Signings already in pipeline, more to come today

The Dolphins began rounding up undrafted free agents on Monday. Wow, I'm reporting on football today!

The Dolphins can not sign any undrafted free agent until 10 a.m. today so any report of these guys being signed is incorrect. But under the new collective bargaining rules ratified Monday by both the league and the players union, teams could begin negotiating or agree to terms with undrafted free agents.

And Miami did exactly that, agreeing to terms with at least seven and probably 10-12 undrafted free agents at this hour. No, these will not be top of the roster guys. None were drafted. I see a couple already who will merely be camp bodies.

But out of this group a new Dan Carpenter or Davone Bess might thrust himself onto the roster. So the list of players on Miami's undrafted free agent radar, meaning they've agreed or are negotiating with the team so far:

Praire View A&M OLB Quinton Spears. He's classic 3-4 OLB type. 6-4 and 240 pounds now. Could use a little bulk. He ran a 4.69 at his Pro Day.

Rutgers DE Jonathan Freeney. He projects as an OLB. He ran a 4.72 in the 40 at his Pro Day. He's a Florida kid coming home.

South Carolina G Garrett Chisholm: Had a tough year personally last year. He lost both his mom and dad to cancer and then suffered an ACL knee injury. He's still not 100 percent but he's reportedly close enough to work with.

San Diego State CB Jose Perez. This one isn't exactly done yet, but WR Roberto Wallace, a former San Diego State star, welcomed Perez to the Dolphins on twitter on Monday. Kid's a 5-11 (good size) guy with decent speed (4.47 in the 40).

FAU QB Jeff Van Camp. Um, interesting delivery. He's got something of a hitch. He reminds of Bernie Kosar. Played for the same coach, too, in Howard Schnellenberger. Bernie Kosar was awesome! Maybe Van Camp can surprise.

Arizona TB Nic Grigsby. He's been injured. A lot. As in two consecutive seasons. But he has a 45-inch vertical leap, meaning he can basically jump over cars or short people. He had 2,957 career yards and 28 rushing TDs in his college career.

Penn State TE Brett Brackett. Excellent team leader for Joe Pa. He's 6-5 and 250 and runs a 4.6. Has the immediate smell of a practice squader but who knows?

Serious, big-dollar free agency begins at 10 a.m. today. That's when teams are allowed to begin negotiating with them. I expect the Dolphins will be on the phone with the Denver Broncos to check on the availability of Kyle Orton. He is on the trade block and I expect the interest in him will be keen.

I know some of you have dismissed my affinity for Orton, but he is simply the best fit for Miami. I also expect them to be talking to DeAngelo Williams as a free agent.

Better be!

Reggie Bush? Hasn't been released yet. He might not be a today thing, if at all.

This is a today thing: I remind you here why you should expect big "exciting" things from the Miami Dolphins this free agency and trade period. Please check it out.

Furthermore, Dolphins CEO Mike Dee will be on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo this morning. Yeah, I'll ask him about those Jets shirts. Tune in at 640-AM in South Florida or 640sports.com streaming live on the web. We'll be talking Dolphins and NFL the entire show.

Finally, check back here throughout the day. Stuff should be happening today. I'll try to keep you informed.

And follow me on twitter. I often post there quicker than here because I can do it from my phone.

Poizen...

When it comes to Ronnie Brown....I'm with you....I think long term...(2-3 years).... he is a better option than Rickey.....If we resign Rickey then next year we are in the same postion....chasing another running back to sign....and in essence.....chasing our tails.....

However Poizen....I have to disagree with your 9:27 am statment...about Daboll's offence....

Out of Henne's own mouth....he stated that it was a more QB friendly offence....kind of a mix between the jets and the new england offence.....

I don't thank we ran anything close to either of those the last couple of years.....

PLUS....do you REALLY want to see the same old offence with a few different terms and phrases.....

I don't....

If I'm Ireland, I get on the phone and STAY THERE all week!!!

Talk to Orton, talk to VY, talk to Kolb (long shot), heck, talk to Hasselbeck. Talk to D'angelo, better yet, talk to Bradshaw, talk to Bush (just to talk, nothing more). Talk to Nick Barnett, talk to JT (so he can retire where he belongs).

Don't be overly cautious and shoot yourself in the foot like you did with Solia (let's not rehash the disagreement Craig, no, they haven't hurt themselves with him yet, I'm just predicting). You want a guy, SIGN HIM. Or else someone else will. This is no time to cross your t's and dot your i's. This is the Wild West. A tornado is blowing through town and it's called the 2011 NFL FA period. DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE!!!

Technically, you could get a few missing pieces, have things go right (like Odrick doesn't get hurt jumping out of his car), Daboll brings some fire to the offense, and potentially we can be an above average to pretty good team. Yes, that's a stretch (IMO), but it's a possibility.
And since I was Debbie Downer yesterday, I'm going to pepper my comments today with some rays of hope, to show it's not all knives and arrows in Miami. We don't HAVE TO be the same team we've seen the last decade. We could actually start a season strong and keep riding the wave all the way through. But players will NEED to step up. Stars will NEED to shine. Coaches will NEED to make the right calls and decisions and have the right strategy. Amy Winehouse is dead, that much we know. What we don't know is what we have here with our Dolphins in 2011.

I'm waiting to see what transpires over the coming days, with piqued interest.

Just saying, Orton not big enough upgrade to bother with. We will just be the next team to keep him for 2 years and let him go. Waste of time.

Poizen@9;27, think you got that backwards. They're keeping verbage the same, plays will be different. That's why there was a big deal about the play book a few months ago.

2 minutes away from crazinessssss..........

Kitna at 38 had a better year than Orton at 28. Doesn't make me too impressed with Orton. Denver keeps Tebow and Brady Quinn over Orton. Read the tea leaves.

Poizen....

This is for you.....to back up my post earlier....

Henne described the offense as “similar to what I was used to at Michigan. It’s a New England offense — New England with a little Jets in it. It’s a good offense for a quarterback.”

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/03/01/2090077/miami-dolphins-chad-henne-says.html

The Wolf, ICU,you obviously dont know squat about football if you want those old, over the hill, declining QBs. Kyle Orton would be a nice option. He has done pretty well in Denver, and did quite well when Marshall was there. Google his stats, check them out. Vince young is a locker room cancer, no thanks. Bulger, McNabb, Hasslebeck. Are you serious??? The LAST thing the Dolphins need is a stop gap QB. Do your research before you post. Stop acting like GMS folks. You are just Fans. Stay that way....

Ok, So maybe I am eating crow here, and maybe wrong. I remeber Daboll saying that the offense Miami was running was similar to cleveland. In fact they utilize the wildcat, the difference was with Cribbs running it. He also mentioned formations were the same, but the language was different.

Then Henne opened his mouth and said he had the play book, and the offense was very similar, but had a few 4 and 5 set wide lineups that the current O he played with did not have.

If I had that wrong I apologize to the goof with 15 alias's insulting people.

KRIS.........

R.BROWN GOT TO GO .THE DOLPHINS NEED COMPLETE CHANGE AT THE RB SPOT , WE NEED YOUNG PLAYERS WITH UPSIDE FACTOR ,NOT INJURED EVERY FEW GAMES AND A ROTUNE AT RUNNING THAT ALL TEAMS ARE FAMILIAR WITH AS THE CASE WITH RICKY AND BROWN .

Julie, wanting an old QB with experience does not mean someone does not know anything about football. some people here do believe that Henne can be a good QB, but may not be polished yet. If that is a case, that old stop gap makes a tom of sense.

I am worse than the wolf, I am one that believes Henne is already good enough. I believe the problems from last year stemmed from the O-line more than anything, with a little of the coaching lossing control and becomong predictable.

Kris, Thanks for the link... For some reason I think I am still not that far off though. But either way, thanks for the link, my interpretation may have really sucked! :)

If no one else recognized, I have laid off of Dabboll since his hiring. I haven't criticized him like others, nor have I sung his praises.

I suggest we all wait and see what he does before we hate on the guy. Who knows, maybe he's the next hot thing in the NFL. But right now, we know what he's done, we don't know what he'll do for us.

Aloco, therea re two sides to every argument, and you are on the other side of me a Kris. And I truly get your point and it makes sense.

The thing is Ronnie made it through a full TOUGH year last year, with a makeshift line. And from those early injuries he really only has 4 years on his legs and back as a RB. With a solid line, he would be very solid to have. Especially if the price is lower than expected. Just throwing out that point.

Ricky was out injured last year?, Ronnie was out too??, Aloco Buy a clue, Let the adults talk football, Now go get your shine box.

Poizen....

Its all good.....

and don't let the trolls get to you.....(i know...i'm the last person on this blog that should be saying that)..... :[

POIZEN...........

R.BROWN IS LIKE A MOVIE STAR IN MIAMI AND WHEN A PLAYER REACH THAT POINT ,HE CARES MORE ABOUT NOT GETTING INJURED RATHER THAN PLAYING HARD FOOTBALL .............I SAY SIGN 2 YOUNG RB'S AND YOU WILL SEE THE IMPROVEMENT AS WITH OUR DEFENSE LAST YEAR EVEN WITH 1-7 AT HOME ...........

Last season Vince Young QB rating bout 99 and knows he is coming in as a back up to compete for the starting job

Kyle Orton QB rating bout 87 and wants only the starting job, expects to be paid much more, and the Dolphins would lose a draft pick

Kyle Orton WILL NOT be ready to start for the Miami Dolphins in their 1st preseason game in just over 2 WEEKS

Chad Henne is the starter

6.5 28 yr old (2) Time Pro Bowler Vince Young is the obvious choice for the next several year as the Dolphins Back Up QB, competing and ready to step in as needed

All the BS talk of VY mental stability is just that

BS Talk!

Vince Young soon will earn another Pro Bowl Birth

Miami Dolphins CANNOT pass on this opportunity

Welcome to Miami, Vince Young!

*** The Dynasty Be Fins! ***

If we sign Orton, DyingBreed will be saying what a great move it was.

POZIN........ KRIS STILL BELIEVE I AM THE GUY WHO INSULT HIM BUT I STILL LIKE TO READ HIM ...............ONE DAY KRIS WILL GIVE ME A BIG APOLOGY .........

P.S........ I THOUGHT WE KNOW NOW IT THE CUBAN MANCE WHO SIGNS WITH FAKE ALOCO .

If the Dolphins were to come out of this with Zach Miller, Bradshaw and Orton that would be ONE Hell of a job!! Will they? Of course not! If they could get Orton for a 4th or even a 3rd I would do it. Renegotiate and make it a $4-5 mil deal per year over the next three years. If Henne doesn't show it this year you draft a kid next year and you still have Orton for a couple of years. If Soliai shows up in shape, renegotiate his deal for $5-6 mil a year. Free up the money to sign Zach Miller and then add one of Bush, D. Williams or Bradshaw and couple him with Brown or Addai or McGahee. It's a WHOLE different team.

Now most guys are going to say we won't have the money for all that. Maybe...maybe not. But a lot would depend on what we could could get done with Soliai. It could free up a lot of money to do other things. All depends if he shows up in shape and if he's committed. would love to see Zach Miller in a Dolphins uniform. He'd be GREAT!!

DOES ANY ONE THINKS ORTON LOVES TO COME TO MIAMI TO COMPETE FOR THE JOB WITH HENNE AFTER HE WENT THROUGH THE SAME IN DENVE WITH TEBOW ??????????

I DON'T /////////////////

Jules - thank you for your kind words, I value your opinion, i only express my ignorant opinion on this blog, but it is here for us to express our opinions however ignorant, i am a fan not a gm or i would be on the phone not this blog

I don't want an over the hill qb, i want T brady, the context however is "likely to be available and not paying in draft picks" and doing what the ACTUAL GM said - bringing in a veteran to compete with Henne, imo we r gonna get a stopgap in everyone but vy of those who r widely discussed

i wouldn't fall out of bed if p manning was in aqua and orange next season, but u might call him a stopgap too

poizen - i beg to differ (u r not worse than the wolf) if u remember i was in the henne is fine bicycle basket before u!!(or at least at the same time, but we still need his backup)

VY 42 career 42 TD's, 42 INT's enough said.

And stats give it a break you sound really dumb with this Kinta garbage. You have to look at the player in terms of age, and stats, whether his trajectory is up or down, and COMMON SENSE.

VY HAS THE LOOK OF A FAT,OLD PLAYER WE DON'T NEED .

I'll say it again, if the Broncos trade Orton (and I think they will), I think they are nuts. I don't think Tebow is ready and I don't now if he ever will be. They are obviously doing this to get something for Orton while they can and if Tebow flops maybe they are in the Luck sweepstakes.

I'm also not sure it's smart for the Eagles to be trading Kolb. If they can get a first then great but to trade for a second for example, what are they going to do when Vick goes down or struggles, and it will happen? They are poised to win NOW and they may kick themselves for being overly aggressive trading him.

Aloco, Quit with "Iam Being Faked", Its you and only you,Everyone knows it,Stop with the bs. Now go get that Shine box.

TUBE OF GLUE AKA CUBAN AKA FAKE ALOCO........ YOU WERE CAUGHT 2 DAYS AGO AND IT'S TIME TO COME CLEAN ................

Ok Its been 30 minutes., Who'd the Dolphins sign?

Michael. I guess the Kitna stat scared you. Don't be scared.

Jets are in tough with all the FA's they have to sign....LOVE it!!

Aloco, We've spent countless hours together, Armando once called you "Many me", Why is that?, Cause your the faker, Take responsabillity for your actions boy.

Which duo inspires the least confidence?

Belicheck/Brady
Ryan/Sanchez
Sparano/Henne

Craig, I agree with you on Orton. I do not think he is available, or as available as he is being spoken about.

Wolf, It has been a while, and I never know if anyone supported Henne more than I or as long as I, but I am happy I am not alone because it was get's very lonly in that camp.. :) That is why I care less about the backup, just bring in an accomplished name, not VY. I do not want a quitter on this team.

CUBAN,,,,,,,,,,, TRY ONE MORE TIME ..... YOU WERE CAUGHT AND GOD BLESS YOU .

HENNE'S CONTRACT IS IN THE WORKS BEFORE HIS VALUE GO UP TO THE ROOF ............

Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos will place Orton on the trading block, and Orton’s time remaining as a Bronco may be down to hours, not days.

So despite all the talk about competition, Tim Tebow is almost certainly going to be the starter, with Brady Quinn as his backup.

Forget about Ronnie guys he's gone Bradshaw is the way to go we need speed back there!

Craig I agree I think the Jets are going to struggle if they can't get half of those guys signed. I honestly think their time to compete at the top is near an end they relied too much on free agency the past two years and now they are seeing the reprocussions of that.

check out vy's fumbles.

THE DOLPHINS NEED A NEW LOOK .............

R.BROWN
RICKY
CROWDER
FASANO
HARTLINE ......... THEY ARE ALL BACALA .........

Guys Vince Young is a bargain and you use him in the wildcat. The wildcat didn't work last year because there was not threat to throw the football just think if Vince Young is back there and he is throwing the ball. I like the idea of getting him, he can compete for the job obviously he loses it because his lack of leadership. He becomes the back up and lights a spark for the offense in the wildcat package.

Poizen,

Brown could come back if he's prepared to take a backseat to a couple of the other guys and the price was right but I don't think he can play prime time minutes any more. I'd be fine with him back but not as a starter. The team can't count on him after last year, whether it was the line, the play-calling or whatever. The team needs someone to provide a spark back there.

Incidentally, a guy no one is talking about that I would sign to be a 'bit' player is Kevin Smith. He could still spell the starters and help the team.

GRIAG M HAS VERY SMART WAY AT WRITING VERY GOOD POSTS .......

bigt160,

It would REALLY hurt the Jets if they were to lose Holmes. Hopefully the 'Skins get silly and grab him away from the Jets. Sanchez isn't that good and has only been helped with having a good supporting cast. If he loses a couple of those guys...look out!!

And I agree....their window of opportunity is closing...large!!

Last year the offensive system was not the issue it was the coaching and the playcalling. The Dolphins are going to be in the right system with Dabboll because it's very similar to what they were already running but it will be more electrifying because of Dabboll. He's a fiery guy and will get his guys playing hard for him. Can't wait man GO PHINS!!!!!

bigt160,

I hope you're right. I've held off having an opinion on Daboll so far, because I don't think it's fair to judge him on his time with the Browns. He literally had nothing to work with in Cleveland, except Hillis and he can only take you so far.

BIG160 SOUND VERY CLOSE TO THE GREAT BLOGGER DYINGBREED .......

Stats I guess you win, let's offer a 2nd for Kitna. You got who you want.

RB- Ronnie, Sproles
QB- Bulger, VY or Macnabb (don't give away draft picks!)
TE- Todd Heap
OL- Robert Gallery

Hector, take a bow. You have just be declared an idiot with the rest of this crappy fanbase. BULGER??? McNabb?? Seriously??? What is wrong with you LOSER fans??? Those dudes are old, they are STOP GAPS. Get over yourselves. But yet again, nothing satisfies any of you losers. Here you are knocking the team before they make ANY moves. You are saying they should pick this guy or that one. Please..You guys dont know jack about football.

Orton may not be the best QB out there, but he is good and he is a leader. Stop wanting to go after old guys who havent done squat the last two years.

That is why none of you are GMs, coaches, etc. You are FANS. Your opinons mean nothing.

In fact, since this team never satisfies you, go put your Jets and Pats jerseys back on and root for them. Cuz you are just Dolphin fans in disquise.

BTW, when you put your Jets/Pats jerseys on, dont let the doors hit you in the arse when you leave.

Bye!!!!

VY is a locker room cancer, he cannot read a defense, and quit on his team....twice; other than that, he is great! He will fit in with this group of mis-fits.

I apologize for my post at 10:52. I am sometimes retarted and can't read. Stats was saying he doesn't want Kitna, just that Kitna at 38 was rated higher than Orton last year.

Wikipedia moves faster then ESPN they are both reporting Pat Devlin was signed by the dolphins...

Julie are you a p__sy or just wish you had one to be able to take two at once?

I see you're a tricky on posting on my name Stats. That exactly what you said...no apology. just stupidity on your part.

I'd take Orton or Kitna. Not sure what people were watching last year, but I saw Kitna come in as a backup and look better than the starting QB of that team.

And why WOULDN'T Orton want to come here? Tebow is young, the new Coach likes him, and he's shown promise in the past.

Last time we saw Henne he was on the bench, the Coach KNOWS what he has with him, and obviously if they got Orton they'd be doing anything they could to make sure Henne doesn't start (or at least has to beat out a decent QB to get the start). If I'm Orton, that's a PERFECT situation. Trust and believe, Sparano isn't bringing Orton here to be a backup. He's insurance, that if Henne doesn't get his act together, he's sitting on the bench and Orton takes over.

I happen to believe though that Henne is far enough with the playbook and in the system that it'll be hard for a QB to come in here and take that top spot in 1 month. So I'm expecting Henne to be the starter against NE. If he isn't, many on here will have a lot of 'splainin' to do!!!

Damn Julie is it that time of the month?? :) Lol j/k.

Devlin is a relatively mobile quarterback and has decent arm strength. He will have some trouble making the deep pass or the out-route pass and that is a big concern. He has to fix that if he wants to repeat the success of Flacco in the NFL.

Orton or Kitna? WTF Dude wow man we are trying to get younger and Kitna isn't the answer and neither is giving away draft picks. We need to be like the pats and stock pile them Sh**s.

CRAIG M,

Agree with post at 10:21. Miller would be a much needed addition. Every QB needs a good TE.

Mando,
Can you list the teams and their cap space situation?

Don't give up a draft pick for Orton. We need our draft picks. Get Kitna or Matt Moore instead...And use a high draft pick on a QB next year. Trading draft picks is not the right way to do business in the NFL...Do you ever see New England, Pittsburgh or Baltimore trading draft picks?
