Dolphins are not interested in Plaxico Burress

Yes, I'm still on vacation. But I'm not sipping drinks garnished with little umbrellas on some island and I'm certainly not hiking any mountain. I'm home. And I'm aware.

And I'm keenly aware many of you are wondering if the Dolphins are going to show interest in wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who was released Tuesday from prison after serving 21 months for a gun crime related to his blowing a couple of holes in his leg at a nightclub in 2008.

Burress, 34 when the NFL season eventually begins, may be an interesting topic. But I am told by a reliable source the Dolphins are "absolutely not" interested in Burress.

So much for that rumor.

I happen to agree the Dolphins should have zero business interest in Burress, despite the fact he is a South Florida resident. Why?

Did I mention he'll be 34 in August?

Did I mention he just spent 21 months in jail?

Did you know he has not played NFL football since 2008?

Did you know it is now 2011?

Maybe none of that bothers you. Maybe you think Burress can be the next coming of Michael Vick. And perhaps he can weave a tale of redemption and resurrect his fading career. I hope he does.

But Michael Vick was 28 years old when he returned to the NFL, not 34. And it still took him a year to get up to speed again.

Sorry, but the odds are against Burress. And it simply doesn't make sense for Miami to take that gamble.

Burress, in his prime, was an imposing 6-foot-5 target who combined that great size with very good speed and an increasing experience of defenses that made him very dangerous. But even in 2008, following his grand 2007 performance that helped the Giants win the Super Bowl, Burress was a troubled dude.

He was missing practices and was late to team meetings and was something of an enigma in the Giants locker room. He was also apparently in decline. After catching 70 passes for 1,025 yards in 2007, Burress had only 35 catches in 10 games in 2008. His average per catch was the lowest since his rookie year and the lowest in what was a steady four-year decline from 19.9 in 2004 to 16.0 in 2005 to 15.7 in 2006 to 14.6 in 2007 to 13.0 in 2008.

And you expect it will go up after not playing since the winter of 2008 and spending 21 months in jail?

Here's another thought for you to consider:

If the Dolphins decide they want a receiver to help Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess and the rest of the receiver corps in 2011, they aren't going to chase a 34-year-old guy. They're going to chase someone in his prime.

Did you know Santonio Holmes is a free agent? He's 27 years old. And fast. And hasn't been in jail the past two years. He played football last year ... and the year before. And putting him out there with Brandon Marshall would turn just about any QB into a playmaker. And it would be a blow to the Jets to lose him.

Did you know Braylon Edwards is a free agent? He's 28 years old. And his yards per reception number last year was 17.1. He also was a Michigan teammate of Chad Henne's and the two had good chemistry together. And yes, he drops passes, but he caught 53 last year for 904 yards and seven touchdowns.

And seven TDs is only one fewer than Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess had combined in 2010.

I am not saying the Dolphins will be interested in either Edwards or Holmes. But I am using them to illustrate the point that if Miami were to dip into the free agent WR market, there would be several players that make much more sense than Plaxico Burress.

Think on that.

So back to vacation I go. Please follow me on twitter as I am on there regularly and you can interact with me while I'm on this great vacation I'm on -- thinking about football.

Hey yall,

I'm back from getting branded. Never had that done before. Now it says "Prime Beef" on my rear end.

Valhalla !!!

Im so sick of ahtletes being elevated to god-like staus simply because of playing with brief illness. Should one who is paid to keep his body in supremely top condition be able to play thru brief illnes?

Sorry Im not impressed. For us mere mortals who are not handsomely paid to keep our bodies in top performance condition this would be impossible. These athletes in peek physical performance condition should be able to pull off the feat. It may still be a little difficult for them but isnt that the reason these guys get paid millions to be in premium shape?

Next time I hear of an athlete being raised to god-like status for something they are handsomely paid to do, I'll puke all over myself. Havent many of us gone to work and still performed the duties expected of us despite a breif and difficult illness?

Did anyone raise us to god-like status because of it? Dont feed into the hype people. We would all do the exact same if we were finely tuned athletes and probably have equal or slightly better success.

ALoco,

Idiot I didnt say anything bad about your mother. Im very sure she would tell you she's very remorseful for bringing a total clueless neanderthal like you into this world too.

SON OF BIT CH DB ,

DID YOU EVER GO TO SCHOOL TO SHARP YOU ENGLISH LANGUAGE ?

..From the point of a nuetral. The Heat should by all right swept this series. Dallas has to have everything clicking, and have Miami crumble to win games. The effort it takes for Dallas to get baskets is twice what the Heat expend....Defensively. What LeBroan did against Derrick Rose was nothing short of amazing. Jason Terry on the other hand is a jump shooter. People talk about James expending do much energy defensively..This is true. but he can coast on offense right now because Wade is the Hot hand. There isn't a team in the NBA that has this luxury of 2 world class scorers, and a third guy that is a perrenial all-star. So who cares if Lebron is buying his time.

Remember there is still at least 2 probably 3 games left in this series. Lets see what happens in these games before labeling James something that he is not. The only thing that matters to these guys is taking the cup. I'm sure if you asked Lebron if he went scoreless, and Wade averaged 50 points a game if they won the title would it matter?

ONE REASON LEBRON CAME TO MIAMI ,IT'S FAN BASE ARE IDIOTS LIKE DB . THE CAN CALL EVERY PLAYER GREAT EVEN WITHOUT ANY MERIT ........

WELCOME TO FLORIDA .

Darryl

Dallas has yet to play their top game. Credit the Miami D somewhat. But be careful if the Dallas shooting wakes up. This series is up for grabs. I think to this point Carlisle is outcoaching Spoelstra.

I AM GOING TO BE A GREAT COACH LIKE MY DAD!

rgb...I would agree that Spoelstra looks a little lost in the 4th quarter of these games, at least offensivley. The defense is great, Spoe is definitley a deciphal of the Pat Riley school of Basketball...Defense first.

Dallas missed a ton of open shots last night, uncontested shots. What puzzles me. Is why haven't they forced Dirk into shooting jump shots at the end of games. The 2 games where Dirk has made mincemeat of the defense and got easy layups the Heat have lost..When pressured into a 20 footer...Brick city. They should pick him up at the top of the key every time to that at least if Dirk gets by the first guy the defense can rotate, and have a chance. Or stop him and make him put up a lower percentage shot

They say playing defense takes more energy than offense. More energy to react than to act. Could be the whole team is wearing down by the end of the game because they are spending so much energy on the defensive side. Maybe the answer is to rotate more players more frequently.

TP never lived up to the hype in college. He lies and cheats and does not have the respect of his team. He is not a good fit for Miami he will be in jail and not on thne field you can bet on it

wont be on any field cause there isnt a season. we need another solid draft before the 2012 season starts

will be hosting some poke arounds on sundays to make up for no games. maybe show some old games.

Pre-madonna? WTF? Bawahahahah! Hey dude, the term is 'Prima Donna'. It means you're a pretty good ballerina, not the state of pop music before 'Like a Virgin', lol. When in doubt ASK somebody or even, I don't know, try spell-check, maybe. If you don't know how, there's always Google. But I digress.

Go for Holmes, if anybody. He'd make a good tandem with Marshall, but frankly I think there are other positions that need attention more than WR.

fins have a lot of needs but I don't think receiver is one. They needed speed at that position but the filled that whole when they drafted Edmund Gates who was one of, if not the fastest receiver in the draft.

with no time to practice a new offense, whole new offensive coaching staff, the short offseason will hurt the fins far more than the jets/pats with already well established systems and superior coaches.

OHIODPHIN4LIFE:

I'M GLAD YOU LIKE THAT ONE. I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY.

Maybe the fishies will find themselves a 4th quarter choke artist along the lines of LeQuitter. Enjoy another south florida meltdown over the next week and then you can all set your sights on the true losers of Miami, the Dolphins.

DYINGBREED:

AS I SAID AND I WOULD STAND BEHINDE IT.

YOU CAN'T TEACH 6'6.

HE USE TO RUN WELL AFTER THE CATCH AND HARTLINE AND BESS DON'T.

AGAIN NO DRAFT PICKS AND NO HE'S NOT A LONG TERM ANSWER BUT HOW MANY TEAMS CAN COVER TWO WIDEOUTS THAT'S 6'4 AND BETTER.

NOT ONLY THAT BUT MAYBE HE CAN BRING A MESSAGE TO KEEP MARSHALL IN ORDER.

AGAIN NOT SAYING HE WILL BUT MAYBE.

Those of you who say no to Plaxico Buress:

Your assessment is accurate and your judgment is sound.
We can do better that a 34 year old ex-con whose better days are long gone.

PATRICK TURNER IS 6'5. COULDN'T MAKE IT AS STARTER ON THE FINS OR JETS. HEIGHT IS NOT THE ANSWER. HARTLINE, A TRACK STAR IS TODAY A FAR BETTER RUNNER AFTER THE CATCH THAN PLAX IF THE QB LEADS HIM AND NOT UNDERTHROWS TO THE WRONG SHOULDER. 3 YEARS REMOVED FROM FOOTBALL AND AT 34 PLAX WILL NEVER GET BACK TO WHERE HE WAS. HE WAS ALREADY IN DECLINE BEFORE HE SHOT HIMSELF IN THE FOOT. WHY DON'T YOU READ ARMANDOS ARTICLE SIX MORE TIMES SO MAYBE HALF WILL SINK IN.

Winner of Thursday nights game takes the series. I bet they feed James often and early to turn him loose.

The great error the Heat are mak9ing now is not making up thier mind on what they need Lebron to be. He cant be everything and play nearly 45 minutes per game.

Give the point guard and facilitator duties exclusively to Chalmers. Plus Jason Kidd does not have the quickness to consistently stay in front of Chalmers defensively. Also bench Bibby and bring in James Jones for 3pt shot production. Lebron can run point and facilitate the offense to spell Chalmers.

Hartline, Moore & Wallace are a JOKE compared to Plaxico. I never seen them take over a game yet. And Silly fans think we are Dynamic. How do u know he's washed up after resting his body? Ricky did it! No wonder we suck, our fans Swear we are this and that, but we keep losing. Shameful..

Then let Lebron be what he was brought to Miami to do. Become an offensive superstar. Using Lebron primarily as a facilator equals the Dolphins using Brandon Marshall as a decoy. A huge waste of superior talent.

I blame the way Spoelstra is using Lebron more than falsely accepting he's a shrinking violet. There isnt a nba team in this league that can handle both Wade and James in all out attack mode. Eric Spoelstra wake up before its too late. I greatly compare the way Lebron's being used to the subterranium way the 2010 Dolphins used Brandon Marshall.

It stinks to high heaven!

The Heat need remember Lebron is a "FORWARD" with point guard-like ability. He is not a point guard. Wake up Miami Heat, Lebron isnt the 2nd coming of Magic Johnson.

JB

Nor will you ever see Plaxico take over another game. He is spent. The joke is our QB. With a real QB, Marshall Bess Harline Gates will be much better than a broken down aging Plaxico 3 years removed from contact other than bending over in prison.

The real chess match in this series has been Carlisle versus Spoelstra. Give Carlisle the edge so far in making adjustments.

One of the primary scoring problems Lebron is having playing point guard/forward position is that the position is played primarily at a stand still and facing the basket.

Magic Johnson was similar in in height, a little smaller in girth, and predominantly played the position his entire lifelong basketball career. Magic also had a very good post up game, playing very well with his back to the basket. Lebron James does not. James has not refined his post up back to basket game.

Lebron would be much more effective offensively playing point if he had an efficient post up game. He's more fast than quick, so playing from the nearly standstill position he doesnt really have the great quickness to blow by anyone not having a head of steam built up first.

Lebron will not totally dominate playing point until he first develops a very effective back to the basket post up game. Dont see why the Heat and Eric Spoelstra havent figured this out yet. Even a simple dummy like me has.

DB SHOULD GO TO SLEEP AND LET THE BLOGGERS COME AND POST THEIR OWN THOUGHTS .

Telltale sign. Everytime they show Riley in the crowd he looks worried. Very worried. Almost like he knows whats coming and doesn't like it.

I'm not giving up on Spoelstra yet. If anything the players will help him figure it out. But they can't take Dallas lightly, they are a serious team, resilient and tough to beat.

rgb,

Carlisle hasnt outcoached Spoelstra. This difference is Spoelstra hasnt adequately figured out how best to use Lebron.

He needs to let Chalmers handle the point guard duties exclusively and bench Bibby for James Jones off the bench. Jones couldnt do any worse than Bibby shooting 3's. Bibby is nearly useless at point right now even coming in off the bench.

Lebron needs to be used more slashing to basket, lob dunk passes, and passing to him when he's on the move so that his height, size and speed becomes more of a problem for defenders. When all of these things come into effect then his ability to create on his own will make him nearly unstoppable on offense. Plus cut his minutes down to 40 max per game.

DyingBreed

Seems to me Carlisle figured out how to handle the Heats pick and rolls, figured out how to stifle the Miami offense late in games.

Those things you mention are indeed poor coaching decisions, so therefore if Spoelstra is making poorer coaching decisions than Carlisle, that too is being out coached. What you are saying is Carlisle knows how to use his players better than Spoelstra. I'll bet if the two coaches switched sides the Heat would have won in 4.

Defensively the Heat are doing something no other teams were able to do to Dallas. Consistently hold them under 90pts a game. The Heat's problem is creating offense for themselves. If Lebron were correctly used, the Heat would be averaging at least 90ppg meaning this series would have ended Tuesday night.

I think the Mavs have yet to score 90pts in a single game this series. The Heat troubles are on the offensive end and misuse of James. Moreso stopping themselves than the Mavs are playing stifling defense.

rgb,

My perspective of one coach outcoaching another is when one coach is making great decision but the other coach is just making an even better decision.

The Heat are moreso stumbling over themselves offensively than the Mavs are making superior moves. The huge misuse of Lebron is playing a great factor in this.

Spo is clearly emphasizing defense at the expense of weakening his offense. Whats happening is Dallas is becoming less fearful of Miami scoring too much. Spo needs to turn up the fire and let Lebron loose like a madman Thursday night, put some fear back into Dallas.

Actually I think they should just tune the offense to Wade. He is the scariest player on the court if you ask me. There is no defense for him. I think it was Mark Jackson announcing the game the other night that said he thinks Wade is the #3 shooting guard all time behind Jordon and Kobe.

Mario Chalmers is the only real point guard on this team, not Lebron. Spoelstra just needs to grow some balls and trust the kid for the good or bad of it. Lebron may outrun Chalmers in a long foot race. But clearly Chalmers has superior quickness to drive by an opponent. Plus can get thru small spaces the big bodied Lebron can not.

If Chalmers used his quickness to get into the lane he could dish off to a cutting slicing Lebron, who would be very difficult to stop once he's built up a head of steam going to the basket. He'll either convert for easy layups and dunks or go to the foul line.

Now thats the part of Lebron's game the heat are now missing by bottling him up thremselves by exclusively having him plat point and facilator of the offense. The Heat are cutting thier own throats by doing this and making Lebron look terrible in the process.

Well, if you made Wade the facilitator you could potentially run into the same problem yopu have with James as facilitator of the offense. James and Wade are not guys you want to be get everyone else involved first guys. Thier true natures are attackers on offense, not facilitators.

Making either facilitators invites passiveness on offense. Both should be used as attack first pass 2nd offensive aggressors. Thier first natures should always be to attack on offense then kick out when being doubled or tripled defensively. That's the purpose of having 3pt shooters on the floor with the big 3.

I would think by now Lebron and Spo have talked about what Lebron needs to get going. There are countless articles on SI and ESPN questioning Lebron right now. I would think that should be enough to light his fire. I am expecting a dominating bounce back game from Lebron tomorrow night.

GO ........BRUNIS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

BRUNIS IS THE GREAT BOS TON TEAM,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Also a telltale sign Lebron isnt a great point guard facilitator is if you noticed. Lebron will at times throw the ball to a guy like Joel Anthony with 5-6 secs left on the 24 second clock. Anthony has absolutely no business recieving a pass with 5-6 seconds left on the play clock.

A seasoned and well experienced point guard would never do this. In that situation James is better off heaving the ball up at the basket himself. A smart point guard will only pass to a player that has ability to create his own shot when the shot clock is under 10 seconds.

Ive seen Lebron pass to the wrong player several times with the shot clock under 10 seconds. This indicates he isnt a true experience point player to exclusively facilitate your offense. I just cant believe Spoelstra hasnt noticed it too. Lebron is a great passer but that doesnt neccessarily make you a great offensive facilitator.

I wish to discuss pancakes and Norway.

DR,

DB IS TALKING TO HIMSELF , DON;T INTERUPT .

rgb,

Lebron's a great passer, he isnt a great facilitator. Magic Johnson was a great passer and facilatator of the Lakers offense. Lebron does not fully understand every moment of the game nearly as well as Magic.

Too many misunderstand James passing ability for being a point guard /forward. That isnt James' fault. In this aspect too many are expecting him to be something he is clearly not.

Sure he can facilitate an offense in a limited role. But he is not experienced and wiley enough at the position to exclusively run your offense thru him in that manner. I see it broad as daylight and cannot fully understand why others cannot either.

I suggest "EVERYONE" begin paying closer attention to how many mistakes Lebron makes when predominantly playing. Especially those who have played point guard position before. Also pay close attention to who Lebron passes to when the shot clock is under 10 secs. Too often Ive seen him pass it to guys that cant created thier own shot and are covered when he passes it to them.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was one of the greatest passing big men in nba history. Still it wouldnt have been wise to try and facilitate your entire offense thru him.

I guarrantee if the Heat stop making Lebron a pass first, attack second offensive facilitator he'll score more and the Heat will crack the 100pt barrier for the 1st time this championship series.

The Heat problem hasnt been great Mavs defense, it's been thier own stagnant offense not being able to score enough points to secure wins in thier two losses. The offense needs to be facilitated primarily through Chalmers. The only true point guard on thoier entire roster.

CHEIF BREED NOW POSTING FORE A WROLD RECOD 96 HUORS,INCREDABLE HOW A DUNCE CAN POST NOTHING WORTH READING FOR 96 HUORS.

Justin..

I agree that no one was scared of Manning or Brady their first year as a starter. Maybe I need to give Henne a chance, But when I see better qb's on the market 2011...I think we need to atleast bring them in...There's nothing like having a star qb come in and have them battle for position.. MIA ALL THE WAY..............Alteriek Whitten

Wow! Did you see that?!?

The heat are lucky to be 2-2 as the Chalmers 3 at half time game 3 definitely should not have counted. Chalmers foot was clearly on the line an obvious back court violation.

Amazing the Heat get that call or non call in Dallas. The refs could have reviewed and taken away that 3 at any point during the half time yet didn't. That kind of no call on the road is almost unheard of.

The heat easily could be down 1-3 right now and frankly ought to be.

You all like to carry on like Dallas is nothing. Those who do could not be more wrong.

The Dallas D has been improving with each game.
The 7 game series is about adjustments and team D. I dont know how many more adjustments the Heat have left.

Dallas is a deeper team. Marion is an excellent defender on James. It matters and James is playing a ton of minutes and looks tired.

The Heat do not have an answer for Chandler. When Wade is having to block shots on Chandler on multiple possessions that spells trouble. It looks like the Mavs are starting to figure out the Heat D as well.

Of course an 'answer' simply does not exist for Dirk and everyone underestimates Kidd.

I would not be at all surprised to see a Mavs blowout game 5.

GO MAVS SEND THE HEAT HOME LOSERS.
