play all 4 seasons at FSU and I never seen anything overly impressive about him

I have no idea what these socalled experts see. His best attribute is pulling the ball down and running with it.

Craig,

That was my point, only 1 out of 9 has been a sure fire solid pick, the others are either busts, off the team or question marks:

Jake Long - winner
Donald Thomas - gone
Shawn Murphy - gone
Lionel Dotson - ?
Andrew Gardner - gone
Merling - nuff said
Langford - ok, won't knock him
Odrick - still giving him the benefit of the doubt, but drafting a DE with a bum leg #1?
Jerry - still giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Jimmy Jam,

I would go DeMarco Murray in the third and Virgil Green in the fourth. Guys want to talk about 'weapons', there's a couple of guys that would add to our offence.

No panicking by Ireland so far... that's good. See how NE has 2 1st rounders next year already. We have to start matching that!

Lol Jimmy Jam I've been saying that all night that I do not think he is good enough to play center he was a complete reach that is not a sure thing for the position we drafted him for

Pouncey is a solid pick. The new regime that takes over will inherit one helluva oline within the next couple seasons! LOL.......

Patriots have Welker, two top tight ends, and a good coach.

So the difference between them and Miami is 2 tight ends and a coach.

The Dolphins, Bills. Bengals, Cards, 49ers,Redskins,Seahawks you could say still need QB's.

Mallet, Dalton, Kaepernick and Stanzi are still available. I would say we have a small shot at getting one.

W/e our defense is a top 5 and we can still get a qb in free agency all I kno is pouncey helps the run and passing game

Been telling everyone I believe Belichik is stockpiling picks to try and make a run at #1 overall trade up to get Andrew Luck! LOL..........

0x80,

My response to a lot of the detractors is we've tried the OL approach in the fourth and later drafts and it's never worked. We need to start improving that. That's what the Colts do, it's what the Pats do, it's what the Steelers do and the Packers have done it the last two years. You're best athletes and the guys with the best measurables are typically found in the first and second rounds.

Yes Pouncey is good...but we need "playmakers" man!!! Ireland and Tony plain suck, and they are scared to pull the trigger on a playmaker in round one. Kaepernick would have been a better round one pick IMO. We need to score points darnit...Ireland and Tony bite the big one yet again...

welker was hurt half of the year...and 2 rookie tight ends...wow your right..like i said game plan..game plan ..game plan

g,

you are kidding right? they have four proven rbs, we have zero. they have two real te's we have one single second string te, they have four proven wr's we have one, they have a hof qb, we have a guy fighting to make it to mid season, if not even start.

Check their 2010 roster online.

DyingBreed,

I unfortunately don't discount your theory.

I hate Belichick but damn he is good. So many picks - does not have to worry about a few misses. That's our problem - so few they all need to count!

3rd round 79th
4th round 111th overall
5th round 146th overall
6th round 179th overall
7th rd. (1) 217th overall
7th rd. (2) 218th overall
7th rd. (3) 235th overall

I agree Cuban. That is the problem, isn't it? It's been the problem for a long time but this regime hasn't managed to fix it yet. Lots of bust FAs and bust draft picks.

I don't hate the Pouncey pick (except using him at center) and I am looking forward to seeing what they do with the remainder of their picks. It'd be worth dumping all three of those 7s and the 6th to get an extra 4th. No team's that stupid though.

0x80,

You just named a bunch of guys:

Donald Thomas
Shawn Murphy
Lionel Dotson
Andrew Gardner

We tried doing it that way and it was a waste. How about we get a guy who could be solid for the next 6-8 years?

i'm not even going to try and speculate anymore. with the team sticking at #15 with no 2nd i kept hoping against hope their would be some aggressive move to get into the first like the saints did with trading their first next year but it never materialized. so, i'm not even thinking there is a possibility this regime is going to try and get a 2nd somehow tomorrow and we are going to have the one pick in the third. so, it will be a long and painful wait until then while we sit and watch all of those players that can help our team being taken in the 2nd rd. it's absolutely disgusting. thank God it recorded it on my dvr and just ff'd thru all the nonsense and watched it in about 45 min and didn't waste 4hrs of my day.

2011 is one year I sure wouldnt mind going 1-15. Oliver Luck baby!

The rb's and te's we would want everyone wants. Just because one we want is projected to go in the 3rd round doesn't mean we can call up and reserve him, we have to hope they are still there, destiny is not in our hands.

Did anyone see on the NFL channel when the where talking about the OL's selected to protect there good QB's and one of them asked "who is Pouncy" protecting... And they all went silent. Sad day for a Dolphin fan... love my team and will never give up... But such a sad sad day to be a Dolphin fan. Can't help but fear the worst another year. Understand the omportance of an OL but EVERY year??? WHen will it be completed before we can start getting people to actually move the ball...so very very sad. Goodnight all.

they have 2 rb's that couldnt start on any other team, and at wr ..wait your right branch edelman and tate are monsters...wow

Craig,

the Patriots have picked 2 offensive lineman in the first round since 1992 - one of which is this year!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_England_Patriots_first-round_draft_picks

The Colts have picked 2 since 1985!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_England_Patriots_first-round_draft_picks

Please - save your rants. Reply to my offensive HOG index post. Be real.

O-Line does not mean you need 1st rounders

Rob in OC,

Looks like you lost our bet. You has said Mallett would go first round. Obviously not. Not only that but there were 4 QBs already picked ahead of him. Guess everyone doesn't feel he's the 'franchise QB' you and others have him pegged to be. Wondering how this will sit with him. Will he work extra hard to prove everyone wrong or will he just burn out and fade away. Time will tell....but it's obvious many teams don't see the same things you guys see.

g,

You basically just want to disregard the fact that they have amassed an array offensive performers and we have not. Fine. Believe what you want.

That McShay comment is funny... sorry, but it made me giggle.

Craig - I like that: Murray in the 3rd and Green in the 4th. I'd definitely groove on that. Fingers crossed!
