'Pouncey will be a center, and a good one'

The criticisms I hear most often of the Dolphins first round choice of Mike Pouncey is two-fold:

The first criticism is Pouncey is a guard -- just a guard. The second one is that Pouncey, when given the chance to play center, was terrible with the shotgun snap.

Let me make something perfectly clear. The Dolphins picked Pouncey to be a center. If he turns out to be a guard, he will have failed in meeting the expectations the Dolphins had for him. And the Dolphins will have failed in their vision for Pouncey because guards at No. 15 better be Pro Bowl types rather than merely starters.

Let me make something else clear. After speaking to two scouts and a coaching source on the college level, I was convinced by them that Pouncey is a center and will be a good one. Moreover, I was told not to fret too much over the shotgun snap problem Pouncey had early in the 2010 season.

"It was his first season starting at center, they probably didn't work on it live in practice as much as they should have, and once they identified it as a problem, it took him just a couple of weeks to resolve it," the college source told me. "Pouncey will be a center, and a good one. Don't get caught up in the comparisons with his brother. He'll be good in his own right."

So next time you hear someone say the Dolphins wasted their first round pick or didn't get value because Pouncey is not a center, do not remain silent. He is a center until further notice. And if someone says the shotgun snaps in college is a concern, you know the facts. He struggled early but addressed the issue.

By the way, it was interesting to me that the ESPN Sports Science video below (I love this series) has Pouncey at center. And he's snapping shotgun. And he snaps correctly 30 of 30 times.

There's something else that caught my eye in the video. Pouncey was put under some duress. And he seemed to like it. "I definitely best under pressure," he said, "and I love being under pressure."

Cool!

So if Pouncey is center then I hope we can sign t/g, Tyson Clabo or g, Carl Nicks.

ALoco,

Its Oprah Winfrey not Orpah Winfry. Who does your spell check, Orca the whale? LOL.........

Dwight Stevenson was a God, A lot of you guys might be to young to remember but the guy would destroy his first assignment and search for another guy to flatten ,like Odin says.....

DB,

Let me apologize for this post in advance.

ALoco's always trying to take shots at you and missing. I have to school the "youngin"

ALOCO, pay attention.

Aloco: DB when your drunk you sound dumb like Tony SpOrano. (thats good, thats funny-OK)

DB: Aloco, I haven't had one sip in four years.

**Aloco, this is where you missed it. you had the perfect "set up" going and the perfect response from DB. At this point your response should have been as follows...........

Aloco: Oh, so you sound as dumb as Tony SpOrano when your sober?

Tah Dah(rimshot)!

The problem with the Dwight Stephenson era was that every olineman not named Stephenson Richmond Webb was an absolute piece of s*hit.

Menace/Breed

I agree with odin as well Stevenson was a man amongst boys, hated watching it all come to an end on Monday night vs. the Jets for sure, a Fins lowlight for the ages, and I`d bet when they carted him off Marino must have been the most depressed guy in the Stadium.

odinseye,

There's a HUGE difference. Sparano sounds as if though he used to be a punch drunk boxer.
)x80 had it right on the money. Sparano moves from one half thought to the next. LOL...........

Toast and Whiskey dinner?

I do have to school this guy.

Toast and Whiskey is for BREAKFAST.

Breakfast of Champions, if I do say so myself.

Ive gotten to the point where I neither listen to nor read Sparano pressers. LOL.........

Sad thing about Sparano is that a person usually speaks the exact same way that they think. Guess it means Sparano thinks everything "halfway" thru. LOL.......

F4L, Leave it to the Jets(Marty Lyons) To end the greatness of big Dwight, I think he only played for 7 or 8 years and was dominating those years... Any Disagreements that Dwight Stevenson was the Man..

Well now DB.......ah....lets not be too um......

Really if you look at this thing and then you can, make ah, ah, things change and um, you see..........

But the mosy important issues really are, just, you know the way things ....ah.....

That's the way the ball bounces......Duuuuuh!!!!

odin,

Sorry but disagree on the scooling of the Breakfast of Champs, instead of Whiskey I recomend a few hots os Cognac with that toast. It will get your blood pressure coocking in the morning for sure. The Whiskey slows the heart rate and is better served with your mashed potato or bowl of rice dinner of King`s.

Menace,

Had forgotten it was Marty Lyons on that play who chiped him low, in todays game with Big Dwight engaged with another player it would have been a 15 yarder and with todays micro surgeries big Dwight would have played again. It`s amazing how far along theyv`e come with those preceedures, thinking W.Mcgahee here.

For some reason I Agree with F4Ls post @ 2:18..............

Craig M,

"And to Sheppard, did you notice his brother went to the Pro Bowl last year as a rookie, after his team went to the Super Bowl? Must have been a coincidence, right?"

You might want to read the whole conversation before interjecting.

DC Dolphan named 3 successful teams and made note that they had Playmakers and an outstanding OLine. I offered that none of them had a first year Center operating with a makeshift oLine. Would you disagree?

The elder Pouncey Played some Center in 07' and fulltime Center in 08' and 09'. The younger Puncey does not have that experience because he only played one year at the position yet some have proclaimed him to be ELITE and of Probowl caliber.
He may be of the same bloodline as his brother but the younger Pouncey may be far from the same talent, is this something that you can argue against?
you have jumped into a conversation that you do not belong in and you offered no salient points to the conversation. Be gone with you. (waving my hand as though Royalty to a Peasant)

Fin4life,

I think you have it right. Pouncey next to long, hopefully for the next decade.

Incognito at C and a competition at LG. Jerry seems the most athletic potential guy at RG.

Hopefully he gets his foot work down. Footwork and technique make a lot of difference.

I wonder how many FA's or how much money Ireland has for FA.

I want to see V Young, plus I assumed a G.

Who else?

Guy's I still have a bad feeling about the coaching of the mighty air-breathers, I ,mean they got a OC that was statistically worse then a guy that's been brain dead sinse 1964(Henning), and then there's Tony (Fisty)Sporono, let's face it, this guy is more clueless then a fat kid in a candy factory............

I HAVE to be a Daboll fan for the same reason I HAVE to be a Henne fan.

Now that I think about it, I guess the same could be said for why I'm a SpOrano fan.

(Geez........this post ain't goinbg like I thought it would.)

Hmmmmm......Shula, Marino, Stevens...........

You know what? Just NEVER MIND!!!!

Menace,

You know something I gotta say that the most disappointing thing of this offseason has been the way Ross mismanaged the whole coaching search fiasco because it left me with a bad impression that it really will take total control of the team to swing anyone worth there weight down here now, unless ofcourse he breaks the bank and makes someone the 1st. 10 Mil a year guy.

I must admit that with the exception of JJ who built a dynasty in Dallas I haven`t been very comfortable with that arraingement. I feel a strong GM is alot more significant than we know and I base it on the succesful teams in the league today. The best FO was without a doubt the one Bob Kraft put together in N.E. look at the success those guys have gone on to have, Pioli is turning it around in K.C., while Demitroff has completely turned Atlanta around. In Pitt. Cowher had zero control every pick is made by Art Rooney Jr. who you never hear about but does a bang up job year in year out, how about Thompson in G.B. I could go on and on but you get the `point.

Heres the thing.

Incognito is a better C then Guard.

Pouncey is way better at pulling then Incognito is.

Soooooooooooo now we are going to have 2 people playing out of position of strength just so our clowns can try and prove a point.

Ireland showed well with the draft this year, IMO.

Very interested to see what he does with FA.

Hopefully Ireland can be a shrewd fixture in Miami for many years and build a dynasty.

F4L, I think it comes down to the owner of the team, Lets face it since Robbie left we had Wayne(Be Kind rewind) Huizanga and now they got Steven(Hollywood)Ross , With those two you can only hope for mediocrity at best, And thats what the fins have been in the last decade, 470%(7-9)(Two seasons in a row) at best and horrid at worse(1 and 15)(And more then likely 3 and 13 this season), jmho

ODIN ,

I JUST OT OFF MY NAP TO FIND OUT THAT I WAS FAKED SINCE MY LAST POST TO DB SOUNDING LIKE SPARANO ........

DB REALLY SOUND LIKE OUR COACH ...HE TALKS LIKE HIM IN CIRCULES .

Oregon @2:39,

I agree with your line of thinking as well for this team moving foward, I also like the upside VY could bring and believe he will have something to prove in order to command a big payday again. I would have liked to have taken another speed player like D.Locke when he was still there in rd.7 but won`t knock the pick of Kearse because I can remember 2 late rd. DT`s that have pand out for us in the past in Kip Vickerson and Norman Hand. To this day it`s 2 players we let go thru FA that could have helped, especially Hand who became a stud for S.D. and N.O. I would bring in VY and leave the spending spree there because you never know what all the in`s and out`s of this new CBA will mean to FA in the future.

Odin, What is your involment in the new "Blockbuster" Movie "THOR" ???, Are you involved with Home bringing out his movie "Have a Harrpy Day"?????Whats up???? HOLLA BACK....

I have no problem with what Ross has done.

Adding celebrities to ownership? Who cares. Does not effect football.

Ross was willing to go after a better HC, that's good.

He probably understands he can not keep changing GM's and trusted Ireland's estimation of Sparano.

I am most encouraged by Ross stating he wants to see an aggressive dynamic offense.

I do not understand how he imagines that is going to happen with Sparano.

Heres the thing.

Incognito is a better C then Guard.

Pouncey is way better at pulling then Incognito is.

**POST OF THE YEAR**

Watch how much time gets wasted while these guys try to figure it out.

The NFL will shut down if their stay of the lock-out is overturned. And theres nothing the playes can do about that. The NFl will put up a closed sign untill the players agree to a new settlement. The Brady case is very dangerous, and may cause the NFL to fold its doors and start over....think about it. These NFL billionares didnt get that money by being nice guys.

WileyDolphin | May 09, 2011 at 11:47 AM

Nice post WileyDolphin, it`s deff. the 800 pd. Gorilla in the room nobodies talking about can`t even remember the last time Mando posted something on the subject looking to ignore it with everyone else hoping it will just go away. NFL Net only gives little tidbits, ProFootball talk with Florio has something almost daily though and they`re reporting the very real possibility you mention in your post, best post all day, kudos !

Guys Lets face it, if it's the owners vs, the players think about that the owners are billionares, they can(And will) hold out for a long time....... sad but true..

Home Conspiracy, i like it, dude

"The only conspiracy gibberish is what Sheeple like u watch on USA government controlled privately run propaganda news

The conspiracy theory is what u r told and gobble up like a starved nympho prostitute eating paste

Now Get Your Shine Box!

The Miami Dolphins r putting together a good team"

please help us sheeple, Home Conspiracy, You have really gotten me to think outside the box.

Cuban,

Actually Home is pretty upset with me and I him.

Home paid me a handsome consultants fee upfront with the understanding I could walk at any time(sound familiar?).

We got into from day one. He couldn't even figure out the proper title for the film!

I mean, come on, who the hell is Thor without Odin? **HELLO**

We just can't work together so I took the money and RAN!

ValHalla!!!!

If we get to late June without a settlement (only 6-weeks or so from now) then I think the season itself begins to be jeapordized day by day.

We've already seen rookie camps wiped out. The first of those usually occurs right after a draft. Next, come the first mimi-camps which usually occur in May. There seems zero prospect of that happening.

Next would be training camp itself, the erasure of which would pretty much ensure chaos and VERY poorly conditioned players, both mentally and physically.

The ticking of the clock is getting louder, with the first effects on the 2012 season (if there is one) having already been felt.

This situation just doesn't look good.

BTW, I'am totally with the players here, they give there blood,Tendons, broken bones for a tightly knit group(32in all) that charges mega dollars from fans,Mega dollars fromthe networks,Mega doolas from endorsements and dosnt want to contribute to the core group, kinda reminds me of the "WALL STREET" scumb that pilfers away millions everyday from us..... It's time to Rise up against the fat cats that keep getting fat on our hard earned money.........

LOL At Odin, Thats why I fired him from the "DODSWORTH/MENACE IN 2012" Election, he's to confused...lol.,.

In India, clarified butter is known as "ghee" and makes a delightful and tasty addition to many dishes.

I also feed ghee to my army of Atomic Robot Squirrels that will someday rule the world.

Home against dope
Clay Mathews is not gonna like this. lol Cry

The New York Times is reporting that the NFL is considering having the World Anti-Doping Agency oversee testing of players for performance-enhancing drugs if a federal appeals court forces the league to end the lockout and implement rules for operating the league this season.
The Times cited an unidentified NFL official briefed on its planning.
The newspaper reports bringing in WADA could eventually lead to players being blood tested for human growth hormone for the first time.
The NFL and players are locked in a labor battle that has gone to the courts. The owners are currently locking out the players, who have dissolved their union and sued the owners in federal court.

Menace,

While I agree that the players give there life`s blood to the game of Football, it isn`t there personal wealth keeping it viable by any stretch and I am with ownership on the following points.

1) In what line of business have you seen employees demand to see ownerships books in order to properly gauge what they`re cut is, that demand was outragous to say the least.

2) The players say that as ownerships partners they are entitled to 50% of all anual gross !! what really !! I`m going to give half of my anual income to a bunch of spoiled and in many regards overpaid employees/entertainers.

3 It`s not just NFL owners and players waiting on the outcome here either the NBA will wait and see what transpires here in order to help shape there CBA next season !! There is the future structure of Pro Sports as we know it in the balance.

Please share stories of Clarified Butter experiences. It is so wonderful to hear them.

CLARIFIED BUTTER IS VERY IMP[ORTANT TO BRUSH OVER THE HAMBURGER ROLL BEFORE TOASTING .

F4L, Like any buissness, If there making money the employees should share the profits thus continueing the cycle of making money, Then again why should they give you money???, That is the 'American way".....................And that's the real problem IMHO..

Sheppard @2:27 is absolutely right about Craig M's post and just to add to that, Craig you also talk bout "IF he can be as good as people think he is going to help a lot" while later stating "Pouncey doing the job is going to be important to the team." That just screams that you have about as much confidence as the people complaining about him do. He has 1 year experience and we expect him to QB our O-line?

Dolphin @2:57 is absolutely right why are they going to put these guys in a position to fail when it would better serve playing to their strengths?

CUNBAN STATING THE OBVIOUS IN HIS LAST 3-4 POSTS AND THINKING WE WILL BE IMPRESSED .........

CLARIFIED BUTTER IS ALSO GOOD FOR BAKING COD W/PANKO BREADCRUMBS .

DAVID V.........

ODIN INVENTED THE USEAGE OF THE WORD OF IF IN FOOTBALL BLOGS .

IF doesn't get us into the playoffs or another super bowl championship. I'm tired of the Dolphins living in a world of IF while the Jets and Pats are living in a world of WHEN!

BTW, I think we as the fans should actually get some of the say in what`s fair or not, take into account that over the last 15 seasons or so a boat load of new NFL Stadiums and facilities have gone up with our tax $ !!!!

Let`s take the new Texas Stadium into account here as an example of what I`m talking about, the stadium itself cost a whopping 1.7 Billion, of which Jerry Jones put up 300 Million, with the rest coming in tax hikes to the State of Texas which put up the other 1.4 Bil over 3 years. I guess it`s good were in the middle of the worst economic crisis in our history or Jones might have asked the State to put it all up.

I also wonder if the league takes into account the economic strangle hold those stadiums in Pitt and Cleveland most have leveled on those predominantly industrial towns, so I`ll ask everyone again, shouldn`t we have our say ? I also believe that given the current state of affairs if they don`t play the 2011 season they will be hit with there biggest crises ever when alot of turned of fans stop buying merch or spending on astronomically high tickets.

Thank you, Mr. Aloco, for your Clarified Butter tips and stories. It was a blessing to read them.

I am interested in all Clarified Butter experiences.

Since Joe Robbie was built without a dime of taxpayer money I'm not so sure South Florida would qualify in that NFL "fans voice" equation...at least not to the extent as elsewhere.

Dear Mr. Salguero

Clarified butter : is anhydrous milk fat rendered from butter to separate the milk solids and water from the butterfat.[1] Typically, it is produced by melting butter and allowing the different components to separate by density. The water evaporates, some solids float to the surface and are skimmed off, and the remainder of the milk solids sink to the bottom and are left behind when the butter fat (which would then be on top) is poured off.

Hope this clears up any misconceptions

Soiled :)

David V,

The bottom line is we DON'T know if it's going to work out or not. The Panthers don't know if Newton is going to work out and he went first overall. What you want your GM and scouts to do is their homework and make the best decisions they can. I think they got a good player in Pouncey but we'll have to see how his game translates to the NFL. There are NO guarantees when it comes to drafting players, as guys like Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Detroit wide receivers etc....have shown. You can't fault Ireland for the thinking. Now we just have to hope he chose wisely.

ALOCO!

What is this "IF" crap you brown donkey!?!?

Go eat your cheetos you FARMER!

What now, the soap operas are over so you're going to mess with ME?

You ROACH! You beady eye'd little RODENT!

I WILL DESTROY YOU!!!!

Dear Mr. Salguero

Billionaire owners vs Millionaire players doesn't really affect me, but you know what does ?

If there is no NFL season will the writer/Blog owners lock out us Fan posters.

Will Blog owners lock out us posters who actually create all the owners blog hits.

Writers across the country are bitching they arent getting enough credit, but its us posters that are creating all the blog hits.

Watch out fellow posters Mr. Salguero doesn't care about us....lock out is comming, look for Mr. Salguero and writers of blogs across the country to bring in scab posters.

I can see it now

Scab poster : Dear Mr. Salgucho

Don't you twist my words you little Danish Baker Boy, cause I'll slap EM out cha mouf!!!!

DO NOT DEFY ME!!!!

YJB,

JRS is one of the very few completely privately built Stadiums were an acception to the rule thanks to then City officials being cheap and not wanting to completely overhaul the OB back in 84. Robbie needed a new Stadium to bring the SB back to Miami and the City administrators balked but if it were today we probably get funding hands down. All Ross really has to do is go public and threaten to move the team to L.A. really something like that is all it would take.

Incognito was a center in college & Pouncey played gaurd WHY FLOP EVERYTHING AROUND!!! Let the kids play what they are used to playing & maybe it will prevent injuries???? WHAT A CONCEPT!!!

Mr. Soiled, it was with deep gratitude that I read your synopsis of Clarified Butter.

May all blessings be upon you for sharing these beautiful Clarified Butter details.

CLARIFIED BUTTER SHOULD BE SALTD BUTTER NOT UNSALTED .

odin,
