DeAngelo Williams returns to Carolina :(

The Carolina Panthers will announce in the next 24 hours that they have retained running back DeAngelo Williams.

Why am I reporting this?

You have to ask?

The Dolphins were interested in Williams and were one of three teams that made offers to perhaps the best running back available in free agency.

The offer was considered no more than a flirtation by Williams, however, once it became clear the steep price it would take to pry him loose from the Panthers or keep him from going to Denver. ESPN.com is reporting Williams has agreed to a 5-year, $43 million contract that includes a whopping $21 million in guaranteed money.

The Dolphins were shopping for a running back and continue that search. But they were looking around at Sears and Williams was hanging out at Sak's.

So what does this mean?

Miami still needs a running back to pair with rookie Daniel Thomas. Ahmad Bradshaw is still a possibility, although the Giants are considered the heavy favorites to retain him. He could be considered the next-best available runner. He also would not come cheaply as it would require outbidding New York.

The Dolphins have talked to agent Drew Rosenhaus about Bradshaw and Rosenhaus has given the team the appropriate parameters for making that work.

Then we head to the clearance aisle. Miami can still go back to Ronnie Brown, who is offering himself to the highest bidder. Miami can look at Cedric Benson, assuming he's not in jail today. Miami can go very cheap for Atlanta's Jason Snelling.

I suppose there's also Ricky Williams.

The pray-for-it-to-happen solution is that Reggie Bush gets cut by the Saints because he has a cap value north of $11 million. Then Miami swoops in and add him for the sake of giving him the football 15 times a game or so.

Don't bank on that working out perfectly.

Other running backs that are available include Willis McGahee, Joseph Addai, Marion Barber, Carnell Williams, Darren Sproles, or ...

Nevermind.

bush isnt a kick returner. hes a punt returner

We could have saved at least $2 million against the salary cap by going after VY and he wouldnt cost draft picks to boot.

Orton probably costs 2 draft picks(according to Clayton a 2nd and 3rd), so when including the at least $2 million more he costs. With VY, we could add at least 3 more players to our roster over the 2011 and 2012 season.

Remember, the two draft picks Clayton reportedly says Elway is asking means 2 very good players we wont be able to add to our roster via the 2012 draft. Is Orton really worth all of this and $7 million a season"

You my dolfan bretheran be that judge of this for yourselves.

I keep hearing orton is average, below average, garbage, no talent, a quitter......the man is a beast......3653 yds 20 td 9 int before he got injured and the new coach threw in tebow to sell some tickets cause their season was over......cmon guys orton is a franchise qb.......watch when we make the playoffs we will all be riding ortons jock

no dying he isnt. bulger is the answer, then draft a qb

You get what you pay for DDO......And miami looks to go the cheap route.....this isnt the year miami is going to turn the block in the afc east.....we just dont have players available to add the pieces to this team to make a run!!!!AT least not yet!!!!

Not Bush, he's only good for two games a season, unless you rush him under 10 times a game.

ortons decent, nowhere near a franchise qb. franchise qbs dont play for a third team only a few years into career

I'm thinking Brown will be back.

any non bias fan knows this team isnt winning this year. so dont throw away draft picks. and please dont bring back brown

Orton is so good Elway prefers Tebow and Brady Quinn. Orton will last 2 years here max and be off to the next team thinking he is more than he is. Chicago, Denver, Miami...next...

We have plenty of players superphin are you kidding me......our defense second year under nolan will be lights out, orton to marshall will be huge, good for 1200 yds and 13 td, bess will explode again Roberto wallace will shine with a real qb, our line will be great with one more addition, and with the platoon of rb we already got plus one more if we add one will be fine as long as the pass offense is up to par.......cmon give us some credit we are right where we want to be

DB I doubt Orton will be guranteed anything more than 9 million he'll make next year. If henne wins the job they'll just trade or release orton next year and sign henne to long term. This is not a big deal

Exactly Dusty.....not saying were in the rebuilding mode like denver is but lets face it...The lockout effected us more than most teams in terms of making better personal decisions....and as much as i love brown....it is time to move on!!!!

ORTON IS A FIN...CONSIDER IT DONE ....THE MONEY TALKS ARE OVER AND ORTON WILL UNITE WITH MARSHALL SOON ,,,,,,,,,,, ONE MORE REASON TO SIGN HIM ,TO GET MARSHALL GOING...........

VY is a quitter. He ran away from his team and his home even for a week and everyone thought he was a suicide risk or already dead. He then quit on his coach and team.

Does anyone remember this?

That is a bargain to pick up?

Do we really think we as a fan base would be easier on him than the Tenesee fan base pressure?

Don't forget we also need bodies for ST, like Amaya, Hilliard, and maybe some others we picked up this year.

Poizen the only thng you remember are inflated media reports. You have no idea what the real story was.

I said that this would happen a long time ago.
There are a lot of free agents who will not consider coming down here to play for the Dolphins because of the unsettled coaching and FO situations.

Signing Orton is an upgrade, but nothing that is going to be a huge change, he can be inconsistent also. I would rather have Vince Young because he add a different element to the position.

Good point poizen.........i really did forget that.....the suicide thing

Defense is a free safety away from being championship caliber...but c'mon james, lets be a little realistic here...we need help at G, QB, RB, TE, And hartline is very unproven as a complimentary reciever to Marshall....and Orton Is almost like an effective Pennington...but he's not a franchise QB nor is he the FINAL peice to the puzzle we're looking for!!!!!

Poizen...

Good post and EXCELLENT FOROTTEN and RARELY mentioned points about VY's past....

DB...your move....

Boulder,

Problem I see, after signing Orton, if Henne wins the starting job he wont sign an extension. That means overpaying him in the 2012 season with the franchise tag.

Even if we have to dump Orton we're still on the hook for guaranteed money owed. Dude there are just so many ways this could go so wrong.

POIZEN .......

PLEASE POST AGAIN YOUR POST@ 2;51 PM FOR DB THE NO 1 VY FAN .......

Poizen,

Its simple if he acts up just cut him. Worst case we still have Henne. Thats why its low risk high reward. Dont give up 2 draft picks for an average guy. Who has been dump by 2 teams.

For Henne fans (how do you blame this on Henning?):

The Dolphins have a lot invested in Marshall, and he isn't moving in lockstep with Henne. Who's fault? Well, I just go to the Tennessee game last year when 5-10 Cortland Finnegan matched up against the 6-4 Marshall at the goal-line for three plays - and for three plays Henne threw the other way.

Joe, excellent point at 14:40...But I was referring to Bush returning punts...I don't think he's ever returned kickoffs...I could be wrong, maybe he did in college...I did the same thing as you during the lockout...Didn't really post anything on Armando's blogs...It was rather depressing to say the least...

POIZEN.......

DO YOU THING DB A REAL FIN FAN ? EVERY TIME HE POINTS TO A PLAYER ,HE TURNS OUT TO BE ON SUICIDE WATCH .

Henne wins the starting job over Orton then it "hello franchise city"! We'll have to grossly overpay him to keep him. Then he could still walk in 2013 because under the new cba you cant franchise a player twice.

It would be Henne's way of saying "up your a*ss " to the fins organization and its fans too. This thing can become very ugly my fin friends.

Poizen,

VY is not the 1st and will not be the last QB to be treated like a red headed step child by his HC. Fisher never wanted him and had it in for him from the start.

It is a difficult situation to be in and Young could have handled it better. Was it all his fault? No way.

Do guys in their early 20's make mistakes? Yeah, all the time.

Do guys who made mistakes turn it around? Yeah, all the time.

This focus on the VY drama is myopic. The Dolphins have a player who punched his pregnant girlfriend. The Dolphins have several players who drink and drive. What is a worse character move?

Finally, world champion teams are full of bad character guys. This is a parody league. Talent wins games.

Good GM's and good organizations are able to take advantage of situations like this by adding talent other teams are not hot to take a chance on.

ALL OF THE SUDDEN DB AFRID HENNE WILL WALK AND GET A GREAT CONTRACT ELSE WHERE ................I THOUGHT HENNE WAS NO GOOD .

DUSTY BOTTOMS- are you HIGH? Bulger, really?

Orton IS not worth two draft picks....maybe a 3rd and a player of equal caliber....

Mrs. Orton

OK, how about the green bay game where henne placed a pass perfectly to Marshall and he forgot to tap both feet in?

Or the multiple drops dead in Marshalls hands.

C'mon man, if your gonna bag on Henne come up with facts.

Marshall was as much to blame as Henn and neither should be blames more than Henning and the O-line getting hurt.

Please think about that.

Oh, and DDD the vince young thing was not overhyped. his family went on record looking for him claiming he may already be dead. I remember the interviews with the family crying and blaming Fisher.

I was watching some of jason snellings you tube videos and he is a good back.......great hands never gets stopped for a loss......would be great in the red zone.....cheap too.....we could add him and norwood get size and speed for the price of one bradshaw......plus he fumbles ALOT

POIZEN,

youre right it was his mother crying all over tv saying vy was hurt inside and out........which points to mental instability

Oregon Dolphins fan, another great post at 03:01PM...Keep it up bro...

Poizen

Those were facts I gave you. I guess you only want receivers than never drop balls ever. He hung on to 86, not bad. Henne throughs the ball 9000 miles an hour to a guy 10 feet away, you catch it.

mrs orton, thats their job to catch it!?!

The Dolphins' pursuit of Orton may now hinge on ability to renegotiate his contract. Pricetag probably will be about a third-round pick............better NOT be a long term deal!!!!

How pathetic this organization has become. Never giving the fans what they want yet still failing when doing it thier way. Every season there's something to be sour about as fans.

where did you get the third round pick info??? hope its true what a deal

It's beyond ridiculous to blame Marshall for Henne's shortcomings.

With the glut of D'ends we have & Denver defense being so poor, I'm sure we could trade a contract year DE to Denver along with a 4th.

Trade Langford or Merling. Both contracts are up next year & neither have proven to be anything but adewquate DE's. With Starks, Odrick & McDaniel locked up for the next couple years, they could be bait to bring in Orton.

Ortin, worst QB rating on 3rd down conversions.

FACT.

Thats my take,

superPHIN,

You're right. Unless the Dolphins get Orton to also agree on a contract restructure they are also on the hook to pay Orton over $8 million this season just for walking in the door.

DB I agree. I would rather get someone without the need to give up draft picks. But good QBs want long term deals north of 6 million no matter who we get. Unless we really just don't want real competition for henne.
I assume Ireland knows all of this and if they still goes after orton then, we just have to deal with it.

ORTON + THE BEAST = TD CELEBRATIONS BABY !!!!!!

nick. I caught 86 passes for over 1000 yards even while missing two games. Not good enough for you?

Vince Young had a running feud with Jeff Fisher. It got ugly. No disputing that. But nobody really knows the whole story. Everybody makes mistakes. Some people learn and grow, some don't. VY is a spectacular talent, and worth the risk. If he flakes, cut him and move on. But maybe, he becomes the next Michael Vick. In hindsight, how many teams wish they had taken a chance on Vick? About 31.

if i throw the ball to you 130 times then no!

its all gone quiet on twitter and profootballtalk!

weak kiddie argument. you lose. go have your chocolate milk and go to bed now.

have you seen the olindo mare deal? $12 over 4 years with $4 mil signing bonus!

NO NO NO NO NO NO

It is absolutly ridiculous to blame Henne for every damn problem this offense had.

I do not want to be disrespectful to anyone and their opinion. BUT I am giving facs also Mrs Orton.

You may not like them! And I get that.

Henne NEEDS to get better, but this argument is utter BS. somehow you all can blame Henne for Marshalls issues, the O-line, the coaching whatever the hell you want.

But when someone throws the proof back that the other people could be part of Henne's problem, it is insane?

How the hell is it so one sided? Honestly think about it.

your blaming one guy for all problems when maybe collectivly they all screwed up in different ways, and if they all clean it up they all might be much better????? Doesnt that make more sense?????

Joe Schmoe, that's a good point you bring up. We have a lot of depth on the d-line. Make a trade with Denver if you're so obsessed with Orton. Trade a Merling or a Langford. No draft picks please!

VINCE YOUNG AINT MIKE VICK.......PERIOD.....VICK IS THE MOST ELECTRIFYING ATHLETE IN THE NFL.......PLEASE STOP THE COMPARISONS CAUSE THEY ARE BOTH BLACK QUARTERBACKS......VINCE YOUNG IS MORE LIKE JAKE PLUMMER THAN MIKE VICK....SERIOUSLY

Finsfan72.

Vince young a dolphin ? I LOVE IT.

I only prey that Nnamdi Asomugha doesnt sign with wee york....cuz it wont matter who QBs this team....Revis and Asomugha, marshall will be lucky to have four catches in either of those games COMBINED!!!!

VY is one of the best qb's in the league with the deepball touch. Plus he can make plays with his legs when things breakdown. Its VY's middle passing game that needs improvement. Overtime this automatically gets better for qb's over time and in the right organization.

Joe Schmoe, in all honesty, and this is just my opinion, I would prefer the Dolphins take a chance with Vince Young rather than trading for Kyle Orton...
