The other side of the Carson Palmer coin

There is always another side to the proverbial coin.

When I discuss the interest I've perceived from the Dolphins for Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer -- based on conversations I've had with folks within the organization -- I always am very careful to point out this account only applies to Miami's interest.

I cannot tell you exactly what will happen when the lockout is lifted and players are allowed to be traded because I am not certain what the Bengals will do about Palmer. And they also get a vote. Yes, I believe the Bengals have offered small hints here and there they might be willing to part with Palmer for the right price.

But I haven't actually talked to the Bengals, I don't know what the price would be, and I have no clue what the Dolphins would think of that price.

That is the other side of the coin. And Geoff "Butch" Hobson, who was so good at covering the Bengals for so long the team waved the white flag and actually hired him (If you can't beat them, hire them), says the trade winds for Palmer are so still, there are no trade winds.

Not for the third-round pick Dan Marino suggested he would give. Not for anything any of you are willing to part with, based on my reading of your comments.

"... If [the Dolphins] think it’s going to take Dan Marino’s suggested third-round pick, they should take a drug test," Hobson wrote recently. "Mike Brown giving up Palmer for only a third-rounder? Never happen. Brown giving up Palmer period? Maybe less than never."

I sat next to Hobson during the NFL annual meetings in New Orleans. He mentioned more than once to me he thinks Palmer is simply outstanding. He said watching him during practices, he's seen Palmer make every single throw imaginable -- dashing the theory Palmer is too injured and diminished to make a difference any more. He also, on more than one occasion, compared Palmer to Jim Plunkett.

Plunkett, like Palmer, was a former No. 1 overall pick. Plunkett, like Palmer, had his share of struggles with a struggling franchise that drafted him. And Plunkett was traded to the Oakland Raiders where he won a couple of Super Bowl titles.

If that analogy is accurate, Palmer would be exactly the right veteran QB to chase once the NFL labor situation is settled.

I suppose that's the third side of the coin. Um, yeah, the third side of the coin.

Cuban Menance,

We're not quite the new Lions of the afc east yet. Had those weak Lions teams of the past had gone 7-9. They would have had parades in thier honor and given keys to thier city.

7-9 would have been in comparison like winning the SB for that city, its franchise, and its fans! LOL...............

Breed, A lot of these bloggers think a couple guys will help this helpless team.......

carson palmer saaaaaacks !
Should have had the shoulder surgery. His stats are padded , the Bengals get blown out , duh....

As a Dolphan, Im not nearly as concerned about our franchise hitting absolute bottom as I am about becoming perrenial "middle of the pack."

Im more worried about being stuck drafting 15th-25th for the next 10 years. That equates to one and dones even if you do make the playoffs 5 of those 10yrs.

The digg is right. When getting blownout, teams usually go to prevent defenses. Meaning a qb is basically just "padding" his stats in those situations. Also ups his pick numbers.

May I also add that steven(Hollywood)Ross in jan. went after a NCAA coach while he stillhad a coach under contract, amazingly he wonders why he cant get any Assit. coach down here... This is the real cancer infecting the fins...IMHO..

However, given the choice of Palmer or VY, based on completion percentage alone. Its Palmer hands down.

VY has yet to have even one season of at least a 60% completion percentage. Points are very difficult to come by in the nfl with sub 60% completion percentages too.

There is no QB living that will take this team to the SB in 2011. It's not even certain there will be a full season or any season. I wouldn't bring in any FA whose prime was already behind him, its absolutely senseless.

Draft a QB, go with Henne as day 1 starter, and hang on to Thiggy for 2011. Use the rest of your resources to add offensive weapons. 2011 is not the year to be giving away picks or paying up for a FA in his decline.

Joe Robbie was the only real owner this franchise has ever had. And he could be a drunken jerk at times. Still he's light years ahead of the two owners that have followed him.

0x80,

That's exactly why Mallet at #15 is making more sense to me. If Henne fails miserably throw Mallet straight into the fire and see what he's got.

Last time that happened in Miami it was the birth of a franchised legend simply known as "MARINO".

the other side of the carson palmer coin:
heads he sucks
tails he really sucks

i live in cincy and watched every bengals game this past season. Palmers average game went like this
Play poorly, make bad choices, be down a few TD's at half. Then Palmer would keep throwing and throwing and throwing and eventually T.O or ochocinco would make a great play on one of his balls, break some tackles and score.
Come on guys, anyone can hit a homerun with enough at bats. Palmer wouldn't be any better than Henne is

I wouldnt be surprised if Shanahan pulled the trigger on Mallet at #10. Shanahan is guy that doesnt care what his critics think.

Not saying Shanahan will do it. But if anyone top 10 is more likely to pull a very early trigger on Mallet its Shanahan.

ALoco,

Did you see my apology to you in the last blog?

Cuban,

I'm TRYING not to be as pessimistic as some, but you make a good point.

How could a gazillionaire skilled in business etiquette be this ignorant?

How could Ireland have been so stupid as to not change up his question: "I see, and in what capacity does your mother work for your father"? Duh! HELLO?

I mean these guys are SERIOUSLY carrying on like Dumb and Dumber.

I'm a TOTAL idiot and I feel like I have better common sense than these two DOLTS!

Ross and Ireland make SpOrano look like a genius and.......well.....we've all seen Tony's fist pump and pressers!

Every time I read any news about the Dolphins, I swear I can hear the Twilight Zone music playing in the background!

PLEASE! Somebody-MAKE IT STOP!!!!

DB, I know its a guessing game for us all, but I'm guessing Mallet will not be there at 15. I think Newton and Mallet will be the first two QB's selected. I can't say I'd want any of the others at 15.

Aloco,

Forget that Dying Breed is beating down the Phins.

I want to know how he changed the blog into italics?

Breeds got pull around here. How'd you do that?

Watch out Odin or you'll be cast into Lil Aloco's GOD(Gang of defeat)or as lil aloco would write(GANG OF DEFEET)(Still lmao)On that one..... Be Fore warned............

THAT WAS A FAKE ALOCO ,GUYS... I CAN'T KEEP SAYING THAT DUMB FAKING ME ALL THE TIME .I DON'T TALK LIKE THAT.ARAMANDO IS .

Norse, I noticed that too, How does he do it??? Or is it Home???

YES ,I DID SEE THAT DB . I WILL NEVER INSULT ANY ONE ...ARMANDO DOES TO CREAT TRAFFIC ... THAT'S ALL .

DB, we need to bring someone like Vince Young in here. Forget Henne and Mallet is a two year project at best. We need to win now not two years from now. We need a vet and no matter how much Armando is enamored with this guy, he isn't a good fit for us.

Aloco, your wrong, you can sound that dumb...........

ALoco,

I believe when you say someone's faking you to try and start trouble.

Aloco, Whats for dinner tonight?????????

Wasnt me that changed the blog into italics. It happened once early in 2010 season too for no apparent reason.

I think after that the entire blog disappeared. The Herald's IT department's screwing something up again.

if shanahan gets a qb at 10 then there's more chance of mcnabb getting cut, and we wouldn't have to trade picks for him

if he beats out henne then he could do the job till we find our next suspect franchise qb

only if he beats out henne, if theres a training camp if he gets cut and only costs cash

if

Info tells me it's the only way to get rid of the "Aloco" situation(Getting rid of imposter aloco) though I might be wrong.......

and - i get that we want to win now to some extent but i'd rather win bigger (sb) and for longer (years to come) if that takes 2-3 years to deliver its better than the last 10 of ***** we've had

d-dense,

VY is scaring me after seeing that he's never completed 60% of his passes since he's been in the league. Even Henne is more accurate and thats very scary!

0x80,

I posted the other day that I think Mallet may go before Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert's only been the collegiate version of Chad Henne. He seems to be yet another checkdown charlie.

I've been on this blog since it's inception.

About 3 years ago, Aloco and I used to fight like cats and dogs. It was bad, VERY Bad.

Any way I used to be convinced that Aloco was the nut job impostering others.

There were rumors that the Cuban Menace was doing this too(he's been here that long as well).

I have seen the real ARMANDO come on here numerous times over the years and defend both these guys.

I don't know who it is, but I can tell you guys that I'm convinced it's NOT the Cuban Menace or ALoco!

Shut up Odin you don't know squat!

Aloco, Cuban, why I feel someone talking to self?

Db last year Vince had a passer rating of 98.6 he's gotten a ton of awards over the years. Better than cp.

2002 Pete Dawkins Trophy
2005 Rose Bowl MVP
2005 Manning Award
2005 Maxwell Award
2005 Davey O'Brien Award
2005 Cingular All-America Player of the Year
2005 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year
2005 Consensus First-Team All-American
2006 Rose Bowl MVP
"4 weeks" 2006 NFL Rookie of the Week Awards
2006 NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year
2006 Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year
2007 Pro Bowl
2008 Madden Football Cover
2008 The Farren Staten Award
2010 Pro Bowl

Guys a jerk, but so are most of these guys. Needs mentoring and a people skills course. If we made it work with Brandon and Ricky. I think there is still hope.

Armando?

Whazzup?

My point was that although VY only played, I think 10 games last year. Henne was like 75.6 or something like that. I'm sure the number were down due to the conservative play calling by Henning. Nonetheless a vet and it isn't cp.

ODIN,
I AM WATCHING AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER ...HE SINGS RAP SONG WITH MANY ME .

DR,EVIL HAS SCAPED WITH MANY ME .

From Wiki:

A controversy regarding the Wonderlic, a standardized test given to all recruits, was thought also to have been problematic for Young. On February 25, 2006, during the NFL Combine, it was erroneously reported that Vince scored a six, out of a possible fifty points, on his Wonderlic Test. The test is designed to measure a player's ability to learn a complex NFL playbook. Some observers believed this score would lower Young's draft selection and faulted his agent, Major Adams, for not preparing Young ahead of time with practice tests.[33]

However, on February 26, 2006, combine officials said the reported score of six was incorrect. According to NFL Spokesman Steve Alic, "I can tell you absolutely that the score that has been reported on the Internet is inaccurate. I spoke to the person who graded the test, and he assured me that that number was not correct."[34] The next day, the test was properly readministered and Young scored a 16, the same as Dan Marino

-This is an interesting story in and of itself.

Still, I don't get it. Did he originally score a 6 and then given a "do-over"?

Homes! Where are you when we need you? I smell a favoritism conspiracy!

What Channel lil Aloco????

STARZ ON CABLE

"YEAH BABY,YEAH...."

Carson Palmer = Daute Culpepper. Similar injuries, similar questions, and Palmer is actually 3 years older than when Daunte came here. Just say no!

There isn't a Lions fan on Earth who wouldn't find that laughable.

When Miami has experienced utter futility for the better part of a half-century with very few exceptions THEN you can compare notes with Lions fans.

The supporting cast for QB's is very important. I remember Griese struggling, running around for his life(by the way, he was a great scrambler) before Shula arrived. I am trying to recall a QB that made a lousy Team a winner and none comes to mind. Can anybody recall any such kind?

If the Dolphins offensive line was set, I wouldn't hesitate to get Palmer. But this past year they started protecting well, then some OL were released, then injuries, in short, complete disarray. Based on that fact and at the price, I say nay to Carson Palmer.

Oscar,Payton Manning,Drew Brees, and the kid of Ta,pa Bay comes to mind...

please!!!!lets built on def. side of the ball.... we have to excel on one side of the ball... and the def. is years ahead than off.... the def. is the future of this team... the teams that are based on their def have been competitive more years than any body... look at steel or ravs year over year they are in postseason...stop dreaming and wasting picks in trades... lets buit on deffense!!!

...Crushing afternoon. My good friends Hotel exploded this morning from a gas leak. Flattened the oldest most historic building in town. Luckily nobody was injured. I'm stunned, and smell like smoke from helping with the fire.

Dying Breed....I posted this the other day about Vince Young. It was only one game, and it is hard to make a judgement(good, or bad) from only 4 quarters. In the Dallas game. young was magnificent. He was facing 8 man fronts all day. The Titans unlike the Dolphins. Attacked the defense by throwing the ball down field. Young to my suprise was very accurate with the deep ball. He also showed great touch, and the ability to spread the ball to his recievers. Finding one one one matchups. This forced Dallas to respect the pass, and in the second half, Chris Johnson to run wild.

To be fair, the Titans have a very good line. But Young was very good in the face of the rush, and the blitzes the Crackwagon kept coming with. He knew where to go with the ball, without freaking out and just checking it down. The Titans recieving corps in not close to the players we have at the same position. Can anyone name a guy besides Kenny Britt(don't google the names, off your head). They do not have a tight end that scares anyone either. They do have an outstanding running game to fall back on. The one thing that I wonder about Young. Is, if he doesn't have any running game. Can he put the team on his shoulders for a game? He has always had that comfort.

Also, Young doesn't solve the problem of quarterback for the long term. He is a stop gap. If you favor this route, Young could be a quality player until we can groom the right guy. With this class of quarterbacks, I think stop gap is the best option.

I have already braced myself for another 7 -9 season with Henne at the helm.
We can't get all gun shy cause we spent a 2nd rnd on Henne when he is clearly a 4th rnd talent.

I would rather come in last place if it meant generating a trade down so we can
pick up ANYBODY more talented than Henne in the 2nd rnd.
I'd rather know that we gave it our best effort & gave ourselves every
opportunity to finally draft a quality QB after 27 years.

I'd rather we embrace the Bellachik philosophy of massing draft pks.
Anything different means were going the wrong way as a franchise.

To Hell n back ... no more draft pks for FA QBs.
To hell with Sporanos Cromagnon view of modern day NFL Offense.
The 8 finalist in the Playoffs common denominator was a passing game.

Is it just me or is it completely obvious that Hobson is saying how great Palmer is because he wants more for him. I mean it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. "He's great, you should see all of the amazing throws he makes in practice". Really Hobson? I watched him play last year, the problem is the same as Henne's I guess. You can look like a world beater in practice but once3 game day comes you can also look very pedestrian. No Hobson, you must be taking drugs if you think the Dolphins are going to give up a 1st rounder for an aging qb with recent injuries.

Are you sick and tired of looking at the list of QB's that have come through this town since Marino retired that did not live up to the hype. Now you want to add Palmer who is no better that Henne, just older and more expensive?

The Phins should have 2 options; develop Henne or find the QB of the future....stop signing QB retreads that last for a year and a half and then leave town with their tails between their legs. That is just prolonging the misery!!!

Oh, and by the way isn't Miami considered a struggling franchise? I think the answer is YES!

Palmer sucks.

PETE,

HOBSON ,WHO IS HE ? HE'S A DOOR MAN FOR PALMER. MOST PERSONAL WORK IN AN ORGANIZATION LIKE THE FINS OR CIN ARE JUST DUMB AND DON'T KNOW A THING ABOUT FOOTBALL,THEY JUST GET HIRED B/C THEY KNOW SOME ONE LIKE THE HC AS THE CASE WITH OUR QUILTY COACH .

Palmer is definitely a "trying to save our jobs for now" solution for Sparano/Ireland. The move would make better sense if we landed Mallet too.

Henne's more than likely bolting in 2012 when fa occurs. I dont see him beating out even Palmer and drafting a qb 1st rd would mean the writing's on the wall for Henne.

Bottomline is the Bengals may want to much for Palmer. Palmer may have about 3 really good seasons left in him. That isnt worth overpaying for.

RUSTYJ.......HENNE IS DEVELOPED ,HE MUST DO IT AND LEAD THIS YEAR OR HE'S MASHED POTATOES .NO MORE TALK OF DEVELOPING HIM .

WHY WE HAVE TO TAKE EVERY TEAM'S TRASH EVERY YEAR AND NEVER GET THESE YOUNG QB'S OR RB'S THROUGH THE DRAFT .....

THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR MIKE DEE WILL BE PRESENT AT DRAFT AND I DON'T SEE ANY ROSS'S MONEY TO BE WASTED ......

IS CHAD.P OUT YET OR STILL MENTORING HENNE ?

ALoco,

Im beginning to believe like you that Armando maybe at least remotely behind all of the impersonations. They create blog hits for him.

He still has yet to come out and say who the master perpetrators are or that they have been or will be banned. He has the power to know exactly who they are, expose them publically, and ban them.

Yet he's done none of these things. Which makes one raise high brow that maybe he's directly connected to these shennanigans.

ALoco,

I read an article at slum sentinel where CP stated he hasnt ruled out playing in 2011. I also heard there's interest within the organization of making CP an offensive coach in some capacity.

He should just retire and accept some sort of qb coaching position in some capacity with the team. I absolutely cringe to ever have to see him on the playing field ever again.
