Breakout players for 2011 -- whenever that starts

Before we head into the weekend (which some fools are claiming will be the final one as May 21 is supposed to be the end of the world) I want to give you my personal list of Dolphins players I believe should be on everyone's list of breakout players for the 2011 season.

...Whenever that 2011 season gets underway.

Breakout players are defined as players who have yet to show their signature talent. They are young players who have much potential but little in the way of stellar production to show for that potential. Cameron Wake had a breakout season in 2010.

The next Cameron Wake for the Dolphins?

My list:

1. Guard John Jerry: He was a starter much of last season but struggled finding his niche and then keeping it because he battled a sickness and that kept him from perfecting his technique and he wasn't strong enough and he probably needed a lesson in being a professional. Enough of that. It's the second season. The hope is he's working to get stronger as prescribed by the club's strength and conditioning coaches and he is going to get every opportunity to be a starter -- with every opportunity being defined as he's a starter Day 1 of training camp and then it's up to him to keep the job.

2. Cornerback Vontae Davis: Next season will be his third as a starter. It's time to live up to the grand potential he showed as a rookie. Davis is easily the most physical of all Miami corners. He works hard to get his body right. He works at the art of playing CB. But last season he had only one interception to show for his trouble. He had four interceptions as a rookie. You might claim he wasn't picked on nearly as much as he was as a rookie and that is correct. But he was beaten for at least four TD passes. That's not the ratio of interceptions-to-TDs anyone expects from a star CB. And make no mistake, Davis has the potential to be a star. It's time for him to reach that potential.

3. Free safety Reshad Jones: This kid is a ball magnet. He always seems to be around the football. The football always seems to be around him. It stands to reason the Dolphins, who want more game-changing plays in their defensive backfield, will give such a player an opportunity to win a starting job. If Jones continues to show that ball magnet ability, it would then make sense he bursts out of his role as a special teams player and situational player.

4. Wide receiver Marlon Moore: You cannot coach speed. Moore has it. He showed that potential with that 57-yard TD catch against Oakland last year. Coaches saw that and their eyes popped out. Unfortunately, Moore wasn't ready for more work. The following week he dropped a couple of passes and his chance for more playing time diminished. But a young wide receiver typically makes the biggest leap in ability between his first and second year. Moore is getting ready for that second year. A caveat: Most NFL wide receivers get plenty of work in that offseason between their roookie and second seasons. Moore isn't getting that with the Dolphins due to the lockout.

5. Defensive end Phillip Merling: Coaches were hoping for big things from Merling at this time last year. He was seemingly starting to figure out how to be a professional. Then he blew out his Achilles' tendon jogging on his own a month before training camp. He had to wait until the final five games to work himself off the Non-football Injury list. It wasn't a total loss, but it wasn't what everyone expected, either. Merling gets another chance at it this year -- hopefully while completely healthy. A big hint whether he'll be primed for a big year is how well Merling practices when training camp opens. He is known for at times not being a great worker in practice.

HONORABLE MENTIONS -- Koa Misi, Jared Odrick: Misi collected 4.5 sacks as a rookie mostly on sheer desire and refusal to quit. He was playing the SOLB for the first time in his career. He was playing in the NFL for the first time. He was probably a little undersized in that he needed to improve his upper body strength. As for technique ... what technique? The assignment this offseason and training camp is to address all those. We'll see the results.

Odrick was an instant starter at RDE. That says something about the kid. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, they were not able to see the fruits of his potential. After a solid training camp, Odrick broke his leg in the season-opener. Four weeks later, he sustained an injury to the other leg that forced him out the remainder of the season. He gets a new start in 2011. The club has high hopes for him. So do I.

Check back Monday for more Dolphins information and analysis. Also, please follow me on twitter. Finally, I guarantee you the world will not end on Saturday. I have a Most Highly placed Source.

Aloco

You are thinking of 'Sicko', a different movie of his.

DB

No congressman would vote for war if it required their own children of age to enlist as well. Humans are by nature greedy and selfish, and possibly just not capable of governing themselves with honesty and integrity.

ALOCO....

Its been 72 hours...AND THEN SOME......

there is no CBA in place...NO FOOTBALL......

What's the deal......

You predict it would all be fixed in 72 hrs......96 hrs ago.......

KRIS,

THAT WAS FAKE ALoco .i thought YOU WOULD KNOW BY NOW ,FREIND .

0X80,

YOU R RIGHT . I WILL WATCH THE NEW ONE ON NETFLEX...I HAVE FREE ONE MONTH MEMEBERSHIP .

Take for instance George Bush, and he isnt the only example. It was reported on Yahoo just yesterday he has made $millions already in post presidential paid speeches alone.

Ex pesident have businnes ventures making millions a year, then they make millions in paid post presidential speaking engaements. Now on top of it all, they recieve lifetime healthcare plus a $250,000 a year lifetime stipend from the American people.

Not once have I heard of any of our very rich ex American presidents ever turning down these lifetime stipends coming off the backs of the hard working American people. I also would be extremely safe to suggest none ever will.

However, I do fully agree with lifetime secret service protection. Because assasinating a former American president is equal to an unprovoked attack on America itself.

DB,

PLEASE CHANG THE SUBJECT,WE ALL KNOW THAT CRAP YOU R TALKING ABOUT .TALK ABOUT OUR NEW PLAYERS ..IT'S A FOOTBALL BLOG .

Here's a good one....

It costs $150 for an MRI in Japan (Country Wide)

But here, in the America, MRIs can be as expensive as $4000. (Depending on where you get it done.)

Now..Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. Is there really a difference between their MRI equipment and ours??

No.

The answer is that our system is so 'laissez faire' that companies are encouraged to charge 'whatever they can get' for our health procedures.

We've crossed some line in this country where it is assumed that investors will make money off the condition of our physical health.

It almost makes you wonder if the world really IS coming to an end.
.
.

YAZZI;;;;;; TWO THING THE PRIVATE SECTOR SHOULD BE OUT OF ;;;;;;

1-HEALTH CARE .

2- PUBLIC SAFTY .

Hey...

lay off DB

He hasn't used the phrase 'L O L' in over an hour!
.
.

Davis, Smith, Wallace, Ness and Jones all appear ready to break out. Hoping for Odrick and Edds to flash. Merling needs to be a beast ON the field. Langford, Soliai and McDaniel have shown improvement. The potential for this team is huge. I really like our young players, and they will only get better with experience.

The key will be Henne, young man. Take my QB, please. But all seriousness aside, why not give Henne a break and see what he can do with interior linemen who can block and an offensive scheme that isn't quite so moribund? I like him as our QB, given the other choices. Signs are pointing to him loosening up a little. He got married, right? I hear he's even growing his hair out. What's next, replacing his positronic matrix with human emotion?

OK, YAZZI ..... MESSAGE RECEIVED .

Hey Yazzi,

I just tried to spell it backwards and still ended up with LOL! Geesh, we have guys in our "think tanks" with IQ's of 200 and more. Do you think we can get them to work on having LOL not equal LOL backwards and forwards? LOL....

And I thought I'd I'd put my two cents in...

It has been my observation as of late, now that I'm living outside of the country, that the U.S. has been moving away from itself. That there are two different societies that exist that I was oblivious to, up until this year. The first society I refer to it as the Warlock society...this is comprised of all people who think their vote will magically bring things into balance when speaking of terms of government and accountability, and change. These are the same people that sit in coffee shops and gripe and talk politics and spew out things they think and heard, or believe when they were spoon fed this same opinion by some political analyst, politician, or news personality I.E. people on this thread, me. This group is comprised of all political party members, one way or another, and include most of the general population.
The other society I refer to as the Warlord society...these are the people in action working for their own interest and the interest of who ever makes them the most money or comes up with the best offer, or has the most similar ideology to their own...they have no affiliation even though these people wear buttons and symbols that say the work for one side or the other. The truth is politics has become a War or interests of the individual. The individual person, group/party...instead of emphasizing, all. The country. The society...the furthering of a people through balance and moderate thinking, logical, rational argument, and not manipulation and fear mongering so common now...instead we have a violent society thinking violently, irrationally, impulsively, and now allowing people the time to actually make a change. No instead Warlocks and Warlords fight each other everyday with their votes, and budgets and media wands. Warlords yields the power obviously because magic doesn't exist. That was the greatest weapon ever created by politics and our structure of governing, its the illusion of power with the allusion of/for power. And while this little inner war has been going on for decades, the rest of our standards have fallen. Education, Health care, Judicial, Manufacturing, Information sector, Technology (unless is a social networking tool), Construction...etc. All losing ground, all losing traction...all losing momentum in the U.S. The U.S. doesn't need a face lift, thats what a revamp would be, a restructure. The U.S. needs a new body, a brain transplant, and its smile back.

Dolfans,

This is going to be a big week for The New World Order in the "Symphony Of Destruction"

have a HAARPy day :(

you forgot about Marshall and also Henne , but then you did say players with potential , this probably leaves Henne out. I hate to bash on him but he really sucked at the end of the year and appeared to get worse with each game.

Mando,

Your really going out on a limb with Marlon Moore. His job is in jeopardy with addition of Edmond Gates. If Moore doesn't get cut, then who will, Roberto Wallace? Nah, Wallace is too good in terms of special team, not to mention his upside. I could see the Dolphins try to trade Hartline for a pick but that's the only move I think will save Moore.

That fact you left Henne off your list shows how much confidence you have in his ability to develop further. It also shows what kind of season you think we'll have, being that the Henne's development is the most important to the Dolphins in regards to which player has the a "break-out" year. I'll reserve my judgement about Henne until after this season.

No NFL football this season,,,sorry!!

This FO is so stupid.

I wish they were as smart as Scott and Armando.

Everybody knows if QB's don't shine in their second season, they NEVER do.

Armando should be the GM and Scott the HC.

How's your fist pump Bucky?

I won't reserve my judgement.

Like evaluating anything, QB's or Black Jack decks, judgements SHOULD be a work in progress, updated often.

Henne came off the bench as a FIRST time starter. Looked very encouraging. When everything else was working fairly well, he won more games than he lost.

In his second season as a starter I saw a guy with poise, composure and character beyond his years. How many times did you see this two year wonder look totally rattled?

All the finger pointing and all the excuses aside, realistically speaking and in all honesty, Henne didn't look any worse than the rest of the people around him. From Henning all the way down to Berger.

So here's my CURRENT judgement:

Henne will never be a Marino type that can pick up the team and carry it every time need be. But then again, how many guys are?

In the right system, with a solid supporting cast, Henne will be good enough to get you to the post season every year!

Any more than that, I'll "reserve", for now.

AMEN! Rashad Jones WILL have as big as an impact as cammeron wake had last season. he WILL be the dolphins biggest breakout player this upcoming season! believe it or not the dolphins are primed to have a better season then alot of people are expecting. substantial upgrades at key positions help the cause... and who's to say Thomas won't burst onto the seen like a payton hilis, or our new speedy reciever getting open DEEP and then actually catching the ball(the anti-ginn) heck, players such as odrick, moore and edds are basically new players as well! it looks pretty good from here and freeagency didn't even start. now we need to go out and get one more STUD RECIEVER!!!

Can you imagine if Henning and SpOrano had Nat Moore on the roster with Clayton and Duper?

They would have traded Clayton for a big slow Tailback that really knew how to pick up the blitz!

Doh!

Can't believe there are still whiners on here blaming the coaches for Henne. Coaches can't make plays, only players can. Good players make the coaches look good, not the other way around. Henne is not a leader, will never ever carry the team on his shoulders. Last half of the 2010 season showed it wasn't the coaches, it was him. He stinks.

Speaking of lolipops. That wierd Uncle you grew up was lying to you. Those aren't lolipops so keep em outcha mouf!

I had to comment on this because you post was so ingnorant it doesn't even deserve a reply.

Not EVEN a nice try!

Fist Pump!

Mr odinpene, no surprise it was you the big Henne lover that quickly thinks of something else after seeing the word lolipop.

And you did reply, albeit at the level of adolescant street slime.

Mr odinpene, no surprise it was you the big Henne lover that quickly thinks of something else after seeing the word lolipop.

-Actually it was the wimpy limp wristed manner in which you type, COMBINED with the word lollipop. But yeah, I can spot a flamer from a mile away!

And you did reply, albeit at the level of adolescant street slime.

-Yeah you got me again, but I was just trying to bring it down to your level. I wanted to make sure you understood what I was saying.

Posted by: po henne baby didn't get his lollipop | May 22, 2011 at 02:27

Now go suck a lollipop!!!!

Yeah but Henne being only "good enough" to get you to the post season every year only does one thing...gets us a crappy somewhere in the 20's drat pick...and no SB ring

cowkilla,

Come on now. You and your negativity put the qualifier " only 'good enough" in there.

Besides, once you make the playoffs ANYTHING can happen and you know it.

Are you seriously going to sit there and cry because your QB only gets you to the playoffs every year.

Come on now, if Henne looks just like the guy that bangs your wife on "girls nights out", just say so.......................

odin, keep fighting that corner, i agree henne is gonna improve a lot next season

downer finfans prepare for a weird emotion- happiness, as the fins shock you with their wins next season, quickly trounced by your inevitable negativity no matter how well we do coz it isn't a perfect season or henne isn't marinoesk in his play,

i can smell food coming in september

Oh well...............

Guess I'll order up some pay per view wrestling.

I'm not really a fan, but I like to watch my fiances. Them twins are awesome!

Wow, this blog is slowly but surely dying. No offesne, but it seems to be the same few people who really have little or nothing new or interesting to say combined with VERY infrequent new material from Salguero.

Sorry, but that equals boring in my book.

Jake what do u expect it's a slow time normally but this lockout makes the news even more sparse... We could make some sh** up but what's the point.... There is nothing to report... Although I will say mondo is slacking!!!

WHAT IS YOURE FAVORITE KIND OF HAM? I HAVE HAD THE SPIRAL CUT HAM IT COMES ALL READY CUT IN SLICED AND IT IS COOK THROUGH SO YOU JUST EAT IT AND IT IS VERY GOOD. THEY HAVE IT IN THE SPECALTY MARKETS.
