When the draft resumes this afternoon, I'm hoping the Dolphins land a certain RB that I've had my eyes on for a while whose name I will not type here because, believe it or not, I've recently learned at least one rival AFC team reads this blog for updates on what the Dolphins are thinking -- obviously not recognizing that I don't know squat about squat.
Joke's on them!
Nonetheless, I won't mention this RBs name at this point, not that it's a big secret.
Lookit, the Dolphins need speed today. It is lacking for them on offense. It is lacking on defense, although not to the same degree. It is definitely lacking on special teams.
Speed, speed, speed, speed, speed, speed!
When Bill Parcells first started constructing this team it started looking like a mirror image of the 1990 New York Giants for a while there. The Dolphins were big, hulking, and bulking. This team looks very imposing in the airport.
But the game has changed since 1990 and is played on the field not in an airport. So the plodding Fins have some adjusting to do.
They need speed to be more dynamic. They need speed to make sure those kickoff returns and punt returns stop going 90 yards in the other direction. They need speed to do something that we haven't seen around here a lot lately: Blow somebody up with a 90-yard punt return of their own, or hit them on a 74-yard run, or throw a 68-yard bomb over the top of their defense, or return an interception 101 yards.
So my hope is today is about turning the Incredible Hulk into Flash. Or something like that.
The hope for today is a:
Change of pace fast RB.
A return man. Must be ... fast.
(Hopefully the Dolphins can get two for one by having the fast RB also be a fast return guy.)
OLB help to punish Tom Brady and Slim Shady now that they're boys in New England.
Maybe a NT. He's the only one that doesn't need to be fast. Don't sleep on the NT, by the way.
[NOTE: Live blog happening right here at noon. Yesterday was the biggest day on this blog in all of 2011. Enormous! Thank you. And thanks to that team for checking in. I don't know anything.]

Our 6th and both 7s for one of KCs two 5th rounders?

"Angel" Williams seems more like the bruising RB this regime would like to acquire to get back to the running game & smash mouth football
and of course release the aging and now mouthy locker room cancer, ... Ricky Williams

Your true colors come out you're a JETFAN!stra8balla........ Jets just showed us how to pick a rb. Bilal Powell led the Big east in rushing. Every down back but extremely explosive...fast.quick feet..strong and can elude. Dude will get carries from day one and be a game breaker. Headaches on the way for our defense trying to chase this kid down.

The only thing Gates & Ginn have in common is both names begin with G. Gates soft hands Ginn hands of stone.

Amen finatic13!

Good pick Denver! A TE other that DJ Williams or Virgil Green. Yeah!
Posted by: MojoMark | April 30, 2011 at 01:37 PM
I am unquiet. Supposing we sign a good FA QB the only backup will be Henne(Lord deliver us!). We need another at least efficient QB.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 30, 2011 at 01:37 PM
Bogota,
can't trade both 7's because one is compensatory.
Posted by: Matthew Stevens | April 30, 2011 at 01:38 PM
garbage
you and finatic (who takes anything from espn pundits as fact) can be happy and bathe yourselves in completion percentages if thats what makes you two happy.
i like winners, players that rise to the occasion to win the game. sanchez did that several times last year while henne was lost as a baby goat against the worse teams in the league at home.
i thought henne would be way better than sanchez in terms of win/loss record. he hasn't been and and is the only relevent stat.
Posted by: scout9 | April 30, 2011 at 01:38 PM
Yes good catch...maybe the 6th and 7th then...I'm hoping.
Posted by: Bogota Phin Fan | April 30, 2011 at 01:39 PM
armando,
hypothetically speaking if we were to pick up sproles or bush
do you believe that daniel thomas can carry most of the load? being that sproles or reggie are not every down backs
shouldnt we shoot for someone like deangelo?
Posted by: SureShockMiami | April 30, 2011 at 01:39 PM
Any remember Ginn's 40 time? To put Gates' speed in perspective...

Give Henne one more year, and if it doesnt work out we can get Palmer next year aas a FA as I dont see him retiring and I dont see anyone giving up a #1 for him. Henne isnt that bad, do you guys forgett the other QBs weve had other than 1 year of Pennington who threw 4 pics in our only playoff game the last like 8 years and the one above average year of Ferrotte. He isnt that bad, He's better than Sanchez, V. Young, Hasslebach, McNabb, who else?
Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:41 PM
As much as Home has been #1 fan of undrafted FA slot receiver
"Simply The Bess"
There is no need to have Bess return punts anymore
Punt returning is now Gates job to lose
"Simply The Bess" is now one of the best slot receivers in the NFL and WILL BE surpassing Wes Welker this season
Good move on the Draft so far by Miami
Posted by: Home | April 30, 2011 at 01:41 PM
Brandon Marshall has other things he's addressing right now.
Posted by: Armando Salguero | April 30, 2011 at 01:41 PM
Gates was quoted as "never lost a foot race"?
How long before he hears from Chris Johnson? lol
Posted by: Matthew Stevens | April 30, 2011 at 01:41 PM
So far got to say I am happy with the Draft. Given the labor unrest and what little we had to work with as well as talent available I think we did well. Only time will tell

Most NFL scouts said their stopwatches timed Ted Ginn Jr. in 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash during his private workout in Columbus, Ohio. Ginn made three tries, and his father, Ted Ginn Sr., said his son went in 4.38, 4.40 and 4.41. Ginn's agent was not permitted to attend but said Ginn's times were all 4.3s. His father, Ted Ginn Sr., said his son was "75 to 80 percent." -- Akron Beacon-Journal

ah Thomas and Harper gone
Posted by: beerphin | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
exactly what have I taken from ESPN pundits as fact? If you're talking about someone's height, yep, guilty! you got me. I trust that ESPN has the correct stats on someones height. Turns out they were right and you've been wrong about everything you've written on here all day.
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
GarbagePlate,
I like Toddman too but not as an everydown back. He is smallish, with not game breaking speed but good speed. I don't see him as an every down back but ya never know.
As far as Daniel Thomas. My opinion is just "my opinion" but in order I liked
Mark Ingram
Daniel Thomas - DOLPHIN!
Mikel LeShoure
Ryan Williams
Thomas is everything Ireland said. He is big and physical but has the ability to break runs and his versatility as a pass catcher at 230 is a much better value then Taiwan Jones or Toddman who look like the type of backs who get touched and fall down.
For every Jamaal Charles and Chris Johnson there are 20 to 30 backs who can't stay healthy, stay durable or productive enough because of their size to make it long term. I love the Daniel Thomas pick!

Have u seen the unbelievable shape "Simply The Bess" has gotten himself into this off season
His is much thicker and his legs are def much larger
Looking forward to seeing rookie WR Gates open up the passing game for B-Marsh & Simply The Bess
Posted by: Home | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
I believe Ted Ginn's 40 time was 4.38 or 4.39
Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
ARMANDO
WHY IS DJ WILLIAMS STILL AVAILABLE. I THOUGHT HE'D BE GONE BY THE THIRD ROUND
Posted by: tommyac | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
Some one should go to the Jets Sanchez Romance Site!
Posted by: morphin | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
Thanx Bogota!! So that means Gates is fast as all heck!! (hope he doesn't use that speed t reach sidelines like Ginn)
Posted by: robbyhernz | April 30, 2011 at 01:43 PM
tedd ginn 4.38
Posted by: SureShockMiami | April 30, 2011 at 01:44 PM
I like Lee Smith for our TE
Posted by: beerphin | April 30, 2011 at 01:45 PM
some of you want to give henne forever to show he can play. i don't. some of you are giggle happy to think we are almost there. i'd rather be there than be giggle happy about being 'close'.
Posted by: scout9 | April 30, 2011 at 01:45 PM
lol I know garbage, i even said i was being sarcastic about ESPN always being right. wow what an idiot, you are a true Dolphin fan, hes not a Jet fan, only a dolphin fan would beat his own team down so much. Other than like 5% of the Dolphin fans the fins have the worst fans in the league.
Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:46 PM
Mando,
You think Miami trades into the 5th to address the TE position or draft a Derrick Locke out of Kentucky type of RB???
Posted by: Zach | April 30, 2011 at 01:46 PM
SureShock, Sean Payton was on NFL Net and said he's spoken to Reggie Bush and told him he'll be back with the Saints.

The Atlanta Falcons Play 60 commercial never gets old...thing is I can see Arthur Blank riding the team bus and not a limo.
Posted by: Bogota Phin Fan | April 30, 2011 at 01:46 PM
Scout, he's had 1 full season as a starter!! Chill out--the NFL is complex!!
Posted by: robbyhernz | April 30, 2011 at 01:47 PM
I love our picks but ultimatley our season will go as far as our QB play. Henne better understand that this is his last chance literally since he's in a contract year. He better play smarter with the ball and act like more of a leader. Lets go phins!!
Posted by: BoulderPhinFan | April 30, 2011 at 01:47 PM
It's not raw speed the most important but the separation the receiver gets from the defender.
Posted by: oscar canosa | April 30, 2011 at 01:47 PM
scout go look at Manning his first two years, go look at brees his first two years, there are only a handfull of QBs in ALL of NFL history that are good in their first couple of years in the league. Do your homework guy.
Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:48 PM
NOEL DEVINE!!!!
Posted by: fly high | April 30, 2011 at 01:48 PM
Yes he's slow but he uses his hands to catch the ball and he is argueably the best blocking TE in the draft. 6'6
Posted by: beerphin | April 30, 2011 at 01:48 PM
If I recall correctly...Mark Duper was a 4.28 guy...no?
Posted by: Bogota Phin Fan | April 30, 2011 at 01:49 PM
OL- Long,Carey,Jerry,Icognito,Solai,Pouncey
Offensive Weapons -Bess,Marshall,Hartline,Wallace,Moore,Gates,Hilliard,Cobbs,Thomas,Fasano
QB - Henne
From this perspective compared to last year I think we are already in better shape and still have rest of draft and FA to go
Posted by: Richard | April 30, 2011 at 01:49 PM
Andy, Todman does come in under 200lbs, but he's tough. To me he just looks very natural running the ball. Always going forward, he can kinda slide sideways. He's got some Thurman Thomas characteristics. Generally you need 2 backs nowadays anyway
I'll be pulling for Thomas, i just wasnt that high on him. I liked Williams better, but we werent getting him. Hope he proves me wrong.
Like the other 2 picks, though
Posted by: GarbagePlate | April 30, 2011 at 01:49 PM
I like that Locke kid. I also like that he played against top competition.
Posted by: Armando Salguero | April 30, 2011 at 01:49 PM
scout, did you really think one of these rookies between mallet, or dalton or kaepernick was gonna come in and beat henne? You're dreaming. I don't know if henne is the future but what I do know is none of those 3 are gonna be as productive as henne next year.
Posted by: BoulderPhinFan | April 30, 2011 at 01:49 PM
Toddman and Scott are not backs that offer the explosive play. Workhorse types like the back we just drafted. Scott timed fast but has no lateral agility and is not quick enough to make any one miss. North/south guy with a little straight line speed but is stiff and not agile.
We are out of speed options are rb...Quizz and Devine both had poor times especially to be so small. They won't run away from many db's at this level. Dion Lewis is shifty but not really fast. Get a te who can stretch the seam and call it a draft
Posted by: stra8balla | April 30, 2011 at 01:49 PM
don shula said "if henne has got something to show, he should be showing it by now"
henne was a 4 year college starter, received a yeare of tutoring in the nfl and has since played for 2 seasons. meanwhile, a whole handful of rookie qbs that started day one in the years since henne has been drafted are playing like long term starters. henne was benched twice. how many times were flacco ryan sanchez bradford stafford ect benched? hint: 0
Posted by: scout9 | April 30, 2011 at 01:50 PM
Solia.....you mean Carey
Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:50 PM

Was the 7th traded yesterday a future? Because Im seeing we still have 2 7ths?

Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:50 PM
Not a big Henne fan but he did have a crappy OC and the OL couldnt hold together worth crap
Posted by: Richard | April 30, 2011 at 01:51 PM
we had 3 7's
Posted by: finatic13 | April 30, 2011 at 01:51 PM
Mando, who are you talking about?
Posted by: BoulderPhinFan | April 30, 2011 at 01:51 PM
Armando with all due respect please leave B-Marsh alone
HE WAS THE VICTIM OF A VIOLENT CRIME
A VICTIM
U GET THAT, HUH?
Armando if u get stabbed in the gut after doing your radio show tomorrow, should us fans say that u r of bad character
maybe u should be fired from your show and fired from the newspaper because u got stabbed and are the victim of a violent crime
Now does that make any sense?
That is essentially what u r saying about B-Marsh
He has beahaved much better than 90% of the folks in South Florida and contributed quite a bit to the community
Why dont u lay off him and stop creating negative press for him !?
He was a victim
U Get That, Huh!
Posted by: Home | April 30, 2011 at 01:51 PM
tommy, D.J. Williams is only 6-2ish. Also, not a burner.
I like him a lot but most teams want a 6-4 to 6-6 TE. And the Dolphins want them to block and I'm not sure he's a great blocker. He's more a downfield pass catcher.
Posted by: Armando Salguero | April 30, 2011 at 01:51 PM
DJ Williams is still available because he is a little stiff in the open field and there are questions about his blocking and ability to be a seam threat. Not as fast as some of the TE's from smaller schools. He has good hands and was productive in a very good offense at Arkansas but fast...not really.
Posted by: stra8balla | April 30, 2011 at 01:51 PM
THOMAS & SPROLES IN BACKFIELD AT SAME TIME. DEFENSES WILL BE THINKING LIKE THIS:R THEY GONNA RUN HARD UP MIDDLE OR FAST OFF TACKLE,WATCH GATES OVER TOP,UH OH WHERE IS MARSHALL & BESS,S#$^% TD FASANO OR LEE SMITH OVER THE MIDDLE.THIS IS WHAT DEFENSES ARE GONNA BE FACING AGAINST US.
