Dolphins among the Top 10? Not quite yet

ESPN is fond of lists. Very fond.

This offseason the monolith sports giant has published Top 10 lists for 10 NFL-related positions and jobs. The rankings ostensibly measure the best of the best at their jobs in everything from the running backs, to quarterbacks, to coaches to ownership.

The ownership ranking published Tuesday gives bigtime props to New England owner Robert Kraft, whose group is ranked second among the Top 10. New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is ranked No. 10. In all, five AFC ownership groups are listed in the Top 10.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and his celebrity minions partners are not among the Top 10.

I'm not surprised. Last season was not Ross's finest -- especially at the moment he hung his coach Tony Sparano out to dry publicly by looking for a Michigan alumnus replacement without telling Sparano and then being suprised it was somehow news.

So there's that. There's also Tuesday's news that Ross cut salaries to all club employees across the board. ESPN didn't consider this in rating owners as seveal who imposed auterity measures well before Ross and the Dolphins are on the list, including Johnson.

All is not otherwise lost, however. Ross is learning. I think.

His last couple of months have been better than the first month he had in 2011. Unlike in 2010, he didn't place extra pressure on his coach and quarterback by proclaiming the Dolphins a Super Bowl contender or saying his quarterback could eventually be better than Dan Marino.

That is progress in learning the sport and its culture.

(Note to Ross: It is perfectly acceptable to predict a Super Bowl, and indeed encouraged by me, if your team is legitimately that well stocked. It is also absolutely fine to fire up the fan base by suggesting your quarterback might become Marino-caliber after that QB has a season in which he throws for 30 TDs and 4,000 yards. Just sayin'.)

In regard to the most important aspect of ownership, I believe Ross already gets it. He opens the wallet and gives Jeff Ireland or Bill Parcells or whomever is hunting for free agents, the necessary resources to land those free agents. Last year, he did exactly that with Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall. He gets a 10 out of 10 from me on that.

So maybe Ross isn't in the Top 10. Maybe he's not even in the Top 20 yet based on the still not-forgotten indiscretion of earlier this offseason. But it's not a hopeless situation.

And that brings me back to the ESPN power rankings list.

If you notice, the lists breaks down the Top 10 coaches, quarterbacks, cornerbacks, linebackers, safeties, tight ends, wide receivers, pass rushers, and running backs.

Not suprisingly, the Dolphins are not very well represented on these lists, with only two members of the organization making any of the lists.

Marshall made the Top 10 list for wide receivers. He came in at No. 10 so it's not like he dominated the list, but at least it suggests the Dolphins have a viable option for the quarterback to count on regardless of his issues off the field.

Sometimes being so close to the team, one lsees all the warts and forgets the beauty of a player. It's easy to lose sight of the opinion of those around the league of the team. That Marshall is on the list reminds me, at least, of his still-valuable and valued gifts. He is a cornerstone player if he can get his personal life right.

The QB list? The RB list? The CB, S, and TE list? No Dolphins are found there.

Cameron Wake matches Marshall in barely making the pass rusher list at No. 10. That's not a putdown. Being the No. 10 pass rusher in the NFL is an honor. DeMarcus Ware is listed as the NFL's top pass rusher on that list, with Green Bay's Clay Matthews, Indy's Dwight Freeney, Minnesota's Jared Allen and K.C.'s Tamba Hali rounding out the top 5.

I wouldn't complain about Wake being No. 10. All the other players on the list have had at least two seasons as double-digit sack artists. Wake was very good in 2010 but the idea is to have some consistency to make a rise on the list.

So what do these power rankings mean when considered in unison?

Well, when the so-called experts don't have your teams quarterback in the Top 10, you have issues in a quarterback league. When your running backs are not among the league's Top 10, and the head coach has proclaimed you a running team, you have issues. When neither the coach nor the owner who considered replacing him are among the Top 10 as decided by peers, pundits, and other so-called experts, you have work to do with your franchise starting from the top down.

Is that true? Is that fair?

Probably.

Oh Lord.....

Aloco has managed to take all the fun out of this.....talk about a KILLJOY......

anyway...more on Hen Hen's (mr. Chad Henne) tourtured childhood at a later date.....

We need to find the crucial event that led to his inability to throw a touch pass......

Once he confronts that...then the sky is the limit for Henne.....

KRIS REMINDS ME OF THE WITCHES OF SALEM,MA .

Aloco reminds me of the "R" word.....

and i'm not talking Repeat.......

night all......

We need to find the crucial event that led to his inability to throw a touch pass......

Posted by: kris | May 11, 2011 at 06:19 PM

That "crucial event" dates all the way back to the first pass he ever threw. His "receiver" just wasn't up for the game.

In the back seat of his Mom and Dads car, he finally worked up enough nerve to slip his hand up under little Susy's Cheerleader Uniform.

Eveything was going perfect until his fingers became entangled in Susy's "underwires"!

UNDERWIRES????

Poor Chad didn't even know what an underwire was! As panic set in, Chad began sweating profusely and fumbling blindly around in Little Suzy's shirt.

Suzy, realizing that enough was enough and flush with embarrassment, did what any good little cheerleader girl would do in this situation. She socked the big lumox upside the head so hard he had a black eye for a month!

So the next time you want to critize Chad's touch, have some sympathy and remember what a trumatic time he had attempting to throw that first pass..........

Can we have the name of Dan Henning stricken from the book of Dolphins.
If you need to refer to him, please refer to him as that waste of protoplasm from 2008 to 2010.

It just shows how far the Dolphins have fallen since Joe Robby. Mondo, I get what your saying....glass is half full.

But from 1973 to 1988 we were one of the top 5 franchises in the NFL....From that point, we have been spinning out of control. Our team is still struggling greatly, our management is very questionable and our ownership, well they are not in the top 10 thats darn sure.....

Speaking of lists....Did you see where Miami ranked in the AFC EAST in the last 10 years in drafting.....DEAD LAST, with a grade of F. Just behind the Bills....

Go Fins....

One day I am sure we will restore our past greatness.

Agreed Jim. It's bad

For you Dolphins fans along the mighty Mississippi, may GOD help you in your time of need.

Some thoughts...

Joe Robbie is perceived as a GOOD OWNER because he stayed out of the way and let Shula coach.

Stephan Ross is Perceived as a meddling Owner
because SO FAR HE HAS.
(He also, for some crazy reason, wants to be a DJ...)

Question:
Is Mike McCarthy (Packers) really THAT much better of a COACH than Tony Sparano????

I'm not so sure that he's much different.
(His team might just have gotten hot in the post season.)
If you ask me...they're similar guys.
.
.

Cooz, I've been saying that for years. McCarthy is a guy who benefitted from outstanding drafting.

PEOPLE WHO MAKE FUN OF HENNE SHOULD LOOK AT THEIR OWN LIFE FIRST ......... NO ONE OF US IS NEAR PERFECT .......HENNE HAS MADE A LOT OUT OF HIS LIFE AND STILL 25 YEARS OLD............

McCarthy is a WAY BETTER coach that Sparano. Don't know how that isn't obvious. He talks simple and straighforward, but read that guys history sometime. Really worked his way up and earned everything he got. Sparano never would have made it to HC had Parcells not tagged him. You won't see Sparano get another HC job after this one either.

Kolb lovers need to keep Feely in mind.
We got fleeced by Philadelphia once.
Let's not let that happen again.

darrilo....so you've listened to enough of McCarthy speeches that you feel he is smarter and more talented.
Ok...that's fair...(maybe you've heard McCarthy talk more than I have.) But they both seem like Blue Collar types of guys. To me the bigger difference is that the Packers have a superior organization.
.
.

That's right ALoco....

The people who hate Henne are just miserable folks who secretly can't stand their own lives...

That's it!

Enjoy Tuna Tar Tar
with Black Mushrooms!

.

Cooz,

They may seem similar as blue collar type guys and they may be.

But the difference in offensive philosophy is completely different. Night and day.

McCarthy believes is passing to set up the run, scheming his offense to be aggressive and unpredictable.

Mr Fg does none of that.

Not comparable. Apples and oranges.

No high draft picks for any of these FA QB's.

Bring on V Young.

Packers have ugly cheerleaders.

Cooz, I read a bio on him not that long ago. Was very impressed. Worked some pretty lame side jobs and did whatever he could to stay in football. Really worked his way up the good old fashioned way. Blue collar for sure. No doubt the Packers have been a superior organization. That counts. Makes a difference yes. Don't underestimate McCarthy though, he really is a smart guy, well grounded confident thinker. I get the feeling that some others do here that Sparano is just in over his head as HC, maybe he is a good line coach.

Brandon Marshalls top ten rating is on reputation, certainly not performance. I'll give a 10 for picking up Dansby, but until Marshall actually does something for the Phins he is a BUST!!!

>Miami is #1 in b**ching fans and media that compain like little girls on every issue and knock the team at every turn.

Never been on a Philly board, eh?

Hey you know what were going to rock Atlant or Chicago and then the HEAT is going to the NBA Finals !!! Mark it !!! Were all those Boston fans at that have been comin on our blogg, big shout out to ya !!!!

That list is presently fair and true...hope to see more fin representation next year.

Philly boards are for people satisfied with never winning a Super Bowl.

"There's also Tuesday's news that Ross cut salaries to all club employees across the board."

Doesn't that encapsulate the whole issue right there? Zero class.

For a guy who said he wouldn't do this two months ago I find this backtracking despicable. These people are barely earning enough to get by while Ross has a net worth of something in the range of 4 BILLION dollars (pinkie finger to mouth). So he cuts their salaries by 20%! What does this move really save him - maybe a max of $1 million - but that's probably a GROSS overstatement. Meantime, entire families will suffer all because billionaires and millionaires cannot get their act together. The single biggest thing Ross has accomplished since taking ownership of this team?... It has become an embarrassment to be a Dolphan (and I thought 1-7 at home was as bad as it could get).

For a guy who calls himself the Dolphins "biggest fan" he sure is managing to destroy what remains of a once proud franchise. This team has been on a slow slide since Joe Robbie died and it is accelerating exponentially.

Ross is a liar and a buffoon who has no business owning the Dolphins.

On another note... in reading PFT it is becoming more and more evident that the owners are preparing to cancel the 2011 season (especially if the lockout is lifted). Since Atty Butterball (the idiot who cancelled the NHL season just as NHL was poised to explode in its popularity) is in the NFL lawyer "brain" trust... well, you get the picture. By the way... the NHL never recovered its new found popularity. One man did that. And now the NFL owners are listening to him.

Aloco - Sorry, man. I am in a G-O-Defeat mood.

Bedtime for Bonzo. G'night all.

Say no to VY and his entourage of psychotherapists.

The Dolphins will go QB with 2012's draft.
We'll get one in the first round.
May even pluck another later in the draft.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..................................... MIAMI HEAT!...........................................................

fist pump

DyingBreed, you can say that again!

Okay, I'll say it for you:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
MIAMI HEAT!

Armando,

Have you talked to ANY of the players in the past month?

I mean BESIDES Frank "The Nut Jobber" Kearse?

I know it's the off season and there is a labor strike. But come on Armando, not a peep on the player organized workouts?

Follow me on twitter, blah, blah-BLAH! Tune in to my radio show where I give listeners migraines with my He Male Fran Drescher voice, blah, blah-BLAH!

Camp out in front of Henne's house! Stalk Carlos Dansby! Find out where these workouts ae taking place and GO THERE-Duh!

C'MON MAN! Do SOMETHING!!!!

GREAT HEAT win tonight! Congrats to all fans! Football wise, I agree with Odin!

For those of you that imbibe, Costco puts out a Kirkland brand of whiskey that's 103 Proof, $19.99, for a liter, excellent!

Ross has made himself and this organization look like idiots.

Hopefully he's learning on the job. It's pretty obvious he isn't the most football savy person out there. But he'll learn quickly enough.

I'll tell you this though, Michigan alumni are loyal people. Being from Michigan there's just no way football can simply be a business proposition.

The ONLY thing Michigan Alumni take more seriously than football is WINNING football!

He will never equal Joe Robbie, But I gaurantee you he'll end up putting Wayne to Shame!

As soon as Parcells fat a s s was out of the way and we went 7-9 AGAIN, Ross was ready to drop the axe on SpOrano! He'll reel in Ireland too and keep him on a short leash.

Ireland and SpOranos backs are against the wall just as much as Chad Henne's.

Ross will DEMAND excellence or ELSE!

Armando,

If the owners decide to bring in the "SCABS", how can I get a tryout?

I want to play Free Safety and Slot Receiver.

I'm not as good as Reshad Jones or Chris Clemons. But I'll be way cheaper and a lot better than Girbil Wilson!

I'll need a jersey with Double Zeros on the front and Head Hunter across the back!

ValHalla!!!!

Odin! I need to buy you a drink!

Speaking of SCABS..............

Armando how are you at snapping the ball through a hole in a piece of plywood?

Sports Science - ROTFLMAO!!!!

ValHalla Berserkers!!!!

Redsky,

That 103 proof Kirkland sounds pretty good right about now!

This CBA bullshyt is really starting to get to me.

Ummm yeah..I've been reading a bunch of stories about other teams players that are working out and practicing.. Where's the news on our guys? Come on Mando...get deep under cover and het us some meat!

The last thing that I would do if I was a part of a multi-billion dollar organization is go on strike... It can't be that hard to divide up 9 Bill...
A fifth grader could work out a solution to this issue. I haven't read much because it's boring and pointless...

Game #1 NE at Mia

Wilfork vs Pouncey
Henne vs Daboll playbook
Sparano vs the clock
Sparano vs going for fg on 4th and a half inch
Sparano vs Reporters in the losers locker room

Pouncey will be exposed

Henne will be confounded by a a new offensive scheme designed for players he doesn't have.

Sparano will become a serious candidate for SNL after the post game interview.

0-1

...get deep under cover and get us some meat!

Posted by: cowkilla | May 12, 2011 at 12:29 AM

That reminds me!

I miss my girlfriend...........and her sister..........and her Mom............

I wish it was the weekend(SIGH!).

Mando...what's going down in Miami-ville ?
Were waiting for something...

Odin... Are you saying that you run the three way train with them...or is it under the covers with your girlfriend, good conversation with her sister, and a great meal cooked by her mother? Just trying to figure out how my little sentence stirred up those thoughts of yours. No disrespect meant either, just curios and trying for some comedy relief...

Killa,

This strike is absolute HorseShyt.

The two sides aren't even communicating. Talks are scheduled to resume on the 16th!

The 16th!!!!

I dunno about anyone else, but if my million dollar salary was at stake, I'd at least be TRYING to work something out.

Freaking spoiled Be-atches!

The players are enjoying their vacation, most probably want the whole year off.

Lance...thats a pretty good assessment of game one...I thought the same thing on draft day when Ireland and Co. jumped into the second round and didn't pick a big name playmaker...our new RB would have been around in round three...did we really jump uo that high for this? Man I hate our FO and ownership these days...I bleed dolphin colors and these last 10 years are depressing... I want my winning team back!

Odin and Lance.. I believe you are both correct. I bet the players have been told by "someone" to keep it down and not act like they are enjoying all this time off and stuff. You know..the old saying...play hard but stay invisible to the public...this CBA crapp is GArY with the silent "r"

Killa,

Who do you think you're talking too?

I've re-read your post 6 times and I still can't figure out how it might be misconstrued as disrespectful.

I've ALWAYS had a "sister kink". It's Genetically encoded or some damn thing. To be honest though, I've only pulled off a "Trifecta" once. Unfortunately not all at the same time. I did the two smoking hot sisters in their basement bedroom. Moms caught me trying to sneak out the back door. She punished this Bad Boy-LOL!

This Girlfriend I have right now is pretty open minded about one mutual friend we have. She gets jealous easy though and let me know Moms and Little Sister are strictly off limits ;(

I keep working on her though and I'm breaking her down, slowly but surely!

In my spiritual beliefs it's NOT GOOD to repress Hunman Nature!

1ST:

I LIKE ROSS.

COMPETION ALL THE WAY AROUND.COACHES INCLUDED. IF YOUR WILLING TO BRING IN A QUARTERBACK TO COMPETE THAN WHY NOT A COACH. HE WANTS TO WIN AS MUCH AS WE DO. I CAN't BE MAD AT THAT.

2ND:

MANY TEAMS CAME FROM NOWHERE TO WIN THE BIG GAME WHY NOT US? ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.
CHAD WAS NOT A TOP TEN LAST YEAR,BUT LAST YEAR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANOTHER YEAR UNDER HIS BELT. HE MAY BE THE QB VERSION OF TEXANS RB FORSTER. I BET NOBODY UP HERE WOULD HAVE PICKED HIM AS TOP RUNNINGBACK.

(ARMANDO YOU INCLUDED)

OUR COACHES STINK I WILL TELL SPARANO TO HIS FACE UNLIKE MOST.

ARMANDO YOU INCLUDED

ARMANDO IM SORRY:

I KNOW FOR YOU TO DO YOUR JOB CORRECT YOU MUST BE WITH THE TEAM.

SO IF YOU MUST BROWN NOSE TO KEEP US INFORMED I'M NOT MAD AT YOU.

YOU ARE GREAT AT IT.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

put charlie sheen at assistant head coach because he likes winning...LOL.

i never saw anyone write with a lisp before.

Football is a game of opportunity. Things just have not fallen right for Miami in quite some time. Some of this can be blamed on poor decisions by management. (Brees v Culpepper, Long v Ryan) Some just bad timing. Top 5 pick in a very poor draft (Ronnie Brown).

There could be reason for optimism, but you need to look deep to find it. Maybe it is far-fetched to think Henne can improve to the point where he can actually become a true talent. If the offensive line is finally stabalized, maybe he can. Maybe Thomas can become a back others fear to tackle. Maybe Gates can somehow become that deep threat this team has been missing since Mark Duper hung up his cleats.

You just get the feeling that whatever this team does it somehow manages to be the wrong move. Until that changes it will be more of the same. It's sad to see what this once proud franchise has become.

what about some thoughts on bringing in either kirkpatrick or bartholomew and try them out at center? you have to wonder why bartholomew wasn't drafted. he is extremely strong and he's fast for a guy his size. so, what's up with him? however, if he could plug in at center that would leave them with the flexibility to put pouncey in as a pulling left guard. just a thought.

Lets see what the Herald does with some of their employees when the NFL closes down for a year or two. Some finanical austerity by the Miami Herald ???
The media believes that a very rich person must pay employees weither or not that rich person is getting a return on his investment. In other words, entittlement. All workers are entittled to what ever they want. Sounds like the NFLPA.

football, as a business, and as a sport, if you really think about it, is stupid. if you really thing about it.

How about a list of the Top 10 mustachioed coaches of all time?

1. Dave Wannstedt (Epic 'stache -- too bad about his being retarded, though)

4. Tony Sparano ('stache serves as a counterweight each time he fist pumps)

the organization has lost its way. the owner and FO are in over their heads and the head coach is clueless. hopefully we get our dolphins back after another losing season. i'm sure the players feel the same way as we do. they want a coach who can speak clearly and one that plays to WIN. the team quit the past two years which is a reflection on our coach. he's got to grow a "set" for players to "buy in".
