Sunday morning reads and live practice blog here

Allow me to begin this morning by serving you up some reading material as we await the 11 a.m. start to open practice and a live blog of that event:

First, I want to share with you the fact Dolfans are staying away from camp the first two days as I've never seen before in all my years covering the team.

At a time when interest in football is spiking -- NFL Network reports a 288 percent veiwership increase and this blog's page view and unique visitor numbers seem to be on a steroid and HGH cocktail -- local Dolfans are seemingly either disinterested or wary about checking out their team despite the fact the practices are free.

We'll see what the attendance is today and tomorrow night.

Secondly, here are words from the mouth of players or coaches:

Tony Sparano on what he saw in Daniel Thomas his first practice with the Dolphins:  “The biggest thing is the amount of times the guy carried the ball in college and the level of production.  I mean this guy was a big producer in college and really carried it a bunch of times.  I think for a big guy this guy has really soft hands.  He catches the ball well.  In college you didn’t really see Daniel block a whole lot, wasn’t really what he was asked to.  That’s something that we got to get to the bottom of here a little bit fast.  But you did see flashes of physicalness there in the blocking and the things.  But this guys a physical, get your shoulders square runner and I think that’s what we seen.  He has, it’s funny, they talk about home run speed and top gun speed but this guys finished some runs.  So he’s got pretty good speed.  I was excited today, just on a couple of, from early carries to see some of the bounce that he had in his legs for a big man.”

Thomas on whether knowing his assignments is his greatest obstacle in practice so far:  “Not really, the coaches do a really good job of going over our assignments, like I said the toughest thing is just going out here in the heat , and the heat just messes you all up.”

I am not a conspiracy theorist. If someone tells me something, I do my best to tell you, assuming it doesn't break trust with my source. As you know, I've been told that, as of yesterday, the Dolphins were still not giving up on the idea of Kyle Orton. (Or at least adding a legit QB to compete with Chad Henne.)

Other media have reported the team is giving that role to Matt Moore, which if you really think about it, is simply moronic.

Well, Moore was asked if he has been told he was in town to compete for the starting job with Henne:

“You know what … I am going to come in and compete. That’s how it’s going to be. That’s how it is everywhere. As of right now like I said, I am learning. I am going to come in and make all of the throws and make all of the right reads and we will see what happens."

Obviously, Moore has not been told he'll be competing for a starting job. Yet, I have faith the Dolphins will do their best to find that player to do exactly that. Maybe they try Mark Bulger. Maybe they beg the Bengals to trade Carson Palmer one more time. Maybe they cave to Bulger's salary demands.

Point is the quarterback issue is absolutely not resolved.

Talk to you in the comments section for the start of practice.

Dammit, please send us a QB from the gods. At this point we might be wishing for Orton.

We will be begging and caving in to get a QB?
1-7 at home last year?
Pressers like Coach TS's?

Small wonder attendance is down.

Nonetheless, let's see what Mr. Moore's got.

Like it or not, Henne will be our #1 this year. I personaly think he can and will win here. The good news is is that we will all know for sure by years end, Good or bad.

Like DC says, we got fleeced on the Reggie Bush deal.
Wonder what we will give up to get Orton into camp?

Actually, I think that was greg z's post.
Sorry!

everything points to orton. the money is the issue.

henne will start game 1 regardless. get used to it.

If Ronnie or Ricky dont gather much interest, we need to bring back one for cheap....you can never have enough talent in the backfield.

I like Bush if he is used correctly, and we didnt give too much to the Saints for him, but we may have paid him too much...

The fact taht we havent gone after Miller or Boss to upgrade at TE is very annoying. Fasano is nothing without Pennington.....

Our QB situation sucks. Orton would be nice as a stopgap, but he isnt a long-term answer. If we lose with Henne this year, we need to sack up and draft one in the first round for once.

Our defense is going to win us games this year, but our offense will lose us the same amount.

6-10. Puke on my genitals.

I think interest in football is way down all across the board, but in the case of Miami it's pretty simple. This team has been stuck in mediocricy for many years now. At least my 2nd team - the Lions - are turning things around quickly and are built for the long haul.

Still love my Dolphins, but reality sucks for this team. Lots of holes to fill - remember when we knew we would either outscore you or not let you score? Today, we can't be sure of either...ugh.

man the writers in this town hate henne. I mean from some reports he's been ok in camp this year. Listening to these writers you'd think he hasn't made a completion yet in 2 days of practice.

Watching VY on NFL-N.......He stiil see's himself as some kind of star....and can't help but count himself among the talent that he dubs...'"the dream team".....

So much for letting others sing your praises....

Armando face it already Mike Brown is not trading Carson Palmer. Each day that passes by the chances of obtaining Orton dwindle. The season begins in almost 5 weeks and you need to get a new QB in as soon as possible to learn the playbook and new teammates.

I think Miami should go hard now after Zach Miller. I have no clue why they have not at least made contact with him unless they think Clay is the answer although he seems more like an H-Back.

If they sign Miller and Henne still falters this year with what i think would be a solid supporting cast then there would be no more excuses for him and the front office will no for sure it is time to move on from him.

I am seriously thinking of changing my name to 4-12.

Young in Philly! WTF man

JAKE LONG ON PUP? http://www.dolphinstalk.com/

Armando,

Can you give some extra insight about Jake Long being on the PUP list? Is this shoulder, knee or both? How serious is this and do you think he will miss first 6 games?

Thanks!

Tell us how you really feel about it Armando.....

...."Well, Moore was asked if he has been told he was in town to compete for the starting job with Henne":

That was some seriously funny stuff Armando....I didn't know you had a sense of humor.....

i'll be laughing at that all day.....

PLEXICO BURRESS TO THE jets....

The rich get richer....

and they cut release Braylon Edwards....and sign his body-double....

a big tall target to make throws easy for the QB.......

Ever have your car stuck in the mud? 2 wheels want to go but two just spinning in place? That's my visual representation of this FO.

No issues, the dolphins go 3 and 13 with Henne, which will lead to massive coach and front office changes. Next Year, with a "little bit of luck" the phins will have a great defense, o-line, and their QB of the future!

Mando - NE and Gang Green sign people at will.... When will the Phins take a page out of their book??? Sign Zach Miller.. Think about adding another CB, LB, OL, RB and WR.

The jets sign big name after big name...and chase every FA to the best of their CAP ABILITY....

what do they get for it......

2 STRAIGHT AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.....

and us FIN FANS.....begging for their implosion.....pathetic.....whats worse is that we take a we brag about a victory over the jets as if it were a AFC Championship game.....

Guess what????

Its not......

Ask fat rex which games he cares about...a loss to miami in NOV...or that AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN JANUARY......

dam.....

When you set out to replce your coach......YOU REPLACE THE COACH....AT ALL COST.....

You don't give him an extension.....

when you set out to replace your QB.....YOU REPLACE YOUR QB...AT ALL COST.....

You don't go in to the season with your number 2 option.....

dam.....

If Ross (the father) won't commit...

How can we expect Ireland and Sporano (the son's) to commit.....

Like father.....like son.....

While Ross is admiring Jeff Irelands patience, and while Jeff Ireland patiently waits for the Broncos or Kyle to come down to earth, the rest of the league is grabbing all the good players.

Average negotiation length for NE? 2 hours

Averege negotiation length for NY? 1:45 hours

Average negotiation length for MIA? 1 week, 5 days 9 hours and six minutes, while they put everything else on hold in the mean time.

I just want to be clear... Miami will give up how many 2nd round picks for crap QBs, but won't give up what it takes for a starting caliber QB in Orton? They won't pay him for multiple years because they aren't sure?? Di they really think the QB problem will be solved by 2012?!?!

And then they want the fans to come to camp.... Too many crap years of crap management...

anybody reading what you write about the fins would understand why nobody wants to go to practice, 95% is negative, fair enough you should say it as you see it, but it's not gonna get anybody on the bleachers, no.s might be on the increase shortly though given your updates from practice so far

only wins will increase interest in the fins

primary concern is still rb stock

2nd concern is ts and irelands seeming inability to assess new talent - they seem to be stuck in dallas in 2007

ok matt moore might turn it around BUT he might not

how high on irelands list of qb's was he?

I fully expect Ireland to commot to Orton on 4 Aug.....probably a 5 year deal at around 6 mil a year.....dfaft Orton's replacement in the up comming draft...and let him learn the ropes from the bench....

That is fore-thought......

but if the last 24 years holds true.....we will draft the best Lineman available.....

2nd concern is ts and irelands seeming inability to assess new talent - they seem to be stuck in dallas in 2007
--------------------------------------------------------

Wolf....good post.....liked the above line the best....

and its funny because its true.....

So if the Fins are still in the running for another QB would they cut/trade Devlin? Didn't Moore get some guaranteed money? Would they carry four QBs?

Simon Says.....@ 9:43...funny.....

kris, good post at 9:38. thats why the fans are staying away. we dont trust the FO; the gm,the coach or the owner.

simon at 9:43 good post, very true i'm afraid. i'm sick about the bush deal. sproles was much better option or even mcgahee! we had needs to fill but too much time spent on one player who we didnt get.

I wonder what percentage of FA's or trades this FO has done have roots back to their Dallas days. It's like they have a fear of leaving home, constantly need the comfort of someone from their original family.

mando, here's EsPN's repoort on Patriots practice attendence:

Crowds are light. For the first weekend of training camp, on a beautiful day, I was really surprised at how many empty spots there were in the bleachers and on the hill around the practice fields. Part of it might be the "lockout effect", another part of it might be the fluid nature of the schedule and how the session wasn't announced until late Friday.

jets stole plax at 3 mil for one year; ireland's probably still sleeping. he can read about it. forget about us taking any risks. we want guaranteed mediocre.

I am beginning not to like this Season.

why do people think buress is a good signing? he was already losing a step before he went to the jets. I think the jets got worst by signing buress over edwards

Mando! We need something to be positive about... Where are you with good news??

Latest in the NFL rumor mill

How is it that a team with the most uninspiring QB in NFL history fails to upgrade the position because it's waiting on another QB no other team in the NFL wants? Makes you wonder.

Here's a thought. Offer the Bungles Henne and a third round pick. Henne can start now, and we get a FAR better QB. That would scare the crap out of Rex & Bellicheat. Sign Leonard Davis and we've got a real shot.

I don't know why the big hangup on ortons contract.demands? He surely is better than henne at this point. Sign him for 4-5 years. Years 1 and 2 he's the unquestioned starter. Year 3 he's the backup to the guy you draft in april. Year 4 he'd cut. Where's the problem? Unless this front office still thinks henne may be the better qb and beat orton out. If that's the case then don't even make the trade at all and go with henne. You can't be halfway with your qb position. It disrupts the entire team

Greg Z: McGahee over Bush? Come on now.

Jonny B. Why in the world would the Bengals want that trade? You are offering a king a rotten apple for his virgin daughter. Nice try.

boulder, plax didnt cost any players/draft picks. he's 6'5" and a monster in the red zone. any qb would love that experienced receiver to throw to. he turned the pats db inside while he caught the winning pass in the super bowl on a outside fade. only question now is rust.

You know Mr. Ross promised a winner and if he fails to get the job done...and bring miami the qb that it deserves then we all as in DOLFANS should all do whatever it takes to show Mr. Ross how we feel ... I mean come since Marino we never went and got that qb...there has been so many rookie qbs we couldve had and passed on in the draft and so many vets we couldve had aka Mr Brees

Who cares about burress? He hasn't played in 2 years. He'd be a 5th wr on this team

Boulder.....

In regards to Plexico....its a good signing because he is 6'5 (huge target).....

I don't think he was ever know to be a burner....just a solid reciever....he's not a HOF....be he better than Average by a long shot.....

He gives the jets the exact same type of reciever that they just loss....in terms of body type...and probably speed....

He has playoff....and SB experince......

He catches the football....consitently.....unlike Hartline...at this point in his career.....

He is an instant upgrade for a one year period....and our recievers could learn alot from him......expecially wallace and moore....

jsneaky, my point was if we needed a rb,mcgahee is an every down back who is a baller. he runs hard, has attitude, commands half the salary and doesnt cost the fins 2 draft picks and a young free safety(amaya)!!!

No wonder fans aren't coming out. Look who's in charge, the thee stooges. If you really think Henne is the answer you are in the same dream world as the thee stooges. Ross, Matt Moore is Henne's competion? Are you kidding me? Then you make statements, of all the QB's available not one of them is a an upgrade over Henne?? Are you serious?? Do you really think we will beat NE on opening night?? Next game is Houston who owns us?? We're done. Dolphins will be lucky if they win 4 games at max with deer in the headlighs Henne. Sell the team Ross.

Any qb's available from Canada??

I liked Maghee in his day, but now he is spent. Not worth it. 2nd string at best now.

Mark in Toronto...

Hartline IMO...has proven to be a less impressivie version of Bess.....I would rather see him as a slot guy out quicking everybody....(welker style)...on thrid down....rather than him be the starting #2......

I thin Plaxico easily takes his spot....

Look for Moore or Wallce to unseat Hartline this year...

carl, mcgahee is a baller with enough left in the tank and can block. bush is no better and we gave up too much as usual. mcgahee is better value imo. we will see.

All we need is for Henne to be decent not a hero...if he manages to do that, all you guys would jump back on his peanuts....a lot of people are saying that a lot of qb's have turned it around in their third year...with Henne, I just don't know....I simply can't trust a guy that snitches on himself....like he did when he announced to the whole f'ing universe that he and his OC were still in contact when they were not supposed to...wow....nuff said

http://sportnewsmonster.blogspot.com/

Carl....

Maghee spent the last 2 season's backing up Ray Rice (i live in Baltimore).....

He is Hungry...and rested in my opinion....and when he got in the game he ran with a lot of 'tude'......

This year when he got his chance to run the rock...he reminded me a lot of Marion Barber.....that kind of attitude....
