Sunday morning reads and live practice blog here

Allow me to begin this morning by serving you up some reading material as we await the 11 a.m. start to open practice and a live blog of that event:

First, I want to share with you the fact Dolfans are staying away from camp the first two days as I've never seen before in all my years covering the team.

At a time when interest in football is spiking -- NFL Network reports a 288 percent veiwership increase and this blog's page view and unique visitor numbers seem to be on a steroid and HGH cocktail -- local Dolfans are seemingly either disinterested or wary about checking out their team despite the fact the practices are free.

We'll see what the attendance is today and tomorrow night.

Secondly, here are words from the mouth of players or coaches:

Tony Sparano on what he saw in Daniel Thomas his first practice with the Dolphins:  “The biggest thing is the amount of times the guy carried the ball in college and the level of production.  I mean this guy was a big producer in college and really carried it a bunch of times.  I think for a big guy this guy has really soft hands.  He catches the ball well.  In college you didn’t really see Daniel block a whole lot, wasn’t really what he was asked to.  That’s something that we got to get to the bottom of here a little bit fast.  But you did see flashes of physicalness there in the blocking and the things.  But this guys a physical, get your shoulders square runner and I think that’s what we seen.  He has, it’s funny, they talk about home run speed and top gun speed but this guys finished some runs.  So he’s got pretty good speed.  I was excited today, just on a couple of, from early carries to see some of the bounce that he had in his legs for a big man.”

Thomas on whether knowing his assignments is his greatest obstacle in practice so far:  “Not really, the coaches do a really good job of going over our assignments, like I said the toughest thing is just going out here in the heat , and the heat just messes you all up.”

I am not a conspiracy theorist. If someone tells me something, I do my best to tell you, assuming it doesn't break trust with my source. As you know, I've been told that, as of yesterday, the Dolphins were still not giving up on the idea of Kyle Orton. (Or at least adding a legit QB to compete with Chad Henne.)

Other media have reported the team is giving that role to Matt Moore, which if you really think about it, is simply moronic.

Well, Moore was asked if he has been told he was in town to compete for the starting job with Henne:

“You know what … I am going to come in and compete. That’s how it’s going to be. That’s how it is everywhere. As of right now like I said, I am learning. I am going to come in and make all of the throws and make all of the right reads and we will see what happens."

Obviously, Moore has not been told he'll be competing for a starting job. Yet, I have faith the Dolphins will do their best to find that player to do exactly that. Maybe they try Mark Bulger. Maybe they beg the Bengals to trade Carson Palmer one more time. Maybe they cave to Bulger's salary demands.

Point is the quarterback issue is absolutely not resolved.

Talk to you in the comments section for the start of practice.

Simon Says, Just a tidbit of Brady's scouting report coming out of college:

Accuracy: Brady’s strength is his accuracy. He is known best for his touch, throwing a very catchable ball. Receivers like working with Brady because he puts the ball in the right spots and will not hang them out to dry. He will occassionally float a pass high when his back foot is not set. Brady does not throw well on the run and must set up to fire deep. Brady has struggled at times with his intermediate accuracy and does not throw well if forced to move to his left.

Arm Strength: Initially thought to be Brady’s weakness, especially when entering the NFL. Brady has the ability to throw deep and can stretch a defense vertically.

Seems Brady's armstrength was doubted coming out of college too. Accept for Brady's inaccuracies throwing on the run, He and Devlin's pre nfl scouting reports are very similar.

Given a choice of 2 qb with similar stats, I would take Sanchez over Henne no question!

May the best QB lead us to the promised land!

Not the best D-line, who's better? We got 2 guys not starting who would start for 20 other teams. So who is better. Jets, no. Pats, no. It's not bias. I know the team, and I know football. So who's better? Ravens? Bears? Steelers? No. No. No.

The more Devlin continues to turn heads in preseason, the more eyes will continue to roll at Henne. Bet on it!

disregarding the actual starting qb for us the next 3 years and using the pats as the gold standard team that we have to beat to get happy(a good post-season run)

if we had say a top 5-10 qb statwise and a d like last year or better, we're actually pretty close to taking them 50% of the time

i think if you're gonna beat the pats improving you're d more than your o may be the way to go if u had to pick one and thats what ireland/sparano and nolan have done

this year if we have an imp running game(big question mark) and qb play (big question mark)

we'd be very close, we seem to have a good group of wr and ol but the wr and ol still need to step up their play

all together within the next 3 years we're set to seriously compete with the patsies and obviusly the jets (who WILL slide a bit this season)

its probably a resurgent bills that we'll be worried about in 2014!

We finished 2010 rated 5th in the league. Based on that I'll call our d-line a "top 5" in the nfl defensive front.

Jump on board Pat Devlins train. This kid is out to prove something. And he plays for us. I could not stay in my seat.

My beef today is with craig m and all these other pansys optimist's i keep hearing on these blogs everyday claiming who real fans are etc.. In my opinion craig you are not a TRUE fan you may love the dolphins but your type are not true hears why:

1. Other than the fact you love the team why all the OPTIMISM why? What has this team or FO done to garner so much positive thoughts and optimism in the last 10 years I challenge you to give me a real factual reason!!!

2. When and why is it wrong for a fan to question or down right hate something their team has done or doing? For example, anyone who watches the dolphins regularly like myself havent missed a game since 1999 knows that henne sucks period.. We know that sparano is conservative and plays not to lose as a result we mostly lose. We know that ross only cares about marketing the team. We know ireland goes against the grain and never gets the right LOGICAL pieces the team needs. These are facts undisputable facts!!! So y am i not a true fan because rather than ignoring reality I chose to shed light on it in hopes that the right people can see it and fix it??? Please explain that.

3. Finally we have an owner, who sells parts of the team to celebrities to boost ticket sales but will not commit to building a winning team! We have a coach who went out and got the only worse OC than us to lead us in an offensive changing year!! LOL sorry thats just to funny! We have a QB who just sucks i dont need to be specific! And by skipping a whole lot of other BS that went on with this regime we know have a coach who FISTPUMPS and celebrates for FGs instead of TD's!!!!!! And you wonder why TRUE fin fans are upset?????

I think your are way out of line and more out of touch with reality and personaly I dont care about being optimistic or pessimistic anymore I just want the phins to compete again you know like play to win, throw the damn ball downfield, take chances and risks to win, you know just the basics in winning football!!! Call me an unloyal or unpatriotic all you want that to me is just your inability to accept reality and maybe a touch of anger incorporated.

There are 4 afc teams who could keep us out of the playoffs. 2 are in the afc east(JETS/PATS) and 2 in the afc north(RAVEN/STEELERS.

There will be 2 division winners in each of these divisions and the 2nd place teams will be the afc wildcard favorites. So we are at least vying with 2 of these teams of these 2 divisions just to make a wildcard playoff appearance.

I'm on! I'd be thrilled if Devlin made us forget Henne and Orton!

Storm Shadow.

Thanks for making my night. That was GREAT. Post 3:27. High Five.............

There will be 2 division winners in each of these divisions

Nobody has annointed Sanchez anything. It's widely thought throughout that he needs to pick his game up to have continued success.

The thing is though, what the stats don't show, is that luck or no luck, Sanchez consistently makes a lot of clutch throws with the game on the line, and Henne wilts. Sanchez rises to the occasion, Henne looks helpless. I wish it weren't so, but it is.

Appreciate the first hand witness report. How did his long ball look if there were any?

The Devlin scout report, was just throwing out information for information's sake. I don't know at what point or age a QB's arm strength reaches its max potential. I will say that I looked at three scout reports and every one said he struggled with the mid to deep ball. If that can be improved, great.

And yes, we have a top 5 Defense! Our 6 deep DL is the best in the NFL!

I will post what i see. And bring it here. Today was a good day. Big Time.

Storm Shadow,

I posted to CraigM while he was here. He's unhappy fans feel disappointed, then when seeing fans feel optimistic about Devlin's play he gouged us for that too.

Seems he hates seeing fans disappointed or optimistic unless we're all seeing it exactly his way. A decade of disappointments and everyone has a right to feel as they have witnessed.

I would side with CraigM about the pessimistic views if we were coming off 2nd rd playoffs, or a championship appearance. But for now the pessimism is totally legit.

Maybe we all need to get checked for BPD..LOL

Could Devlin be another Brady in the making? Maybe, maybe not, but the path the nfl seems to have similarity:

Tom Brady
In 2000, the New England Patriots drafted Brady in the sixth round (199 overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. Brady who had been expecting to be drafted in the third or forth was tremendously disappointed with being drafted so late in the draft. However, as disappointed as Brady was at getting drafted in the sixth round - he may have been luckily to have been drafted at all. One scout wrote about Brady prior to the draft in a scouting report that Tom had "Poor build, very skinny and narrow, lacks mobility and the ability to avoid the rush, lacks a really strong arm."

Especiallly this part:

When Brady arrived at the Foxboro, Massachusetts in the summer of 2000, the Patriots at the time already had three quarterbacks on the roster so Brady didn't have a guarantee of even making the team, but he ended up played well in preseason and training camp and won the third quarterback roster spot.

storm shadow, anyone of us optimists could have written your last paragraph (or agree with its sentiment)

the previous 3/4 u r perfectlty entitled to - your opinion

the fins still have more than 2 fans

all of whom r entitled to have their own opinion

my understanding of this blog is that it is is a place to express opinion and debate it

i don't mind u telling me u don't like my opinion or diagree with it for very valid, even (well) argued reasons, but its up to me to decide whether i change my opinion

Long on PUP list, that's not good news

I respect what you say. Because you don't go out of your way to atack people like that JERK craig m. I wish he could see my MIDDLE FINGER.

DB, come on my man, you totally left out the big difference between sanchez and Henne.

Sanchez'z coaches have his back no matter what. Sanchez last year blew two games in reach by throwing int's and missing a wide open b edwards on a 4th down. After the game his coach said, he gets some, he misses some, he is our guy and i get his back. then his coach went and sucked toes.

Our coach screams and yells at his qb for any mistake, never claims to have his back ect...

that is the big difference that led to the disparity.

you and others will disagree because your convinced it is all henne, but what i am saying is facts.

If Henne had his coach telling him i have you back, youe our guy, a different henne would be playing for us.

We are a fussy bunch, aren't we? Mando must feel like a zookeeper sometimes. It's no wonder he doesn't spend much time on here.

God help us if Long is not better soon. The QB won't matter much without him anchoring the OL.

I am sorry, and i am kicking the crap out of a dead horse, but all of you Henne bashers need to understand, NO qb will flourish in this system being coached the way Henne was coached. Pennington led us to that great season, THE FIRST YEAR OF THE SYSTEM. Came back next year and was 0-3. Doesnt that tell you something?

Don't like Henne if you dont want to, but don't blame him for last year, there was far more things that went wrong before he did.

Im going to keep my opinions whether anyone else agrees or not. So I believe I should allow others to have that same right. CraigM get a little upset when you dont see things exactly the way he does.

Still I welcome him here becuase he has a right to be here too. With all us its what you see is what you get. None of us are parts of the "BORG" collective.

What is up with long ? Does anyone know.

Not good news about Long, the o-line will define if this team has a 4,7 or 11 win seasn...

please explain the BORG collective

If Sanchez went 1-7 at home, and played as dismal as Henne the last several games, would Ryan 'have his back'? Your 'have his back' comment is totally subjective to things none of us could know anything about. Some coaches bark, others don't. Its the NFL. If any QB can't handle a shout how are they going to handle blitzing linebackers?

Secondly, just because people are negative on Henne, I see nobody ever claiming last year was all Hennes fault. They just doubt rightfully whether he can be the 'guy'. Just the same, I don't think one can say it was all Hennings fault.

Glad to see you, Whats not good news ? Do you know ? Did not see ( long ) out there today.

Rex had even stated PUBLICLY in 2009 he thought of pulling Sanchez.

Ive made many past posts its not all Henne's fault. We were an entire colage of inefficiency as a unit in 2010 all the way up to the OC Henning. My greatest pessimism about Henne himself is that the bigger the moment got, the greter he seemed to shrink.

Is this correctable? Yes. But Henne needs to starting "OWNING" the qb position, not just merely playing it. This is what I believe all fans want to see from Henne.

"OWN" the freaking position Henne, dammit!

henne is horrible no matter how u spin it

Did you read Armandos live blog comments today? He said Devlin looked so far the best QB out there. What does that say when a rookie undrafted FA is doing better than your starter going into his 4th year?

The reports from Denver were that Orton was vastly superior to to Tebow in practice. Henne should be vastly superior to Moore and Devlin, but he wasn't, as reports say.

People have good reason to doubt Henne considering that alone.

We are going to sit here and do nothing the rest of FA, are you kidding me.....

Use the money and sign a freeking TE, Heap is gone already, but the rest are there

Go ahead and sign a G and get some balls and say Edwards

We just sit and do nothing because we think are players are good?, they suck, go and get some players to push what we have

Kinda hard to "own" what you just don't seem to have.

New blog up..more problems with the oline...

Dying Breed,

Was Henne not the one who got everyone to practice???, Yes

It's the second freaking day of training camp, give the guy a minute.....I saw douche bag Mando say he sucked on Saturday, but saw others say he was fine....it's training camp, maybe the other guys sucked cause they have not been with him, i.e Matshall......

Devlin, really, every other team passed on him, he is a project at best

We need to go sign more players, we cant just sit here with what we have done and say were ready to go, that is pathetic

new blog up

Amando says
"Maybe they beg the Bengals to trade Carson Palmer one more time"..

That reeks of desperation and is reminiscent of Wannstedt/Spielman....A better way of putting it is maybe they wait out the Bengals and convince them to change their minds. They have Henne. They can deal from a position of strength. They are not desperate. I agree they should pursue Orton or Palmer but always from a position of strength. Particularly now when all other teams have filled their QB needs.

No one's said Henne has been terrible. They havent said his play has been superior neither.
Henne's suppose to be mark all of the other qb's in camp should be shooting for. Not Pat Devlin.

Henne hasnt been absolutely terrible in camp but he hasnt been consistently superlative neither. Who cares if he got everyone to practice during the lockout. Heck, my grandmother could have done that and Im sure she sucks far worse at qb than Henne ever could have imagined.

Mando posted his blog on the first day of camp saying it was ugly, he was the only one who said that. To me he never tells us anything we don't already know

My point about getting guys to practice is at least he is showing leadership skills.....which was one of his biggest issues

Not a huge fan of Henne, but that is all we really have right now

Why we are not signing other players right now just boggles my mind, we have the $$ to sign either a G, WR or a TE, and we sit here and do nothing, zippo, why??

i have watched henne in training camp practice for 3 straight years. i decided not to attend this year. i can say there was little if any improvement from year to year in camp from henne. he's clearly not a leader and has never "won" the position. dansby says the jurys still out on chad. the qb job was given to henne because the regime made him a 2nd round pick and they didnt want egg on their face. henne cant take the offense down the field in practice; thigpen could and did.

they found the cause of marshalls borderline personality disorder; its chad henne!

Thigpen sucked, period, he is at best a backup QB in this league.....When he was given the chance, he was worse then bad....what did he too with his chance agains the Bears, ZERO POINTS

The Bills can have him, and if they want they can have Bannister too

All week long, dedicated Fins fans have been making comments, providing their wisdom and even, their pleas for a variety of signings.

Friends, there is one common thread on each and every comment....Ross, Ireland and Sparano are not listening and do not care, what we, the true fans of the Dolphins think!

Unfortunately, our long run of mediocre performance will continue and if Stephen Ross is an honest man and really does care about winning, then he will do something now. Having a pocket full of cash when there are still a number of proven performers out there does not demonstarte to me that his priorities are in the right place. Maybe, Mr. Ross you can do us true fans a favor, sell the team...please.....maybe someone like Dan Marino or Jimmy Johnson could take us out of this funk.

I never thought that we would be viewed in the same way that consistent bottom feeders like the Browns, Bengals and Raiders are seen.

Please....Mr. Ross....sell the team and let me and my fellow Dolfans go back to enjoying football season!

he already signed with the Broncos on Saturday, get with it, or then again you knew that, which then I will say why did you bother to talk about him here?

My gut tells me after week 3 preseaon..Merling and a 4th round upgrading to a 3rd for Orton.

Randy, what good would that be??? You dont bring a QB in 2 weeks before season starts. Won't happen

This seems to be the exact same Henne who quarterbacked at Michigan. Sure he'll give you abreviated periods of pure greatness. But when that isnt happening you get many more periods of "just plain average" to "wtf".

My personal gripe with Henne is that it seems the bigger the moment becomes, the more unresponsive he becomes. No critical 1st downs, completions, or td's when absolutely needed most.

Hene seems to be great when zero is on the line. But he seems to be greatly disappointing when there is.

Is ALoco in jail? Not one post from him today. LOL...

That's a lack of trust by the regime.....when the game is on the line they run for 1 yd, run for 1 yd and it's 3rd and 8 every time. How about being more creative and mix it up a little

He will be the QB week 1, let's see what happens with the new offense, maybe some more creative calling????? we are so darn predictable all the time

It's easy to blitz by the way when it's 3rd and 8 all the darn time

Dolphins sign Ronald fields. Hey Guys.

Ronald Fields....a true household name....

Unfortunately, he is not Zach Miller, Braylon Edwards or Ahmad Bradshaw!

Toilet Bowl, I mean Super Bowl, here we come!

Kevin Barnett signs with the Bills.

Umm, they signed Nick Barnett
