DeAngelo Williams returns to Carolina :(

The Carolina Panthers will announce in the next 24 hours that they have retained running back DeAngelo Williams.

Why am I reporting this?

You have to ask?

The Dolphins were interested in Williams and were one of three teams that made offers to perhaps the best running back available in free agency.

The offer was considered no more than a flirtation by Williams, however, once it became clear the steep price it would take to pry him loose from the Panthers or keep him from going to Denver. ESPN.com is reporting Williams has agreed to a 5-year, $43 million contract that includes a whopping $21 million in guaranteed money.

The Dolphins were shopping for a running back and continue that search. But they were looking around at Sears and Williams was hanging out at Sak's.

So what does this mean?

Miami still needs a running back to pair with rookie Daniel Thomas. Ahmad Bradshaw is still a possibility, although the Giants are considered the heavy favorites to retain him. He could be considered the next-best available runner. He also would not come cheaply as it would require outbidding New York.

The Dolphins have talked to agent Drew Rosenhaus about Bradshaw and Rosenhaus has given the team the appropriate parameters for making that work.

Then we head to the clearance aisle. Miami can still go back to Ronnie Brown, who is offering himself to the highest bidder. Miami can look at Cedric Benson, assuming he's not in jail today. Miami can go very cheap for Atlanta's Jason Snelling.

I suppose there's also Ricky Williams.

The pray-for-it-to-happen solution is that Reggie Bush gets cut by the Saints because he has a cap value north of $11 million. Then Miami swoops in and add him for the sake of giving him the football 15 times a game or so.

Don't bank on that working out perfectly.

Other running backs that are available include Willis McGahee, Joseph Addai, Marion Barber, Carnell Williams, Darren Sproles, or ...

The patriots are not that good...the jets showed us that you pressure tom and he is thrown off.......as for the steelers they have to sure up woodley or they are hurting we have a good chance of being the wild card team no doubt about it

And the "suck for Luck" thing is ignorant too. The defense is too good. If everything possible went wrong with this team, they'd still get 5 wins. What pick would that get them? 7th overall? I'm sure they could get a real good linebacker with that pick lol

Offseason moves? With the exception of the draft and yesterday and today, when might they have had time to make offseason moves? Be early to write them off, no?

I think they had a decent draft, adding to their offensive line, getting a younger running back and adding a guy like Gates. They're not done yet and if they can add Orton and a running back they wil be better than last year.

What is it you like that the Jets and Pats have done so far? How'd you like to be the Jets trying to resign all the FA's they have to?

Sadly thats where we are as dolfans. We're now comparing medicrity against greater mediocrity and considering it a true sign of success.

Sad sad state in our once great legacy!

I cherish every moment we spend together but I do not wish to bathe with you. Most of you are obese, not well-endowed and retain an unpleasant odor that is most disagreeable when you are nude.

But you are still dear to me.

And how do you figure they are overpaying for Kolb? I consider what the Cards are proposing for Kolb to be overpaying. Would you rather we were doing that? I wouldn't. They guy has played seven games and to me he hasn't shown that much. I think they are crazy to be doing what they want.

That should have said 'overpaying for Orton'.

The jury's out on our frustrating FO. They might be on the right track. Draft was OK maybe. We'll see. The next 3 days will tell about FA.

We have to wish for the best, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Offseason moves? Jets or at the crust of signing Asomugha. With he and Revis that completely counters adding rookie Edmund Gates.

Will they actually get Asomugha signed yet remains to be seen. But still they have the aggressive balls to go after him. Nothing we've done speaks of aggressiveness, not even our draft. We passed over a few potentially better players just to again play it safe.

Sorry DB but you're all wet. If you think the answer to what ails the Dolphins was to wait until Vince Young came available you're wrong. Young has shown not to be a leader and he'd let the team down when they needed him most. I was OK with the team going after Young but Orton is a better fit. Assuming the FO doesn't overpay for him then I'll appluad the FO for this move and I'm not a fan of giving up picks.

Dolphins r said to be renegotiating Orton's 9 million dollar contract as we speak

If so perhaps the Dolphins r playing poker and have seen enuf of Henne as a starter !?

No way Henne to Marshall (which has NO chemistry whatsoever)
Replaces Orton to Marshall (who hold an NFL record 21 receptions in ONE game)

Looks like a turn around maybe in place
Our the Dolphins now actually building an offensive team around Marshall (their only elite skill player of offense)
So much for building a team around Henne or building a running 1st football team (NO FA RBs signed, yet)

Our pass blocking was much better than our run blocking last season

Go Phins!

finsfan72 @ 5.08

i think u make a valuable point, overlooked by many

this fo IS making progress

someguys seem to think the fo can do their job like it's a boardgame with paper money and no consequences

sure they could have wrapped up orton or bradshaw by now but they have to be realistic and get value (i hope thats whats going on)

bradshaw coming would be great but he will cost the earth and is prob just ramping up his nyg deal

James, Success revolves most around the ability of our O-line to protect and open holes.

If they can do that, We WILL make the playoffs.

What planet are you on? I never mentioned anything abo6ut Kolb. We're after Orton and John Clayton reported Elway was seeking a 2nd and 3rd rd'er for Orton. That isnt grossly over paying for Orton to you?

CraigM, you scare me sometimes, you dont either completely read or completely understand what youre replying to in reponse to other posts at times. Please quit scaring mel. LOL....

You have NO clue what this FO has been involved in the last two days. You're going on sheer speculation. On the one hand you're talking about what the Dolphins haven't done to date and on the other hand your talking about what the Jets MIGHT do. I hope they do add Asomugha. It would chew up a huge part of their salary cap. they could kiss goodbye to Brad Smith, Braylon Edwards, Ellis and others. They've signed Holmes to a five year contract and while I was hoping they would lose him, he's another infraction away from being suspended for a year.

i love o line play.......jake long is my fav dolphin......you are so correct about the trenches thats where you win and loose games

i hope we can land one of the atl linemen

Ok, I saw you meant Orton. Still paying a 2nd and 3rd for Orton is not only over paying, but GROSSLY over paying.

Home, You must not have watched games, I can not find the stats that was on ESPN insider, but Henne was under duress more than almost any other QB in the league. Henne had the 4th least amount of time from snap to throw, or sack. Only 3 were a second worse.

Well, you may have a slight point, There was not a hole in the interior more than about 10 times all year.

Don't you think we should wait to see what they actually send Denver's way before we accuse this fo of overpaying?

If you'd bothered to read the following post you would have seen that I corrected it from Kolb to Orton. Simple mistake.

Nobody is saying it's a second and a third. That's just one person's specualtion. Neither you and I have a clue what is being offered.

DB, the Jets will have NO money for anything else if they do that. Edwards, Cromartie, and Brad Smith will all walk. Kris Jenkins and Lamar Woodley retires, they only have 2 linebackers in a 3-4 scheme, and they have no D-line. If the sign him they'll have $25+million invested in one position on a team of 53. How's that going to work long term?

Poizen Henne was under duress mostly becuase he handles the blitz very poorly. On numerous occasions the blitz didnt get to Henne so much the fact he seems to walk right into sacks.

It's frustrating to be a decades-long diehard fan and have NO say about what happens. It's all up to Jeff and the rest of the FO. All we can do is hope they're on the right track.

Again DB, it's simply speculation that it's a second and a third. I don't believe the Dolphins would do something like that. I would agree with you that's a lot to give up.

I hope they get Randy Moss too. He was a complete non-factor the second half of last season. He did absolutely nothing in Minny and Tennessee last season. Be my guest...

Yes watch all the games, every single play Poizen,

Many games
Henne had real good pass blocking
Plenty of time but
WRs like BM were double & triple covered and Simply The Bess many times doubled

Hope Gates changes that ;)

Rex Ryan is rubbing his two feet together hoping he could sign more free agents.

Jay Glazer just said Dolphins offering a conditional Fourth, which could turn into a Third if Dolphins make playoffs. Sounds reasonable to me

Jets still could get Moss on the very cheap. what some of you fail to realize is by adding Asomugha they potentially take 7 of the opposition's points of the score board too.

Two lockdown corners on both sides allows them to do a lot more blitzing, creating more sack and pick opportunities. They could look very similar to that Ravens SB championship. Just with a better offensive nucleus.

NO WAY they give up a 2nd and a 3rd.

Nice to knock the Jets but

The fact is 2 years in a row The HATED NY Jets
were one game away from the SuperBowl

while the Dolphins had 2 back to back losing seasons of 7-9

No playoffs

only won 1 game at HOME last season

Fish laid an egg on every prime time game

Just Saying ...

Sparano said he wanted a QB along the mold of Aaron Rodgers. Someone that can make something out of nothing. A mobile QB. Vince Young is the only QB that fills that mold.

He's the only QB that could still be the triggerman in the wildcat, pass or run. The Fins plan to use a lot more of it(the top four draft picks have wildcat experience and then through in Daboll, a wildcat coordinator).

Sparano and Ireland don't care about personal issues. If they did, they never would have signed Marshall who had a history of hitting women. Or kept Williams. VY's issues are small compared to these two.

For those that think he shouldn't be picked because he's not smart enough, guess what? His wonderlic score of 16 is one point higher that Dolphin's great, Marino who had a 15 score. I'm not saying he can pass like Marino.

VY wants to be a Fin. If I'm right, the FO has already spoken with VY and have told him to start packing his bags.
VY is moving to (V)izca(Y)a.

DB, I get it. Henne should pick up the blitz, block the guy, then get back into position of QB and throw the ball?

Hmmm, a lot to ask of a QB. He was not on the most sacked QB list...

I know poeple don't like him. Like I said he needs to get better... But some people are way to hard on a guy for being on a team with one of the worst Offense I have seen in a long long long time.

They can knock their socks off DB. Again I'm hoping they get Asomaghu. Just because you have shutdown corners doesn't guarantee anything. Yes, they are probably the two best in the league. Let's how things are going in January when they need to stop the run and when Sanchez is 5-18 for 47 yards. You can only win so many 6-3 games.

I heard on NFL Network that the fins are seriously looking at Marion Barber. Great... another throw away from Dallas. What is wrong with this F/O? First of all, Barber was ranked 53rd among running backs last year...behind Ronnie and Ricky I might add. For crying out loud I am so sick of these clowns signing players that are worse then the ones they're trying to replace. Anybody else agree with me?

Oh DB, mind you he had to be in 3 stop and 5 step drops as the blits was coming... with 2 to max 3 wr's running intermediate routes.

Truth, not making it up to justify my point.

the equation leads to disaster for any QB.

A 4th rd pick for Orton is more pallatable for me. The price raising to a 3rd rd'er just because we're one and done if my "miracle" we make the playoffs, I still dont like.

I would only raise it to a 3rd rd pick "IF" Orton gets us to the 2nd rd of the playoffs. Anyother way its stiil like rewarding both ourselves and Denver for yet again becoming a one and done playoff team.

Again its like comparing mediocrity to greater mediocrity as a measure of success. That's all a one and done playoff appearance gets us.

I'm still in Henne's corner because like Poizen I don't blame everything from last year on Henne. However, if Orton comes in and shows he's the man for the job get rid of Henne after this year and let Orton play while next year's first develops. I've always been about giving Henne a fair chance but fair's fair. If he can't get it done by the end of this year it's Orton's job.

Here's a CRAZY idea....Assuming VY would be dirt cheap, what if we sign Orton AND VY. Henne, Orton, VY and Devlin duke it out. Winner starts, loser gets cut.

I maybe be losing it....

Im shocked after consecutive 7-9 seasons many fans here would accept a one and done playoff appearance if it just meant making the playoffs. As a fin fan Im appalled.

Pursuit of Excellence seems to have hugely failed us.

Orton stinks its either palmer or stick with what we have...my god

Orton stinks its either palmer or stick with what we have...my god

WE all want excellencey but You aren't likely to go from 7-9 to the SB. Gotta scratch and claw your way up- or be BOLD and get lucky.

Sorry man you've got the wrong end of the stick on this one. It's about making the team better. Going out and acquiring Orton accomplishes that. They were in the D Williams talks and they are in the Bradshaw talks and maybe they will be in the Bush talks at some point too. They are TRYING to get better. Nothing mediocre about it. They recognize the weaknesses and are trying to strengthen them. Tough to criticize that.

All 32 teams are trying to get better. Some are trying harder (and smarter) than others.

1st rd qb grooms? Many here have completely forgotten VY is a 1st rd qb with 19 4th qtr comeback wins and a 30-17 win loss record. While Orton only has a 32-29 win loss record.

Why isnt the conversation here geared more towards why Orton is only 32-29 after 5 seasons.

VY has clearly outperformed him in terms of wins ands losses. Isnt it wins and losses that counts most?

Orton's just barely a .500 win-loss qb in 5 season in the league. Someone plaese explain to me how that is getting better at the position?

Henne has started less games(14-13 as a starter) and has a nearly identical win-loss % has Orton. Guys signing Orton isnt really getting better. It more like more of the same.

VY's W/L record is great, even if you factor in Chris Johnson, it's sort of balanced out by a lack of quality recievers

Wins and losses is what counts. Henne's won-loss record isn't that bad. But Orton has played on some bad teams in Denver and Chicago. Are you seriously going to blame Orton for the fact that Denver went 4-12 last year? Did you look at his numbers?

Darlington on NFL Network...

Bruce Gradkowski signed by the Bengals today...now THAT is the true definition of mediocrity!!

What I was trying to say is if Orton buys us time for a 1st round rookie to develop then I'm all for it. It's Henne's job to lose but if he shows he can't get it done then we move on with Orton until the rook can beat him out. I don't know what's wrong with that plan.

Every year same old story. This Team is the joke of FL alone with the Marlins. 2011-12 season 6-10 no playoffs

Last 2 days I shouted with joy as one QB after another was signed....Hasslebeck, McNabb, etc.

Orton and VY the only real upgrades available. Orton solid, safer. VY huge upside, riskier.

I'm sick of mediocrity. I'd prefer VY but Orton is an upgrade. Look at his TD/Int ratio last 2 yrs.

The debate on Orton comes down to the price. If they don't over pay with picks, we need another QB no matter what, so its ok.

Which QB would keep DC's up late at night? No question VY is the only one available that would cause DC's concern. You have to take calculated risks. If they can interview VY, see where his head is at, it would be the gutsy, exciting call if they felt ok about him.

Orton will be one more in a long string of journeyman QB's coming to Miami that won't live up to expectations and be gone in two years. Whopeee! Anything higher than a 4th rounder and I'd say we'd be better off with Bulger as a cheap back up, ride with Henne, and address a real QB in the draft if Henne doesn't step it up this year.

Nice conversation all, hopefully more to talk about tomorrow.

Kill me on this one DB i you want.

But I will never get over VY being a quitter, And I do not want a quitter on this team.

And DB, There is NO proof at all that he will perform. Kerry Collins out played this guy @ 83 years old.

sarcam on purpose.

talk to you tomorrow.

VY outperforms Orton in all statistical categories, is a mobile QB, brings star power AND comes cheaper.

The play it safe front office is condemning the franchise to mediocrity.

This was the year to sign Young, draft T Pryor and dramatically improve the talent level at QB ON THE CHEAP.

When your team is still lacking in talent level, your directly competing with the Wets and cheatriots and you need to put fans in empty orange seats....you go get VY.

Meanwhile Ireland and Mr. FG sell out next years draft to pursue mediocrity now. Pathetic.

You guys are crazy if you dont think Orton is an upgrade at qb! His ability along with his
relationship with B.M. is going to prove you naysayers wrong
