Sunday morning reads and live practice blog here

Allow me to begin this morning by serving you up some reading material as we await the 11 a.m. start to open practice and a live blog of that event:

First, I want to share with you the fact Dolfans are staying away from camp the first two days as I've never seen before in all my years covering the team.

At a time when interest in football is spiking -- NFL Network reports a 288 percent veiwership increase and this blog's page view and unique visitor numbers seem to be on a steroid and HGH cocktail -- local Dolfans are seemingly either disinterested or wary about checking out their team despite the fact the practices are free.

We'll see what the attendance is today and tomorrow night.

Secondly, here are words from the mouth of players or coaches:

Tony Sparano on what he saw in Daniel Thomas his first practice with the Dolphins:  “The biggest thing is the amount of times the guy carried the ball in college and the level of production.  I mean this guy was a big producer in college and really carried it a bunch of times.  I think for a big guy this guy has really soft hands.  He catches the ball well.  In college you didn’t really see Daniel block a whole lot, wasn’t really what he was asked to.  That’s something that we got to get to the bottom of here a little bit fast.  But you did see flashes of physicalness there in the blocking and the things.  But this guys a physical, get your shoulders square runner and I think that’s what we seen.  He has, it’s funny, they talk about home run speed and top gun speed but this guys finished some runs.  So he’s got pretty good speed.  I was excited today, just on a couple of, from early carries to see some of the bounce that he had in his legs for a big man.”

Thomas on whether knowing his assignments is his greatest obstacle in practice so far:  “Not really, the coaches do a really good job of going over our assignments, like I said the toughest thing is just going out here in the heat , and the heat just messes you all up.”

I am not a conspiracy theorist. If someone tells me something, I do my best to tell you, assuming it doesn't break trust with my source. As you know, I've been told that, as of yesterday, the Dolphins were still not giving up on the idea of Kyle Orton. (Or at least adding a legit QB to compete with Chad Henne.)

Other media have reported the team is giving that role to Matt Moore, which if you really think about it, is simply moronic.

Well, Moore was asked if he has been told he was in town to compete for the starting job with Henne:

“You know what … I am going to come in and compete. That’s how it’s going to be. That’s how it is everywhere. As of right now like I said, I am learning. I am going to come in and make all of the throws and make all of the right reads and we will see what happens."

Obviously, Moore has not been told he'll be competing for a starting job. Yet, I have faith the Dolphins will do their best to find that player to do exactly that. Maybe they try Mark Bulger. Maybe they beg the Bengals to trade Carson Palmer one more time. Maybe they cave to Bulger's salary demands.

Point is the quarterback issue is absolutely not resolved.

Talk to you in the comments section for the start of practice.

I forgot Marion Barber was still out there. I'd be looking at him along with with Ronnie as another back that should be a part of things this year. Yes his numbers were down last year but that Dallas team under Phillip was a joke. Either one of these guys would be ideal to what we already have.

I dont know which is more "Inconsistent".

fields has to be reallllllly bad for the broncos who had the worst defense to give up on him..

Craig, Barber is a Bears player now

Im starting to think many people here have never watched a football game before... You can not place all the blame for last season on the QB, some yes, all NO. Our offensive philosophy stink stank stunk. Offensive line was not good, couldn't run the ball. They played for FGs, even on the rare occassion when field position was good. How many time did Henne come out on 2nd and 6-7 in favor of the wildcat, and end up in 3rd and 10. Know what happens on 3rd and 10? YOU ARE PREDICTABLE, 1 Dimesional. Special teams was god awful, couldnt give the O field position or keep the other team from getting good position (or scoring outright). Our D, while statistically pretty good, dropped 32 interceptions last yr (half a dozen should have been TDs). Elite defenses don't do that. You CANNOT ask your offense to go 80+ consistently and score TDs. NO QB aside from 3 - 4 in the league can do that. Too many things can happen along the way to kill a drive. With that said we were 7-9 last year, very difficult schedule, screwed good in the pitt game, STs implosion against NE in week 3, 2pt conv away in week 4.

sure marshall will say his disorder is what is making him get alot of penalties this year when he gets pissed at henne for missing him again and again

The Broncos are not expected to bring back free agent DT Ronald Fields.
Fields, 29, didn't help himself by getting arrested last May for "waving a gun at a nightclub," and went on to struggle in a rotational role during the season. The Denver Post speculates that all of the team's defensive tackle losses might mean Alabama's Marcell Dareus and Auburn's Nick Fairley are "under heavy consideration" for the No. 2 pick in the draft.

Mel Ochocinco World Be Fed Well Jr,

The comment that you are asking about was made by Omar Kelly. He said it on the Michael Irvin show this past Friday. He said it without hesitation and also said tghat it would not surprise him if Moore beat out Henne because it really would not take much to beat out Henne.

If Henne going into his 4th year is not CLEARLY outplaying Moore and Devlin, an undrafted free agent...how can they even entertain the thought of keeping Henne on the roster? Mystified I am.

Ronald Fields DT from Denver. Weren't Denver looking to ADD Dlinemen? Is this another move by Ireland to put heat on Denver to move Orton? Could this be setting up a move of Langford or Merling to Denver? Interesting..

OmarKelly Omar Kelly
I'm no longer going to rule out the possibility of Jared Odrick starting. I just saw him destroy Richie Incognito (who has lil help at LT)

Chad Henne just hit Anthony Fasano in the seam for a 20-yard gain. Robot celebrates. Emotion chip is working.

Daniel Thomas doing some pushups after a bounce passes off his fingertips during team passing drill» Well deserved push ups

Tom Bradstater connected on a decent 20-yard pass to Brett Brackett, who cut up the seam. I like.

So Jason you saw all of Thomas's 1600 yard at KSU and think average at best huh. Then why was he rated the 2nd best back in the draft. I guess you have super scout written all over you.

merlin to denver with henne for orton

I missed that. When did that happen? Geez....I think Ireland is underestimating the need for another back...poor!!

I wasnt arguing your point. Youre absolutely correct! I was just stating if Henne's jekyll-hyde we may have to run 95% of our plays and avg at least 4yds a carry to be a very consistent offense. That's highly unlikely.

Incomplete passes produce 3rd and longs. An abundance of 3rd and longs will create an abundance of stalled offensive drives.

Rookie OLBer Quinton Spears just sacked Tom Brandstater.

CB Nate Ness, a former safety, just popped Daniel Thomas one good time on a pass in the flat.

I have yet to see this offense scre a TD in team drills. First team I mean.

daboll's offense was not that impressive.. he had great trickery, but his offense was ranked as low as Hennings. the only thing i wonder can daboll's offense be better with better talent.

Merling has been getting work at NT, by the way.

Barber is just a name. He averaged 3.3 a carry last year.

Micheal, the top three rated backs in last years draft by all scouts were Ingram, Leshoure and Williams. Nobody had Thomas in the top three.

A.J. Edds has been getting first-team reps today. Not every single one, but some.

Merling at NT? This is usually what this coaching staff does to players on thier way out!

Doesn't anyone realize that there is no QB coming this season to take this disfunctional team to the playoffs? The QB of the future will come from the draft, once there is a regime in place that realizes this. Get ready for a long season.

thanks for the updates on Edds and Merling

Two year, five million dollar contract for Barber. Come on!! We couldn't get in on this? Running out of options here for another back and when this team is faced with injuries in November and the guys aren't getting it done we can say 'I told ya'.

Let's Cleveland's to[ 3 QB's Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, and Seneca Wallace. Heed anybody say more.

we have enough running backs thomas, bush, sheets, hilliard. and there will be someone out there we could always grab.

Mike Mayock had Thomas as his number 2 back. Is he? Don't know. I would have had him lower but Mayock does know a thing or two about guys coming into the league.

michael, the sitaution last year in Dallas under Phillips was a joke. I still think Barber has something left in the tank and would have helped this team. That's the kind of move the Pats would have made.

Armando (@ 11:13 AM)

Some of those missing fans might realize that
the 'level' of football on display is still several days away from being any good. It's a consequence from the work stoppage.

or maybe...

They're still not convinced that the new owner knows exactly what he's doing. They have lost a notch of enthusiasm and trust. They're unsure of whether he would rather produce a lucrative 'Entertainment Package' than stabilize a good team that competes each year for Superbowls.

(...and then there's the sobering dose of
Business Reality
that a Jets jersey ACTUALLY made its way into the Dolphin's pro shop.)

Then again...a few, Dolfans might possibly be overwhelmed and distracted by the looming National Debt Crisis...

Who knows?

If Orton signed TODAY he still wouldnt be able to practice till the 4th.

Orton will get signed. Ireland is not risking his career on Henne. No way.

He is just waiting it out so he doesnt have to overpay like the cards did.

Barber? What part of there wont be enough carries for 3 rb's that Armando mentioned you guys dont understand?

For one, he wont play for the vet minimum. Two, even if he does, you're paying him $910,000 just in case someone gets injured.

Bryan Cox is coaching Cam Wake on hand work. Valuable addition as a coach, in my opinion.

I recall Henne missing passes and clearly he needs to improve touch and deep passes.

I also recall Henne moving the ball effectively on the rare occasions when he was allowed to pass the ball on 1st down.

I dont know what QB would not have looked schizophrenic when when only allowed 5 step drops, behind a line that could not create running lanes or pass protect while playing for a very tight HC and a very predictable OC.

I hear ya Craig. Bring in Ronnie. Make Thomas earn his carries.

ireland will stay either way Ross likes him, Sporano is gone.

this is great, when henne can't get marshall the ball one of his pesonalities will punch him in the face!

maybe that is what henne needs to wake up.

when u have the worst qb and worst ocord in nfl u have no shot

We all hope for improvement with Henne and the offense all the way up to the OC. It has to be a well coordinated effort all the way to the top. Agreed?

Marshall catches nice post pattern pass from henne. Got between Smith and Clemons.

You're somewhat right NFL.com had him # 3.

Check down to Thomas. Honestly, the offense looks practicly the same to mae in what they are running as last year.

henning was a great OC when Pennington was the primary.. and now He was the worst OC ever... hmmm

Nic Grigsby fumbles but falls on it.

Devlin throws a wobbler that Marlon Moore bobbles and catches as he's falling down. Defender gives up on tackle. Moore, surprised he has the ball, gets up and heads for the end zone.

Ugliest TD pass ever seen.

Maycock had him at 3

1.Mark Ingram, Alabama
2.Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech
3.Daniel Thomas, Kansas State
4.Mikel Leshoure, Illinois
5.Kendall Hunter, Okie St.

Ronnie played like he had heavy boots on last year. No spark, went down easy, many one arm tackles. And he wasn't injured. Don't think he earned any more playing time.

i guess they cant show everything to the publc, at least lets hope this is the reason for the similarities

yeah absolutely agreed. I was not at all happy about the Daboll signing.

I want to see the offense evolve into a Eagles or Colts style passing attacking, aggressive offense.

However, we have Daboll and hopefully the offense is going to look alot different.

Hey Craig the problem with Barber is his running style. He just has taken too many hard hits. That's why Earl Campbell didn't last. Barber is 29, and on the down side of his career.

That's end of practice guys. I'll be tweeting the press conferences so head to my twitter account for that.

i think the dolphins wanted leshoure better, more physical.

IMO, say no to Barber. The rb we're most likely to lose to injury is Bush. That means speed. We need to keep an extra speedback in our hats, not a slower plodder like Barber.

We already have an upgraded version of that in the rookie Thomas. We need to keep some extra speed on the back burner as insurance to Bush.

thanks mando..

tight work mando.

He wont tell you that you can listent to and see those press confernces live at miamidolphins.com

I understand your wearing mutiple hats....but excellent job.....

Just FYI about Moore...he has better career stats than Kevin Kolb and he goT them on a team in shambles. So, Mando, back off and see what happens...
