Tyler Thigpen gone, message sent to Chad Henne

[First off, thank you for a record day on the blog yesterday. Incredible how a little actual football news turns this blog into a monster. GRRRRR! Anyway, continue to stay here or return here often throughout the day as the Dolphins continue to operate in stealthy fashion while folks like me chase what's going on from other less-than-perfect, agenda-driven angles. What can I say? You get shut out, you do what you have to do.]

Now to the news and analysis:

Tyler Thigpen is a Buffalo Bill. He has agreed to join that team in return for a three-year contract that gives him a chance to compete for a starting job against Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick will win that competition. The deal sends Thigpen packing after a year and a half in Miami and reunites him with Buffalo coach Chan Gailey, who was Thigpen's offensive coordinator in Kansas City in 2008 when Thigpen enjoyed his best NFL season.

Even though the Dolphins showed casual interest in keeping Thigpen, I do not see this as a big loss, folks.

I know many of you thought Thigpen had potential to chase a starting job. Me? I shared that thinking until he got on the field in 2009 against Pittsburgh and last year against Chicago and was ineffective both times. Thigpen has the gift of adding spark. You see it when he enters a game and the pace picks up.

But Thigpen also is cursed with inconsistency. He'll lead an energy-lifting touchdown drive on one possession. And throw an interception and go three-and-out on the next two possessions.

Thigpen lovers will say that inconsistency in Miami was a result of his little opportunity to work with the first-team offense. Great, so explain his similar inconsistency in Kansas City when he was the starter for 11 games.

So the Dolphins will have a new backup quarterback for 2011.

They're also trying to add a new starting quarterback for 2011.

Hear that, Chad Henne? Hear that Henne supporters?

I have confirmed that Miami is heavily involved in trying to add Kyle Orton while various reports which I've not been able to independently confirm have linked the Dolphins to Matt Hasselbeck. I can see the Orton thing. I don't understand the Hasselbeck fling one bit.

[7:45 AM update: The Hasselbeck fling is not a thing in Miami after all. He is going to the Tennesse Titans. That obviously limits the Dolphins to a focus on Orton with a possible fallback being Marc Bulger or Vince Young.]

Orton is better than Chad Henne, or at least has been the past two years. Is he the man? Is he a franchise quarterback? No. Does he have a superstar arm? Can he escape the rush and turn disaster into dynamics? No.

But he's better than Chad Henne.

And right now, that seems to be good enough for the Dolphins who at last check were hopeful of adding Orton in trade from the Denver Broncos. Problem right now is the Broncos apparently have at least one other team on their line and are trying to reel in the highest draft pick compensation possible.

I do not know the specifics of what the Dolphins have offered (if anything, officially) but I understand the Broncos were asking for a first-round pick initially and are seeded in the second-round asking price of late. Really, Denver? A second for Kyle Orton?

The Dolphins aren't quite ready to do that, apparently. I hope they don't have to at that price. I would more comfortably understand yielding a conditional pick in which Miami gives up a fourth-rounder that could be a third if Orton takes the team to the playoffs, and maybe a second if he advances them to the AFC title game perhaps. (Yes, improbable, but I'm a dreamer.)

Bottom line: Be it either Orton or Hasselbeck, the point is clear the Dolphins are trying to add a veteran quarterback whose resume is superior to Chad Henne's because, well, they are trying to replace Chad Henne even if it's on a short-term basis.

Good for Miami.

Henne is young. He is talented. He has potential. But he has not earned the right to go into training camp unchallenged. He was benched in the 2010 season-finale, if you remember, the second time in the season he suffered that fate. That does not translate to, as some of you have suggested, "sticking with Henne to see if he develops."

The Dolphins are not afforded the luxury of seeing if Henne develops. Both Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland want to, have to, win now to secure the footing underneath themselves. Banking on Henne to either develop or flop for a third consecutive season is not the most certain way to secure one's footing.

Henne should be watching this and understanding. He must realize he still has a chance to win the job if he, well, wins the job. But he must realize this isn't 2010 when the job was simply handed to him without a competition.

The hope here is this itself makes Henne better. Nothing like a realistic view of the situation to sober the spirit and steel the mind. Would be nice if it improves the decision-making and long-range accuracy, also.

By the way, regardless of whom the Dolphins add -- and it will not be Donovan McNabb as some of you lobbied for -- the idea is not simply to hand over the job. Sure, Orton or Hasselbeck come with reputations. But the Dolphins can still sell the competition idea to the public and Henne.

That can only make everyone better.

Henne is German for jeffe.

armando i'm a henne supporter, as u call it and i'm happy for him to have competition, IMO he's better than orton and has more upside, but last season in training camp although he had no official competition he always had cp the hero form 08 lurking about, if he hadn't have been there they may have not benched him the first time, and he might have shown more leadership skills all season, until cp luxated his shoulder waving goodbye to the bench cp was alway quite strong (accuracy, and experience and leadership wise) competition

Orton is important for them to get. He is coming into his prime. He has gotten better every year. He has played on less than average teams with questionable o lines and done fine. For those that compare the ratings between Henne and Orton, those numbers don't tell whole story. They leave out TD to Int. ratio and also Orton has had many more big plays and much better big play ability. He is the key to this teams season as is signing a RB that can actually run the ball. Bradshaw is practically begging to come. Sign him already!!!!

Oh no no vy he will tear apart the locker rm. What are you a little boy missing his balls?! These are all grown men here and one guy is not going to tear them apart get out of your little pink fantasy land. Reality is VY has the best upside for this team with the least amount of compinsation hear that that means not only can he be better than orton but if things don't pan out we still got out f ing draft picks u pansies!!!

Don't count on Orton coming here to start the season on the bench when he can start somewhere else.

JRIJR2.............. AGREE BUT THERE'S a BIG PROBLEM ... ORTON IS DUE 11 MILLION THIS YEAR PLUS HE WILL NEED A NEW CONTRACT FRM FINS ,THEN YOU HAVE HENNE WHO PLAYED FOR 23 DOLLARS A YEAR WHO NEEDS ALSO A NEW CONTRACT ...............

Good Morning Fellas,

Cant wait to see what we can get done today.if its orton, great, if its VY,great, im ready for change and i know you guys are too......keep up the investigative techniques armando.............i will be here all day waiting

Bradshaw gives them the HR threat they need. He adds speed and big play ability. Isn't that exactly what this team needs? I just dont get what they are waiting for.

(( INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES ))............ MY FOOT ............

Aloco, maybe they can restructure? isk, just need to get him.

Fire Fist-Pump....go get Fisher

jrljr2........... i think the only way IS TO RELEASE FASANO WITH HIS MONEY ,THEN RESTRUCURE B.MARSHALL CONTRACT ,THEN RELEASE DANSBY IN THE NEXT YEAR AND GET HIS MONEY ,THE YOU HAVE SOME TO GIVE HENNE AND ORTON .

ORTON! ORTON!

First you silly people make Pat White into Michael Vick. "Oh, he didn't get a chance," you said. "He can still be a good QB," you said. Blah, blah, blah, reality sets in and he's not even in the LEAGUE anymore (shows how much YOU know).

Then last year it was the Tyler Thigpen brigade. "He doesn't get to work with the first team," you said. "He was better in training camp thus should be the starter," you said. Blah, blah, blah, the guy plays in 3-4 games (starting and coming in backup) and has a mixed to less-than-stellar bag. In, what, 4-5 years which he's been in the league, he's John Beck status (wait and see what Beck does if given the chance to start in Washington).

MESSAGE TO YOU: STOP DREAMING!!!

For everything said about Henne, at least he offers a glimmer of competition. The John Beck's of the world, Pat White's, and YES, TYLER THIGPEN'S, are NOT what this team needs. They need QBs that possibly, even if it's the stars needing to be aligned, could compete and even win a majority of games in a season.

Honestly, the team needs a franchise QB, which can most likely be found in the first-round of a Draft, but that's not possible this year, so next best option is to get a veteran QB who has a history and record of being able to win a game in the NFL.

The best choice, out of all the available options, is Kyle Orton, or Vince Young. I've suggested already Orton would be better, but I'd accept either. And looks like that's what will happen. We're not going into the season with Henne, Devlin, and Brand....whatever his name is. So accept it people. And accept we'll have to give something up for it (most likely a draft pick, hopefully not more than a 3rd round). That's the situation we're in. This is the best way out of a bad deal. For you Ireland lovers, blame the GM. He had 3 years to bring in a franchise QB, he failed (so far). Now he must pay the price, which will be whatever Denver wants for Orton.

BUT, if we get Orton, and he wins the starting spot, watch what even an averagely competent QB can do for this team. We'll win more games than we lose, that's my prediction. It's a glorious day to be a Dolphins fan!

he has more insider information than i do......so i rely on him....plus this is the only site thats not blocked by my admin at work.........ive been coming here for about a year now and i must say Aloco, you are def a mistake whose mother should have been pro choice

Phins trade Welker
Phins trade Camarilo
Phins trade....I am depressed

This is a 5 to 6 win team w. Henne or orton; go get S. Holmes and D. Williams to upgrade Henne/offense...that would be the best chance to win 8+; Bring in VY an let him start which would equal 2 wins and Andrew Luck being our qb next year

JAMESTHE FINMONKEY............... HOW YOU TAKE MY POST WHO DIDN'T INSULT YOU ALL TO MY MOTHER......................... SORRY TO SAY YOU R NOT NICE .

Al, if we all think Bmarsh would restructure we are dreaming. Other than that the only problem with cutting those guys is that there is nobody to replace them. I would think that they can somehow make it work with the 13 mik they have.

Orton better than Henne? I wouldn't be so sure...His years in Chicago weren't all that great. Last two years he's been okay. But, if there was certainly that he is a starting QB in this league Denver would not be trading or least not trading him at a affordable price.

Jets negitiating with Asohmugha.

NFL. C O M reporting Revis and Asohmugha will form one of the best CB tandems of all time.

AJDCZAR.............. YOU FORGOT TO SAY THAT THE..... MIN VIKINGS HAVE RELEASED CAMARILLO ..................

Kyle Orton is not coming to the Phins. Go the stats page on nfl.com and click qb's.
Henne was ranked 16th last year. In spite of starting only 14 games, having the least productive running game in the NFL and starting behind a line in which Pat McQuistan started at 3 different positions (McQuistan was working at Footlocker when the Phins signed him and made him an immediate starter). Henne put up identical numbers to Sam Bradford last year and got paid $500k to do it. That's it 500k.
Let's see the QB ranked 16th in the league and he is under contract this year for 500k.
Oh yeah the highest rated qb in the category of passing effectiveness in the 10-20 yard range last year: Chad Henne. Thanks Mando for the balanced reporting.

Everyone here love Pennington. As they should. Orton will be better. It is very difficult to run 13 play drives without a mistake. That's why they don't score. Orton gives them the big play ability they lack. Him, B Marsh, Bess, and hopefully Bradshaw gets them 10 wins and a wild card spot. Do it!!!

Pricemaster, go to the ESPN stats. They have Henne ranked 26th in 2010.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/quarterbackRating

Pricemaster. Do you even listen to what you say? Henne had equal stats to Bradford? A rookie? Henne 4 year college 3 year pro and still only matches a rookie and you are seeing that as a highlight?

I can honestly say i only read your posts about 10% of the time aloco they are always so drab and unnecessary......ive read two already today and thats because they were directed my way so my quota is full for the day

JL, cutler is struggling in Chicago because they are terrible on offense as well. Orton is a big play guy that trusts what he sees (like open receivers). Henne best in 10-20 yard range because of Marshall and Bess. He can't score in red zone when Defenses buckle up. He's a career back up. Get Orton.

THE MOST UN JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD ........TO PAY HENNE 500,000 THIS SEASON ................. (( SENT A MASSAGE TO HENNE )) HEAD LINE IS A PROVE THAT ARMANDO VIEWS OF ALL BLOGGERS IN HERE ARE...HAVING LOW IQ ................................

JAMES........ YOU DON'T NEED TO USE FOUL LANGUAGE TO STATE YOUR POINT............ IT'S EASY TO USE A FOUL LANGUAGE .

unlike orton VY has actually taken a team to play offs and costs no picks. Go get VY. Keep the 3rd you were gonna give up for orton then move up in the first round next year with that 3rd and draft a good QB

Ok, all you people saying Henne can still be good either a) don't watch football, or b) have shyt for brains.

WHO CARES WHO THE STARTER IS? This team currently has on it's roster for the position of QB Chad Henne, a rookie Devlin they just signed, and a practice squad guy. Do you morons REALLY think the front office will allow the season to be played with THOSE 3 players ALONE? So stop talking about getting this guy or that guy to help the offense. That's a GIVEN! It's ALSO A GIVEN that we need to pickup another QB to be either the starter or backup to Henne.

Those are independent things that do not correlate with each other.

Please people, it's early in the season. Let's just stop this now. If you know nothing about football, please go to the Sun Sentinel site. This blog is for fans of the Dolphins who know something about football. IF you say we don't need any other QB this year, you've proven yourself to be the opposite.

orton did play on denver team with nolan as QB and they won 7 games.

DC......... I AM THE FIRST TO TAKE YOUR ADVICE TO HEART .....NO MORE TALK FROM ME RE GET THIS GUY OR THAT GUY ..........

VY and thanks Mando for reeling in the Henne gang of defeat!

DC. Take a pill. Chill man. No need to offend the bloggers.

Do you realize some are young and new fans just learning about the game?

Do you realize not everything you say is brilliant or on the money?

this is all for the better. GET YINCE YOUNG pah pah please!!! f marion barber we dont need that. get bradshaw or d williams and resign ronnie. any talks about snatching barret ruud?

p.s. mando stop with the long boring humor. your attempt at sarcasm takes way too long, i never make it though your schtick

ALEX HAS A HIGH IQ ,I CAN TELL .

DC DOLFAN,

Im with you......id also take orton or young, either one is an upgrade. The plus i like for orton is his history with the beast. If those two have any chemistry at all they could be great, we could be great, as far as i am concerned the duo of our qb, whoever it is and b marshall, will be the catalyst for our team this year. I dont think the beast has much confidence in henne. If you dont think the qb is gonna get you the ball then why try hard. Marshall needs the ball 12-15 times a game i believe orton will get it to him. The plus with young to me is his ability to make plays outside the pocket..........but i lean toward orton......i say give them a 3rd and try to unload a player with it ala crowder if poss.......if not give them a second and lets go get some wins

I agree with Mando in that competition will lead to teh answer on henne. How? by how he responds to that competition. If he wilts away, then we have a vet to replace him, if Henne embraces it and takes it as a challenge he relishes, maybe he gets back on track.

Either way and I support Henne, he hasnt done anything that warrants him being given the job

DC, I agree that if the Fins get "average" qb play, we (the fans) will see a much better product on the field. The Dolphins have a fairly talented roster (save the RB and QB position). The RB problem will work itself out, average-to-good RB are not all that difficult to find. Heck, we could resign Ronnie Brown to get an average-to-good RB. With Orton we would get above average QB play. Is the guy Marino? No, but he is better than Henne has been.

Better qb play will put the Dolphins in the playoffs. And to all of the VY supporters, it aint gonna happen.

I see the Bills beating us twice next year now.

Thigpen never did nor never would get a fair shot here.

If Orton is an upgrade to Henne, then why isnt he worth a #2 dp? When u see a player u want, then go get him.

Denver Post is reporting Orton trading partners are drying up. Denver must either trade with Miami or wait til preseason plays out to see what happens.

DENVER WILL BE FORCED TO EAT SOME ORTON SALARY IF IT'S TRUE TO WHAT PETE G SAID .

Asomugha is going to the Jets. Do you want Orton Henne or VY as our offensive weapon? VY is the only one of the bunch that will give DC's problems. Take a dang chance on the most dynamic QB available. VY being released Thursday. Fins are waiting to bite.

Look, I want Henne to start because I believe he is going to be a star!!! Now!!! That being said:

Mando, This is GREAT news. I hope the phins get a guy with a better resume than Henne to come in a take the job. The problem is I still believe Henne will out play any of the names you mentioned and/or are available.

Mando, have you had the ability to talk to any of the players doing the voluntary workouts that Henne led? I am hearing some really good things, specifically from D. Bess.

Look, Henne needs a message to be sent to him. If he has all the talent, which I agree he does, he has to throw it all out there NOW!

Hopefully we do not waste a high draft pick for this competition.

Asomugha is not going to the jets.......they have too many other issues to deal with their cap will be used up......i see him going to the ravens........or detroit

Heres an idea, why not trade Henne to Denver for Orton and a 4th round pick. Then get Vince Young as the backup and let him sit and learn for 1 or 2 years behing Orton. Simple wright? Make it happen Armando!!!

it's not that orton is so much better than henne,it's that orton is nowhere as bad as henne.lol

There are too many people whinning and complaining for something to get done ASAP, truth is it's going to take a few days because they're going after TOP free agents and more teams are competing, if it were so easy to grab
Orton or Williams or Bradshaw we would have done it by now. You'll get your star FA prize, just be patient and stop bitching just because you feel like it

Why would Denver want Henne? People get real. So many comments here offering a trade of one of our bad players for one of their good players and a later round pick. Fantasy land, nobody would do it.

Asomugha in his prime is not going to Detroit. He is only going to a team that is ready to win the big game.

Any chance Reggie Bush comes here?

He'd be an excellent safety net for Henne......And besides.....If we don't go at him, you know the Pats will.

TiredDolphin. Trade Henne for Orton. Which is still not guaranteed to be an upgrade, then go get a quitter, who runs away and hides for 2 weeks and cries when his coach tells him he is a bad boy?

I am not sure about that being a good thing for the phins at all.

Reggie bush could come here, I think it is in the plans to at least talk to him and availability. I think the problem is, you would be better off paying sproles or bradshaw and get something similar with a more proven resume. Just my thoughts.

Santonio Holmes agrees to terms with the Jets.

Hey Shorty,

Watch some football Detroit will be in the playoffs this year they have all the talent they can handle except........lb and cb plenty of cap space. Two nasty dt to rush the qb throws thus giving up int. youre a fool if you dont think detroit is capable of landing nnamdi

jamesthefinfan

Thanks for calling me a fool. What does that make you?

Key word in the sentence was IF......give yourself some credit

SHORTY...... BE HAPPY THAT JAMESTHEFINFAN DIDN'T USE HIS FOUL LANGUAGE ............

Aloco
