DeAngelo Williams returns to Carolina :(

The Carolina Panthers will announce in the next 24 hours that they have retained running back DeAngelo Williams.

Why am I reporting this?

You have to ask?

The Dolphins were interested in Williams and were one of three teams that made offers to perhaps the best running back available in free agency.

The offer was considered no more than a flirtation by Williams, however, once it became clear the steep price it would take to pry him loose from the Panthers or keep him from going to Denver. ESPN.com is reporting Williams has agreed to a 5-year, $43 million contract that includes a whopping $21 million in guaranteed money.

The Dolphins were shopping for a running back and continue that search. But they were looking around at Sears and Williams was hanging out at Sak's.

So what does this mean?

Miami still needs a running back to pair with rookie Daniel Thomas. Ahmad Bradshaw is still a possibility, although the Giants are considered the heavy favorites to retain him. He could be considered the next-best available runner. He also would not come cheaply as it would require outbidding New York.

The Dolphins have talked to agent Drew Rosenhaus about Bradshaw and Rosenhaus has given the team the appropriate parameters for making that work.

Then we head to the clearance aisle. Miami can still go back to Ronnie Brown, who is offering himself to the highest bidder. Miami can look at Cedric Benson, assuming he's not in jail today. Miami can go very cheap for Atlanta's Jason Snelling.

I suppose there's also Ricky Williams.

The pray-for-it-to-happen solution is that Reggie Bush gets cut by the Saints because he has a cap value north of $11 million. Then Miami swoops in and add him for the sake of giving him the football 15 times a game or so.

Don't bank on that working out perfectly.

Other running backs that are available include Willis McGahee, Joseph Addai, Marion Barber, Carnell Williams, Darren Sproles, or ...

Hello Mr. ALoco, didn't really think we would even have a Season this year, sorta surprised we are back talking football

Ricky Williams is the RB to sign...The stats are there and he's still in good shape.

Well, looks like we're trying hard to get Orten, but the deal may not go through (think $). Thursday at 4pm (EST), teams release their players so we may wait to see who's available and work our deals then. Sparano is drooling over Marion Barber, so expect him in a Dolphins uniform. They really need to go after someone to pair with fasano; Zack Miller, who may be the best available TE in free agency. Then, it'll be whomever they can get at QB; maybe V. Young or Bulger. That's what it's looking like right now. But, we may slip up on both of them too. It wouldn't surprise me if our veteran QB is even further down the list of FA's.. )

Also, before we run Henne out of town, (which, by the way, I'd be in favor of if he flops this year), remember, patience is a virtue. In 2008, this was a 1 win team devoid of any talent. 2009 was fun, but lets be honest, that was fools gold. The stars lined up, from Brady being out for the year, to the easy schedule, and alot of bounces going our way.

In the 2 years since, Miami has added a lot of talent. Vets in their prime like Marshall and Dansby. Plus a good young core of Long, V. Davis, Wake, Bess, Solai, Smith, ect. And hopefully we get a couple more keepers from this years draft.

Bottom line: its a long way back from 1-15. A good job has been done in 3 years transforming this team. None of those young guys didnt have growing pains (except Long). Theres a decent chance Henne puts it together this year and this team starts to take off. Give him a chance, otherwise we're gonna be back at square one in another couple years.

I said since the draft....they they should make a strong play for the QB this FO WANTED.....and then stand behind him....

If Orton is that QB that they covet....then I appauld Ireland and Sporano for getting WHO THEY WANT.....

Unless Henne is the starter and has an absolutely jaw dropping season. We're not making the playoffs no matter which qb we bring in. So we may as well go cheap with VY or even Bulger.

This fo doesnt realize there isnt that magic qb available out there to magically save thier jobs. Our best recourse whether its this regime or a new one is actually using a #1 pick on a qb.

We havent used a #1 pick on a qb since 1983, selecting Dan Marino. Yet the ancient chinese secret in Miami is why the held havent we gotten a real qb since Marino left in 1999.

No matter the regime around here, they seem to wanna go every route imaginable except using a #1 draft pick on a qb.

If Orton becomes our starter and we have a 8-8 season. He and this entire regime will be run out of Miami. May have been a long time since this team did something consistently meaningful. But perrenial .500 football will not be tolerated in by true dolfans either.

fins have zero interest in ricky coming back. hope they dont either for brown

DB: Hypothetical: What if Henne plays season, he goes for 3,800 yds, 25 TD's and 12 picks. Miami wins 10 games and gets a wild card. Thats not jaw dropping, but would be a nice improvement. Would you still wanna use a #1 on a QB next year.

Which, if Henne has a bad year, I'm all for. There is a really good bunch of QB's coming out next year, which was half the reason I was opposed to using a #1 on a QB this year. Not to mention this years group was crap.

I live in sd and I have watched a lot of charger games.sproles is everybit as good as bush.and he would be a lot cheaper.with orton hopefuly joining us we should be a passing team.hopefully our 2nd and 3rd rounder steps up and contribute. We will go 10 and 6

If that scenario happens it creates a huge problem. We'll have a $7 million backup qb that also may have cost multiple draft picks sitting on the bench. Then we'll have an unsigned Henne that we'll have to use the franchise tag on and over pay for one season(2012). Even though he had a an above average season that will be getting franchise qb money, at least for 1 season(2012).

Then we still have to make a decision whether to spend a #1 draft pick on a qb because Henne will still be an unrestricted fa in 2013. After his big pay day franchise tag season. Its actually going to create more problems than it solves.

The best way for the fo to head this off is to give Henne at least a 2yr extension right now.

we arent a passing team either way, our oline isnt good enough. henne is complete garbage and will never start another game here

Give Henne a 2yr extension at about $4 million a yr right now. So if he wins the starter competition and has a slightly above average season. We dont have to franchise him to begin 2012.

Franchising him will probably cost about $15 million for one season. Soliai's play was "slightly" above average in 2010, but the penalty for not giving him an extension earlier has placed us in the position of franchising and paying him like a top 3 NT.

Soliai isnt yet a top 3 NT and if Henne has a slightly above average 2012 he isnt worth being paid franchise qb money for one season.

DB....funny post...the part about (consitently).....

Not so funny when you implied I may not be a "tue" FIN FAN....but I that beside the point....

The biggest point of your post you may not even realize.....
If Orton becomes our starter and we have a 8-8 season. He and this entire regime will be run out of Miami.

Posted by: DyingBreed | July 27, 2011 at 11:15 PM

The threat of instability due to a lack luster season....may be very be whats keeping FA away....and it is entirely possible...that the Orton camp doesn't want to be without a job....should Ireland and Sporano be fired.....

dusty bottom,

Before 2010 many fans were saying Soliai was complete garbage and would never be a starting NT in Miami. Thats exactly why he's now franchised and will be grossly overpaid for a single season.

Remember, Soliai will still be a unrestricted fa in 2012. I highly doubt his agent will suggest he signs an extension and will advise him to test free agency waters. We may lose Solia in 2012, be prepared for it.

Not bad for a guy just like Henne, fans thought, in your words " is complete garbage". The possibility exists Henne could become our next Soliai situatuion in as little as one season.

Jeff Ireland is starting to do the same thing from last year waiting see what bargain players he can sign, not thinking to get the best available player for your needs, not a good to serviceable backup player, or is it that the good players to want to deal with Jeff or Tony, these guys have a bad attitude and players are spoiled and know they can go elsewhere and get payed, not getting insulted
And asked question that are inappropriate and unprofessional!! If you guys think that doesn't play a role on some players especially the great ones that can make their money elsewhere, than your kidding your self!

If Orton....or VY is signed.....Henne gets his walking papers....

The only deal for Henne will be made at much less than 4 million per year...

might want to drop that figure to ....

2 years...800K to 1 million....

However....if we don't sign either...AND....Henne plays well....Henne could very well break the bank...

Kris, Henne isn't going anywhere. If any other qb is brought in, he or Henne will be the number two. Devlin, at this moment, doesn't count as a viable option so there is really only one qb on the roster

henne is complete garbage. im not sure if u are on drugs or a family member of henne. but hes done here. hes a backup now. nfl network even had miami trying to get a 5th rd pick for him but course no takers. so henne will be a backup and gone after contract up, which we all should be glad about.

I believe what mainly scares the really good fa's away from here is its widely known this regime choose safe over championships.

We will never compete with the Jets, Pats, Ravens, and Steelers for Playoff berths. They all have better teams, coaches, and qb's than we do. Yes Im implying Sanchez his better than what we have. He's quarterbacked to afc championship teams now. That experience speaks for itself.

For at least the next 2-3yrs the 2 wildcard playoff teams will come out of the afc east(Jets/Pats) and afc north(Ravens/Steelers). I dont see us beating any of these teams out for a wildcard berth for at least the next two seasons. Especially in our play it safe ways.

DB....for the record...I agree about Sanchez.....each game in the playoffs puts him futher and futher ahead of Henne in terms of experince...and since has played well in win or go home games....a regular season game...for Sanchez...I would assume is a lot less pressure filled than for someone with ZERO play-off snaps....

But I still think.....they main reaosn fo FA to stay away is the unstability of this coaching staff....Ireland is probaly safe regardless of what happens...

minus a 3 win season or something like that

DB, if we sign Orton we will be going to the playoffs..... nuff said!

Orton WILL be signed and WILL be our starter! Why wud FO sign him and sit him?>> Makes no sense at all

next 2 seasons, lol u cant predict the nfl, its impossible. texans could become a powerhouse. orton himself wont put us near the playoffs, think back and remember how bad this team was last year. need a rb and te badly. another guard, corner, pass rusher,

DB disagree....

Miami can beat the jets....we have done it 4 out of the last 6 meetings.....

No reason why we shoudn't be clawing it out with them in the final weeks....

Even last season.....after beating the jets (i believe) to get our 7th win...we were in the driver's seat for the 6th WC spot.....

Problem is...we imploded...and the never lost another game....(i think)

This means both Flacco and sanchez are ahead of Henne in terms of playoff experience and seasoning.

Then There are the vets Roeslisberger and Brady whom Henne cant hold a candle to.

Now, knowing that for the next 2-3 season the 2 afc wildcard teams will come from the afc north(Berger/Flacco) and afc east(Brady/Sanchez). What Dolphan in thier right mind actually believes we'll be in the playoffs anytime within the next two seasons unless "drastic" changes are made.

Ireland hasnt a clue as to who are the main teams keeping him out of the playoffs completely. We need a gm that really has a clue. Those other 4 gm's are playing for playoffs and championships while Irelands only playing to keep it safe.

I really hope they do get Orten. He would be a better competition for Henne. And, if by some miracle, he doesn't beat Henne out in camp, I'd much rather see him holding the clipboard on the sideline than Vince Young. Young is more athletic than Orten or Henne, but I just don't see him having the football knowledge to help this team. He relies more on his natural abilities, in my opinion.
Orten would make better use of the weapons available to him; including B. Marshall. But, we really need to sign a pass catching Tight End (Zack Miller) and that would open up this Offence more than anything no matter who is at QB. And, he could push Fasano and make him better too!

what a beautiful fan base. Henne gets knocked around all last year gets up and plays for u clowns.. no of line no run game.Oh except for the wild cat which Henne was forced into 3rd and long and was one the best Qb,s in the league. orton dosen.t even have the same stats why would we even go after him. Henne should have more respect...He played 5 games injured for us..

Its not just about beating the Jets. Its about beating out the Jets. Then Ravens, Steelers and Pats. Guaranteed one of those 4 teams will be standing in the way of each other to represent the afc again in this year's SB.

The only other team that could possibly show up in that mix is the Colts and Manning.

As fans we're so thrilled to get a regular season victory or two over the Jets. We're more concerned with beating than beating out for a playoff berth. What I would like to do is both beat them and beat them. The latter we have failed to do for two consecutive seasons.

why still the talk on henne, he is finished as a starter, good riddens

dusty bottoms ever play football?

Star Tracker...

Then come back and BASH the fan base....

well Kris if u know so much examine the stats. done

what an idiotic argument Star Tracker.....

Yes...be DONE....because you are to simple to deal with SIMPLE FACTS....

GO..BE DONE...and cry me a river.....

In 2010, at least 5 afc teams primary focus to begin the offseason was to make the playoffs and get to the big dance. Our primary focus was to "feed the wolf".

Who the hell are we, "the 3 little pigs"? We need championship focus not nursery gimmicks here.

I don't have to know Jack about football...

ITS THE FO....you know...the people who get PAID to MANAGE FOOTBALL.....

WHO ARE TRYING TO SIGN HENNE's replacement.....

Jeff better do what he has to or we lose again!!!

kris .. ever been a pro athlete.. support is really important.. I have been and I am Not simple. I am a PHD and just stating what I feel and no refection on u in a way u took offense to.

Because of the play it safe philosophy since this regime has been in power. We're at least 2 seasons behind any of the 4 afc teams we're in direct competition with for a playoff berth.

Lets not even begin to talk about our chances to win the division. We're talking needing to makeup 2yrs of ground just to become a wildcard team.

We need players that can quickly close that gap. Not "safe" players.

As we continue to bring in "safe" players. The gap between us and the true playoff teams will only slowly continue to widen.

Some of the comments that I've read on this blog seem a little ignorant of the game of football, in my opinion.

1) Pass-blocking and Run-blocking are not the same thing! An O-line is usually built for one or the other. Remember when Smiley and Grove left? Our running game suffered. Why? Because we didn't have anyone who could pull and run-block in space effectively with one exception; Jake Long. If you'd have paid attention last year, he would pull from his Left Tackle position all the way to the right in order to block for the run. But, he couldn't do that on every running play! The new kid, Pouncey, may solve that problem.

2) If you get rid of Henne once Orten is signed and then Orten goes down, who's gonna throw the ball? You've got to have 2 good QB's in the NFL, just like you need 2 good Running backs. It's hard for either QB or RB to go through an entire season without injury.

3) The Dolphins only have so much money that they're willing to part with for Free Agency. Otherwise, you have to release good players for cap room! Some of the suggestions on this blog are pipe-dreams! They aren't playing fantasy football here. This is the real deal. So, if you spent $100 million on 2 free-agents, you'd only have $20 million left for the rest of the team!

4) Please, if you're not grounded in reality, seek professional psychological help! You'll be glad that you did. (And, we will be too).

As we're cureently constructed I dont see not one playoff calibre afc team I feel confident we could beat with all of the marbles on line. Even if miraculously we did make the playoffs.

4yrs of tinkering with this regime and we're still not even a legit wildcard playoff team. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

tracy well said

spot off a bunch of garbabe that is unverifiable....

ALoco Character...

Ever been an Astronaut...I have...

This game is fun,,,do another one ALOCO CHARACTER...

We're not making the playoffs this year. Nor the year after and year after with this play it safe regime.

So at seasons end Ross should end this farce by dumping the entire regime and hiring someone like Cowher to run everything. At least coming from Steeler pedigree Cowher more likely understands what our target needs to be to return to the playoff.

Clearly after 4 seasons the present regime still clearly does not. After 4 seasons we're still at least 2 seasons away from being a legit wildcard playoff team. That's only if we lose no more ground on the leaders.

some dude who played "PRO SPORTS"...and now has a "PHD"....

Has shown up in the midnight hour to bless us with his/her useless post....

Gimme a break......

I think my point is made.....i'n done with that....

I am not this ALoco person and was just being honest with you.. Again sorry u took offense.

Did Armando go back on vacation or what?

The only good this regime has done is brought i a few nice nucleus pieces. But I fear it will take a guy with "a real" clue to take it to the next level.

If Ireland?Sparano arent soon dumped. The nice pieces they have brought in will go to huge waste.

kris it is not 12 in southern calif. I played pro tennis and did earn PHD. I am not a medical doctor, but an educator. been a fin fan for years and was just concerned how some of the fan base seems negative to young players. Again nothing about u and sorry u took offense

At 80yrs old Shula could probably comeback and do better than these clowns!!!!!

What EXACTLY is your problem? It looks like the team is going to trade for Orton rather than add Young in Fa and you can't deal with it. You're kidding me!! You're coming across as a sucky baby!! Seriously bud....because your not getting the guy you want you have to stomp and pull a temper tantrum. Get a grip!!

Don't give me this 'they're playing it safe approach'. That's not accurate....they are actually going out and making something happen, rather than sitting back and waiting for Young to come available. There's nothing safe about a guy who threw 20TDs and 9INTs and through for 3600 yards in only thirteen games. If that's SAFE, I'll take that from my QB every year.

Seriously bud...figurre out another way to blow off some steam and let's embrace this. They are making an effort to get better and I applaud them for the move.

OK...I'm hitting the hay....feel free to blast me while I'm gone...'night!

Just because you want to embrace this doesnt mean I should follow suit. Only thing we've embraced with this regime is borderline mediocrity at best. To some of us loyal fans that is unacceptable.

4yrs in and still not a legit wildcard playoff team. If you feel good about embracing that, then good for you my friend.
