Scout loves AFC East draft work (except for Fins)

More draft grades coming your way. Normally, I give you mine (if you force me) and move on. But I want to share with you today the AFC East draft grades put out recently by Dave Razzano.

Why Razzano? He's got the credibility of having 22 years of scouting experience with the San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals. He was around for five Super Bowls and three Super Bowl wins with those teams. So again, he has that credibility guys such as Mel Kiper and others (me included) do not have.

Razzano is not a big fan of the Dolphins draft. On his blog he gave the Dolphins' draft a D. It was one of five D grades Razzano passed out, with Miami joining Detroit, Atlanta, Carolina, Seattle. Razzano did not give out any Fs so, basically, the Dolphins got the lowest grade he gave out.

"OC Mike Pouncey is solid but the Dolphins still lack a quality QB," Razzano wrote. "The next two picks of RB Dan Thomas and WO Edmond Gates look like back-up types.  Late round DC Jimmy Wilson will contribute early on special teams."

That's tough. It gets tougher considering Razzano apparently liked the work Buffalo, New York and New England did.

He gave the Patriots an A. He gave the Bills a B. He gave the stinkin' Jets a B.

phin 44,
i understand what you are saying but misi did a very good job against the run in 2010. he needs to develop his skills as a pass rusher.
jones and clemons are still young players but both have played very well in the short amount of time they have played for this team. i expect both of them to be much improved this year. clemons has sub 4.4 speed. i didn't realize that until i looked it up.
vontae davis not a cover guy? he is one of the best in the league. i don't understand where that came from.
thomas fumbled in college. i can't argue with that but fumbling issues can be addressed by a running backs coach. if he didn't produce the numbers he did in college i would have a problem with him but you can't argue with how productive he was; one of the best in the past two years.

Good thing nobody knows who the heck this jerk off is!!!!!!

dm1

I agree they collectively have a ton of potential, but until said potential is realized, it is only that...potential.

Lets hope we get a couple of quality FA and our rookie class does well.

I still think it will be hard to catch the patriots and probably even the jets. Sad, that we have the 4th best coach as well.

Sucker, those are your opinions, they are not truths. Also, see how fun name calling can be? Grow up Sally!

I'd gladly talk to you some other time when you either:

A. Wake up to reality
B. Obtain a copy of Websters dictionary
C. Become UNBIASED

FYI, If I'm so wrong in my analysis & TRUTHS about this team, we would be a playoff team & in ALLOT better shape than what we are. But we aren't. You want to give credit where i's not due. If you were right, this team would be better than it is. But it isn't, is it? PROOF IS IN DA PUDDING!

You make it sound like we are more good than we are bad yet the results do not mesh with your arguments. Your being oblivious because your fanboyism clouds your judgment.

That is painfully obvious for all to see.

Lets face it, if we had a starting caliber QB, the playing field might be a little more level.

then again, our coaching staff is nothing to to be overly excited about either.

Dirk @ 10:19,
what happens if they don't? who thinks like that? gee, i could also say what happens if long doesn't play well at left tackle? what if other teams find a way to shut down wake? what if paul solai doesn't play like he did last year?
i can understand going into a season with cautious optimism but that's more like cautious pessimism. both jones and clemons played well last year and really impressed. if they were on another team the coaches would expect them to improve over last year. why wouldn't fins coaches? as far as smith and davis are concerned they are two of the best in the league. you can't argue with that. their biggest problem last year was hanging on to interceptions. IF (to satisfy your way of thinking) they can hang on to the ball this year i would expect possible double-digit int's from them this year. realize, in order for db's to have the chances they had last year at int's they would need to be good cover corners because they were in position to make the int.

Haters all on them

WELL IF WAS THAT GOOD HE WOULDN't BE A FORMER SCOUT.

HE WOULD BE A GM.

You can't grade a draft before the players play a snap of football no way around it

Moriarity,
you're not opinionated? "ireland and sparano will be fired by the end of the year."

the potential is there, but coaching is another serious issue. I remember last year when henne was actually playing well, they would take him out and bring in the wild cat which would miserably fail and Henne would have to come back to a 3rd and 15....now we have Dubol. Not too excited.

SO NOW WE're GOING TO LISTEN TO ANOTHER BLOGGER.

DID HE WATCH THE DRAFT FROM A COUCH LIKE ME.

Armando your love affair w old man Palmer is PUKE INDUCING

Vince Young is MUCH BETTER CHOICE

U seem to omit how strong of an arm Young has

How much stronger Young is physically

Young is YOUNGER

Young is tough on his feet

and, Oh yeah, Young TORCHED THE DOLPHINS WITH HIS ARM ONLY 2 SEASONS AGO

Home has spoken

everyone's opinion is valued. At the end, they are all just that...opinions.

No one really knows for sure how the phins will do.

Let's look at what Armando posted in today's column and then decide if this this EX-scout has any clue what he's talking about.

So he's worked with the 49ers, Seahawks and Cardinals for 20+ years. Been there for the Super Bowl wins in SF. It's funny....the way I've always heard it, Bill Walsh was the one responsible for putting those Super Bowl teams together. He had a knack for accumulating great talent and for finding guys like Joe Montana later in the draft. His coaching methods were considered revolutionary and his was considered a real 'genius' of the game. Listen to guys like Montana, Rice, Young and Craig talk about this guy some time. They all loved playing for him. The success he had made him a slam dunk for the Hall of Fame, which he entered before passing away. Now OBVIOUSLY we've all had it wrong all this time...I had nothing to do with Walsh....it's been this 'expert' all along. Give me a BREAK!! If this guy knew something, why is he an EX-SCOUT? Geez...if a guy like Rick Spielman can be involved in the game for as long as he has, then anybody can last 20+ years in the game.

So he doesn't like our draft...who cares! How on God's green earth does he give an A to the Pats? The consensus is that he over-reached on a number of picks and did nothing for the lass rush. Again...this grade is based on REPUTATION only. I'm not buying this! And he gave the Lions a D??? Great call!! No way guys like Fairley, Young and Leshoure will help the Lions at all....no quality in those picks!! Yep...this is the guy we should be listening to...move over Mayock and Kiper, we've got a REAL expert we should be listening to.

Home Thruth ,

Can you be a little more pesimistic and negative?

who cares what the draft experts/scouts say, these are some of the same bozos that had Todd Blackledge,Ken O'brien, and Tony Eason rated above Dan Marino and we know how that turned out. Go back and find the video of Mel Kiper ejaculating over the Raiders picking Jamarcus Russell, same deal. Let's see these guys on the field before we crucify Ireland/Sparano. I personally like what they did, needed a center, drafted a center, needed a rb, got a rb, needed speed at WR, got that.

Dolphins filled a few holes in draft: Pouncey will be a good center .... Thomas will be one of the two RBs (who is the other one?) .... the Fullback from Tulsa seems like a good role player .... and Gates (the fastest WR in the draft) will keep the defenses from double teaming Marshall

Now .... for part two of the offseason ... Free Agency and Trades

1. Sign Ronnie Brown (as our 2nd RB ) ... bye bye Rickey

2. Reggie Bush will add speed ... and versatility

3. Trade 2012 4th round pick for Carson Palmer ... he can battle with Henne for starting QB job

4. Trade 2012 5th round pick for Albert Hainesworth ..... use him as DT when we alternate form 3-4 defense to 4-3

AND .... IF ALL OF THE ABOVE HAPPENS ... we can be a 10-6 or 11-5 team next year

what are you whiper snappers yaping about??????????

Don't you people have jobs to go to? The unemployment line is just opened. Get going! At least, go pick up your food stamps. Bunch of loosers.

Dolphins SUCK.

Jets will eat your lunch for you.

Hail to the 2011 AFC champs!!!!!

JETS JETS JETS

7-9 two years in a row. Nothings says more than that. To say we are close to being a playoff team is meaningless if we aren't getting in the playoffs. Every season the fans say we are close. Well, we've won how many playoff games in the last decade? And now ask yourself again what exactly are we close to?

Jets have won 4 playoff games in the past two years!!!!!!!

Wishful thinking does not make the team any better. Remember every football town in the country thinks they are a playoff team this time of year.

dm1 @ 10:19

Those are your opinions & ones I REALLY do not share. Sorry. I don't think Clemmons played anything better than average. Free safeties make big plays. Can you name one he made other than the fumble he caused vs Pitt. Which turned out to be meaningless? Just one.

As for Smith & Davis, two of the best in the league? Now you can choose to disagree with me, but that is HIGHLY OPINIONATED. They are good, yes, but 2 of the best? Come on!

People can have opinions. You seem to knock JS or anyone for not agreeing with you. Just because people disagree doesn't make them negative, a pessimist, clueless or whatever. It means you don't see things the same.

That doesn't make me, him, you or anyone wrong. You are VERY defensive. I happen to agree with Joe because we should base our opinions on what we see & know, not what we think.

Naturally we have clouded views as fans but you shouldn't knock people for not agreeing seeing eye to eye with you. That's petty.

except for the Jets.

we ARE a playoff team every year NOW!!!

JETS JETS JETS

I see where Ryan Mallett has promised 'payback' against the Dolphins for passing on him in the draft. He has promised to be the BEST clip board holder in the league for the next FIVE years. He has also vowed not to invite any of the current Dolphins players to his next bong party.

Geez.....does this guy EVER shut up!! If he can be half as good a player as he is a yapper, he's well on his way to the Hall of Fame. Can't wait for this kid to meet Wake face to face....down goes Mallett!!

Moriarity,
you're not opinionated? "ireland and sparano will be fired by the end of the year."

Posted by: dm1dolphan | May 05, 2011 at 10:33 AM

Sucker Sally, yes, they will be fired if they don't win more than 7 games. Most agree.

Why? Because it's more of a fact than an opinion. PLEASE, get a grip! You're an exercise in futility!

The kids got a screw loose!!...he's going to look menacingly at Dolphins players from behind his clipboard....be afraid....be VERY afraid!

Watched Path to the draft yesterday all 3 anaylists liked our draft, not so much the Jets, Pats and Bills. I guess that just proves there is a different opinion for every butt.
Also the guy from the Dallas morning news said that D. Thomas was the steal of the 2nd round. He has the highest rating of all draft niks for the past 5 years and was rated the top 5 this year. So there you go.

LOL@ CRAIG M

FUNNY SHIITE!!!

Wonder why we turn over coaches every three years and the sucessful coached keep theirs. Media and fans start stirring the pot and make it hot enough in Maimi that the coach wants to leave town.

WELL MAYBE EVERYONE IN THE FO BELIEVE WE HAVE A FRANCHISE QB.

HE HAS SHOWN SIGNS FOR A YEAR AND A HALF AND THIS COULD BE HIS YEAR.

IF HE GET 4,000 YARDS 28TDS AND 8INTS WITH THOMAS GOING 1,100 YARDS POUNCEY GIVEN UP 5 SACKS MARSHALL GET 1,300 YDS 9TDS.

THEN WE WILL HAVE HAD A GREAT DRAFT.

CHAD IS ON THE COME UP.

BUT IF HE HAS A BAD YEAR WE MOVE ON.

ALL THE HENNE "HATERS" DON'T LIKE HIM FOR WHAT EVER REASON.

THE HENNE "SUPPORTERS" DON'T HATE OR LIKE HIM BUT KNOW IF HE GETS IT THEN THE FINS ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

IF HE FAIL UNLIKE THE HATERS THINK WE FAIL.

WE COULD START ALL OVER SURE BUT WHAT'S THE POINT NO QUATERBACK IS A SURE THING.

BRADY WENT 199 OVERALL.

LEAF WENT 2.

BRESS AND FAVRE WAS 2nd ROUNDERS.

EVERYONE IN THE NFL WAS TALKING ABOUT LOCKER LAST YEAR.

THIS YEAR OUT OF NOWHERE COMES NEWTON.

NOW LUCK UNTIL SOMEBODY COMES FOR HIS SPOT.

IF WE DID GET LUCK HE WON'T BE BETTER THAN HENNE.

vmmmmmb dh[jo'[dgfmh

HEY REX:

I CAN'T SAY NOTHING I WISH YOU WERE THE COACH OF THE FINS.

Parcells took Sparano and recommended Rex to the Jets. Makes you wonder.

REX CAN'T BE CONTROLLED BY PARCELLS .... HE HIRED SPARANO B/C HE CAN CONTROL HIM ........

So Aloco is saying he hired loser Sparano to lose games and recommended the winner Rex to the Jets and we paid him millions to do that. Crazy.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FINS AND THE JETS ARE

1. REX

2. HOLMES

3. KELLER

4. EDWARDS

MARSHALL IS BETTER THAN ANYONE BUT NOT ALL THREE.

YOU CAN LIVE WITH DOUBLING BRANDON BUT YOU CAN'T DOUBLE THE JETS WIDEOUTS.

PLUS BOTH OF THE JETS WRS CAN BEAT SINGLE COVERAGE AND KELLER CAN BEAT MOST LBS.

TAKE IT FOR WHAT's IT WORTH

THE TRUTH.

All u negative peops we didn't have the luxury of picking mallet and how do you know he will even pan out . This was a good draft we filled needs that will make team solid . Did anyone watch every game last year and still say it was all henne fault weren't paying attention . Most of you guys do nothing but complain ..... please find another team.

@11:23

Doesn't stop there. Jets have a better D, better Special Teams and far better coaching. Our coaching will be even worse this year on offense. Dabol too inexperienced, his previous boss dissed him, the other coaches are rookies at their new position. We have about 5 new excuses for Henne to play like crap again.

jets fans posting on this board:

joe schmoe
dirk the diggler

the first play of the preseason will be a long pass to edmond gates to serve notice on the rest of the league that the fins will be going downtown!

Unfortunately, a lot of folks here think Daniel Thomas "The Train" went to some backwater, cow college, because they couldn't find K-State on a map. Please get a clue. Its in the Big XII, you know, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Okie State, Texas? I watched ALL of the games he played in the last two years. If he doesn't have the IT factor, then I don't know who does. You think they can't teach ball control? Vision, elusiveness, and football IQ is hard to teach. Curing fumbling is not, unless you have freakishly small hands (Ricky Williams) or just don't care (Adrian Peterson).

ignorant fan who believes in santa claus, the tooth fairy, and elmer fudd:

Gates will be mainly a returner in 2011. No way he just walks on and replaces Hartline. You guys forget every season that 99% of rookies just don't start off playing at pro bowl level, it takes time.

Not that anything these people say mean a thing...but most people LOVED what Detroit did by getting another weapon for the offense and basically making their defensive line a brick wall. Most also did not love the Patriots b/c they keep stock piling picks and really haven't made an impact with them. Taking Mallet was a luxury and they still have one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL, this is a fact. Even their fans did not like what they did, but I guess all fans hate what their teams do.

It's funny, if he gives the fins an A, everyone would be rejoicing. He gives us a D and everyone says it doesn't matter, or we won't know until they play, etc..

I'm a phins fan and I understand that most of us are homers, but don't let that blind you to the reality of what the Dolphins are. They suck right now, and they will be no better than 7-9 next year.

I've said it a few times before and I'll say it again. Until they bring someone in who understands how to run a passing offense and draft/build this team toward that end, we will never win a Super Bowl. Every coach we've had since Shula has tried to implement a run first offense, except for Cam Cameron, who had the right idea but should never have been hired as a head coach.

Look at the Atlanta Falcons. Remember that Parcells was on a plane on his way to Atlanta to sign on with them before WH literally stole him away. Instead of Parcells they hire Thomas Dimitroff as the GM. Parcells takes Jake Long (lets build a great Oline and run the ball!), Dimitroff takes Matt Ryan, brings in Tony Gonzalez and builds his offense to throw the ball. Last year we finished 7-9. They finished 13-3. We move to get a backup running back, they move up and draft Julio Jones. I wish WH would have let Parcells go to Atlanta and would have hired Dimitroff instead.... There's a GM who knows how to build a team that can win in today's NFL.

How many of you wrote down the Buffalo, Detroit and Cleveland games as automatic wins prior to the 2010 season? Maybe everyone, including me. This year you will do the same. Dreaming is fine when you are sleeping, not in real life.

I agree this was an"i hope i don't get fired draft". The dolphins front office are a bunch of chickens.

A lot of people are bashing Miami's draft because they didn't get a QB, not realizing that not getting a QB this year is a good thing. This year's crop of QB's is terrible, and if we picked a Mallet or a Stanzi or a Dalton, we'd just be wasting a pick.

Does anyone think any of those guys are gonna be any better than Henne? Henne may not be a good QB, but why waste a pick on a QB that will not be any better than what we have?

The only reason there were so many 'name' QB's in the draft this year is because there are so many teams that need QB's. It has nothing to do with their talent.

Miami was smart on passing.

TFK

TFK its true. i see all the big mallett fans have been quiet since the draft. they realize if the guy fell to 74, no pro saw him worth 15 or even close. the team that did take him had so many picks and no use for a qb it was no big deal, they will probably just use him for trade bait in the future.

TFK,

You don't know if any of these QBs are going to be any good. Everyone thought Ryan Leaf would be a star and than Tom Brady would be a backup at best. They may all turn out to be busts or pro bowlers. The bottom line is, teams that understand you need a franchise QB that don't have one took a chance. You can't win the lotto if you don't buy a ticket. Teams like Detroit and Minn reached on QBs. They took a chance. And if Locker or Ponder turn out to be pro bowlers, those two teams will be winning Super Bowls much sooner than Miami ever will.

DJ

To all the guys who PREACH to us constantly about 'you can't win without a first round QB' let's get them on record on how the four first round QBs will do this year and in their careers. Let's also get them on record as to how another APPARENT first round talent will do. Let's hold them accountable for their thoughts if and when they are wrong. If you want to talk the talk, you'd better be prepared to walk the walk.

Go...you're on...

Guys will tell you it's OK to take a guy at 15 (Mallett) when in reality it doesn't matter that he wasn't drafted until 74. It's OK to reach for a guy to try and make your offence better and if you're wrong it doesn't matter, at least you tried. However, when they take a guy like Pat White at 44 (also a couple of rounds early, like Mallett) to try and make the offence better, they are a bunch of morons and should all be fired!!

Kind of seems like a double standard, doesn't it?

everyone is 0-0, last season is history

next season is a mystery

those who say we're not close to a p-o team might be right but we went to the p-o's after going 1-15

so last years results don't mean jack, performance maybe means something, but there's a whole bunch of new factors going into the mix that is every given sunday

bring it on

in my opinion the fins will be better ( i have no proof!),

i think those who hate our coach and fo have not given them long enough, they've made mistakes

maybe they'll learn from them, maybe their replacements would be worse

(imo the bills will be better too)

i am biased

i'm f**ing hungry

Everyone is grading the Phins the same way - the most important factor going into their grades is the fact that they think Miami needs a QB and they didn't draft one.

It's practically guaranteed that none of these guys have watched any decent amount of game tape on Henne, and thought through all the factors that played a role in his overall performance, and the team's overall performance. So I'm not really concerned with those jokers.

With Henne aside, if you objectively consider all the issues the offense had last year, you'll come to find they've addressed those needs the best they could:
1- Henning's predictable play calling - new OC
2- Running game sucked- drafted RB
3- Interior OL sucked (which also affected running game) - Drafted top C in Pouncey
4- lack of speed/explosiveness- drafted Gates

I think they've done well, and Henne will end up proving the doubters wrong.

Love it! The fact that he gave us a bad grade just confirms my thoughts that we may be knocking on the door of the play-offs!

HEY JETS FANS, SO YOU WON A MEASLY 4 PLAYOFF GAMES AND NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT, REMEMBER THE BILLS OF THE 90S 4 SB AND NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT,OH AND BY THE WAY THE PHINS DEFENSE WAS #6 THE JETS #11 GET YOUR CRAP STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU RUN YOUR PENIS SUCKER!!!!!!

YOU HAVE WON NOTHING!!!!!

Ithaca,

They are also not done yet. I expected there will be an addition or two in FA too.

I brought this up yesterday but you almost get the feeling that some of these jokers care more about being 'right' than about the team doing well. Some of these guys won't be happy until Henne is run out of town and then they will direct their wrath towards somebody else....so sad!!

Carolina had the first pick in the draft, how do you give them a D??

Razzanno gives Miami and even Detroit a D? Thats funny because most if not all people grade the Lions very high.....Tell Razzanno to go back to sleep.....coulndn't care less what he thinks..
