Chad Henne in his own words

Chad Henne spoke with the media today in advance of Saturday's important preseason game at Tampa Bay.

The minor challenge he had to his starting job prior to last week's game is apparently passed. Now, he's clear to discuss the return of Jake Long, his expectations for Tampa Bay, what statement he can make in that game, and whether the Dolphins offense is going to shock the world this season.

By the way, I noticed yesterday some of you commenting on Tony Sparano's speech pattern. Everyone is different folks. Henne has his own style, too.

Enjoy:

(On having Jake back in the lineup) - “Yeah, it’s good to see him back, not only is it good to see him back, his physical talent is getting better, leadership qualities also, helping out in the huddle, doing a really good job with the offensive line, the guys in the huddle so yeah, all-round, it’s great to have him back in the huddle.” (On having him on your blindside) - “It’s great, he’s going to do his job every time. Feel comfortable, he’s going to give it his all, and it’s just a lot of fun having him here.”

(On looking forward to the next preseason game) - “Yeah, absolutely, I think, overall, Tampa is a fast, young team, upcoming and were excited to get better, were excited to get more plays in as an offense and I think it’s just going to be a good challenge to see where we progressed from last week to this week.”

(On being more an attacking offense) - “Absolutely, we’re definitely out there to attack them. If they give us a coverage that we see, we change and audible the play and we’re definitely on the attack in the game and they’re going to have to adjust to us.”

(On playing more to your strengths than compared to last year) - “Well, I think it’s more in my hands, I think as a quarterback, I have more audibles, I can get us in and out of the plays, get us the right plays, and give us a shot out there on the field.”

(On looking more comfortable on the field) - “Maybe, it’s things I’ve learned in the offseason, I think, it’s going on year four for me so I definitely feel a comfort level, but there’s still a lot of work to be done and I’m still not set in stone and knowing everything about the offense and the little twitches here and there, but I definitely feel like we’re going in the right direction, feeling really good where we’re at right now.”

(On where do you think you are in terms of game simulation) - “Well, I mean, we pretty much, we have most of our stuff in whether we ran the plays or not, we did install most of the playbook, but you know, it’s game week, you know, so you got to prepare for each and every team, there’s going to be different game plans in them.”

(On how much you had to running practices in the offseason) - “Yeah, definitely, very beneficial to myself, on the leadership part of the side, and just, you know, getting the guys to listen to me rather than coach and I think you get a little more out of it when its player to player rather than coach to player and kind of get them in the right spot, even though, you tweak a little bit about the route, you get a feel for them against stiff defensive coverages.”

(On biggest difference in running backs) - “Well, I mean, obviously, last year we had two powerful backs, they can run the ball up and inside, we didn’t really use them a lot in the passing game. I think this year we’re more versatile in Reggie Bush, going out there, Daniel Thomas definitely go out there in routes, but I think we still have that power attitude also with all those backs. You know, Daniel (Thomas) and then Larry (Johnson) out there definitely are power backs.”

(On how the league is going to be shocked with the new offense) - “Well, I mean, it’s definitely a big change, it’s going to be a big change for everybody so you know, they’re watching film on us now, they’re studying us hard so they’re going to have adjustments on their defensive side and we’ll see a lot of different coverages than we have in the previous years, but we’re excited to see, we got to get to Tampa this week and see what we can improve next week."

(On this game being a statement game)- “Yeah, I mean, they were a great team last year, started off very fast, have a lot of speed on defense, the biggest part that the defense reads the quarterbacks eyes pretty well so you got to be alert where everybody’s at, fit in the windows, and make the smart plays out there, but definitely a great test for us. Their offense, you know, got (Josh) Freeman back as a quarterback, he’s doing a really good job there so we’re going to have a good shot to see where we at right now.”

(On hoping to see after playing Tampa) - “We’re definitely going to try to improve on things that we can improve on from last week. You know, we got to come out fast, start fast as we did last week, put more points on the board when we get a chance into the red zone, put touchdowns on the board rather than field goals so we’re just looking to get those drives going, start fast, and make them adjust to our speed.”

(On the difference of having Reggie Bush in the lineup rather than not) - “Yeah, I mean, he definitely helped us out opened up some lanes in the passing game and obviously, in the running game. He’s a hard runner, once he hits the hole, he’s agile, makes somebody miss, it’s definitely tough to bring him down so he opens up a lot of space for us from the offensive side of the ball.”

(On impressions of Charles Clay) - “Yeah, Charles (Clay) is great. He’s coming a long, he’s still learning the offense, but done a great job, but what shocks me is his speed, he can really get down the field and attack, if he has a corner on him, you know, he can almost, you know, sometimes run under it, and safeties and linebackers, it’s going to be a little mismatch, but he’s done a really good job, he’s improving in his blocking, if we need him in there to block, but we’re excited in having him here.”

(On working with Mike Pouncey) - “Mike's been great, and smart guy, really smart guy. Picked up things really quickly, obviously he was there in the offseason workouts a little bit and that helped out, but our offensive line coach, Guge (Dave DeGuglielmo), has done a great job with him. Bringing him along, giving him technique, letting him make calls up front rather than me just giving him the answers so trying to build him up so he can make some of the calls and take a little off my plate.”

(On the shotgun snaps) - “Well, I mean, he’s been doing a great job. He gets it in the right places, I think last week we only had one miscue on the snap, but doing a really good job putting the ball where it needs to be and you know, being decisive where the snap is.

DC,

I`m real curious to see that game as well caught the replay of the Steelers Vs. The Skins and thought Grossman looked sharp but Kyle Shanahan keeps insisting about Beck, so I`ll definetly be watching as well.

F4L-

Wow, that's too bad about Willis. I don't like the prospect of having to cover up for Colombo's pass protection problems.

I really was hoping Willis would be the guy.

DC-
Agree about Beck. The Colts don't even try to disguise their coverages in preseason- easy to pick apart.

fin72,

You and me both Buddy, expect to see some double TE sets to help out on the rightside and if not Carey will move back and Jerry slides back in at RG by default at some point or Henne will be doing alot of running.

Yay! Line breaks!

F4L/FF72,

Grossman was better than Beck, actually threw for a TD (Beck didn't), had better control of the offense. But he threw a pick. I think that's why the Shanahan's don't trust him. He throws for a lot of yards, but has LOTS of INTs too. The word around town is Beck was promised he'd be the starter LAST year when they were threw with McNabb.

Even if he becomes serviceable, we did the right thing getting rid of Beck. NO WAY we could've waited around for him to become a starter. Look at all the trouble with Henne. Wish Beck well and all, but I'm happy we moved on. If Henne doesn't show up this year, we'll move on from him too.

DC-

Wish the best for Henne, but I want a 1st RD QB next year either way. Henne and Beck are both 2nd rounders- not championship caliber.

WHY WE ARE TALKING GROSSMAN AND BECK WHEN WE CAN TALK D.THOMAS FOR THE BUST THAT HE'S OR OUR BAD DEFENSE WHICH HAD A RECORD OF 1-7 @ HOME OR FASANO WHO CAN'T CATCH THE BALL .

I know that's a fake ALoco @5:03.

He who created G.O.D. - the notorious Gang of Defeat.

I JUST SAW AN ARTICLE SAYING D.THOMAS COULD BE RELEASED FOR HE'S NOT IMPRESSING THE COACHING STAFF OR THE MANGER

DC,

Totally agree with your assesment of Beck who when drafted was an even bigger project than Henne coming into the League from the Pass happy, NO-Defense playing WAC Confrence. It`s also worth remembering he came into the NFL as a 26 year old rookie in 07, so at or around 30 in 2011 is no long term answer himself for a pocket passer.

fin4life,

What's up man!! I gotta disagree about Planet of the Apes...I thought it was GREAT!! Amazing what they can do with technology these days.

I'd like to see Murtha being given a chance to play RT. I don't think he's as bad as some people make out. I don't have a lot of confidence in Colombo, so give Murtha a chance. Outside of the penalties I think he's done a decent job.

Armando, I just think most of us think if this is how Sparano is with the media then this must be how he is with the players and other coaches. It's obvious that communication is not his strong suit.

hard to be worse than henne, but beck may just do it

FINSFAN72,

I AM THE REAL ONE IF THERE'S SUCH THING .....BACALA

GRAIG M........

FOR ANY HUMAN TO GO TO THE MOVIES TO WATCH SUCH A BAD MOVIE LIKE (( PLANET OF THE APES )) ....HE MUST BE SERVING JAIL TIME W/LABOR ...........BACALA.........

The buffet said "ALL YOU CAN EAT", but I'm still hungry...

I'll pass on the fish....all I eat is tuna.

You want to critique something go watch a movie or more over a jets game! Ggg

I HOPE GRAIG M KNOWS WE R JUST TALKING AND I AM SORRY IF I OFFENDED YOU ......

Personally I think we are going to cripple Brady and start out strong. On a funny note though I went to Wlamrt with my 2 year old to get him some clothes and saw Dolphin jerseys for $30 . Losing my old one and going to Monday Nights opening game I decided to get one. There were a group of jerseys on sale though for $11 . They were Henne's lol so I'm rocking #7 in support this year lmao

I like Chicken of the Sea tuna, mixed with mayo, onions and pickles. I make a nice sandwich with rye bread and lettuce. YUM!

Lobo-

NOT ALL TUNA CANS ARE CREATED EQUAL .................

ANY CAN OF TUNA IS LESS THAN 4 DOLLARS IS NO GOOD .

YOU CAN BUY SMELLY USED FIN JERSEYS FOR 3;00 DOLLARS ON THE INTERNET .

CraigM @5:08,

I agree about giving Murtha a shot on the rightside, yeah he had those penalties Vs. Carolina but outside of that he did real well in pass protecting the blindside against Atl and Car.`s starters. I got a feeling though Sparano is dead set on starting the Season with Colombo out there and it won`t be till an early miserable outing were they turn him into a revolving door for sacks and really light him up that we see any switches, got a bad feeling about the RT spot and pressure early in the Season. I saw a post from DB were he said his pass blocking wouldn`t really be an issue at RT because Jake will see the speed rusher on the left but really couldn`t disagree more.

All you have to do is remember last Season when we played G.B. and Nolan seeing Rookie Brian Baluga at RT switched Wake back and forth thru out the game and Wake ate him alive, same will happen to Colombo unfortunatly Sparano won`t make the swich until the Heat gets turned up after one of those outings and when I say unfortunatly I say it for Henne who will catch a few on the chim early in the Season.

People forget how interchangeable LB`s are in a 3/4 and the speed of those wide stances they take will cause all kinds of problems for Colombo who really seems to have lost a few steps since his 09 knee injury because he just can`t seem to get back in time to pass block!! Bro, on Planet of the Apes I just thought it took to long to cut loose on the action and the dialogue was looong and dumb but your right on those special affects, ever since Independence Day back in 97 it seems every year movies just keep topping themselves in the effects dept.

I'm reading a few posts, I won't mention names, that have us rolling over to the Patriots. We know we can't beat them so it's a check to see where we're at.
I can tell you where we're at without the game being played. We're SOL, and 3rd or worse in our division of 4 teams.
Btw, curious to know what your opinion of our chances against the Pats if (hypothetically) Drew Brees was our QB? A little different isn't it? Now tell me again how I'm supposed to shake the pom-poms for Henne, and not beg the FO to get serious and find our QB star somewhere.
Personally, I don't think we're good enough to beat the Pats or Jets. But I plan on beating them every year just the same. Wish the FO did too.
And don't give me blah-blah about we upgraded center, and 3rd receiver, and water-boy. Without a star QB, you're 3rd in your division. Simple.

What did he say about the chemtrails and HAARP created & steered hurricane Irene ?

HAARP earthquakes?

At least it wasn't Chad Henne in Tony Sparano's words. Whew!!

F4L-

I just watched Independence Day this week, and it's amazing how good it still is. I've seen it a dozen times the last 14 years, but it still gives me goose bumps when the president says "we'll declare this our independence day!"

The Pats have finely tuned their offense for years. Now some of you think a brand new offense with brand new players on a short offseason is going to be anything like what the Pats have got going?

It's going to take time, lots of it.

fin72,

We must have both been watching it at the same time cause I saw it this week to, LOL about that scene at the end with the Presidents speech, gets me as well.

Mando, when you're quoting these gentlemen, could you please edit out their verbal pauses, and other phrases that fail to add to their comment, such as this, "“Yeah, I mean, they were a great team last year." For instance, you could cut out "I mean" and not lose anything from his point. Please do so, and I'm sure everyone will be happy, including Sparano and Henne.

On my way home to catch the game tonight catch you all later, good catching up fin72.

I SAW THE OLD STEVE MARTIN MOVIE (( THE MAN WITH 2 BRAINS )) , A GREAT MOVIE ......

who said that? think anyone with half a brain knows the pats are 1000 times better than us

I saw Snakes On A Plane. Best move ever, I watch it every weekend.

(( DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS ))) W/STEVE MARTIN AND M.CAINE ......

ONE GREAT MOVIE ........

BreakBack Mountain was another great flick. Especially when there is no football to watch.

Just saw the latest BAD NEWS BEARS with Billy Bob Thorton as the drunken coach...hey that sounds like a role for Odinseye, hmmmm

DB-

You don't mean to say "snakes on a Plane" is better than the Godfather, do you?

Fake DB at 5:57?

buffet of knowledge .

I meant BrokeBack Mountain. Excellent. Won some awards I think.

Same actor as The Dark Knight Batman movie.

The movie with the 2 cowboys who fell in love? Kind of a CHICK FLICK isn't it?

Mando, I like you,I really do, But You and the other doom and gloom henne bashers really piss me off.

I realize you have to cover the team...But I feel you take the easy road by bagging on henne so much. It's kid of a cop out. Omar bin laden from the other rag is the worst.........However, The real issue has been ownership, coaching, and GM'ing.

If you rag on them they bar you......... See where I am going? Give the kid a break, he is not that bad considering what he has had to work/deal with.

If you want me to pull stats from current or future hall of famers with the same number of starts, call my bluff. I have done it before.

Just be fair.

man people need to go ahead and leave this dude alone and let's see how the phins look on saturday

he seems to be getting better each week and that's all you can ask

fin72, you said it brother. I was calling for a 1st-rd QB draft pick for a decade now. I still will next year (even if we make the Playoffs). We need a franchise QB in the worst way, and I'd risk the future to get one!

On another note, just got finished with my workout. Fellas, I'm gettin' back to fighting shape. If Clay doesn't work out, I may be the answer at H-Back. Hell, I'd in my late 30's, but I feel like a teenager again. Gonna go home and screw my wife twice....IN ONE DAY!!! Nineteen baby!

DC

No need to screw your wife twice, I just did her thrice! LOL.

You go DC!

Wondering if mando take pleasure in having team sounding slow during interviews, because I read basically the same story in the sentinel and if much clearer without the "yeah" etc ...!

The defense looks stout! I was a defender of channing and not ashamed to admit it but Barnett is a big upgrade, the guy keep flashing!!

I love Daboll already, finally we have an OC that has a clue!! Was it me, Henne doesn't look so robotic out there!! I admit I was spooked with Henne but the admission of the lack of creative by the last OC and Sparano himself makes me think its not Henne anymore! #reserve judgment thought!! I also feel with more timing with the Wrs that those deep balls will start connecting! Im I the only constantly baffled at how Hartline is always behind defenders!!

On Larry Johnson, I think of all the veterans Rbs, he was more healthy than any of the big name free agent backs not to mention just as good!! He's not here to start, just a part!! We need that!!

Jimmy Wilson has soon some skills so why waste time with Will Allen! The only way these youngsters are gonna improve is by trail and error!! That does mean just stick him out there if his continuous ly make mistakes!!

Overall the new offense has given me so much life that I was in HEAT mode still, but from what I've seen, deep pass, screens and the different platoons I'm seeing players line up is what tue Dr order!! For the first time in Sparano tenure I can't predict the play calling! Kudos!! Defensively im expecting big things but tue only thing that worries me is that Sean Smith still has the cleanest uniform at halftime of all starters!!
Im reserving predictions until the 3rd game of the season!! That should let us know what kind of team we have! One thing I do know, we will be competitive, just hoping for more 7's over 3's and we will be just fine!!!

GO DOLPHINS!! yu to Henne!!!

Sorry few typos ^^ been awhile!!

I see we still have loser jet trolls trolling our blogs as if Rex does have any new soundbites on how this will be the year they win the Superbowl! I can't believe he's still getting pub with this bullisht!! He should be on the hotseat as well but I forgot it's refreshing to hear a coach speak this way! ONCE AGAIN BULLISHT!!!

They are mad bros erasin my post

Dont be scared u suck
