Confidence is good ... now back it up, please

One of the things that aligns people such as Joe Namath, Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali and Pat Riley with folks like, say, Rex Ryan is they all make big, audacious statements about who they are and what they're about to do.

It could be argued that on the low end of that boldness totem pole, we find Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, who on Thursday had a definite opinion of where he and fellow starting corner Sean Smith rate among NFL starting duos.

"I'm going go (out) on the limb and say we're the best tandem in the league," Davis said.

But there's, there's Revis-Cromartie, there's the coming union of Asomugha and Samuels in Philly. There's my personal pick for top duo -- Williams and Woodson.

"Name all of them," Davis said. "I'm putting it out there, we're the best talent."

Well, I'd say the Miami tandem has a chance to become the best duo in the NFL. But it is quite safe to say -- even on a Dolphins fan-crazy blog -- that Davis and Smith definitely have not been the best duo in the NFL up to now.

Not when the two players combined for two interceptions last season.

Yesterday, by the way, was big-talk Thursday at Dolphins camp. That's great!

Even Tony Sparano, who is the most understated guy in Broward County according to a poll of Understated People of Broward, went about as far as he gets on chest pounding by saying the Dolphins will compete in the AFC East.

Wow!

No, seriously, coach said his team will "make a run at this thing."

"I can’t tell you how this thing is going to turn out one way or the other but I can tell you that the way this team works, the attitude that I see, the ingredients that we have right now all show me that this team is poised and ready to go here to make a run at this thing," Sparano said. "And I think that I’ve been pleased with what we’ve done it practice.  We aren’t going to back down from anybody in this division.  I don’t care who they are and whose out there.  Our team comes to compete every single week and they have.  This team will compete and will compete at a high level in this division.

"I think we’re one of the good teams in this division and I think anybody that doesn’t believe that probably going to make a big mistake.”

Your thoughts ...?

ArmandoSalguero Former Dolphins G Keith Sims says the Dolphins are now a zone blocking team and w/ Carey n Incognito as guards, the sweep game won't be good.

Now are you all going to call Keith Simms a Jet fan?

Posted by: oswald canola | August 26, 2011 at 09:54 AM

Simms is not a jest fan. It's just that you and Armando in yor quest to find negatives are showing your football ignorance.

Posted by: odinseye | August 26, 2011 at 01:12 PM

OK Mr. Odinseye. I'll just assume you are more of an expert on playing oline than Keith Simms. Yeah, sure. Got any oceanfront property in North Dakota to sell?

I put up a quote to show that just because someone makes a critical point, doesn't mean he is a Jet's fan.

Are you sniffing glue? Why so touchy? I quoted a FORMER DOLPHIN to show people can have other opinions without being Jet's fans.

Some bloggers here really really have shiit for brains no doubt about it.

When I said "Let them prove something", that means in real games, against good teams, like maybe a winning record at the bye? mid season??? That is not saying I need to wait for championship.

Posted by: oswald canola | August 26, 2011 at 01:15 PM

Oswald, fair enough. I was just cactching up and reading fast. I apologize for not considering that that's what you meant my bad.

As a fan I'm just trying to ride this wave of enthusiasm for as long as I can.

My apologees!

Fist Pump!

Slow down Oscar. I apologized for my short sightedness. Easy on the Shyt for Brains stuff. I didn't even go that far.

For the record, I never contested what Simms said. I mostly agree with his statement. What I contested was how you and Armando interpreted Simms stateent.

Simms football knowledge-EXCELLENT.

You and Armando's-Not so much ;)

PS: Oswald, too be honest, I thought you were the Blog Hit Troll initially.

But, after reading the logic and reasoning behind your last few posts, I have safely ruled that out-LOL.
Again, my apologees for my initial post!

odinseye, ok...all is cool. There seems to be a theme here you have to talk lollipops and candy canes or you are a jets fan. I was just trying to squash that but I guess that is just the way it is. Fans are touchy (see the last Raiders 9'rs game, bullet touchy)

Seems to me "making a run at this thing" is open to interpretation. I can't remember when my expectations have been lower.

odinseye...I didn't see your apology until after my previous post...timing issue! You are forgiven a second time now.

It's refreshing to hear Sparano and Davis pounding their chest and hyping the team up. It gets annoying hearing Rex Ryan and company do all the talking. It's about time the Dolphins did some talking of their own.

The greatest thing about the NFL is it's the only major sport where almost all of the teams in the league have a legitimate shot at winning a championship. That being said, NFL teams can be affected most by injuries and loss of key players.

The Phins have an excellent chance of winning the east if the coaches put their players in the position to win and we stay relatively healthy. (Your FG kicker cannot be your most valuable offensive weapon)

It will be won on the field however, not on TV or radio, or by reporters and bloggers. Let's get this party started already!

i believe bush can stay healthy if he is kept out of the return game. if he is strictly used in the offense he should be healthy the entire season.

Oswald, got it no problem.

I don't mind the posts that critique the Phins. I actually like them, sometimes I read stuff and it opens up new perspectives and ways to look at problems that I missed. I'm guilty, being the fan I am, I look through the rose colored glasses all to often.

What I can't stand is all the doom and gloom crap with no reasoning or logic.

DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!!

I LOVE IT!

Pro Football Focus ranked Smith as the eighth-best cornerback in 2010, while Davis followed just six spots behind.

When PFF released its Dolphins’ season preview Thursday, it wrote: “Finding a cornerback duo that is better … may be hard to do,” citing Smith’s 57.7 percent completion percentage against and Davis’ tackling ability against the run.

8th and 14th. If they hold on to some INT's and improve in their 3rd seasn, Davis' statement isn't all that far fetched.

If Reshad and Clemons do thier best Jack Tatum and Lester Hayes imitations, things could get good QUICK!

PFF ranked Smith 8th?

Wow! Homes better stick with the Harrpy Stuff!

The Dolphins should pound their chests a little bit.

People seem to forget that Mike Nolan is considered by many the best Def coach in the NFL.

the way i see it this year comes down to 2 things:

1. will the db's hold on to int's?

2. will the o-line block well for the run and the pass?

if these two fall into place the remainder will take care of itself.

I'm headlining at the County Fair tonight.

We're playing on the infield of the Race Track.

Gotta go get ready, I'm OUT!

ValHalla!!!!

While Davis and Smith are still almost too new in the league to have developed a statistical track-record as the best CB duo in the league based on interceptions, I think they have the talent. Although people look for interceptions as the best indicator for cornerback success, the fact is that not allowing receivers to ever catch the ball is even better. You can have a shut-down corner who never gets thrown to because his receiver is never open. Davis and Smith can do that, and people will start realizing how good they are when their interception statistics start catching up with their passes defensed statistics.

I think there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic. I think we have a very deep DL and will put a lot of pressure on QBs and now we have an LB corp that will match up well with NE, NY, and anybody else we play. I think our secondary continues to get incrementally better, another year in the system, etc...

The pats & jets have a lot of weapons, but remember, you don't have to outrun the bear, just the guy next to you, and I think that applies to our defense. You don't have to cover all of the pats weapons, all of the time, just long enough for the pressure to get to Brady.

The offense will be drastically improved and between the offense and defense I think they will win the field position battle more often than not. If the special teams can elevate their game to where they are a non-factor (i.e. don't give away the field position the offense and defense have earned) this team could easily win 2-3 games more than last year. But will that be enough...is the question.

Pragmatic Poster valid points but I dont se Jets as a threat and NE real weapons are there TE's that we need to worry bout. Put pressure on Brady and he gets frustrated and throws eractic as for Sanchez he is a chump . We beat ourselves when we play the Jets

Lobo, I think ocho cinco and welker are weapons.. Guarantee ocho has a career year.. For the fins sake I hope not but he's stll good and he now has one of yhe best throwing to him

Did anyone see Andy Dalton look like Johnny Unitas yesterday against the Carolina Panthers? Newsflash...Panthers are a really bad team. Maybe we shouldn't of been too quick to give Henne all that credit last week against the Panthers. I'm afraid we're going to see a trainwreck tommorow at Tampa...Especially since Sporano does not beleive in QB competition.

Sounds like Ross put a performance clause in his contract for number of season tickets sold in the preseason before the reality check of facing the Patriots on MNF sets in with the fan base. Either that or he just saw Rex on last year's Hard Knocks. Keep selling it, Tony!

Lobo, NE's TEs are one of the threats that was addressed by bringing in Burnett, IMO.

I hope you're right about the jets not being a threat, but expect them to be a playoff team.

Ochocinco is now Ocho-stinko. The Jets will be weaker on the o-line and still don't rush the passer without blitzing like crazy. The key is Henne, if he plays even reasonably well we will be a force. If not, look for another mediocre 7-9 or 8-8 campaign.

pafinsfan86 and Pragmatic Poster I'm not worried bout Jets I think they are overrated and let Ocho and Welker get one good hit from Reshad and its over

What else is he going to say..."I expect us to be 7-9 and I'll be looking for work after the season"???

"If you guys think that we are going to get punked twice again by the Patriots by a score of 41-14 and 38-7, then I think you are mistaken. I really do... this year we are going to hang in there and be competitive in this thing until the very end. I really believe that."

Yeah, keep instilling that bold confidence, Tony. And keep pumping that fist!

This is the AFC, Gurantee that Balt,Pats,Steelers,Jets,Indy,Chargers all have 11 wins at least.

Posted by: FP4FGs | August 26, 2011 at 10:28

I have to respectfully disagree with you here, Fist Pump. Indy will not have Manning all year, will struggle early and maybe all year. Jets have regresssed this year, I don't think they'll win more than 9 or 10 games. Chargers have underperformed for years, despite great talent. The others? Maybe, maybe not.

THE BRA1N I agree 1 of those games last year our special teams killed us

Posted by: Hypnotoad | August 26, 2011 at 02:48 PM

Yeah, Henne gets NO CREDIT!

Why you ask?

Because Andy Dalton played well against Carolina?

OK, sound reasoning and logic there, I'm IN!

PS: Going open the show with my best Jimi Immitation on Red House! The little Kitty Kats will be thinking: What the he ll is that Old Guy PLAYING?

There's a Red House over Yonder................

ValHalla!!!!

Miadolphin:

If they go 7-9 Sporano will be fist pumping his way to the unemployment office. I think to shake things up he should try shaving his ears and neck hair. You know, sort of the reverse of a playoff beard for hockey players.

VD and Smith have potential, but they are not the top duo. I would say, more like top 10.

As for the Dolphins, we have the potential to fizzle out and get 4 wins if our OL suffers a few injuries and our D doesn't hold up to the hype, but I think the changes they made in the offseason certainly improve this team's speed. I mean, he is you and raw, but if Gates can be our Mike Wallace, our defense becomes as dominant as they potentially could be and Henne is the best he can be (which is probably 12 to 15 best in the league), we are better than the jets and in the playoffs.

By the way, for those that keep track of such things, I've changed by Twitter name from LipsInToronto to Mike_Lips.

Greg Z-
You were VERY generous earlier with Rex Ryan. You said he backed up his big mouth with 2 AFC titles. Not so fast. He lost both AFC title games.

Please don't give Rex Ryan and the stinking Jets any extra credit. They YAP too much as it is.

And by the way, I believe the Fins will win an AFC title again before the Jets do. GO FINS!

The only 11+ win teams in the AFC are New England and Baltimore. The Jets look like a 9-10 win team as do the Steelers. Indy will be below .500 and the chargers will be right around that mark too.

As for Sporano, let Daboll run the offense and don't meddle with your conservative crap. Also, be careful not to pull a lat muscle fist pumping too much. Finally, that whole tee wolf thing you got going with the ear and neck hair, please get it waxed.

Fired Sparano !!!! He's been saying that for how long now ?? The last two seasons suxxx...

After 5092 snaps we only had 3 mental mistakes. Thats good enough for me, winning games is another story.

Miami 10 -6

Number 1 Defense in the NFL

Pro Bowl Vontae Davis

Sean Smith Defensive Player of the Year

If Reggie Bush stays healthy...

Look for an MVP type year from him, and an EXPLOSIVE offense for the Fins.

If Chad Henne also blossoms into a capable QB...

The Fins win the AFC East.

If the Defense also starts catching all those INTs...

The Fins go deep into the playoffs and contend for a Title, to everyone's shock.

For the Vince Young lovers.........VY is losing the #2 QB slot to Mike Kafka in Philie. Per ProFootBall.com. Nice call guys.

We may have the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Statistically, they are very good and could be even better this year. We don't know. Teams were too busy throwing to Tight Ends and swing passes to Running Backs, or trying to stuff it up the middle, on us last year for anyone to really know. That's probably not going to happen this year with the inside linebackers that we now have. A weakness has been shored up.
Quarterbacks live and die based upon the Offensive Scheme. Hopefully, Daboll will put Henne in a position to succeed this year.
Addition by subtraction. No more Channing Crowder. No more Dan Henning. No more Ricky and Ronnie. No more Wildcat. No more Bill Parcells!
It's gonna be a great year for Dolphin Football!
GO FINS!!!

Michael = Craig M

Really Wild Child were you Vince Young proponent, good call lol. Stupid.

Craig Micheal

Convenient of you not to report how well Plaxico is doing in NY. Does your mommy still shake your peni after you pee?

Oh Wild Child or who ever you are, and we know who you are, Shalala still has here job. I thought you said you would give here a week last Friday.

Michael-

It's not so much that Kafka is beating out VY. VY hasn't fully learned the Eagles complicated offense yet.

SHOCKING...he's been in camp for a few weeks already. He must be a retard, right?

Guiness Book of World Records

Only person to never have been wrong: Craig M

(unverified but he has never once admitted to being wrong about anything so we take his word for it)

dude, owswald,

you aren't being a realist, you're being a downright pessimist. if you don't have any faith in the players to perform.. go root for someone else

So you're saying he has no brains like you. That would have made him a great QB here. LMAO at you.

finsfan

Michael Craig M will tell you Henne is only in his second year as a starter and deserves more time, but wants to say VY should pick up a new complex offense in 3 weeks.

Logical no?

Vince Young stinks. He is a mental midget and throws like a girl. Prediction: next draft Dolphins take Landry Jones or Matt Barkley and Jeff Fisher will be coaching this team and someone else will be running the entire football operation.

It's been verified that you make too many mistakes right. Very naive, not a lot of brains.

I do, if he's as good as you say he is. he should have. He wouldn't have started here either because HE HAS NO BRAINS. Got it brainless.

Michael, I guess we know what the M stands for in Craig M, hehee.

Where's Shalala know it all. You said she's be gone by now because you know how things work. RIGHT>

I'm headlining at the County Fair tonight.

We're playing on the infield of the Race Track.

Translation, I just woke up with another hangover, Iam going back to bed for a few hours., Then going to get dinner consiting of 18 beers.

WOW...Error on the VY report. Like him or not, doesn't matter. He's irrelevant to me now, since he definitely WON'T be playing for the Fins this year.

And Rex, I hope we do draft a 1st rd QB in the next draft.

Rex Ryan's Bowel Movement, absolutely right.

Craig Michael

Maybe you can explain to us why the GM is letting his prize QB go into his last season without even offering him a contract extension? And why is Henne the lowest paid QB in the division? Why does the back up Moore make MORE than Henne? Why does Thigpen make more than Henne as a backup in Buffalo?

I guess you see these things as a vote of confidence.
