LaCanfora: Orton won't be available either

Another potential offseason veteran quarterback might be off the market. More good news for Chad Henne.

Terrible news for anyone hoping for a legitimate competition at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins.

Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, reports today that "people I've talked to" in Denver are telling him they can see a scenario where Orton is the Broncos' starting QB in 2011 -- ahem, whenever the season actually gets underway.

"Orton is valued by the Broncos," LaCanfora writes. "They know he can be a winning quarterback. He's smart and can absorb a system, and has some natural chemistry with receivers there like Brandon Lloyd. For a franchise that is dealing with significant fan unrest, and coming off a collapse of a season, and with a new regime in place, the Broncos need to win some games. Now.

"Without question, Orton gives them the best chance to do that"

So how does that affect Miami. Simple: The Dolphins are going to be in the hunt for a quarterback that can challenge Henne for the starting job. The job requires experience, an ability to have instant success against good opponents, and an obvious need to be available in the offseason.

With Orton, you could check off the list of requisites one after another until, well, now when we reach the avialability issue. Obviously, anything can change and it often does. So the thinking in Denver can go a different direction.

But if LaCanfora's people are correct, you can cross Orton off Miami's list of potential QB challengers.

Let's see ...

That leaves ...

Marc Bulger, Vince Young, Kevin Kolb, maybe Matt Hasselbeck, maybe Donovan McNabb.

Yikes.

[NOTE: Jason LaCanfora will join my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, at 8:10 on Thursday morning for his weekly segment. We'll talk about this Orton situation and other NFL issues. Listen in.]

Derek...You and I seem to be on the same page reguarding Henne, and the reasons to aquire a veteran to add to the mix..You mentioned Kurt Warner last night, and it made me think. Who is a guy that is in some way similar to Warner. Not statistically, but at the same sort of crossroad in his career. A guy that is deemed as finished, but has a lot to offer as both a good player, but a leader.....

Chad Pennington is all of those things. Te problem is obviously his durability. I wonder if he wasn't injured if he would have kept the starting job for the rest of last season. I think Penny is, and should be out of the equation. As a veteran that can come in, and compete. Be a capable backup if needed, even a starter should Henne show no improvement. I think the perfect guy is Hasselbeck.

I know he is getting older, has battled injury. But as a true proffesional, you cannot argue his merit, an value to an offense. He is by no means the savior. Just an option that may come at a low cost, with no risk of hemmoraging draft picks, or players to aquire. The guy knows how to play the position, and if nothing else is a stable, proven player. He could be the perfect fit as a number 2 guy.

Miami is a perfect city for a veteran quarterback in the twilight of his career. The weather is nice, the city is chill, and the expectaions for him to be a franchise guy is gone. I guess the question is. At this point in Hasselbecks career. Would he be willing to be a backup if he did not earn the starting job?

Darryl...

Picking at #15 in this past draft, do you feel that Miami ever had a realistic chance to draft a QB who was MORE capable then Henne is? I don't. I am not even sold on the first guy taken in the draft because I think he is dumb as rock and feel J-Ville got a project with Gabbert. Perhaps Minnesota saw something in Ponder, but since all of these picks were ahead of Miami... they are inconsequential.

I feel given Miami's needs, and the exemplary way the front office/Coach addressed them. Such as picking a Fine center/guard to bolster a sagging interior o-line, a RB that I feel was the perfect fit, a Sub 4'4 WR to stretch the field and a very crafty pick with Clay coming in as a H-back/TE... Henne will be as competent as any of the FA not named Palmer or Orton and Henne will not cost a 1st or 2nd that will be used on a QB with a better chance next year then Mallet and his shitty attitude would have given this year.

I just don't see where any of the Draft picks that were available to Miami were going to give Henne any sort of competition whatsoever. You said it best yourself in a post last night when you posted..

“I don’t see where any of these guys are going to be able to do anything Henne cannot”…

Derek4, Darryl

Can't believe guys are STILL going on about NOT drafting a QB. Seriously guys...give it up!!...it's old and boring (probably like a lot of you).

Let's replay things...Newton, Locker, Gabbert and Ponder all taken before we picked at 15. Without a second round pick it would have been complete suicide to REACH for one of these guys. So now we're left with the option of taking Kaepernick, Dalton or Mallett at 15. Any of them would have been a reach. Guys sqwack and complain when Pouncey goes at 15, when he was expected to go 18-24 but somehow it's OK to take a second round QB at 15. Doesn't really seem like sound logic!!

FA isn't over yet. If Alex Smith or Vince Young or Marc Bulger or even Matt Hasselbeck end up in Miami to compete with Henne this year all is not lost. The goal is to PUSH Henne, not to replace Henne. Sorry guys!!....most of you don't want that but too bad....deal with it!! The Dolphins aren't ready to give up on a 25 year old QB after only 27 starts. You can't deal with it then go crawl to support another team....it's reality boys!

BLOGGERS AREN'T HAPPY WITH HENNE WHO HAD 7-9 LAST 2 SEASONS AND WANT A GUY WHO HAD 4-12 RECORD .

HENNE HIMSELF SAID 2 DAYS A GO ,HE'S GOING TO COMPETE FOR HIS JOB AND HE'S N OT THE STARTER QB YET .......

I NOTICE THIS IS THE 3RD WEEK THAT MR ARMANDO THE GREAT COMES W/NEW POST ON WENSEDAY PRIOR TO MR LANCOFRA APPERANCE ON ARMANDO AND THE AMIGO SHOW ........ LOOKS LIKE A PLUG MORE THAN REAL INFO .

DD,

I'm agreeing with you on Hasselbeck. No one is looking for him to be the long term answer but I think he could help Henne and also push him. But I'm also wondering if you could put Bulger into that same category. A lot of people are down on him and think he's a 'system' QB. However, he's a year off from the rigours of the NFL and his body and mind should be well rested. He might love the idea of competing for a starting job in a warm climate. He's high on my list.

lets repeat ad nauseam all the same stuff day in and day out. and lets repeat what we read online as though it was ours 'bulgar should be healed now' yadayada yada yeah man all great points for the 19,000th time

we need a qb to challenge henne.

henne is more comfortable in dabolls system, he said so...even though he never played it yet.

with henning gone there is no hand cuffs on henne.

who was really better than henne at 15 anyway?

we need a vet like dangle dingleberry to challenge henne, light a fire under him

we can't give up a 2 for kolb, we tried that too many times and it failed.

give up a 3rd for palmer, he is a great 4-12 qb and also armando likes him

bulgar has had a full year to recover (as noted on espn, si, pft) so he could be a surprise.

lets bring in an aging crippled qb that can show henne the ropes.

we don't need an aging crippled qb that can show henne the ropes

breaking news, henne is going to add some 3 step drops to keep the d honest.

BRUINS WILL GO TO THE FINALS ...BOSTON GOT TO WIN ONE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR .

daboll, the worst oc in the league last year is going to turn things around. look what he did with peyton hillis.

breaking news...henne says he believes he still has to fight to be the starter. wow that is a great impressive attitude.

henne needs someone to push him. only how does that work? does the someone start and push henne on the bench? or does henne start knowing ooooooooh someone better than branderwaffle could take my job.

MASSA,

HOW MANY DRINKS DID YOU HAVE SO FAR ?

I FEEL BAD 0X80 GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE,I HOPE HE CAN WORK THINGS OUT W/HIS WIFE .

well that covers everything. lets all take turns repeating the above like its new insight.

with the first pick in the 2012 draft the miami dolphins select andrew luck qb stanford

MASSA IS RIGHT ,MR ARMANDO KEEPS WRITING THE SAME CRAP EVERY WEEK BEFORE MR LANCOFRA SHOWS UP AT HIS SHOW ,ARMANDO AND HIS MIDGET .

now that my homework is done i can drink and just sit back and watch everyone repeat me on the blog. black jack rocks here we gooooo

The idea that Orton was ever going to be available was ridiculous. Tebow hasn't shown he's ready to step up and be the surefire starter. Why would Elway and company get rid of their insurance policy not knowing if Tebow can do the job or not. I get the feeling that Elway isn't convinced of Tebow yet. Time will tell....

By the way, no way a veteran coach like John Fox was going to let Elway and company get rid of his veteran QB. He just got dumped from Carolina, I doubt he wants to be out in Denver in a year or two because of a QB who isn't ready to start in the league yet. Complete suicide...

You morons really hope we finish bad so we can draft Luck. WORST FANS IN THE LEAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Support your QB and TEAM no matter who is throwing the ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to play ping-pong with an Egyptian girl in Chattanooga, Tennessee and then have some almonds and pineapple slices.

With the new FO in DEN , are going to keep Orton because Fox feels comfortable with a vet. Palmer isn't going anywhere unless a team ponies up picks and or players. VY is a better fit for the Fin's system and might have a chip on his shoulder as he knows this is his last chance at greatness.

Henne has more potential than Orton.

I want a divorce !!!

I'm leaving you for the pool guy.

I don't know what the problem is bringing a guy like Vince Young in. He's got all the physical tools in the world. This could be his wake up call. Happened with Michael Vick. I'm not sure why it couldn't happen with Vince Young. You bring him in, have a competent player as third stringer and if Young acts up you ship his a** out of town.

Massa blog?

AMAZING AMANDO IS ALWAYS WANTS A NEW QB,MAYBE HES IN CAHORTS WITH CHEIF BREED,FIN FORE LIFE,ODIN, AND CUBEN.

We need Henne to start. It is the only sure fire way to get Sparano and his band of idiots out of here. Cowher returns to coaching in 2012. Go Chad!

Let's go Heat!!!

TRADEDOWN GANG SURE SOUNDS LIKE THE GANG OF DEFEET.

I for 1 am a terrible Dolphins fan and would like to either see Henne Blossom if not I would love for us to finish last and draft Luck. However I fear even when given the opportunity the Dolphins would still take a Defensive lineman instead.

Jesus what the hell are some of you on?

I guess its the same juice that made you think that Fiedler was the man back in the day and we could win it all with him because Baltimore did it with Dilfer.

ROFL....oh you turkeys are so funny. I cant wait to read the comments after he craps the bed again ala Fiedler and we go QB/Coach/GM searching.....AGAIN.

Bond9, I understand!

Despite VY's mental issues, I'd take Him in a heartbeat. Hell, Terry Bradshaw won 4 SBs, AND HE WAS BIPOLAR!

Whenever these losers decide to settle their differences you can be sure the blowfins will continue to play in a half empty stadium filled primarily with opposition fans on a nice fall holiday. Tony will continue his fist pumping and Chad will ensure everyone's holiday ends well.

I agree, it's gonna be another year of the same...Henne throwing INT's, misreads, overthrows, and just plain missing the WR... At least that will finally be the end of this horrible FO crew, and yet another QB and Coach search... At least we can get back to winning after we dump all of these losers

It's sad that it has to come down to this to get back on track and a playoff berth. Why doesnt Ross see this...and by not showing some sack and taking a shot on a QB this year for competition for Henne..now look at how many veteran QB's there are going to be to choose from...not a while lot..good job Ross....you've managed to mess up another season and it hasn't even started yet

GahbaldyGook

Meat Salad Sandwitch with a side of Penith Lamb Saaft sausages

Yak loin with grilled ocelot empanadas.

Is possible to trade for Kolb and give up a 2nd rounder and a player...just seems NFL just does not value players in trades bc of the Cap Restrictions...Cap numbers have to be almost equal...let Henne and Kolb fight to start, and hopefully this pushes one of them to the next level..unless we want to take a chance on a head case cry baby VY....FYI VY is used in our Fantasy League to describe someone who cries about how their team performed that week...

Test, test, test tickle!

Ostrich is good, so is hippopotamus and kangaroo! But buffalo is the best! Grilled medium rare! Ahhhh!

I still hope that mcnabb will get cut, cost us nothing in pics and be the best competition for henne (despite being wc off), the problem with young is that his character is suspect - he may shine in training and then lose interest and then games coz he just doesnt seem committed , as well as being a potential team cancer

personally i'm not worried about henne starting and am very confident of his progression this season (but not certain) regardless of that though we need a back-up for him, qb's get injured

i still think that most people are overly critical of sparano and ireland, to date they've made good draft pics and bad ones and a few that its too early to call, on balance way better than what had gone before

the team was 1-15 after a succession of awful drafts, they've had 1 p-o season, the last 2 seasons have been dissapointing but they have been competitive in a lot of games over 2 fairly tough schedules,

the fans need to get a bit more positive, we've probably got the best team and management we've had since shula

henne is key, but HE needs a back-up

mind u like canfora i would have picked kaep in the first round as stated on mock weekend, coz i think he's franchise one day

this is also a minority opinion!!

jlcanfora by the way doesn't give henne or the fins any hope of a recovery next season

Three letters... S.O.L looking foward to some "Luck" in next years draft. Pun intended. Lol

Go HENNE!!! Have some faith people!

Massa....funny stuff.....

WTH does PUSH Henne mean anyway?????

He's a pro right....just checking......
