What to do with Henne, and why not Ryan Mallett

Chad Henne is still Miami's only quarterback. But as I write in my column today, the Dolphins have a plan for getting better at that position this offseason that both includes Henne and replaces Henne.

Please check out the column because it gives you inside information on the changes the Dolphins are making to the offense to make Henne better. It also gives you an idea of what Miami is certain to attempt to replace Henne.

Having said that, the quarterback that everyone around here believes could have and should have been a Dolphin is Ryan Mallett.

Many of you wanted a quarterback in the draft. And I get it. Mallett had first-round talent with that great arm and accuracy. Mallett also could be had because he dropped like a lead pipe in water for reasons too many to name. That kind of quarterback talent doesn't fall to the third round very often yet that's exactly where Mallett and his Slim Shady personality fell.

The Dolphins get it, also.

General Manager Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano get it. They wanted the right quarterback in the draft, too. And they tried to make a play to get Ryan Mallett. Lacking a third-round pick, they tried to trade into the third round to get Mallett, according to a source.

They were not able to get in high enough fast enough.

"We were willing to take him, we just couldn't get our hands on him," the source with knowledge of the front office's thinking told me. "We tried, but we couldn't do it. He's going to be a good quarterback."

Instead the Dolphins are moving on because, for all the work they did on Mallett, for all the skills they know he possesses, they just didn't see him as a first- or second-round player. (Neither did anyone else, by the way.)

The Dolphins tell me they couldn't get a vision for Mallett to invest in him that early. To pick a player you have to know how he fits the team, how he fits the position. As a first or second round pick, that would mean Mallett would be your presumed starter immediately.

Proof: First-round pick Mike Pouncey and second-round pick Daniel Thomas are Miami's presumed starters at center and running back today.

The Dolphins weren't comfortable with that for Mallett. Call it gut. They just didn't feel this kid is ready to handle the daily grind of being an NFL starting QB -- something that reaches far beyond going on the field every Sunday and throwing the rock.

I'm told the Dolphins, as an organization, tried to find someone who has succeeded in the NFL that has a Ryan Mallett-type of personality and approach. They tried to find someone that has a character like Ryan Mallett and has succeeded in the NFL. Thinking ....

Thinking ...

Still thinking ....

I got it! Nobody!

Who does this kid remind you of that has been successful? Nobody! Not Manning, not Brady, not Brees, not anyone that came before. Well, he reminds me of Ryan Leaf but they were looking for someone successful.

That troubled the Dolphins' brass. No one felt strongly about his makeup.

"There are questions there," a source tells me.

I'm writing this having talked to Mallett once on the phone. I don't know him. I have no clue (no jokes, please.)

But the Dolphins were all over this kid. Ireland brought Mallett here. He went to see Mallett there. He went to dinner with him. He met him at the combine. He watched him play on tape and live. He wanted to get exposure to him. He evaluated the kid and the quarterback.

And there was just no comfort level there to invest on him in the first or second round. So it just didn’t happen.

It did happen for the Patriots in the third round. But remember, their situation is different. The Patriots are not looking for a starting quarterback. They don't need Mallett to come in and compete for a starting job.

He will not be their starter this year. He will not be their starter next year. Or the year after that, as long as Tom Brady remains healthy.

The Patriots, unlike the Dolphins, have the luxury of remaking Mallett in their image. They can use the next two years to turn him into the person they want him to be. They can store him away rather than thrust him into a starter's limelight where all the pressure and expectations are found.

That's a wonderful luxury to have. The Dolphins didn't have that luxury.

So they go in another direction. They have their plan for getting the quarterback position right.

Thanks for stating & being able to pick up on the obvious garbagePlate LOL

Right on Jeff: Better to not pull a panic move, i.e. Christian Ponder at #12.

I give the front office credit as well. Minn may have set themselves back a few years

Craig,,,,ouch. Don't do it man! :) No need for name calling, you had a good debate going and then BAM! I'm not sure who started the name calling but it doesn't matter, we're all better than that (I hope) except Genius.

Jeff,

I see your point but if TS let others bully him around, rookie coach or not he is just not the guy. If he can't deal with Henning and Parcells he can't properly deal with a whole team of players either. A leader LEADS, and doesn't follow and isn't a yes man. He just doesn't have the experience to lead plain and simple, nor the balls. He let Marshall get away with those two stupid fouls without even benching him for a play while he benched other players for far less. Not good. I could go on and on, but no use in repeating what we already know.

I guess we'll know what people think of our draft after the vegas over/under line for wins next year comes out. Last year it was 7 and everyone including myself thought that was low. We'll see what they think this year. I bet it'll be 5 or 6.

"Thanks for all the info, I'll have to remember that all if I'm ever on Jeopardy."

Or maybe just remember you have a family, a life, and your own real problems before you "cry" the next time over the Dolphins. Woops I mean you used to cry but then you realized it was pointless so now you just get angry and resentful.

I always read about people wanting a "franchise QB". Which is dumb anyway, since you dont have a franchise QB until he plays well enough to be considered one, regardless of draft position.

Anyway, the odds of drafting a "franchise QB" go up significantly next year. It's always a crapshoot, but the fact is next years stable of QB's is better. More legit 1st round talent. I really think this years draft class is gonna look alot like '99. One good one will emerge (like McNabb), the rest will go the way of Cade McNown and Akili Smith

0x80,,,right. No I exactly agree with you, he should have stood up and that was his fault. I'm just saying being a rookie coach and a fairly bright guy I think or hope he can look back and learn from those mistakes. Don't worry bout the players, they love him.

What on God's Green earth are you talking about? LMAO Nevermind, I don't want to know!

Joe I'm not going to continue this all day but what did I assume? I said the Dolphins seem to effect your life more than they do mine. If that's an assumption it is based on exactly what you told me. For one to assume I would have had to come up with that on my own. Who cares though. I'm squashing this now. Original point was you think the Dolphins won't be more competitive this season and I think they will correct? So lets put a pin in it and talk at the end of the season if we have one. Go Dolphins!

Hahahaha I'm not talking about anything Joe. Just being an idiot today! Your cool and I respect your opinions, always have. Our original points while debatable are in no way fact. Looking forward to seeing who is right. And God I hope I am as I'm sure you will as well. If you're right then football will be boring for me this season.

If you go back and look at my ORIGINAL post, you will see when I was talking about Vontae Davis in brackets I have the wonder POTENTIAL when talking about him being elite. Most people would understand that to mean 'he has the potential to be elite' but not you. As usual, you misquote me and say I said he was already elite. I'm not sure where you went to school but you should go back and demand to be educated on the finer points of reading.

Posted by: Craig M | May 02, 2011 at 02:18 PM

Here we are back at Square 1 Hilarious! Where you fail to realize that I knew EXACTLY what you said. If you actually read my posts I stated we were talking about elite players, not potentially elite. How could I tell you that if I didn't understand what you meant? LMAO You say I need to go to school? LMAO

You failed to understand it when I said it & you continue to. I'm sure you will still fail to realize it now! You have an uncanny ability to make yourself look illiterate.

FYI, if I'm a moron, you are a genius! And we all know that IS NOT the case!

Jeff/GP,

As much as guys like to think I'm married to Henne all I've ever wanted is for them to improve what's around. Bad play-calling, porous OL, lack of running game, lacl of a pass-catching TE....they've changed all of those things, except maybe the pass-catching TE. I'm not convinced yet that Clay will be the answer, so hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. All I have wanted is for those things to change and for Henne to have a chance. We've now heard stories that the defence knew what ws coming at them last year and now we hear defences used to target a spot on the field where Henne would be. Seems to me there's a lot of truth to what we've always believed. If Henne doesn't show the progress we need this year, I am completely fine with going and finding a better young QB next year. I get it.

Garbage, your point about next years crop of young QBs being better was excellent. I didn't see it in this year's crop and have always held to the belief that next year's will be better.

Hahahaha I'm not talking about anything Joe. Just being an idiot today! Your cool and I respect your opinions, always have. Our original points while debatable are in no way fact. I'm an idiot everyday! As you can see, Craig really enjoys it! hahahaha Like I said, I would love to eat crow if Miami is better than 8-8. I don't wanna see my team suck every season. I just have a realistic outlook on things. :)

Joe,

Go pound sand bud!!....you're a waster of time and I'm not the only one who thinks that. Maybe if enough people tell you that you'll get it.

You've been saying that for months Craig, no need for grandstanding! FYI, what is a waster of time? LMFAO

You continue to try to battle wits with me. Then whine when you look like a fool. When are you gonna be a man of your word & ignore me, who is obviously of superior intellect than you?

Mean what you say & say what you mean! IGNORE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

I think the Pats stocked their 1st and 2nd rounds for next year so they can draft their Brady QB replacement.

Craig, we've always been on the same page about Henne. I'm with you. Just was making the point the prudent move was not picking a QB this year, for a few different reasons.

Patience is usually rewarded, if we dont get rewarded with better play from Henne, we'll get rewarded with a better group of young QB's to choose from next April

If taking a QB means they must step in and be starter material right away then what was the deal with the Pat White pick. I mean he was selected before Henne right so shouldn't he have been presumed to be the heir apparent instead of Henne, just asking.

henne was taken a full year before pat white.

Edmund Gates looks like Davone Bess with a super charger gear.

When you consider the compettition level he faced, you want to see him dominate. That's just what he did. Looked like a man among boys.

Runs the WR screens as good as anybody I've seen.

He faced some press coverage, kind of weak jams, but dispensed with the defender and ran right past the safeties almost everytime.

Also looks like a natural at finding the soft spot in zone coverage. It's either that or he was rounding off his routes-lol.

Made the tough catches and fights for the ball. Plays with an attitude. I don't think Gates is a one trick speed pony either. He's a baller.

no way gates will ever be the route runner that bess is. gates is more straight speed, with a quicker start than ginn.

why I FEEL I READ ALL TESE POSTS LAST YEAR ABOUT OUR NEW PLAYERS ............. CAN YOU GUYS BE CREATIVE AND SAY SOME THING DIFFERENT ?

did you see the story on PFT that mallett was over an hour late for a meeting with the Titans also?
Someone needs to get this guy a watch.

do ya reckon they'll keep both marlon m and roberto w and if not who's toast? (sorry about the food ref),

i think i'd rather lose one of our project te's than one of them 2 early as both seem promising, maybe tradable

although we need a vet to compete with henne i still don't want the fo trading next years picks for them, so somebody half decent needs to get cut asap

i'm worried they're gonna keep pennington hanging around, and this is not good for Henne growing leadership balls

gp - with u on the patience man

only probs i have with the draft, minor - trading up for dt but hopefully the fo know what they're doing

i always liked kaep, will be interesting to see how he gets on in sf, if harbaugh had come to miami maybe kaep would have too!!!

WHY DO I FEEL SPARANO AT HOME RIGHT NOW MAKING GARLIC MEATBALL WITH HIS SECERT SAUCE .

The comparison I was making to Bess wasn't aimed at route running. To say he won't EVER be the route runner Bess is, is a bit premature though.

To me Gates has all of Bess' shiftiness with an extra gear on the top end.

He's definitely got straightline speed, but he's not limited in any way. The guy has moves, shiftiness and plays tough as hell.

So like I said, he looks like Davone Bess with top end speed to boot.

Maybe the bset thing about him that I've seen is his ability to go up and fight for the ball. A little Marshall like in my opinion.

How can Henne not improve? He's already proven that he can hit Bess with some precision strikes. Other than that, now all he has to do is just throw it up down the left or right sideline. Marshall or Gates will go up and take it away from defenders.

Gates is my favorite pick of this draft.

...Gates has a way to go as far as route running(so is the scouting report. I would be lying if I told you I have watched one minute of stuff on line) Our rookie recievers last year could not run routes,or beat jams. The information about the passing attack being limited to 5 step drops could have played a factor.

This 5 step drop rule that the brilliant Henning set. Makes what Brandon Marshall did last year even more impressive. Considering he was usually facing a corner with saftey help. He would have to beat the corner, then run his route off the beaten defender. With limited time, this made Marshall have to understand really quick where the route needed to go. Any little hickup and the play would be nulified.

But back to Gates. What we need from him is the ability to beat defenders off the line. I'm sure the Phins see ability there, or we would have gone another route. If Gates can do this, his speed alone is worth the pick. It will also free up Hartline who is a solid route runner to get into more open spaces. I see these two lining up on the same side. Add Bess to the mix, and we should see a mix of a lot of 4 reciever sets.

Depending on Gates progression as a player, I don't think that he starts or is the number 2 reciever. The one miss in this draft was a selection of a tight end. I thought that the 2 tight end set was a formation we would use more often. If Clay is that guy, alright. He would be a matchup win in the passing game. I'm not sure he is yet the blocker you want yet. But nothing says he cannot learn.

ODIN,

WHAT THE DEAL WITH HENNE HITTING BESS IF EVERY TIME BESS DROPS THE BALL ?

IS FASANO STILL A DOLPHIN ? I HEAR A ROUMER ABOUT HIM BEING SHOPPED FOR A TRADE .

V.CAREY WILL BE GONE NEXT 2 WEEKS WITH MR CROWDER .

WHY DO I FEEL SPARANO AT HOME RIGHT NOW MAKING GARLIC MEATBALL WITH HIS SECERT SAUCE .

Lil Aloco, Your thoughts on the draft?????

DD/CUBAN////////// MY THOUGHTS...... I HAVE NONE UNTIL OUR DENTIST LOOK AT THESE AVERAGE PLAYERS WE SELECTED .........

AS FOR MOTHER'S DAY , I LOVE WHEN I TAKE MY OUT AND PAY THE BILL FOR EGGS BENEDICT ..............

DD/ DO YOU SEND YOUR MOM ANY THING ?

TAKE MY MOTHER OUT AND

Ive worked for the dolphins in the mid 80s with bob tesher a gd freind and most people have no clue about the inner workings of the draft. First off pouncey was too early but only bc they couldnt find a trade down partner. Thomas is a great rb idv preffered ingram but this team is getting better, gates will actually catch it if he gets behind the defense, clay will be a cris cooley, had the best hands in the draft. Mallet? hes not even gonna play for NE, brady said yday hel play 6 more yrs so mallet wont even see the feild before he bcomes a FA. Key is to let henne play and not micromanaging him so hel hit the deep balls and open wrs, and if he cant do it this yr, we will finish high in the draft and we trade whatever we have to get luck or barkley. then we'l be set

LOL @ Lil Aloco........You gotta love this guy...No H0mo.....

STEVE ,

YOU WORKED FOR THE FINS IN THEIR WORST YEARS SINCE MID 08s , SO I CAN'T TAKE YOUR VIEWS AS SOME THING SPECIAL .

LIl Aloco, Ashley's(Empress of pineapples) Birthday is tommarrow, What should I cook????/

ALoco...Yes I sent my mom a plane ticket to come to Montana in 2 weeks...First class even.

Odin...Great video. I'm not concerned about his speed, or even the routes we will have him running. What I want to see, And I'm sure this is what the FO examined. Is his physicality. Will he be able to handle bigger, and stronger DB's. How does he do getting off the line, what does he need to work on to master this, or at least get better. The speed you cannot teach, and was a need that has been addresed. It is just the small techincal things that are actually very important. Like I said I think the FO is comfertable with this area of his game, or they would not have taken him.

Thanks for the insight Steve @5:16 PM.......

NICE DD....... MOTHERS ARE WAY BETTER THAN FATHERS,THE TAKE GREAT CARE OF YOU WHILE DAD WORKING HARD AT HIS REMOTE CONTROL TV.................

CUBAN,

ODIN,

I DIDN'T BROKE ANY THING .

What's up guys! Odin, Darryl, Aloco, Cuban, check in....I'm doing roll call, anything new?

Cuban, the Empress likes Cuban sausage for her birthday! If you can't deliver it I will, I was born there....just trying to help, sir, no offense made!

Been looking at some Undrafted free agents-

I really like this running back from Northern illinois---5"7 205--4.5 speed runs reall tough, and plays faster than 4.5

Chad Spann

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU2b7G2Oocg

Reminds me a little of Ahmad bradshaw

I'll try it again..

Odin...The one thing, and you made note of it. I only counted 1 time where Gates was touched off the line. He was just flying passed defenders. Obviously he was much better then everyone on the field, and he did totaly dominate.

What I also noticed is how Gates was moved around to catch the ball in spaces where he could run(when he wasn't getting behind everyone). Hopefully we use him like this as well. Have some plays designed for him to get him into open areas. I don't know the name of the route. But for example. Put him in motion, where he can get off the line without any interference. A play where he is running to one side of the field, and the outside reciever crosses him. Clearing out a space for him to catch it and run. This is also an example of a three step drop. Quick, and the ball is away. Let Gates use his atheletisim after the catch.

This is my only concern. How will Gates react to the pysicality at this level. He isn't going to get free releases like college. Some of that was just Gates was so fast, that the corners had to have that cushion. Plus their skill levels made it impossible to press him as much as they would have liked. Not Gates' fault. He dominated like he should have. Now that the playing field is a equaled, we will see how he does. If put into the right situations to succeed. I think Gates will be a tremendous asset to the offense. He will learn, and get better. we have ourselves a player folks!

path to the draft is talking about miami's qb plans.

Redsky,

Now that the draft is over, the lockouts really grating on me.

It's like we all pitched in on some liquor and the car breaks down on the way to the store!

Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Can't somebody fix this fuking thing!

Darryl, Gates = next Hester more!!!

The one thing that would make me insanely happy is to see Gates run on punts and KR up the field. As long as he doesn't pull a Teddy Ginn and dash towards the sidelines it would be a tremendous upgrade to our ST unit

Personally I think all QB debate is sensless at this point. I'm glad Miami didnt reach for a QB. Henne aint good but at the same time he didnt have OL-OC helping either . Hopefully with the Labor unrest and memories of last year the kid will step up. I think we drafted well considering and I think we will be ok this year assuming there is football this year
