Confidence is good ... now back it up, please

One of the things that aligns people such as Joe Namath, Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali and Pat Riley with folks like, say, Rex Ryan is they all make big, audacious statements about who they are and what they're about to do.

It could be argued that on the low end of that boldness totem pole, we find Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, who on Thursday had a definite opinion of where he and fellow starting corner Sean Smith rate among NFL starting duos.

"I'm going go (out) on the limb and say we're the best tandem in the league," Davis said.

But there's, there's Revis-Cromartie, there's the coming union of Asomugha and Samuels in Philly. There's my personal pick for top duo -- Williams and Woodson.

"Name all of them," Davis said. "I'm putting it out there, we're the best talent."

Well, I'd say the Miami tandem has a chance to become the best duo in the NFL. But it is quite safe to say -- even on a Dolphins fan-crazy blog -- that Davis and Smith definitely have not been the best duo in the NFL up to now.

Not when the two players combined for two interceptions last season.

Yesterday, by the way, was big-talk Thursday at Dolphins camp. That's great!

Even Tony Sparano, who is the most understated guy in Broward County according to a poll of Understated People of Broward, went about as far as he gets on chest pounding by saying the Dolphins will compete in the AFC East.

Wow!

No, seriously, coach said his team will "make a run at this thing."

"I can’t tell you how this thing is going to turn out one way or the other but I can tell you that the way this team works, the attitude that I see, the ingredients that we have right now all show me that this team is poised and ready to go here to make a run at this thing," Sparano said. "And I think that I’ve been pleased with what we’ve done it practice.  We aren’t going to back down from anybody in this division.  I don’t care who they are and whose out there.  Our team comes to compete every single week and they have.  This team will compete and will compete at a high level in this division.

"I think we’re one of the good teams in this division and I think anybody that doesn’t believe that probably going to make a big mistake.”

Your thoughts ...?

The thing about the last two years about adjustments at half time was a oppossing team did'nt have to make any on defense maybe debol will change that.

I'm excited to watch Saturday's game. Yeah it's pre-season but the third game is always the best. And if you look at the first two games I didn't learn much. We were beaten down by Atl, yeah I know the score but let's be honest here, and a thrashing of Carolina who's bad, Andy Dalton torched them last night with a 107.5 QB rating. So to this point it looks like we're right in the middle as many of the pundits think. But this game is against a young, rising Tampa team that's also in the middle. Be interesting to see physically how our starters stack up.

good call poizen

fp4fgs, my belief is that dabolls brain is still responsive unlike hennings, henneings clung to his scheme and balmed poor execution for failure, but it's easier to execute a plan if the plan is easier to execute!!

can't wait to see ts, nolan and daboll show some brains on the sidelines

fg4fp's i will be watching how ts reacts to fg's, is he listening?, i'll allow him to celebrate with fp only if no time left or makes a 2 score margin with little time left,

Henne will still have up and down weeks unfortunately!! That will land us at about the 7-9 mark again.

Chris, Tampa finished 10 and 6 last year(I think) and sat out the play-offs, Meaning the fins are gonna have to get past the 10 game win mark, and again that might not be enough. This is the AFC, Gurantee that Balt,Pats,Steelers,Jets,Indy,Chargers all have 11 wins at least.

I think what vontae wanted to say is that they are the best CB tandem for the price :-)

I Hope to change my Moniker to "FP4TDs"

The best QB tandum to miss Hurricane Irene?

I'm not saying we're playoff material. I'm saying Saturday's game may give the best indication of how we stack up physically and athletically with other teams on the rise. The kind of teams we are going to need to beat to become a playoff team.

What up fellow Dolphans!

Vontae Davis I can see being an elite corner if he can improve a bit and get some INT's this year. Sean Smith... Maybe it's the heat that's making him a bit crazy.

10-6 if we are lucky and bush stays healthy

The talent is there...no question. Where this team needs to get better, and others have mentioned it already, is mentally. The folded in the game against Pittsburgh after the tough call from the official. They were weak against the Bears because of a few depletions from the lineup. The were weak against the Bills, Browns and Lions, all games they SHOULD have won on paper and they mailed it in the last week of the season against the Pats. Part of that is coaching but part of that is leadership on the team. To me, this team is better on paper this year. Paper doesn't mean squat though. Are the Hennes, Marshalls, Davis', Smiths and Bushs going to step up this year or are they going to mail it in when things get tough. Time will tell...

SONE THE DRUNKS AND THE FISH (ALSO KNOW AS "OBAMAS MINNIONS") WILL WAKE UP AND POST FOR 12 OR 13 HOURS,YOU ALL KNOW WHO THEY ARE., I AM GIONG TO MY FAVORITE SUB SHOP TO FAEST ON MEETBALL SUB, TO BE OR NOT TO BE.

Not really news here. All players are
confident in their ability, and many assume they have a shot at greatness. And any of them worth anything will feel and say how confident they are about the upcoming season (before they play and find out the truth). As I said before, a team that doesn't believe it can win the Super Bowl, won't. That said... this seems very weak and manufactured. It almost sounds like Sparano is surprised, and even giddy that his team doesn't look as bad as he feared. "OMG, I don't think we suck! Yahooooo!!" A little more Mr. Miyagi, and less Vanilla Ice in the confident persona would be best I think.
I'm expecting the offense to come together a little late in the season, but have its' moments early. And the D is the glue here, if they play well, we could manage a respectable season. But I predict 3rd in the division still, and no playoffs.
Getting tired of the tradition. Hope it changes soon.

Idiotic remark by Vontae.

After two 7-9 seasons in a row, n°1 priority should be : "let's be humble and try to progress".

Vontae should take Green Bay, Pittsburgh or New England as examples: low profiles, high performances.

Gotta like Davis' attitude. Thats what you want out of a corner. He's really not that far off. They certainly have the potential to be a top 5 tandem, if not top 3. Davis doesnt have far to go to reach that elite level. Nor does Smith, who needs to simply hang on to the ball.

You cant drop a lot of INT's unless you're always in the right spot.

Kkkkkkkkkkk lol!!!

I like , this is the first time Sparano has made a personal statement as to the team instead of PR BS. We have the talent now we just need to ad the balls . Wonderful thing about football is the phrase any given sunday :)

Lets see how cocky they are at 1-3. This offense needs a lot more time to get it together.

From PFT

Sparano’s spirit may be willing, but his team’s flesh may be weak. Plenty of teams want to stretch the field. Not all of them can.

So there’s a chance that this effort to keep the Dolphins’ defense on the field less could get them on the field more. And it could get Sparano fired come January.

Vontae and Sparano found Ricky's Super Double Secret Emergency Stash o' Premium Weed while waiting out Hurricane Irene. My response: THAT'S GOTTA BE SOME GOOD STUFF IF THEY ARE TALKING LIKE THAT!

Lets say Miami Beats The Mighty Pats 31 to 21 on Monday Night Football, What will PFT,Mike And Mike an the rest of the Naysayers(ESPN) say?, Just wondering?

.....I can tell you that the way this team works, the attitude that I see, the ingredients that we have right now all show me that this team is poised and ready to go here to make a run at this thing," Sparano said.
---------------------------------------------

My question is this....what did Coach Tony see last year....something different.....

As usual this was a non statement...one of many by Coach Tony.....

Everyone is working hard in practice right now...

Every team believes they have a shot....

Every teams fans start to get the big EYES of optimisim about and hope.....

We are no different....

I am no different.....

Good Luck Miami......

Well as tough as it is going to be, if we want to consider ourselves contenders in the AFC East we NEED that Monday night game. Got to win your home games against the top teams in the division. Win that game and a loss to Houston is fine.

KRIS TRYING TO MOVE FROM THE DONKY BREGADE TO THE GANG OF DEFEET WITH THAT STATEMENT.< YOU JUST MEGHT MAKE IT CRIS, BTW,WHAT WIL YOU BE HAVING FOR LUNCH?

It's really inconceivable to think that Henne won't be better than last year given the absolutley stupid play calling and schemes run by Henning last year. Henning was a QB's nightmare. The OL has improved IMO so the run game will be better and of course Bush adds much. The only question is "how much better" Henne will be.

Hard to believe the Fins won't go from 30th in offense to 15. Combine that with a proven strong D and in this game of inches anything can happen, like 11-5 even 12-4 if the balls bounce the right way and ref's make the right calls.

Mondo, if Henne is so immproved (his words) then why in the world cant he hit at least one deep pass to a WR? Carolina game he missed three wide open WR's who could have walked backwards into the end zone. If Henne doesnt hit those deep passes then this yr is a waste of time and effort. The Dolphins have to have chunk yardage. RAC is a very good thing, but u cant expect Marshall/Gates/Hartline to, everytime they receive a 7yd pass, run 60yds for a TD. And I remain convinced that Ireland should have signed Bryant McKinnie when he had the chance. But with all things Dolphin, its now a mute point.

We proved last year we could win on the road. If we would have played .500 ball at home we would have had a great chance to make the playoffs. We beat the Superbowl champ Packers @ their place, got ripped off against Superbowl runners up Steelers and won @ the hated Jets. Those 3 games show we can compete with any team and I think we did improve the team in the offseason. If they can get a little confidence and momentum I think the playoffs are a real possibility. Go Phins

Coach just stated the obvious goal. They had better believe they can make a run at this thing.

However...

While I think that Miami will be much more competitive, fun to watch & root for, and that Henne will be better than most people think he can be, I also believe that making the playoffs is going to be extremely tough.

It's hard for me to imagine the fins finishing 2nd in the division (who's 3rd, Pats or Jets?)and I don't think 3 teams from the division will make the playoffs.

I think the AFC West & AFC South will have a clear-cut champ and you won't see any wildcard teams come out of those divisions (I think Indy is out this year), but, the AFC North has 2 very good teams, Pittsburgh & Baltimore, and I would bet that one of them will be a wildcard...that leaves only 1 wildcard from the AFC East.

To sum it up, I don't think "holding serve" in the division will be good enough. I Believe the fins will have to sweep 2 of their division foes ...and they better not lose focus against the Bills.

Here's the bright side, the slate is clean, and anything is possible at this point.

Lets look at the facts. The schedule has several win-able games, there are some weak teams on it. The defense to me appears to be close to, if not playoff caliber. The problem again centers around the offense , inparticular, Chad Henne. If he actually become consistant and improves greatly , this team may have a playoff shot. But i am not sold on him yet as he was horrible against playoff Atlanta, and then looked good against the worst team last year in Carolina. Not drinking any juice on him being great yet if ever.
So , i fear 9-7 this year only based on some soft teams on the schedule and a great defense.
If the offense can get it going, then maybe we have a shot at a wildcard...Chad is the "if" to all of this.

If the Fins could go 7-9 last year (should be 8-8 Steelers win) with a brain dead offense no reason 10-6 is not attainable. 11-5 is more like it.

Improved D

Bush, Clay and Gates. Yeah i know the rooks are unproven but they are looking good and will be forced to grow up fast. They'll get playintg time.

Clay is as important as Bush IMO. He's got to control the middle of the field which will be absolutley HUGE for Henne. That plus two guys that need double teams at all times in Marshall and Bush and that spells real headaches for opposing defenses.

Clay, Marshall, Bush and a creative O. How can Henne not be better with that?

I know Clay is just a rookie but I am counting on him big time. Aaron Hernandez did it as a rook last year, Clay can too. The slow Kevin Boss did it as a rook too the year Shockey went down.

Pragmatic See my 10:28 post, Agree.

What Else Is Morono Going To Say...I am not drinking the kool aid...This team is a distant 2nd to the New York Jets and not in the same ball park with the patriots...Get Me a Quarterback on this team that is good...consistently good...and I might change my opinion....

FP4FGs,

Miami fans have to hope the Browns & Bengals are improved enough to give the top of that division a few black eyes this year.

Anybody notice the season ends with the Bills, Pats, Jets? I hope those games have meaning beyond just playing spoiler...

Tony Sparanos next job interview.

GM: So can you tell me how you improved your last team?

TS: Well we had 3042 preseason snaps in the first year and those types of things, and 42 mental errors. In the second year, we had 3067 snaps and only 27 mental errors, so more snaps and less errors and these types of things. In my final year we had 3199 snaps and only 12 mental errors, so these types of things and those types of things have improved steadily and I am proud of that I really am.

GM: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

TS: Um sir, Mr. GM, are you awake?

GM: Oh, excuse me, nodded off there. So you were saying?

TS: Well the types of things I was saying were the increased snap counts and reduced errors which when you break it down, it makes the difference in the games.

GM: What difference did they make?

TS: Well, these types of things take time to see. So I didn't see them yet. But you may see them in the next game or a future game and I really believe that I really do.

GM: What was your overall record last year?

TS: 7-9

GM: What was your over all record the previous year?

TS: 7-9

GM: And so back to my original question, can you tell me just what you did to improve your team?

TS: Well I thought I explained that already, but you were sleeping.

GM: I was sleeping. And was your team sleeping too last year?

TS: Well to be honest, these types of things come up and we address them we really do, so it has come up, the team slept in the last few games, but I did wake them up afterwards, I really did. And I mean that.

GM: I was wondering, I have a very hyper active child that needs to sleep more. Would you be interested in a job babysitting him?

TS: Well with all do respect sir, I am not a babysitter.

GM: Well with all do respect sir, you are not a coach either.

i'm a realist. sparano says its show me time for the players. he must include himself in that sentence. the last 2 years his teams mailed it in at the end of the season. all fighters have a plan until they get punched in the mouth. how do we respond this year? we dont know yet. i hope the team "buys in" to protecting their home turf. can't let the jets and pats come in and have their way! its time to back up our words or else its just talk.

Greg Z, There You Go, Go with the saying "SHOW ME", Thats getting into the spirit, I Say Mando should chang the Blog into "The Show me Blg".

Sorry(Show me Blog).

I agree with many that this team will be a force to be reckon with this season. But I'm growing increasingly anxious about the lack of progress at the OLine and ST. If these two remain their Achille's heel, then Sparano's days are numbered.

Too much respect for Jets on here. I'm willing to concede the Pats superiority--they've earned it. I'll also concede the Jets have been relevant the past 2 seasons, and we haven't. The problem the Jet trolls have to confront is this: since 2008 we've owned the Jets. 4-2, and it should have been 5-1. If you're so superior, why do we win head to head?

LMFAO! That's some funny stuff right there.

whats up ALoco how is that yssup soup treating you

i probably prefer that quiet resolve amongst the team to let their actions speak for themselves. in the NFL talk is cheap so you better back it up or you will look foolish. rex talks too much but he does back it up with afc titles. we gotta be ready to hit them in the mouth. vet leadership has been sorely missed;guys like JT will help but more are needed to tutor the young guys.

Somebody's gonna have to eat some crow once this season is done. Better dust off those recipes. Crow Pie? Baked Crow? Crow Alfedo? Lol!

Just think Sparano made a GREAT mediocre team. He will be fire this year because he lives and dies on Henne. Not something I would put my job on.

Hey finsinceforever. How long is that??

My thoughts:

I think either you or Fortman are "tweaking" quotes. Don't know which one of you is right, don''t care,

According to Fortman SpOrano:

“going to make a run” at the AFC East title, adding that anyone who overlooks his team “is probably going to make a big mistake,”

I'm not knocking your work in the slightest, but Fortman did take some negligable liberties, making SpOrano's "words" UNDERSTANDABLE.

Nonetheless, I like it. SpOrano who usually talks in circles, laid it out there. Apparently he's seeing things in practice that we don't.

It refreshing and encouraging at the same time.

(I hope he wasn't drunk when interviewed!)

I am surprised that Dimwit Owner Stephen Ross has not granted Superstar Quarterback Chad Henne a Multi-Million Dollar Extension....It only makes sense...He courted Orton...Did Not get him...now he should reward Henne....Ross Did That With Morono...He courted Harbaugh...When he could not get him...he rewarded the High School Reject Morono with an extension and more dollars....What A joke...Even CNN SI is on board stating that our running attack looks suspect...Bush has never been an every down back...our draft pick has disappointed..and Larry Johnson Is Worn...Cant Wait Till the three clowns are gone next year...Morono, Ireland, Henne...Ross Get Some Balls and Bring Somebody In That Has Pedigree....

this team has HAS been a team you cannot take lightly, which is awesome. It's the dang turnover ratio and special team breakdowns that kill us

once henne stops throwing INTs AND we start seeing what smith and Davis are capable, then I'll believe.

definitely should own the Jets again this season.

PAT? I wish they weren't our first game.

go dolphins!!

whats up odinseye

10-6 is more sensible, and still a reach(ask LV). Might get us into the Playoffs but have to see how Jets, Baltimore, Indianapolis perform.

Nothing wrong with this Economy(never was), just a bunch of bas..... trying to get our Confidence down.

I see people in celebration mode before the team has proven squat, thats all. Let them prove something and then I will become more optimistic.

BLOG HIT TROLL WTF?

Let me guess, you won't cheer this team whatsoever, but after they win a Championship you'll be the first one to go: I told you so! Awwwwwriiiiiight Miami.

Way to be a the text book example of a FAIRweather Fan. You arent deserving of the phrase, get a life and a new team to not cheer for while you're at it.

Another newspaper with another "poll". Do you trust Chad Henne? Who the hell are they or us Fans to trust/ not trust any Player? Besides, supposing we Fans don't trust him, is there any better option?

Dear Mr. Salguero

So I was doin some bong hits, I got a head rush, fell and bumped my head and had this dream.

I was a Miami Dolphin and I was alone sitting on the beach when all of a sudden the New England Patriots Tom Brady came up to me and kicked sand in my face then walked away with all the hot young girls.

I then looked down and noticed a Bazooka Joe bubblegum wrapper on the ground.

To my astonishment there on the bubblegum wrapper was a picture Bill Cowher.

He was all muscle bound and whatnot sayin how if I send him money he will teach me how to never get sand kicked in my face again, plus get all the young hot girls.

Should I send my money to Bill Cowher so I can get all the young hot girls and stop getting sand kicked in my face ?

Soiled :)

ArmandoSalguero

ArmandoSalguero Former Dolphins G Keith Sims says the Dolphins are now a zone blocking team and w/ Carey n Incognito as guards, the sweep game won't be good.

Now are you all going to call Keith Simms a Jet fan?

Posted by: oswald canola | August 26, 2011 at 09:54 AM

Simms is not a jest fan. It's just that you and Armando in yor quest to find negatives are showing your football ignorance. I don't mean ignorance as a cut down BTW, I'm just saying.

Simms is right in that zone blocking schemes run more inside and off tackle plays. I mean come on now, you really don't believe that ALL zone blocking teams don't run sweeps do you-LOL. When you zone block and you run sweeps it usually means you have TE's sealing and WR's providing a crack back block.

In yours and Armando's "QUEST" of negativity you fail to even realize that just maybe Daboll and SpOrano have decided to coach to their players strengths. Sorta like Shula would do. If his guards weren't strong pullers, he'd scheme it in. Make the most out of what he's got.

You know the things that wasn't done under Parcells and HenningS!

But a vowell and guess again-Sheesh!

I don't see much if any improvement in the O-line from last year. Even still, with Bush we might stand a chance. But that's predicated on Bush staying healthy AND Henne playing at least at the journeyman level.

2 big ifs.

see people in celebration mode before the team has proven squat, thats all. Let them prove something and then I will become more optimistic.

Why do people insist on trying to read between the lines on these posts and make false assumptions way off base?

When I said "Let them prove something", that means in real games, against good teams, like maybe a winning record at the bye? mid season??? That is not saying I need to wait for championship.

I agree with Sparono that his changes to the offense, personnel, coaching and spreading the field will make a huge difference. However Tony must realize that Chad Henne has a problem in going deep and playing well when it counts (on the 20 yard line or closer). So we really won't know until the regular season.
I should indicate that being in a predictable offense (old school from Bill Parcells)did not help him at all. Even Tom Brady would have an issue with last seasons predictable offense.
