« Why Reggie Bush? Here are the handful reasons | Main | Orton trade situation might last until Aug. 4 »

Reggie Bush is about more than statistics

If you are a pure stats geek, you're not too impressed by Reggie Bush as an NFL player. You're not too fired up by the Dolphins nailing down the acquisition of Bush this morning.

He's a 4.0-yard per carry running back. Any season he's carried the ball more than 100 times, his average has dropped to 3.7 yards per rush. He only scored one TD last season. He's never averaged over 10 yards per catch. His most explosive running play last season was a 23-yard run. His most explosive reception last season went for 20 yards.

And all those number, dear stat geek, misses the football point.

Reggie Bush is a defensive coordinator's nightmare. Period.

Anytime he comes onto the field, the defense must account for him. Adding him means the Miami offense has doubled the number of players the defense must account for from one a year ago -- Brandon Marshall -- to two this coming year.

Bush is also a matchup pain in the posterior for defenders. How many linebackers can actually run with this guy? That would be maybe ... a handful? So many times use either a safety or a nickel cornerback to cover Bush.

But here's the problem: What does the defense do when the offense isn't in its pass personnel package? That means the defense has to play with base personnel and that means, either you're praying your linebacker suddenly runs like he swallowed a dozen Red Bulls or you're using a DB on the kid, which is just crazy as matchups go.

In a nutshell, Bush in the game means the offense is now dictating to the defense instead of the other way around. When was the last time a Miami offense was able to do that? It's been a while.

And that makes Bush more valuable than just the mere statistics he posts.

REGGIE BUSH SIGNED A 2 YR DEAL W THE MIAMI DOLPHINS :)

So now you love the guy?
Of course pending what we gave up , this is a better move than overspending for a rb after you just drafted one.
Orton
Bush
Maybe Zach Miller ot T Heap ?

Great move, this team needed to spice things up!

Most linebackers run faster than guys standing on the sidelines. But I'm ok with thedeal if we gave up nothing better than a 6th rounder.

ARMANDO, IF U NEED HELP GETTING THE DOLPHINS NEWS FIRST

LIKE THE REGGIE BUSH SIGNING NEWS

GIVE A CALL

1-800- LUV - HOME

I would love for the Phins to get Heap or Miller.

I like Bush coming to Miami, to bad he couldnt bring Kim K on board

"In a nutshell, Bush in the game means the offense is now dictating to the defense instead of the other way around. When was the last time a Miami offense was able to do that? It's been a while."

Excellent point Armando

Marshall
Simply The Bess
Gates

Bush coming out of the backfield

Sounds Awesome

Go Phins!

If it's for a 5-6th pick, it's a no brainer. I wish it would have been more than 2 years. Same with McDaniel. Bring guys in longer term. Back load the contract & save cap space this year.

With that said, I don't like him as a rush compliment to Thomas. He's a threat, but not as a RB behind the QB. I think we need a more durable RB. Maybe they bring in Barber from Dallas or bring back Ronnie.

Hoping we can land Orton for a 3rd or 4th rounder & we would wind up with the 2nd best qb in the afc east. If not, sign Young. With NE getting Haynesworth, we better hope our OL is much improved. Goodness, Wilfork & Haynesworth on the same line?

Regarding the Jets, I hope they do sign Nmandi. Not only will this prohibit them from signing WR's, the Jets FO doesn't understand football. You can have the best DB's in the NFL but if you can't pressure the QB, any WR will eventually get open.

They tried with Lito Sheppard, Cromartie & possibly Nmandi. They may be creative with the cap & contracts, but their understanding of the game is what prevents them from taking the next step.

With all th emoney to Holmes & no real complement on the other side, he'll be double teamed. Expect Sancheeze's development to halt or regress without the plethora of weapons he currently has.

..Ask Drew Brees if offense was easier with Bush on the field. I think that the answer is obvious. Armando made the points as to why.

Like I said on the last post. Our team got better today..Why all the belly aching?

this will be another year without legit nfl tight ends for us????? if denver plays hardball, grab vince young!

Armando, those are the reasons why I've been saying they should get Reggie Bush...We need a HR hitter...That's exactly what he is...Now we've got Marshall and Bush on the field...That should open things up for Bess, Hartline and Gates...But we still need a QB and a Guard...A TE wouldn't do any harm either...Not big on Fasano...

DD................... THE WAGON IS GETTING FULL OF R.BUSH FANS .......

TO BE ACCURATE,DB WAS FIRST TO SHEER FOR THAT MOVE YESTERDAY.

We wanted play-makers on offence. We got one. Assuming the compensation wasn't high, I don't know what the problem is. I think he'll be a great compliment to Thomas. I agree, he'll be a nightmare for DCs....a real change of pace. My only concern with this is how will he fit in when it's cold out in December and January and the gams are plodding in December and January? Will he be able to take the heavy going and will he be the asset that he might be on a faster surface? That's why I think wh need more at RB. We need another guy like Barber or Brown back there too. Hope it's true.

Just found this update on ESPN. I think it would be a very interesting competition between Henne and Orton. Like the Bush addition too.

UPDATE: Sources tell Rumor Central that Kyle Orton will likely be traded to the Miami Dolphins by the end of the day.

This is an excellent point by Mando. The guy creates headaches when he is on the field in match-ups. Between him and Gates speed, we will see a more productive Marshall. Plus if we are going to throw a checkdown pass, whose hands do you want the ball in?? Bush will be a great addition to this team. I also do not believe we will see Ronnie or Ricky anymore. Hilliard and Kory Sheets are more then capable, but we will see.

My biggest concern with Miami signing Reggie Bush is his health. He's appeared in sixteen games only once, his rookie season. It's clear he can create favorable match-ups when he's on the field, but will he be able to hold up physically?

IRELAND IS DOING WHAT HE WAS SET TO DO .... MAKE FINS MORE POWERFUL WITH SPEED ................

I mean, 10-15 plays a game plus a few punt returns? Considering the crazy contract we would of had to give Williams...this was a no brainer...unless it was for anything more than a 5th rounder...tops.

Armando...great points....now you have saved DB 3 pages of posting when he finally comes around.....

Joe,

Hard as it might be for you and others to believe I completely echo your comments. Good points...all.

ONE MORE THING....... TRAINING CAMP WILL BE OPEN TOMORROW.......

I PREDICT ORTON WILL BE THERE ........................

ALoco...I hope the bandwagon gets filled up. Bush is a Phin now. So no sense in rooting against him, or hoping he fails just to prove a point someone may have made on a football blog.. Just stating the facts that our team got better today. Cannot deny this.

You all are forgetting Sheets. He is the wildcard. The kid needs a chance, and could be the compliment to Bush and Thomas.....speed kills

KRIS,

DO YOU STILL BELIEVE I AM ARMANDO OR THE OTHER GUY YOU TALKED TO LAST NIGHT ?............

Armando -
What are the chances we land TE Greg Olson?

I PREDICT THE SUN WILL RISE TOMORROW.....
Pleez..........

My next two post will tell you what I think of you.....from the last blog....

DC..Aloco is a character...like a figment of your imagination when you were a kid......

Ignore everything he does....and he will disappear.....

OK
I'll buy it, but only because I think the dolphins are multidimensional enough to spread their attack around.

Hopefully that means less injuries for Bush and the rest of the offense.

Yeah guys, I think David makes a good point. Right now we're relying a rook and Bush to carry the load. Bush hasn't stayed healthy enough to be relied on. I think there's another shoe to drop. Maybe it's Brown, maybe it's Barber, maybe it's a guy like Addai. I think there's more to come.

at best...he is a figment of someone eles's imagination....

Another thing to keep in mind: remember all those crazy plays that Daboll(sp?) drew up for Cribbs? Now he gets to use them with Reggie. It'll def be fun to watch

Now..consider me taking my own advice....and....consider yoursel ignored.....

Colin Cowherd and John Clayton are trashing Miami's trade for Bush. Jeff Darlington just helped them trash the Dolphins too. I don't get it. Why is this not smart for Miami? They didn't pay much or give up much and they are NOT asking him to be the primary running back. That's Thomas' job. Personally I think the move is smart.

EVERY TIME SOME ONE IS TALKING TO ME LIKE DC.KRIS COMES IN AND TELLS THAT PERSON TO IGNORE ME AS IF THAT PERSON IS KRIS'S PET.

HAVE A RESPECT TO PEOPLE KRIS,YOU DIMINISH THEM BY TELLING THEM NOT TO TALK TO SOME ONE .................

R.BUSH.......OVER RATED
BRING A RB'S LIKE DAVIS OR WAKE IN DEFENSE ...YOUNG AND NOT IJURED ALL THE TIME .............

Aloco, Which is it?, Your happy the fins are gonna sgn him or Is he over=rated, You Flip -Flop more then a fish just caught..

david stated my main point. amando what good does this clown do us if he is on the sideline with injury. and trust me he will get injured not wanting it to happen just stating facts. never was a fan of this guy and i really feel our team just stepped 2 stepd backwards and if we trade for orton that would mean we have just given up 2 - 5 possible draft picks for an average qb (which we already have) and injury proned rb (which we will not resign r. brown). both reggie and ricky have fumbling problems. i just dont see these moves makeing out team better. i see this as setting out team back 2-4 years with nothing but a nut owner, coach and gm in another rebuilding team. next years draft will be a joke due to we will have no picks again for the mediocre talent this regime is bringing in free agency.

According to Michael Lombardi of NFL Network, "Orton's contract needs to be off the books of the Broncos tomorrow". I think Ireland has played this well so far.

WTF.COM////////// HE'S OVER RATED WHEN HE MAKES 10 MILLIOM W/SAINTS BUT WHEN HE COMES TO MIAMI FOR 9.75 MILLION FOR 2 YEARS,I LIKE IT AT 50% DISCOUNT ......... I AM A FIN FAN NOT ANY PLAER FAN ............ BACALA

TRICKY IS A MEMBER OF THE GANG OF DEFEAT ALONG WITH WTF.ME THINGS THERE CHEIF DYING BRED.

FAKE AOCO @ 12.22 PM

"Reggie Bush is a defensive coordinator's nightmare. Period."
--------------
That was the same thing people used to say about Ted Ginn Jr. DC's nightmare who needs to be accounted for on every play.

If this guy's such a nightmare matchup, why aren't his stats better; espcially considering that he was coming from an explosive offensive that had a lot of threats on the field.

IRELAND IS DOING WHAT HE WAS SET TO DO .... MAKE FINS MORE POWERFUL WITH SPEED ................

Posted by: ALoco | July 28, 2011 at 12:07 PM

Dude your flipfloping.Again, Take a stand and stick with it.

Here is the million dollar question -- is Brian Daboll a creative enough Offensive Co-ordinator to put Bush in positions where he can succeed.

Daboll had some limited success turning Josh Cribbs into an offensive playmaker so hope is not lost.

WTF.............. YOU CAN IMAGINE THINGS AND ATTACK ME BUT YOU R WRONG......... MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR MISTRESS .

no gang of defeat, just stating facts brother just stating facts when you people stop thinking with you stupid bleeding hearts and start thinking with your brain (if you have one)then you will see what i takes to built a championship team and Ross does not now this at all!!!!!!

Don't we have to see what picks are invlolved in acquiring Bush and Orton before we get all bent out of shape giving up draft picks? Quick question for the masses.....who did we take in the 5th or 6th round in LAST year's draft? How about the year before? Not too many of these guys pan out. I have no problem if that was what was given up to get ahead of the line for Bush. The alternative was to risk losing him to the Rams or Eagles. Then what?

I still would like to see us add VY over Orton. Can you imagine the night mare for defenses when we'll have:

Marshall/Gates--wr's
Clay-- seam threat lb mismatch
Bush-- out of the backfield lb coverage mismatch

Then the dual pass/run threat of VY if pass protect breaks down. DC's around the league would be sh!tting thier pants in preparation for us.

TRICKY........ THAT WAS CUBAN AKA FAKE ALOCO WHI ATTACKED YOU......I DON'T ATTACK NO ONE ......

MJ, How much of a nightmare will he be on the sidelines with injurys, I mean he missed 8 games last year and 6 the year before that., I Like his speed and everything but it's like bringing a knife to a gunfight., Though I guess if they couldnt get the other 2(Bradshaw,Harris} I guess I'll take # 3, It's what the fins have been doing for a while anyway. Sigh.

I wrote it before Armando did. It wAs on the previous blog entry but Bush creates problems for the 35 or so plays hes on the field. He's not the only one that has to make a big play but if Bess or B Marsh or Gates makes a play because bush was the decoy, it's just as valuable. He makes them a much better offensive team in allot of ways. Now go get Orton. He is much more of a big play QB than Henne. We could have a very dynamic offense this year. Match that with the D we have and could sneak into playoffs.

Why give Denver anything? Why not wait until they cut him, grab him, and save draft pick?

Gary,

Not just situations where he can succeed, but situations where Bush's presence on the field may help open up big plays for Marshall, etc.

FASANO ?

HARTLINE ?

WAIT FOR NEWS ON ONE OF THEM ..................

I believe we need another RB. I think we should resign Ronnie or Ricky.

Do you think Daniel Thomas, a rookie, is ready for the full-time (20-30 touches) job? with no offseason, I think is not going to be prepared, and will struggle.

Bush is a great player for the 2nd or 3rd option, maybe 10-15 touches a game.

Ronnie or Ricky - 10 touches
Bush - 10 touches
Daniel Thomas - 10 touches.

Here's one for the Orton embracers. Hope this changes your minds: 2010 Orton sacks

GM1 3 sacks
GM2 1 sack
GM3 1 sack
GM4 6 sacks
GM5 1 sack
GM6 1 sack
GM7 4 sacks
GM8 4 sacks
GM9 0 sacks
GM10 5 sacks
Gm11 3 sacks
GM12 4 sacks
GM13 1 sack
Gm14 to 16 did not play

*Hope you Orton lovers are fully happy with bringing in this sack magnet.

2 SPOTS LEFT IN THE ORTON WAGON.....................................

Henne will have a better year, than Orton.

Will BUSH run the WILDCAT???

kris/ALoco, here's a suggestion, just ignore each other!

DB, no, no, no, no, no. If you think Marshall was angry with Henne, what do you think will happen when he realizes Young only passes like 2-3 times a game? You think he'll be a good locker room guy then?

Craig should be the one who's saying this, not me, but Ireland is doing good work this week. His decision-making has been pretty spot on. Only thing I'd add now is a TE, but we haven't heard any signs of that (unless someone else has).
