Marc Bulger perhaps more attractive than you think

Marc Bulger.

I advise you to think Marc Bulger.

Why, you ask in an inquisitive voice, should I think of Marc Bulger on the Memorial Day weekend? Well, as I shared with you in a previous post, the NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora was reporting the Broncos are more likely than not to keep Kyle Orton when the season eventually gets underway. That seemingly eliminates one semi-attractive veteran quarterback option.

Yet another post this week had Bengals owner Mike Brown swearing Carson Palmer won't be traded, thus putting a dead end sign on that possible veteran QB avenue.

The possibilities are dwindling, folks.

So today when LaCanfora did his weekly segment on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, I had to ask, what legitimate most likely options that leaves the Dolphins? We both agreed not Kevin Kolb of Philadelphia. We both agreed not likely Donovan McNabb.

We both agreed Marc Bulger is a possibility.

Disclaimer: The last time I saw Bulger play was 2008 in St. Louis and he looked tentative, worn, and frankly, a little afraid to stand in the pocket. I thought he was done. LaCanfora acknowledged that Bulger was not good in his latter Rams days. But he told me something I didn't know about Bulger's most recent stint as a backup with Baltimore in 2010.

"I have some pretty good sources on the Ravens," he said. "When I talked to people there they were very impressed with Bulger. They told me when he's on the field and running the offense, the ball often doesn't hit the ground ... They believe he's going to be a very good quarterback in 2011. They would love to keep him in Baltimore as the backup but they think someone will sign him to compete to start or be a bridge quarterback and a pretty good one at that."

Bulger makes sense for Miami because he does have plenty of experience. He has had time to recover from the beating he suffered in 2008-2009. He won't require draft choice compensation. He won't be extremely expensive to sign. He is not exclusively a West Coast offense guy like McNabb and others. And the last time someone took a chance on a seemingly washed up former St. Louis QB, it paid off handsomely.

Kurt Warner went from New York Giants has-been to Super Bowl QB in Arizona.

I'm not saying Bulger will reap similar benefits for his next team. I'm not saying he will be the answer to Miami's QB problems for the next five years. The truth of the matter is the Dolphins are not likely to find that guy in free agency or via trade. Those guys don't just show up on your doorstep.

So if that is what you're hoping for, don't bank on it. I've told you, Peyton Manning isn't signing with Miami.

I'm just saying don't dismiss Bulger out of hand as a Miami possibility. He might not turn the franchise around. But he would serve as competition fo Chad Henne. At this point, that may be the only possbility the Dolphins might be left with.

Poizen you're an idiot.

Derek4,

Always enjoy your posts as well you seem to take the time to always think thru various scenario`s when posting. I like the idea of Bulger for various reasons he provides in my opinion some good competition for Henne and if Chad beats him out that`s all the better for our squad, on the other hand if he can`t then package and mortgage next years draft we must to try and enter the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

The other school of thought here is if Henne were to get injured I feel much better about Marc Bulger of the bench as opposed to Thigpen, like you posted the other day while fun to watch there is a reason he has only won a single game as a starter after almost a full season at the helm for K.C.

odin,

I just caught your post about your boy, God bless him and all the best to you and your family this weekend.

Well.....

I gave the "Challenge" for just under an Hour and a half...

And with the exception of those that understand and realize the situation, and have offered up the only true solutions... I have heard very little and seen the "Rats scatter" and the sailors keep sailing.

Please...

Don't let me any longer to interrupt those of you who live for team/player/coach/owner bashing, pissing & moaning and generally running your mouth about those things that have very limited (unless you wish to screw the teams draft next year) solutions for. Even if you do screw the team and spend a 1st or 2nd on some Andy Reid throw away project, chances are Henne beats them out in camp anyway.

At least "TRY" to think, people... Ripping the team or Armando is way to easy. It's for fools with no answers of their own... only mouths to run...

And I feel this “challenge” has shown that very clearly.

Thank you! to those of your who wrote you thoughts and idea's... it's a good thing to see on this blog once and awhile!

Talk to you gentlemen (and others) later….

Mark is right on the money> It's Henne or bust. I'm really hoping for the best under a new OC, but also am really not seeing a whole lot of wins in the upcoming schedule unless the offense is dramatically better. A good line will help, but running backs, TE, and receiver upgrades are needed whether or not Henne is the man or not. Tough opening schedule> NE, Hou, at CLE, at SD. Denver at home could be the first win of the season.

I've been saying this for a while. To me it's between Young, Alex Smith, Bulger and Hasselbeck, with my thimking being that both Smith and Hasselbeck will likely resign with their old teams.

Gusy don't write off Marc Bulger. He played behind a pretty porous OL in St. Louis his last couple of seasons there. On top of that he suffered more than one concussion. You want to throw up Td?INT numbers and blame Bulger for that but towards the end he play on some pretty bad Rams teams. He was sacked a LOT. I think the year being a backup and not getting beat up was good for him and he's not ancient. He is NOT the long term answer but for those who are sneering at him, keep in mind you probably said the same thing about Pennington before he came here in 2008. Let's give Henne some competition and have a competent second QB on the roster in case of injury and poor performance. We can evaluate where we are next offseason.

DC Fan You need to read Genesis 15:18-19 and know that it will happen.

Yea Eric, Im an idiot, I give my points and support them. I just don't make blind stupid comments without support like all of you brilliant folk...

Thanks

Interesting...

I checked out the QB stats the last couple of years Bulger was on the Rams and found that even though Bulger had lousy statistics, they were far better than the other QB's on the roster.

In 2008 as an example, Bulger had a 71.4 QB rating while Trent Green (another well known veteran QB) had a paltry 41.7 QB rating, throwing 0 TD's & 6 INT's.

This leads me to believe that the problem wasn't the QB position as much as it was everything else.

Poizen,

You're not an idiot....so don't worry what some people say. People on here have a different opinion than us and that somehow makes us an IDIOT....brilliant thinking!!

You're one of the few guys on here I enjoy reading what you have to say and your points are well make and rational. 'Don't let the turkeys get you down' bud....

Armadno ripped the idea of Bulger before but now is all up on him. Total 360 on his part

Let us trade two 2nds and a 3rd round pick for Mr. Bulger.

Yes.

landry jones next year. take bulger as a backup. henne starts and we draft landry jones to learn. go phins!

Let's go get Vince Young. He can be that franchise guy, I have faith!

Henne, Bulgar, Orton, Palmer doesn't matter a hoot. We finish 7-9 for the 3rd year in a row.

The Miami coaching staff will ensure the Dolphins have a shocking season and hopefully most will be sacked next year.
We give Henne ONE more year, keep Thigpen as back up and then if needs must get one of the top QB prospects next year.We don't need an expensive stop gap reject for this year.

I agree with Pickles and others that say give Henne this year to prove his worth. I don't think any QBs would have done well in Miami last year. The o-line was pathetic, except for Jake of course, the running game was non-existant, and we had no deep receiving threat. Add the fact that Henning is a fossil and held Henne back only adds to the mess. This year, Henne has all the tools(new OC, better o-line, better RBs, fast WR). I believe he's going to show that he's a very good QB. Maybe not Marino, Manning, Brees, Brady(puke), etc......but I really think he'll be a good QB. He'll be better than Mancheese in NY for sure. Of course, if he isn't, he's gone!

VINCE YOUNG OR BUST..........ATHLETICISM IS THE KEY WITH OUR YOUNG LINE NO WE WONT WIN THE SUPERBOWL WITH HIM BUT WE WILL COMPETE WITH EVERY TEAM WE FACE AND THATS WHAT I WANT

A health Bulger would be a steal. After taking a beating due to a terrible Ram's O'line, he has had a chance to heal as a back up over the last few years. If he has regained his form, he has all the tools to take the Dolphins to the big show.

Bulger would be the best cheaper option to go with & has veteran experience!!! Denver will want too much for Orton & so will Cincinnati for Carson!!!

no thanks, the reason bulger struggles is because he was use to running mike martz system. which is a spot pass. the reciever runs to a certain spot on the field . it all has to do with timing. unless brian daboll has been talking with mike martz......this is going to be a waste of time ,money and effort.

VINCE YOUNG! more attractive than you think. he's the only real chance the dolphins have at a winning season. bottom line!

Warner played super before going to NY and then AZ, Bulger has always sucked or been very, very average. I would rather try Hasselbeck.

Marc frickin' Bulger? Why not Miley Cyrus, while we wander down Extreme Fantasy Boulevard?

We are in trouble at the QB position, I do not think Henne will be any better, okay he could be better then his last 4 games because he really sucked, Like Shula said he should have come into his own by now if he was going to, He has had a few good games but only a few and his heart is in question and that dosen't have anything to do with the offensive cordinator. You either have IT or you Don't like MANDo says sometimes,I just on't see a dramatic turnaround for him just cause we got a new OC

So, you are not feeding us Fan's appetite for Football. OK. Because of that, reading about Odin's son above and being Memorial Day then we will prey on the news we have. We Americans are not Fools under any means. We KNOW that every War that the U.S. has been involved in(as any other developed Country in the World has had) responds more to Armamentists interests than to any real threat. At the same time, these interests are a major support to keep the World's economy going. But, the Dead hunt us and so the Wounded will and once a year, We will have our say.

No Bulger! If the Ravens are making him sound good, then they want to get rid of him. Again, we get leftovers.....

Odin....
Some things are more important.
God bless you and your son(s) for the service and dedication from the son of a Korean vet and a 12 year vet.

Derik4Dolphins came on this blog and basically called everyone idiots.....and many said "thank-you".....or nothing at all.....

Well.....now that this blog has Derik4Dolphins approval.....for the one and a half or however long he said he threw out the "CHALLENGE".....then..........I guess all is right with the world......

Thanks for the blessings derick......please send word thu virgin dove before you stop in again.....so we mere mortals can make ready the blog for your cyber-prescence......

Armando.......

I like the Bulger idea....if you live up here in the Baltimore area....you know that Bulger's rep is stellar.....and the reports (radio) were that his teamates had all the confidence he could step in and lead the team without missing a beat if Flacco went down.....Good thing for the Raven's they never had to find out.....

And as the old saying goes....the most popular man on the team (to the fans).....is the back-up QB....and after each loss rabid fans would curse Flacco and chant for Bulger.....also citing that during camp...Bulger was more crisp......

all I know is Flacco never got benched....and if the ball never touched the ground in practice or not......Coach Harbagugh never felt the need to use him.....

I think I would rather stick with Henne....rather than over pay...or over reach for Bulger.....

I like the fit, chad Pennington was quote unquote washed up and he breathed new life into the 'Fins after the most horrible of seasons. Bulger is another guy with West Virginia ties and let me point out these are some tough hombres. Besides, Marc won't be behind that '08 Rams line.

MANDO,JUST ADMET THAT YOUR IN CAHOOTS WITH THE GANG OF DEFEET, YOUR NEXT POST WILL BE WHO WIL BE MAIMIS NEXT HEAD CAOCH,OF COURSE YUOLL BE ADVOCATING BILL COWER THE CHINA MAN,PLEASE POST SOMETHING LIKE WHAT YOUL BE BBQing ON MEMOREL DAY.

Kris @9:39,

I think your missing the point about what Derek did, go back on the 1st page and red of all the posts and you`ll see alot of dumb name calling aimed at anybody with any positive feedback about the post, while it`s nothing new here alot of the comments are from people that are basically trolling, being a regular Kris you know that anybody coming on and getting cute, throwing down challenges ect... would get absolutly cyber roasted by the entire blog. It was basically a friendly wager to see who could come up with a plan that was better (at least it`s how I interpreted it) and suprise suprise we all agreed anything that didn`t require trading picks.

Kris

Excuse me I miss worded the hell out of a phrase there I meant go back to page one of this post and the last 2 pages of the previous and you`ll see why that happend.

FAKE ALOCO AT 11:24

Armando, what are you smoking ?? Bulger ? You got to be kidding me ! Bulger isn't Kurt Warner by any stretch of the imagination. Bulger is a has been, that never was. Henne is better than him. Jason LaConforda is so crossed eyed, that the tears roll down the back of his face when he cries ..... Bulger ? I have been pounding the Vince Young thing for a long time on here. He's Young ( no pun intended ) only 28 years old, he can scramble, he can make plays with his feet, He got a decent arm and we can get him cheap ( no draft picks ). Who cares if he gets along with Marshall or not ? Every team has guys with big mouths and baggage, were not the only team. I would without a doubt, sign Vince Young before Bulger any day of the week and twice on Sunday. If the Dolphins miss this, then thye deserve to lose 12 games !!!

OUR NEW HERO......NAThAN HORTON ,,,,,,,,,,,

THE OLD BRUINS DAYS ARE BACK ............THE DAYS OF CHAMPIONS AND HEROES .

AFTER ALL THIS TIME OF WAITING ,ARMANDO COMES UP WITH MR BULGR ,THE NAME OF THE BOSTON MAFIA BOSS WHITE BULGER .....

DC, what you said "Also, why believe what Baltimore says about a QB then KNOW want's to start, therefore will try to prop up to get the most for him? THINK MANDO!!!!"
Excellent point, though I wish it weren't at Mando's expense! LOL

I give Mando a pass here cause he DOES care about the Fins..about as close to a fan as you could ask for.

Yes, he's grasping at straw here, but then who among us isn't?
Still, as you say, the Ravens are going to "hard-sell" any prospective buyer of Bulger. We should probably do the same with Channing Crowder.

Poizen...ALL the QB's that struggled in Miami pretty much did the same everywhere else except perhaps Sage, and Daunte's BIG game...against us.

Lets face it...we haven't had a solid QB since BEFORE Dan retired...as he was not top notch his last 2 years under Johnson.
THAT'S when we should have been drafting for the future.
I'd be curious to know what QB we COULD HAVE HAD those last 2 years.

I'm thinking we passed the 1st time on Brees? Of course, we passed on him twice.

We're right up there with the Bungles and (formerly) the Lions for ineptness in the mgt area.

Bulger.

This team has gone from legendary to insane.

TH

You guys crying about your Q.B. makes me laugh,It's your O-line that needs fixing you bunch of dummies~~~~~~~~~~~~

As soon as DC Dolfan gets the Mid-East on the right path, he'll work on the Dolphin's problems with the help of his little sock puppet Kris!

Funny!!! I was under the impression that UFA were free to sign with any team in the league or has a new CBA been signed changing this ? Bulger is a FA people the Ravens are owed nothing by any team wishing his services the second the ink hits the document restoring labor peace.

Fin4life @11:19 PM.....

I respect your opinion and because of that I will reconsider my initial post about derik4......but to be completly honest...on first glance the post seemed very condensending to me...but i;ve to be wrong in the past and probably will be again in the future.....

Wether I liked the post or not it fostered a good discussuon from the main contributors of this post.....and....after all is the point of this blog.....

Derik...MY BAD....

Fin4life.....thanks for giving me another perspective.....

Have a great day ALL FIN FANS......

Bulger has been my choice on all polls. Quite simply because he wouldn't cost us any draft picks. Ultimately we will need to draft one of the best quarterbacks next season and I think we will be drafting fairly high. At one point, Bulger was thought to be good enough to unseat Warner in St. Louis, but his offensive line was atrocious and he was rattled. He is healthy and experienced and just good enough to provide Henne with some competion. In Baltimore, Flacco has a hold of the starting position, but in Miami Bulger has a legitimate shot at winning the starting job. When you include the Miami environment and no state tax, then Bulger can probably be had for a fair rate. Regardless of whether he is a quality starter, we need a decent second string guy. Bulger is certainly that.

Kris @7:37,

Your opinion is one of the ones I respect on the blog as well, funny story for you. Some old friends I hadn`t seen in a while are down for Memorial weekend and wanted to head down for the Keys to get in some fishing and after pleading with the wife I won my freedom to tag along. The funny part in this is I hate fishing and have basically been up all night drinking beer and on my laptop monitoring the blog and looking at sights about the CBA and NBA Finals, think the guys are wondering if I`ve gone a little nuts.

WHO WILL CHEF BREED SAY IS MIAMI NEXT BIG QB?

FIN,WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR BREKFEST THISMORNING?

IF YUOR DOWN IN THE KEYS BEWARE OF THE WOMEN IN BAREFEET,THERE NOT CLEAN.

Re: Dolphin Qback position for rent

Why are we even talking about Pennington ?
The guy is made of crystal! Get a servicable
young-ish veteran with a mid-life crisis
(football-life) and let's build a damn' football team that doesn't make us squirm to watch. And for the fan's sake - dump Henne and get someone with some scrambling ability and marksmanship.

Aloco,

No breakfast cause I haven`t slept all night and am still working on polishing of some beer with the fellas and now that you mention it people down here are a little dirty waking around in worn out flip flops with dirty feet and rags for cloths. I haven`t slept and still look better than some of these peolpe, no worries I came to party, like I said I hate fishing.

HAVE FUN FIN.

Aloco,

While I was surfing the web I came accross this segment from NFL Films about the top 100 players with Cam Wake as a guest and I`m going to post the link for you because to me Dukes and Sapp are basically making fun of him and have been picking on him for the days Cam has been there, I don`t like Cam`s pick either but he`s not a reporter and they could take it easy on him, no respect for the Miami guys, Sapp shoud stay with his girlfriend Daisy Duke in L.A.

Here is the link!
