« Draft Day No. 3 live blog starts here at noon | Main | My grade of Dolphins draft: Why do you care? »

What to do with Henne, and why not Ryan Mallett

Chad Henne is still Miami's only quarterback. But as I write in my column today, the Dolphins have a plan for getting better at that position this offseason that both includes Henne and replaces Henne.

Please check out the column because it gives you inside information on the changes the Dolphins are making to the offense to make Henne better. It also gives you an idea of what Miami is certain to attempt to replace Henne.

Having said that, the quarterback that everyone around here believes could have and should have been a Dolphin is Ryan Mallett.

Many of you wanted a quarterback in the draft. And I get it. Mallett had first-round talent with that great arm and accuracy. Mallett also could be had because he dropped like a lead pipe in water for reasons too many to name. That kind of quarterback talent doesn't fall to the third round very often yet that's exactly where Mallett and his Slim Shady personality fell.

The Dolphins get it, also.

General Manager Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano get it. They wanted the right quarterback in the draft, too. And they tried to make a play to get Ryan Mallett. Lacking a third-round pick, they tried to trade into the third round to get Mallett, according to a source.

They were not able to get in high enough fast enough.

"We were willing to take him, we just couldn't get our hands on him," the source with knowledge of the front office's thinking told me. "We tried, but we couldn't do it. He's going to be a good quarterback."

Instead the Dolphins are moving on because, for all the work they did on Mallett, for all the skills they know he possesses, they just didn't see him as a first- or second-round player. (Neither did anyone else, by the way.)

The Dolphins tell me they couldn't get a vision for Mallett to invest in him that early. To pick a player you have to know how he fits the team, how he fits the position. As a first or second round pick, that would mean Mallett would be your presumed starter immediately.

Proof: First-round pick Mike Pouncey and second-round pick Daniel Thomas are Miami's presumed starters at center and running back today.

The Dolphins weren't comfortable with that for Mallett. Call it gut. They just didn't feel this kid is ready to handle the daily grind of being an NFL starting QB -- something that reaches far beyond going on the field every Sunday and throwing the rock.

I'm told the Dolphins, as an organization, tried to find someone who has succeeded in the NFL that has a Ryan Mallett-type of personality and approach. They tried to find someone that has a character like Ryan Mallett and has succeeded in the NFL. Thinking ....

Thinking ...

Still thinking ....

I got it! Nobody!

Who does this kid remind you of that has been successful? Nobody! Not Manning, not Brady, not Brees, not anyone that came before. Well, he reminds me of Ryan Leaf but they were looking for someone successful.

That troubled the Dolphins' brass. No one felt strongly about his makeup.

"There are questions there," a source tells me.

I'm writing this having talked to Mallett once on the phone. I don't know him. I have no clue (no jokes, please.)

But the Dolphins were all over this kid. Ireland brought Mallett here. He went to see Mallett there. He went to dinner with him. He met him at the combine. He watched him play on tape and live. He wanted to get exposure to him. He evaluated the kid and the quarterback.

And there was just no comfort level there to invest on him in the first or second round. So it just didn’t happen.

It did happen for the Patriots in the third round. But remember, their situation is different. The Patriots are not looking for a starting quarterback. They don't need Mallett to come in and compete for a starting job.

He will not be their starter this year. He will not be their starter next year. Or the year after that, as long as Tom Brady remains healthy.

The Patriots, unlike the Dolphins, have the luxury of remaking Mallett in their image. They can use the next two years to turn him into the person they want him to be. They can store him away rather than thrust him into a starter's limelight where all the pressure and expectations are found.

That's a wonderful luxury to have. The Dolphins didn't have that luxury.

So they go in another direction. They have their plan for getting the quarterback position right.

DB,

You are right all are FAs but there is just a thin line between FA and 7th rounder. I say take the Two speedy RBs in the 7th and then you don't have to beat every other team that is trying to win them over to sign.

Our ST has been ATROCIOUS and adding those guys in the late round allows us to sift the draft vigorously for ST return players we so desperately need. You would also be able to tell in camp which guys can cut it and which guys can't.

OL Lee Ziemba has prototype size so we take a flyer on him to fill the RT applicant needs.

If you want to plug in any 3 7th rounders to your own liking or go with what the Fins did then fine by me. Lets wait and see how it unfolds.

Cheers,

I'd love to get that 25 million reward! Glad the SOB is dead, now finish off Iran and the rest!!!

I just heard Bin Laden was killed a WEEK AGO!

We've had his body for a week awaiting DNA results.

Ding Dong Da B i t c h is Dead!

Da B i t c h is DEAD!

God Bless America, Our Troops and Our President...Mission Accomplished!! Osama Bin Laden is worm food!!

We hit the mother load it looks like we hit Osama, Al Zawahiri and several Taliban leaders.

odin,

I guess we will have to wait and see if the Raiders use him on any ST returning Kicks or Punts.

I feel he has the hands, is more elusive, and will be better suited to run through, over and around would be tacklers than Gates.

Time will tell.

Cheers,

Guys, PRIORITY dictates, Osama kicked the bucket! Football can wait......I hope it's confirmed!

Rob,

I had it backwards.

Jones returned a lot more kickoffs and punts.

The most I could find out on Gates is that in 2007 he had 14 kickoff returns for 402 yards with a long return of 86 yards.

Your right again too, only time will tell!

THANK YOU armed forces, THANK YOU President Obama!!!

We all know this doesn't end the threat of terorism but the nation is grateful.

redsky,

Turn on CNN am watching as I type it`s confirmed Obama didn`t want to repease the statement until he got confirmation. It was a raid led by the 101st. airborne division, there awaiting confirmation on the rest of his party but un-officially there saying it`s Al Zawarahiri and several of the Taliban leadership.

You all really need to turn on CNN a crowd has already gathered outside the White House singing the National Anthem flags raised. It`s moving !!

VIVA OBAMA.....

It`s going to get interesting we apparently raided a mansion outside Islamabad, Pakistan were he was hidding without there knowledge, oh well why the hell were they leting him hide there, bring on Pakistan if they want some !!!!!!!!!

There wasn't much doubt he was in Pakistan but we'll have to see what intelligence shows. It's very possible Pakistani intelligence helped in this effort so I wouldn't necessarily damn them right now.

Aloco, not just Obama

obama has lips like a woman.

death is too good for this guy. he should have suffered first for about 20-30 years before dying. should've hung him by his nut$ack.

obama has lips like a woman.

He's all MAN as a president, though!

OBAMA IS THE MAN

jay,
can't disagree with that but i couldn't help notice that he looks like he can pucker up and kiss you like grandma

Ireland ad Tony better enjoy this season because they should be fired after last year and this draft...Ireland just proved he isn't qualified... Sugar coat it all you want guys..the Patty's took mallet for a reason..after Brady retires mallet will continue their dominant reign unfortunately for us....

Health Care Reform, Financial crisis over, Stock Market rallying, Bin Laden Dead = Obama reelected.

Was ready to DAMN the Pakistani`s, Wolf Blitzer can be a little irresponsible reporting that it was done without there knowledge only to have Obama set the record straight 10 min. later. A great day would love to shake the hand of our Soldiers who went on the raid snuffing out Bin Laden. I personally would have liked seeing him brought back to the States in shakles and then hung Saddam style but it will do none the less !!!

PFT reporting the real dirt on Mallett is gay sex, possibly a minor involved.

Obama did not kill Osama, this is an investigation Bush started and Obama, intelligently finished! It's not all about Obama, this is our military, the president might not have known everything about it, OUR US MILITARY CARRIED IT OUT

cowkilla,
the pats took mallet because belichek thinks he can do anything. his success has gone to his head and he's making some stupid moves. look at his draft. it was absolutely terrible. for once i was sitting there looking at their picks and saying, "what the hell are they thinking?" shane vereen was a reach, taken at least a round too early. stevan ridley was a HUGE reach. he was projected as a 5th-6th rd pick. now, people may argue that belichek had these two guys rated higher but why take them earlier than you need to. we'll see how this all plays out but belichek blew his chance to turn all of those picks into something that other teams would be dreading. instead, everyone is breathing a sigh of relief.
ireland took 4 players with the first four picks that will contribute to this team for some time. all four picks were solid producers in college and there were no "one year wonders" or projects among them. even clay is a guy that will most likely get some playing time this coming season. there is no way anyone can argue with this draft. it was one of the most solid drafts of any team this year.

man, herm edwards needs to take some downers. guy is just too hepped up about things.

Obama is not going to be re-elected

Dm1 dolphan.... You can't argue with what Bill has done in NE...I bet you that 80 percent of these so called reaches he did this year will turn into stars..or at least very good solid ball players. I'm not saying our draft was horrible, I like some of the picks..but I don't see why we had to trade into round two to get that RB...I saw him lasting until at least the 4th or 5th round for sure. I can't really agree with Tony and Jeff man, sorry. I'm not trying to argue with you at all, I just don't see any skill in our FO

where do these bloggers come from? now dm1 dolphan thinks he is a better drafter than belichek. a handful of bloggers here actually believe in their hallucinations. they say ireland knows nothing about drafting, now belicheck knows nothing, and they know better. scary how some can inflate their egos and actually think they have a clue based on nothing but poppycock media reports.

I'm not doubting our new RB either, he might prove to be a great back...but did we have to move to round two for him? I was expecting a boom of a playmaker for that move up to round two..that's all I'm saying my friend

Patient...last time I checked this was a blog that consists of opinions...no one here claimed to be a better drafter that bill man

But I bet you that my dead grandma can draft better than Tony and Jeff

the rebulicans once again will put up a candidate that appears only to the bible belt and racists. trump is a clown, nobody will take him seriously.

Sup RedSky, I haven't been around a lot recently, good to see ya man

Cowkilla, do you kill cows? What kind of name is that?

pf @ 12:42,
i never said ireland doesn't know anything about drafting. i thought last year's draft was pretty solid considering all of the players we got from it that are still on the team; not to mention the UFA's they signed. this year's draft was pretty solid also. it's other people on this blog who are saying ireland and sparano should be fired because of how bad the draft went. i don't believe the draft went bad at all. they did what they needed to do to make things better on offense. it would have been nice to see them have two more picks on offense but i'm not going to argue with it. they had good success in last year's draft and i think they will prove that this year's draft was a success also. espn's mcshay says the dolphins had the most questionable draft of all the teams in the afc east. kiper just said he thinks the pats did the worst job of all the afc east teams and even tedy bruchi agreed that belichek missed in this draft. like i said; let's see how it plays out but, i believe, belichek made some big mistakes in this draft. they gave him a C-.

I think I can draft better than Bellycheat,Ireland and SpOrano!

The mock I submitted here on the blog to Darryl Dunphy was as follows:

1. Nate Solder(Bellycheats 1st pick).

3. Daniel Thomas.

4. Edmund Gates.

This doesn't prove that I'm better, but I'm SURE I AM! I was hanging right with them.

Let me guess, you're going to say I just got lucky aren't you?

Now if only Obama can find and kill the guy who took away all the American jobs. Then raid his stash and bring them back!

who gives a flying fuhk what kiper says. you think any team would hire him to be a gm? ronald mcdonald has a better shot. he is just a typical media head blabbing to draw blog hits.

My first comment ever.. I think the dolphins did a good job in the draft, I don't think Mallet would have started over Henne , period.. Pouncey is a beast at a position that's been in limbo since I don't know when.. Now we have a line that has 3 first rd pix that most times dominate their apponent .. I think next year will be the first time in a long time that they won't need to draft in the o-line

Disclaimer:

I don't REALLY think I'm better than BELLYCHEAT(notice no mention of Ireland/SpOrano here).

Just couldn't pass up the chance to toot my own horn at what turned out to be one of my LUCKIEST MOCK DRAFTS EVER.

PS: I got the Reshad Jones pick right last year in what amounts to my second luckiest mock draft ever. WooWhooooo!

In 2008 I got Long and Henne correct as well. But Long was gimme in my opinion, so it didn't really count.

What up Odin....I'm going to try and go back and find all of the enteries from last week...I'll wait a few days to post them as I have a feeling tonight, and tommorow will be spent celebrating, and remembering...

"They can use the next two years to turn Him into the person they want Him to be"
Armando

Yeah, more like a 2nd rounder. I wish the Dolphins FO thought more like the Patriots FO, especially IFFFF we get Palmer :(

Lol...I did so many mocks under so many scenarios here. The one that I did under the lame rules I proposed(straight up no trades as the GM) I got Pouncet right...Big stretch, way to go out on a limb Dunphy. Other then that pick besides Jimmy Wilson(yup picked him in the pipe dream scenario) I got absolutley no players right..I suck. But Bin Laden got dead so right now I don't care who we picked.

The Patriots are a much more complete team.

Mallet will shine in the Pre Season and his trade value will skyrocket BEFORE the season even begins.

The same way Cassel looked like a Hall of Famer until traded to a mere mortal team.

Bellycheat knows ALL the angles.

Having said all that, I'm still glad we don't have Mallet here.

I think Miami ends up getting Orton, that'll make up for the last Purdue QB that we DIDN'T get...

Brady: So, yo-yo, you a rapper huh(giggles)?

Mallet: Yeah, yeah, I bust em Dawg, aight!?

Brady: Yeah good, go rap you a s s on over to my locker and carry my Shnizzles and Wiggity Gidgets out to the field.................Dawg!

I would love having orton here.

Too bad he'd cost way to much and they will never let him go anyways.

At least not this year.

"when you're sitting at 33 and jaball sheard is there and brooks reed is there and you've got a defense that is struggling at getting at the passer and is terrible on 3rd down you need someone to get to that passer to add that pressure and they didn't"

-tedy brushci discussing how bill belichek failed to address the pats need for a pass rusher in the draft.

FOX News will probably headline this as "Elderly Man On Dialysis Killed By Young African-American Male."

Fly Squasher.... Yes I do

Did not read the past posts but,WTF?,They don't have the luxury?New OC,not proven henne(cause he is not either way)bad or good ,bad OL,no running game, offense being in control of a dinosaur.I think they have there eyes on a QB for next years draft no matter what henne does this year.Sometimes its not about the now generation.

build what you got

I put lettuce on my head.

The draft hit all our needs. Henne will finally get a chance with the new players we drafted to help him along with the free agents we may sign. What were people expecting to happen by drafting Mallett? He was a player that had so many questions from his character to his play in big games. If he was so great, how come no other team that needed a QB drafted him before the third round? Also, we needed a RB much worse since we had none. Can't wait for the season to start.

there's a lot of if's for next season, the biggest of which r henne showing way more of his ups and way less of his downs, the enigma of what daboll will bring and whether he will get any time to train up the offense

not to mention the if's left over from last years draftees and this years many of whom are very exciting prospects, but only that

but for me its all about THE KING (HENNE) IS DEAD!, LONG LIVE THE KING! (HENNE)

at least they've taken the life support machine away but im still f**kn starving

Somebody feed Wolfy, before he flat-lines........

I do not like that Miami traded multiple picks to move up. Why not take chances on guys like Casey Matthews, D.J. Williams, and Mallett? Besides Pouncey, not a very good use of the draft in my opinion.

If I were a coach I would not admit to all the predictable offensive options given (not given) to Henne. They absolutely horse collared Henne. No audibles and ALL 7 step-drops. Unbelievable. Who runs an offense without any flexibility and adjustments? So basically we are starting over again. This is non-sense. I love all the weapons we have now: Clyde, Sheets, Thomas, Bess, Marshal, Clay and Hartline but it doesn't matter if we have absolutely no clue how to use them.
