'Payback," Mallett? Really? Get a clue, kid

The Boston Herald did good work in peeling back some layers of Ryan Mallett's personality while visiting with the family of the lightning rod third-round draft pick.

Unfortunately, the newsy portion of this interesting look at Mallett makes the former Arkansas quarterback look like something of an oaf because it includes an account of what Mallett told his family when the Miami Dolphins failed to pick him in the second round of the draft.

Before [New England Patriots coach Bill] Belichick called, the Herald writes, Mallett was almost a Dolphin, as the team informed the family they were interested in trading for him.

“They took another guy,” Jim Mallett said told the paper. “Ryan said, ‘Payback.’ He remembers it all.”

Payback? Really?

Let me count the ways this is simply stupid:

No. 1: As I have reported to you, the Dolphins did indeed attempt to trade up to take Mallett. A club source told me "we tried to get our hands on him" but that the Dolphins simply didn't have enough ammunition they were willing to give to get that high in the third round.

So already, we have a problem. If the Dolphins did indeed phone the Mallett clan to announce they planned to trade up for the QB (a fact I have not been able to verify), then Mallett must have assumed they were trying to do that in the second round. I doubt they told him they were trying to pick him in the second round because they clearly had Daniel Thomas as their target in that round and picked him then. Had they been targetting Mallett, they could have had Mallett because he was available.

So perhaps the team just told Mallett they would try to trade up for him, and he assumed it was in the second round, not realizing the team meant in the third round. Obviously, no one else had Mallett pegged as their second-rounder. Obviously, the Dolphins wanted him in the third round because they tried to get to him in that round. Obviously, we have a failure to communicate here.

And that makes me thankful Mallett is not expected to learn Miami's playbook and be the starting quarterback this year since he and the club can't get their signals straight on something so simple as a phone call.

No. 2: Mallett must have a great, long, elephantine memory. He's going to need it because with Tom Brady as New England's starting quarterback now, Mallett may have to wait a looong time to remember that "payback" pledge. He's likely to be a 30-year-old first-year starting quarterback if things go well for Brady so I assume Mallett will find a way to keep his Spring 2011 payback promise prominent in his mind until the Fall of 2017.

Ridiculous.

No. 3: Does this kid have zero foresight? Does he not recognize the NFL is an odd fraternity? By promising to collect "payback" on the Dolphins, he has possibly closed the door to any future with the Dolphins. What happens if he's a free agent in five years? What happens if the Dolphins were to reconsider things and want to trade for him next year? What were to happen if Jeff Ireland got a job running another NFL team and needed a quarterback when Mallett's available? Mallett's comments might turn off Ireland and thus close off a possible avenue of escape from duty as Brady's caddy. Think, kid, think!

No. 5: Ryan Mallett's desire for payback meet Bill Belichick's intolerance of individualism. Bill Belichick's intolerance of individualism, meet your newest project, Ryan Mallett's desire for payback. Patriot lobotomy on the horizon.

No. 5: One of the reasons NFL teams did not invest a first round pick or a second round pick in Mallett is his disposition. I reported to you the Dolphins were not absolutely sold on his personality in order to pick him higher than the third round. Well, if the adversity of not getting selected where he expected set Mallett off, what might the adversity of getting his nose knocked off his face during a game do when his team needs him back in the lineup for a possible fourth-quarter comeback? Vowing revenge for a draft slight is one thing. Brady did that. But Brady didn't speak of it for years, until he had already established himself and it became lore rather than news on profootballtalk.

Mallett brought this perceived slight to light less than a week after the draft ended and before he's ever taken a snap. It makes him look petty, particularly since he won't be able to do very much about it unless Brady gets hurt.

There's nothing about this vow of "payback" that makes Ryan Mallett look heroic. And if he doesn't get that, perhaps he should add that to the reasons he was a third-round pick rather than the first-rounder his natural football gifts suggest he would otherwise have been.

I would like to know what all the New England Veterans who know shooting off at the pie hole does nothing to win games have to say about Mallets remarks. All Mallet did here was write a check with his mouth that the guys who DO play will have to cash with their play. All before he so much as took a practice snap in the NFL.
Miami will not be the same team as the past 3 years. The patriots will be watching the preseason (if there is one) with great interest to see what they get in game one and I doubt Miami shows them much. NE will look the same as they have since Belechick took over (wich is damn good enough)... I normally look at games against NE as 30/70 against Miami. I do not in game one, being at home and with an entirely different look, Miami could very well place a defensive effort good enough to allow a New Offense to score enough to beat NE. And one of two is good enough.

TOM BRADY IS WORTH 160 MILLION AND COUNTING .....

HENNE IS WORT 345 DOLLARS AND SUBTRACTING .

PALMER WORTH 82 MILLION AND COUNTING.

M.VICK STILL BARROWING TO PAY DEBT .

Dear Mr. Aloco

Thank you for your kind words :)

Soiled :)

I hope they let the mullet play a few downs!

Mando, our biggest concern right now isn't what Mallet (or his family) had to say about our draft picks. It isn't about what "grade" we should give our draft. And, it's not about if Henne can be a starting QB in the NFL!

Our biggest concern right now is (and should be) Daboll!

He couldn't give Pouncey the play-book the other day because:

HE DOESN'T HAVE ONE MADE UP YET!!!!!!!

He is NOT known for being a great offensive mind! For making adjustments to an offence when needed! Or, for offensive game planning! But, he's been on the payroll for a while and you'd expect that he and Sparano would have sat down and created a basic playbook by now! Wouldn't you? Isn't that the first thing you're supposed to do as an Offensive Coordinator?
Rumor says that he explained his system to Henne. But, no one knows if Henne has anything to study from. The Fins are gonna get fined for that. But, the truth is:

THERE IS NO PLAYBOOK!!!!!

You guys really don't get just how close we are to winning a super bowl. We are two signings away from a super bowl.

1. OG. If we can land one of the top free agent OG we'll have THE best OL in the league. That combined with a WR that can stretch the field (Vincent Jackson) and we'll have one of the best offenses in the league.

2. Our defense is top 5 every year. With Odrick and Edds returning this year that will be no different.

Dear Mr. Salguero

With the rapid advancements of todays technology and Moore's Law do you think that in my lifetime we will see the day when Mr. Aloco is able to type without the capslock enabled ?

Hang in there Mr. Aloco scientists are working on a cure.

Soiled :)

WOULD ANY ONE OF OUR SMART FANS WOULD GIVE BP A CREDIT IF WE GO TO THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR FOR BUILDING SUCH A STRONG TEAM ?

How's this for a sceneario: The Pat's at 12-2 are home to Miami in week 16. They have the division wrapped up and will sit Brady. Miami needs the win to reach the playoffs. Mallett starts and picks Miami apart.

Do I want this to happen, NO!! Could it happen? Maybe. Will it happen? You never know.

Dear Mr. Salguero

"Our biggest concern right now is (and should be) Daboll!"

This reminds me...whats the zipcode for Hell ?

I want to send Dan Henning a thank you card for service's rendered.

Soiled :)

Melfins,

A more likely scenario is Mallett gets picked apart by the Dolphin secondary and beaten up by the front seven.

Why does Mallett have our attention ?

Just sayin,

Cheers,

Love my harley, please look twice for us. Thanks dolphin fans.

Cheers,

It's playoff or Bust for this regime. We passed on Ingram, Mallet & Murray and Hankerson. Your draft should generate at least 1 Pro Bowler. But ill be optomistic. I guess. Lol

WOW, I didn't know there were 32 rookie probowlers every year.......thats AMAZING..... idiot!!!

We still have sparano. 8-8.

So it's official!

Dan Hennings is rotting in Hell!

All the children sing............

In case of accidents he ALWAYS took his Mommmmmm...............

The All American bullet headed Saxon Mothers son..........

Zap!

All the children sing...........

Hey Bungalo Bill

What did ya Kill

What did ya Kill..............

Cowher, please coach the dolphins in 2012.

cheers,

Aloco,

You don't have to have a passport if you ride with me.

I make midnight channel crossings about 3 times a week.

Pay no attention to the cargo deck and enjoy the dark quiet ride. Just help me keep on eye out for the ocean liners and EVERYTHING will be GROOVY.............

The Dolphins tried to trade up for Mallet?!! You are all FFFFing IDIOTS.!!! The Fins traded up for a 2nd round pick and picked a no-name R.B.
The PATS got Mallet in the 3rd round!!!! He will be Brady's replacement in 3 years!!! Mando get a clue!!! The problem is the FFFFFFING COACHES DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH A PLAYER ( HOW TO DEVELOP HIM) AND WANT SOMEONE WHO CAN GO ON AUTO -PILOT, KIND OF LIKE A LATCH KEY KID. WHEN IN THE HELL IS SOMEONE GOING TO REALIZE THAT THIS COACHING STAFF IS TOTALLY INCOMPETENT!!! THE PATS WILL RULE THE DIVISION FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS MINIMUM!!!

FINSARMEGEDDON,

Cheers, to YOU.

There were several other Q.B.s that the Fins could have taken and they didn't!!!!The organization does not give a crap about the players on the field!!1 They just want Fat Assed Celebs to walk on the puke orange carpet so Ross can sit theere and pull on his old wrinkled pickle. By all damn means lets sell 1% shares to Alysa Malano, Lady Gaga, Selma Hyak, and Gwenneth Paltrow.!!!!!

Eff the mullet! Go Dolfins! We'll B fine this year! Lose ALL games, get Andrew Luck! Simple, like me!

Fans have a very hard time realizing the NFL is a business, a rich man buys a team as an investment first and foremost. Huizenga bought the team, never won jack, yet sold it years later for around 800% profit. That is, by any investment standard, an astounding ROI. Ross too will make money on this franchise no matter what he does. Winning is nice, great, wonderful, but it really is secondary.

Ross, is a complete idiot. Just look at all the STUPID things he has done. Long gone are the days of Joe Robbie.

Cheers,

Yeah, instead of worrying about celebrities, why didn't they go get us another bust of QB from the weakest QB class in recent history?

I can't believe they'd waste a pick on Pouncey when thwey knew full well they could've wasted one on Mallet!

The Audacity!

When he sells the team for significantly more money than he paid, only STUPID people will call him stupid.

We should've traded up for Kap, not the Vikes!

Whaaaaa!

Whiiiiine!

Whiiiiimper!

All rich people are not STUPID. But Ross is.

Just sayin,

Cheers,

DIO,
TRUE. HOWEVER WAYNE HAD SOMETHING TO SELL!!! I WAS WATCHING THE MADDOG TRIBUTE LAST NIGHT AND THE Q.B.S FROM THE WANNY AND JOHNSON YEARS HAD MORE HEART THAN HENNE DOES. ONE OF THE FORMER FINS SAID LAST NIGHT ( I BELIEVE IT WAS NICK B. )SAID MADDOG TOLD HIM THAT HENNE WOULD BE A GREAT NFL Q.B. wHEN THE CAMERA SHOWED HENNE'S FACE THERE WAS NO EMOTION WHAT SO EVER. THE GUY IS A CLUELESS IDIOT, SO WHAT'S ROSS GOT TO SELL. ROTTEN FRUIT!!!??/

**Breaking News**

This just in:

Ross is stoopid.

I'm sure none of you figured this out for yourselves(Harbaugh/SpOrano fiasco), so I just thought I would fill you in and bring you up to speed.

Your Welcome!

What did Wayne have to sell? A sad sack team with a long stretch of sad sack FO's and no playoff wins. There are only 32 NFL teams on the planet, their value only goes up.

EVEN IF THEY WOULD HAVE PICKED A HIGH SCHOOL QUARTERBACK , THEY WOULD HAVE SENT A MESSAGE THAT THEY ARE LISTENING TO THE FANS!!!

Rotten Fruit, is my vote.

What will define this draft one way or the other is if Pouncey turns out to be a top ten center, which would justify picking him at 15. Ireland clearly sounded enthused to me and reiterated that they did draft him as a center.

Some of the pundits, including Kiper, said Jake Long wasn't really and NFL left tackle, something about not enough swivel in his hips, and he would end up at RT. Ireland clarified that after the draft and said, nope, Jake Long is a LT, that is where he is going. He was right then so I will give him the benefit of the doubt this time as well.

Ross is stoopid.

Henne sucks.

Sporano is a fist pumper.

Whaa Wah Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..................

I thought there for second I might have accidentally clicked on the slum sentinel.

Yeah, teams always go straight to the Super Bowl when the FO listens to the FAN!!!!

Dir?

Dep Dep!

Dip Dip de doo!

0X80,
THE FINS DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEFINE A DRAFT!!! EVEN IF POUNCEY PAYS OFF ( LIKE LONG ) HOW MANY PEOPLE BUY LINEMAN'S JERSEY'S AND CHEER FOR A GREAT BLOCK!!!!?? HOW MANY PEOPLE SAY , "IWANT MY KID TO GROW UP AND BE THE GREATEST FOOTBALL CENTER OF ALL TIME???

I've been trying to blow out the fires of the flaming Mallett-to-Fins fans for a while now. My main argument? ... Mallett is just plain not smart enough to be an NFL QB: bad decisions on and off the field. Feeling very vindicated that he's already stepped in a pile, and we haven't even seen him play. Told ya so.

RIDER, WHAT'S YOUR BID FOR ROTTEN FRUIT?

Center?

Heck no!

I been training all three of my boys to be kickers and punters.

They get exceptional pay at a reletively safe position.

What planet are you dolts from anyways-Duh!!!!

FINS,

They cheer for the RB, QB, WR, or TE making the great play BECAUSE of that great block. One thing leads to the other.

Here is a piece that came out from the New England Press about their boy Mallet... Have a read. Will give you some insight to what they would have thought had we picked him...

http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/article_external/5_reasons_why_ryan_mallett_is_nothing_like_tom_brady/4675096?linksrc=foxrg_nfl

No biggie, but I do tend to agree with the author....

I always watch the O-line for a great block.

Last year I kept watching and watching and watching.............

This is why I can honestly tell you that McQuistan and Carey absolutely SUCK!

Yeah, Henne should have been able to carry this team into the playoffs single handedly last year.

No mention of the fact that our LG was playing Center and the right side of our line wasn't playing at all.

Derek,

I'll copy and paste it, it's worth it.

PS: Guys, pay no attention to the part about Mallet blowing off two teams interviews to go out partying.

His "AGENT" already explained all that-ROTFLMFAO!!!!

-A few days ago Ryan Mallett claimed he was exactly like Tom Brady. He said he was in a similar situation coming in as a backup competing for the starting job. Did I hear that right Ryan? Your in a similar situation that Tom Brady? I’m going to list a few reasons why your nothing like Tom Brady.

1. Arm Strength The first thing I’m going to say about Ryan Mallett is positive. I want to get all my positive comments about Mallett out of the way because I’m not sold on him as a franchise quarterback once Brady retires. You have better arm strength than Tom Brady coming out of college. I will give you that because Tom Brady was a project when it came to arm strength the cannon arm is something you have that Tom Brady.

2. Size You have better size than Tom Brady which is another thing Brady didn’t have coming out of college.

3. Intangibles Tom Brady had great accuracy, leadership, and intangibles coming out of Michigan even though he lacked the arm strength and physical tools. He sat behind Drew Bledsoe for 2 years and became a solid starter. Ryan Mallett does not have good accuracy. His leadership was questionable coming out of the SEC, and if he had the intangibles people would not have said bad things about Ryan Mallett after he left Michigan to go to Arkansas. Now the question becomes does Mallett improve his intangibless the same way Brady improved his physical tools by holding a clipboard for 2 years? I’m going to say no and you will understand why I say no.

4. Work Ethic Tom Brady has a tireless work ethic. Brady wants to play for another 10 years and you have to love that even though the reality is Tom Brady plays anothers 2 to 5 years tops. Ryan Mallett blew off two team workouts with Carolina and Tennessee by going out and partying late at night. If Mallett were in the NFL he would be violating teams curfew hours.

5. Winner Ryan Mallett didn’t win a big BCS Bowl Game in college. Tom Brady did win a BCS Bowl Game. Anyone remember the 2000 Orange Bowl where Tom Brady defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide in overtime? Plus Brady has won 3 Super Bowls and appeared in 4 Super Bowls since that timespan. Ryan Mallett scares me as a talent evaluator to the point where I would consider shaving my head off. Is Mallett really the long term answer in New England once Brady leaves? I hope the kid succeeds, proves me wrong, and the Patriots succeed for another decade, but I really have my doubts about Ryan Mallett.

Derek4

Sorry, repost. I left a part out about Long's shoulder.

-I always watch the O-line for a great block.

Last year I kept watching and watching and watching.............

This is why I can honestly tell you that McQuistan and Carey absolutely SUCK!

Yeah, Henne should have been able to carry this team into the playoffs single handedly last year.

No mention of the fact that our LG was playing Center. **Our only legitimate O-lineman had a separated shoulder** and the right side of our line wasn't playing at all.

Got cut off, mullet sucks!

Q. What does Mullett and Mallet have in common?

A. They both play QB for the NE Patsies.

(Rimshot!)

Some funny stuff tonight Odin and Aloco!

Some poignant stuff Tracy474.

Let's out aside that the staff is made up of a family of red arsed baboons and dream that they might be able to do something right with these players... I'd like to see Robert Gallery at LG. He's a FA and is really good, IMO. I don't know how Puncey will do but he's GOT to be better than Berger...

Long - Gallery - Pouncey - Incognito - Carey

When your weakest guy is Vernon Carey (or maybe Pouncey), that's close to outstanding. Not that this staff couldn't find a way to eff it up but anybody else and that would be a top four OL.

There IS a team that behaves the way a fan would do things. Spends like crazy in free agency, always looking for the big name players and coaches, constantly firing guys and changing course out of frustration and impatience. Maybe you've heard of them. They're called the Washington Redskins. Works great, doesn't it?

Odin @ 8:10 Great Post...

Brady was always a player told he wasn't good enough. All the way from High school to the proffesional ranks, Brady has had to prove himself.

Mallet on the other hand has had it easy up until now. He was always the most talented. Told he was the best. The one time he faced adversity he bailed because the "system" didn't fit. Mallet has lived a priveledged life as far as football goes. He lucked out going to New England. He deserved the Oakland Raiders.

Jimmy,

Believe it or not.

I was ALWAYS a Gallery fan.

I remember when he was coming out, I was hoping we'd get him then.

Out of all the FA's out there this year, I see Gallery as a MUST!

PS: I'll be hitting the stage shortly. Doing an impromptu(and last second)Blues Night Performance at a Back Water Bar up here tonight.

I love Thursday night Gigs. The Babes that show up on Thursday nights are usually hardcore and mean business.

Oh I forgot Ireland said we are not desperate for a qb, it is amazing how someone who studies football every day could say something like that, he is starting to remind me of that spielman dude ,okay he is not that bad ,but we are desperate for a qb I watch the dolphins and have ever since direct tv came since I live up here delaware a better qb and we are a playoff team and then you never Know!

I watch the fins every Sunday through direct tv that did not come out my last post and have ever since direct tv came out, thats IT

Armando I can honestly say that I was wrong about this Mallet kid. I was a supporter of the man and wished for his drafting. Now I see he is a pompous Jackass who doesn't understand the nature of the business I mean really dude? We are in a lockout and he is relaying his psychophantic revenge fantasies because the team had to address a more imminent need in the backfield than waste a pick on a man they (Ireland and the Scouts) knew was a problem. He is showing his true colors and Belicheat won't put up with that crap for long my friend.
