« Draft Day No. 3 live blog starts here at noon | Main | My grade of Dolphins draft: Why do you care? »

What to do with Henne, and why not Ryan Mallett

Chad Henne is still Miami's only quarterback. But as I write in my column today, the Dolphins have a plan for getting better at that position this offseason that both includes Henne and replaces Henne.

Please check out the column because it gives you inside information on the changes the Dolphins are making to the offense to make Henne better. It also gives you an idea of what Miami is certain to attempt to replace Henne.

Having said that, the quarterback that everyone around here believes could have and should have been a Dolphin is Ryan Mallett.

Many of you wanted a quarterback in the draft. And I get it. Mallett had first-round talent with that great arm and accuracy. Mallett also could be had because he dropped like a lead pipe in water for reasons too many to name. That kind of quarterback talent doesn't fall to the third round very often yet that's exactly where Mallett and his Slim Shady personality fell.

The Dolphins get it, also.

General Manager Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano get it. They wanted the right quarterback in the draft, too. And they tried to make a play to get Ryan Mallett. Lacking a third-round pick, they tried to trade into the third round to get Mallett, according to a source.

They were not able to get in high enough fast enough.

"We were willing to take him, we just couldn't get our hands on him," the source with knowledge of the front office's thinking told me. "We tried, but we couldn't do it. He's going to be a good quarterback."

Instead the Dolphins are moving on because, for all the work they did on Mallett, for all the skills they know he possesses, they just didn't see him as a first- or second-round player. (Neither did anyone else, by the way.)

The Dolphins tell me they couldn't get a vision for Mallett to invest in him that early. To pick a player you have to know how he fits the team, how he fits the position. As a first or second round pick, that would mean Mallett would be your presumed starter immediately.

Proof: First-round pick Mike Pouncey and second-round pick Daniel Thomas are Miami's presumed starters at center and running back today.

The Dolphins weren't comfortable with that for Mallett. Call it gut. They just didn't feel this kid is ready to handle the daily grind of being an NFL starting QB -- something that reaches far beyond going on the field every Sunday and throwing the rock.

I'm told the Dolphins, as an organization, tried to find someone who has succeeded in the NFL that has a Ryan Mallett-type of personality and approach. They tried to find someone that has a character like Ryan Mallett and has succeeded in the NFL. Thinking ....

Thinking ...

Still thinking ....

I got it! Nobody!

Who does this kid remind you of that has been successful? Nobody! Not Manning, not Brady, not Brees, not anyone that came before. Well, he reminds me of Ryan Leaf but they were looking for someone successful.

That troubled the Dolphins' brass. No one felt strongly about his makeup.

"There are questions there," a source tells me.

I'm writing this having talked to Mallett once on the phone. I don't know him. I have no clue (no jokes, please.)

But the Dolphins were all over this kid. Ireland brought Mallett here. He went to see Mallett there. He went to dinner with him. He met him at the combine. He watched him play on tape and live. He wanted to get exposure to him. He evaluated the kid and the quarterback.

And there was just no comfort level there to invest on him in the first or second round. So it just didn’t happen.

It did happen for the Patriots in the third round. But remember, their situation is different. The Patriots are not looking for a starting quarterback. They don't need Mallett to come in and compete for a starting job.

He will not be their starter this year. He will not be their starter next year. Or the year after that, as long as Tom Brady remains healthy.

The Patriots, unlike the Dolphins, have the luxury of remaking Mallett in their image. They can use the next two years to turn him into the person they want him to be. They can store him away rather than thrust him into a starter's limelight where all the pressure and expectations are found.

That's a wonderful luxury to have. The Dolphins didn't have that luxury.

So they go in another direction. They have their plan for getting the quarterback position right.

Armando on April 28 u predicted 2 draft picks for the fins !!!!!!! Nice

Mark it down - CHAD HENNE will LIGHT IT UP THIS YEAR...if there is a season.

The Patriots will groom Mallett for a few years, then trade the worn out Brady for multiple high picks.

give it up on henne. if the guy needs someone to challenge him, if he can't challenge himself or even look interested in the game, he got nothing to show that we haven't seen already. the guy plays like his head is made of wax.

yeah henne will light it up, pick after pick, over throw after over throw. maybe this year people will realize the guy sucks. how much more proof do people need?

Being a hater is what motivates some guys in here. If we won a SB by 14pts they would still complain about the missed field goal preventing us from winning by 17pts.

They would still chalk up bs why we need a new coach, gm, players, whatever. Some guys motivation for being alive is to find something to be negative about!

If we won 10 SB's in a row then the perrenial malcontents will start attacking the team logo. LOL..........

I've been coming here at least the last few seasons. Seems the same group of malcontents are never happy no matter what occurs. Please see: Zanex or something! LOL.......

They are as quiet as church mice pissing on cotton when something pleasant happens. But as soon as something they percieve to be unpleasant happens. Then out comes the itty-bitty-shitty committe in full force. LOL.....

Thx for stopping by!

Thinking must be hard for the Dolphins and Armando....who does Mallett remind you of....try a big QB that plays for the Steelers...you know big...strong armed...likes to party at times...but gets the job done when he's on the field...and on the feld is the only thing that matters! Mallett had a winning record with "who" playing with him...get it...imagine if he had better talent to play with.

Guys we dont have Mallet nothing's going to change that now. Mallet or no Mallet the goal is still to get to a SB.

Until Mallet actual leads a team to a SB, these meaningless points will be mute. I wanted Mallet as much as anyone. But above all else Im a Dolfan, not a Mallet-fan.

Until Mallet leads a team to SB ring before this team wins a SB ring. MUTHERF*UCK A MALLET!

Let's get over it already, to date he's done absolutely ZILCH on the nfl level.

I was a big Mallet Supporter but its time to move on to Free agency---His is a Pat and now i can no longer root 4 him. He will probably be on thier team for 2-3 years and then trade him like Cassel for a hig draft pick.

I tought the pats draft was bad--Rasi dowling will always be injured , soldier is solid--but a couple of reaches on Rbs i didnt like im fine with that.

thier best picks were the 2 luxury picks of Cannon, and Mallett

But im ready for Free agency--

And i will just talk defense b/c it has been a priority this offseason with all the offense worries.

Defense

I would like relatively cheap upgrades to OLB and ILB---

Kirk morrison ILB---(then we couuld finally cut Crowder)
Mark anderson DE/OLB
Would be nice additions

And then Make the splash its A PASSING / COVERAGE LEAGUE---

Nnamndi Asomugah DB

Defense would be stacked---U could slide Nnamndi and Sean smith around all over the place from corner to safety--it would be crazy with Nolan

Last I checked were the Miami Dolphins not the Miami Mallet-phins! AS far as Im concerned he's now Ryan Mullet! LOL...........

Mallet is just a ploy to get someone to trade with as well as the other quarterbacks interviewed. Move down to get a second round pick.

Remember when the Phins almost had Pat White killed by the Steelers on the field?

Fist Hump!

i dont know but i have a feeling the phins might take a decent look at matt hasselbeck

supposedly hes is gotten himself in the best shape of his life but i get he still old but it be good for henne competetion

Wild cat remains with both Thomas and Clay. Brown hands off to Thomas on a end around tosses it backwards to Clay who launches it deep to Gates who's wide open down field again.

Everyone needs to remember...NO HENNING! Addition by subtraction.

Fist hump!

charles clay i think will be used a decent amount this year he can contribute cuz he can create mismathces with line backers

Good Lord!!
Ol jimmy is rolling around in his grave now.... more of the same ol same ol with this hapless bunch...look for another year of missing the playoffs no line no qb no receivers good defense but thats it! Oh well is it college basketball season yet?

AndyNJ, I agree with all your comments, sorry, I was away from from the blog re: family related stuff, but I thank you for the acknowledgement!

I have watched Ryan Williams for years and watch more football college and pro than most fans. DVR's full of games. Ryan Williams is not just a name or a guy I threw out there because he played at a big school. KState is a big school. Thomas just doesn't have the big play ability or the explosiveness. Mayock agrees with me that Thomas is build like a power back but doesn't deliver a blow and is not very powerful. Said R. Williams actually runs stronger and can shake or break a tackle. I have watched Thomas and have seen him chased down much more than I have ever seen Williams.

Have ure big power back...I will take a guy like Taiwan Jones who would offer the big play threat. You win in this league with the explosive play like Ron Jawarski has said many times. Fins can't produce them and look silly trying to run the wildcat to get chunk yardage because they lack the athletes to do it conventionally in the passing or running game.

Look forward to a Daboli bore with iso runs and traps gaining 3 yds a play with the occassional 5yd hitch or flare pass to Thomas. This team has always been very easy to prepare for on offense and now that the wildcat is no longer difficult for teams to defend...we will avg abt 16ppg game this year. At td an 3fgs per. Thomas is not better than Williams in any fashion outside of having taken wildcat snaps.

Dr. Roberts, re: the Heat post, thx, awesome!

Best draft so far by this regime. If they sign Kolb or Palmer to compete with Henne, they've done great. Don't be surprised if Sproles finds his way here as well. I think they made the most of their limited picks, and addressed exactly what we needed. Maybe Mallett, etc. really aren't that good, or even as good as Henne. So way draft a qb just for the sake of doing so......

DyingB, you drunk? After those posts...LOL! loved them!

My final negativity.

Didn't like pouncey at 15. I thought there was better players available there.

Didn't like the cost of the trade up for Thomas either.

Other than that, I like these two guys a lot. Though I do agree with Cocojoe. Pouncey at LG and Cog back to his natural position at Center. We just saw a glimpse of Cog bouncing back to Center after years of playing only Guard. Cog was a BEAST at center and Pouncey definitely a better Guard. Long, Pouncey and Cog plating LT, LG and Center respectively, sounds FORMIDIBLE. Of course I have no confidence in SpOrano figuring out the right spots to play them. It always happens this way. He spent three years shuffling the line, now that they should do it, they won't.

I loved the next two picks in Gates and Clay. These two alone will be a big boost to special teams immediately. If Gates pans out at receiver, our corps will be completely awesome. Marshall, Bess and a sub 4.3 speed guy, get outta here!

All my negativity was mainly due to our spending 4 picks on the first two draftees. It could have been better for sure, but other than that, I like it. A lot!

Now, lets make some good moves in FA and get on with it ALREADY!

AndyNJ, I wanted Ingram too, but I did more research on the Dolphins picks and saw their logic! Better draft than last year! But they have not played a down...we'll see!!!!

IT'S VERY CLEAR THAT IRELAND LEAKS INFORMATION TO ARMANDO TO GET THE FANS OFF HIS BACK,IF ARMADO WANTS TO BE THE FRONT FOR IRELAND SO BE IT ........

SureShock, if Palmer is not available, I like Hasselbeck! Did a great job last year for a Cinderella team!

Whelp it's all over but the cryin'.

Seems Craig M, DD and others got their wish for a "safe" and "try not to miss" minded draft class.

We shall see how this draft class works out for the Fins.

Using the draft picks that we had to work with and going with a NON Mallet viewpoint. (I think the Fins bungled badly stating we couldn't trade up in the 3rd?)

This is how the Fins draft could have played out had the Bifecta not traded away picks to get RB Daniel Thomas in the 2nd. This is what we could have had if we just stayed put:

1st G Pouncey (I think his position will eventually be at guard after trying hard to make him a center. He should be a great G though.)

3rd RB Alex Green : Bruising, inside back with heft 225lbs and speed 4.51-4.53. Averaged 8.2 yards per carry as a senior. Has better moves is just as big and faster than RB Daniel Thomas. Good power and runs behind his pads. Drafted by GB in the 3rd.

4th RB Taiwan Jones : Talked about ad nauseum with speed, moves and hands to be a great change of pace back and returner. He gets the nod over WR Gates as he is a better ST guy KR/PR and just as fast.

5th WR Paul Niles : Nice bulk at 224lbs. Has the attitude and frame to be an excellent blocker. Fearless to work the middle. Came from a running school that hampered his numbers. Strong for a WR!

6th TE/FB/H Back Charles Clay : I think they Fins got decent value with this pick. Versatile jack of all trades guy. I am fine with this pick.

7th RB Noel Devine : Cat quick, elusive and put up very nice stats at West Virginia. Ironman type small guy that never complains about bumps and nicks. Soft hands, nice space player that gets a lot out of a play. Avg nearly 6 yards per rush in his career at WV. Return ability is added bonus. Rushing for 4,300 yards in no easy task.

7th OL Lee Ziemba : Beastly brawler. 6'8" and 315+ lbs. Can make a roster with a decent skill set.

7th RB Derrick Locke : Speedy back that is actually very North and South for his smallish size. Try hard type runner. Flashed nicely at the Senior Bowl. Has return /ST ability.

With TS's desire to run the ball and improve ST we bring in these players and let them separate themselves as players that can contribute. With these RBs we could have revamped the whole backfield and get two new KR/PR guys to start improving field position.

FAs to target:

QB Scott Tolzien : Accuracy king at over 68% completion ratio. 32 TDs vs 18 Ints in a run first Offense. Throws guys open. Had an insane 72.9% completion ratio as a Senior while cutting his Ints down to 6. Worth the look see.

CB Kendric Burney : Slower times dropped him to FA but he has uncanny knack for plays on the ball. Plenty of INTs says he is instinctive.

TE Schuylar Oordt : Good triangle numbers 6'5 3/4" 262lbs 4.67 40. Outstanding hands for the deep catch averaging 17.7 yards per catch. Needs to bulk up some but has tools.

WR Terrance Tolliver : Bigger WR from a big program at LSU. Has inconsistencies which drop him but has flashed some very superior games at times. Could stick with coaching and his effort to improve.

I figured this would be the best time to state my "Draft that could have happened". I would have taken Mallet in the 3rd but that is my preference. All these moves were all possible after reviewing what actually happened. This is not the 20/20 vision hindsight look back in 2012 with people saying "Oh, that was the guy I would have picked" after watching the players play in 2011.

Whenever the NFL players/owners pull their heads out and the games begin we can track our player choice exploits.

Cheers,

HOW CAN ANY ONE SAY ,IT'S THE BEST DRAFT BY THIS REGIME SO FAR WITHOUTH SEEING WHO'S GOING TO START AND WITHOUT OUR DENTIST LOOKS AT THEIR BODYS ....

ROB,

PLEASE TAKE IT EASY ON US;;

1- DB IS DRUNK
2- I DON'T READ LONG POSTS
3-REDSKAY IS GOING TO SLEP VERY SOON
4-YOUR DAY STARTS NOW AND OURS ENDS ABOUT 30 MINUTES FROM NOW .

4th RB Taiwan Jones : Talked about ad nauseum with speed, moves and hands to be a great change of pace back and returner. He gets the nod over WR Gates as he is a better ST guy KR/PR and just as fast.

Cheers,

Rob,

I know these are all moot points now, but are you sure about Jones return skills? Or maybe I should say experience.

I can't remember for sure, but it seems like I read that he only returned very VERY few kick offs and punts.

Dunno why, just curious................

ODIN,

I THINK ROB KNOWS MORE THAN YOU ABOUT FOOTBALL BUT ABOUT WOMEN YOU DO KNOW MORE .

JONES IS BETER THAN GATES WHO USE TO PLAY BASKETBALL .

so many wannabe gm's here. i guess ireland is so stupid that even with 100 times more research than any blogger he can't pick as well as them. nobody has even taken a snap yet and bloggers magically know who is better than who. too bad they can't magically make a nickel off their $0.02 of analysis that ain't even worth $0.01.

I BET IRELAND DOESN'T KNOW HOW THESE PLAYERS WILL TURN OUT TO BE,...HE JUST DRAFT CHEAP PLAYERS FOR ROSS .

Aloco the only player I won't question is Pouncy

The president is about to address the nation. I'll speculate that they got Bin-Laden.

RAY ,

WHY NOT EVEN POUNCY AT 15 WHEN YOU HAD INGRAM,ANDU DALTOIN AND MALLET ....I THINK IRELAND WENT INTO THE DRAFT WITH IDEA OF NO QB B/C HE KNOWS HE WIL SIGN ONE IN FA AND KEEP OUR BELOVED THINGGY ,,,,,,,,,,,

Rob-OC,

ALoco claims Im drunk, are you? Every guy you named we should have drafted 7th rd are ufas. BTW, Lee Ziemba is the lowest rated olineman of those available. Check nfl.com

Yes, early word is Bin Laden is dead.

WE GOT OSAMA BIN LADEN .

My bad Aloco the only player that I don't question is pouncy because he played in great conference and good competition the other players I ask my self, what kind of program they came from what competition they played against what type defenses they played against....and you guys know it's hard to hit 4 out of 7 players you draft let alone out of 5 picks, we gave up three picks for one player I hope he was right because if he fails MR ROSS HAS TO FIRE EVERYBODY IN THE FRONT OFFICE!!! So let's see guys what happens next on the FA!!!

Amazing it took so long, but THANK YOU to the military and our president for not relenting and FINALLY erasing that pig from the face of the Earth.

VIVA OBAMA

MAY DAY FOR BIN LADEN BABY! MAY 1, 2011. hE ISSUED A 911 AND NOW THAT MUTHERF*UCKER'S "MAY DAY" HAS COME! YEAHHHHHHHHHH................

Aloco,

You can give your opinion on who knows more about whatever.

But, as SpOrano would say, after we looks as these things, and, ah at the end of the, um ah day, it is just one Aloco opinion.

As difficult as it is too compare a RB to WR receiver, I believe I'm correct when I say Gates is TONS and TONS better than Taiwan Jones.

It pretty simply you see, just based on the fact that Gates is a Dolphin, Jones is not.

Therefor, Gates is way WAY better than Jones. Oh yeah........and I knew that ALL ALONG!!!!

Never say Die.

R.I.P. Osama!!!!

Live by the Sword, DIE by the Sword!!!!

MAY DAY, MAY DAY! THE MAY DAY IS WRAPPED AROUND BIN LADENS A*SS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
