Confidence is good ... now back it up, please

One of the things that aligns people such as Joe Namath, Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali and Pat Riley with folks like, say, Rex Ryan is they all make big, audacious statements about who they are and what they're about to do.

It could be argued that on the low end of that boldness totem pole, we find Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, who on Thursday had a definite opinion of where he and fellow starting corner Sean Smith rate among NFL starting duos.

"I'm going go (out) on the limb and say we're the best tandem in the league," Davis said.

But there's, there's Revis-Cromartie, there's the coming union of Asomugha and Samuels in Philly. There's my personal pick for top duo -- Williams and Woodson.

"Name all of them," Davis said. "I'm putting it out there, we're the best talent."

Well, I'd say the Miami tandem has a chance to become the best duo in the NFL. But it is quite safe to say -- even on a Dolphins fan-crazy blog -- that Davis and Smith definitely have not been the best duo in the NFL up to now.

Not when the two players combined for two interceptions last season.

Yesterday, by the way, was big-talk Thursday at Dolphins camp. That's great!

Even Tony Sparano, who is the most understated guy in Broward County according to a poll of Understated People of Broward, went about as far as he gets on chest pounding by saying the Dolphins will compete in the AFC East.

Wow!

No, seriously, coach said his team will "make a run at this thing."

"I can’t tell you how this thing is going to turn out one way or the other but I can tell you that the way this team works, the attitude that I see, the ingredients that we have right now all show me that this team is poised and ready to go here to make a run at this thing," Sparano said. "And I think that I’ve been pleased with what we’ve done it practice.  We aren’t going to back down from anybody in this division.  I don’t care who they are and whose out there.  Our team comes to compete every single week and they have.  This team will compete and will compete at a high level in this division.

"I think we’re one of the good teams in this division and I think anybody that doesn’t believe that probably going to make a big mistake.”

Your thoughts ...?

rich not sure if your aware but Sanchez rating 70.3 5433 yards 27 TD 33 INT playoff contender, Henne rating 74.3 6700 yards 24 TD 33 INT no playoffs. We have a better QB then the Jest and havent won. Its not just QB its total package . This year I believe we have the total package

Watch Larry Johnson prove everyone wrong. He will lead this team with rushing TDS.

The thing that has me concerned is Columbo. Columbo at RT could be the undoing of the team this year and serve as the final nail in the coffin of Sparano.

Columbo is widely viewed as one of the worst RT's in the league and would not be starting for the majority of the teams.

If I recall correctly it was Columbo who wiffed on his blocking assignment that caused Romo to be injured and out the rest of the season, plus he is not a good run blocker either.

If Columbo does not play well and the Dolphins offensive line breaks down at his spot then I dont see how Sparano survives

Hopefully the people over at walterfootball have it wrong because they have the Dolphins winning 3 games this year and being the #1 pick in the 2012 draft.

Oregon Dolphin fan I agree about Columbo but walterfootball is on crack

Lobo,

I'm not agreeing with Walterfootball. I dont see it that way. However, with reviews like that out there it is no surprise that this blog sees so many haters.

Many people have a hard time thinking for themselves.

2012- Draft!

1. Bengals
2. Seahawks
3. Dolphins.

And it will go just like that.

Oregon Dolphin fan in a way you cant blame them , we did it to ourselves. We have the most impatient asbackwards fan base. We are to the NFL the new Detroit . People will underestimate us and they will pay for it . Last year Vontae and Wake were underestimated and by years end they were feared. As a team we will do the same

Simone,

'and it will go just like that'

dude, you dont know Sh*t.

not one game has been played yet. You really come off as ignorant making statements like that.

ODF

For some reason all the "experts" seem to think that the dolphins have gotten a lot worse.

They went 7-9 last year with the 3rd worst offense (by pts/g) in the league. Unless they somehow degrade to the worst offense of all time, I can't imagine they will only win 3 games with the defense being as solid as it is.

oregon,

Having a BAD are you ? YOU don't no SH?t Ass Hole.

Lobo,

I agree with the underestimating only because the national perception is so bad.

But actual coaches know not to underestimate. Most teams do not play the bruising style.

The key will be well Columbo of course and most importantly Dabol.

Last year opponent's knew the Dolphins would position for FG's courtesy of Mr FG and Henning. This year the team may actually attempt to score more TD's.

I lamented the inept offensive approach the last 2 years in here because the D is good and could be even better if they were able to play with a lead sometimes.

With a more aggressive approach the D may be in that position occasionally.

We are getting close to actually seeing what this offense looks like.

Boardwalk,

I agree.

Simone,

More gibberish from you I see. What are you 12 years old? Your really sad.

...The reason everyone thinks we will stink is simple. Do I have to say his name? The topic has been beaten like a drum here, so no sense in getting to deep.

The lasting memories of Henne are the way he played in the second half of last year. He may have been the worst staring qb in the NFL by the end of last season(based on his second half performance)..The pundits-experts-F.A.G.S.(Football Anaylist Guys) have no reason to think that magically Henne is going to be a different guy. Why would they? Not their job.

If Henne gets off to a hot start, their tunes will change. And it will be this incredible turnaround that nobody saw coming(outside of Phin fans)..Who cares what people say. Outside of the team, and the fans...It doesn't matter one bit. This team needs to earn respect before it is just handed to them.

Oregon,

You must be, 5-years old ? Terrible , Just Terrible. A future Dropout here you come. SISSY.

List of blog assailed and fake fans

1. nome
2.Marc
3. Simeone says - fagboy

Oregon Dolphin fan I agree man . I think our offense will surprise . If they can control the ball like last week and keep our monster d rested then teams are in for a rude awakening

DD,

You make some good points there. We know why Henne looked bad at the end of last year. Well at least the fans that are honest in assessing what was going on around him.

Henne is a middle of the road QB with a career passer rating better than the dirty snachez, but until he shows more he will feel the brunt of it.

Now me and my mom are gonna go share some man meat
I get sloppy seconds
Thanks mom

Rachel,

Make my body your human couch. And sit on my face first.

Sorry Craig, I gave Rachel the boot this morning when I left to go fishing.

I was still so buzzed when I got to the launch, the Charter Guy didn't even want to let me on the boat.

Damn Canadians!!!!

Lobo,

the real key is scoring TD's. last year the Henne moved the team between the 20's yet it obviously broke down after that and resulted an way too many FG's.

I am still blown away by the Sparnao 'I took a long look in the mirror' quote.

I am hopeful I will no longer be able to call him Mr.FG after this year.

And here I thought Henne had the courage to play hurt..last part of the season.Silly me!

It is an arms race in the AFC East. Brady is here and not going anywhere, unless the Dolphins D breaks him this year, yet with Brady the chetriouts will put up 20+ a game.

If you are going to beat them anytime soon then the Dolphins have to score TD's as well.

Oregon Dolphin fan I agree and I can respect Sparanos look in the mirror. When your used to doing things a certain way change is hard . At least he is willing to make the change to win . This is a guy who told the team that he would lose weight for them and came in better shape then some of the players. As for getting stuck in the 20's I think Reggie and hopefully LJ can change that

Between drive killing wildcat plays and other stupid calls. I put more of the fault on the OC than Sparano's choice to play for FGs at the wrong time.

Oregan fan! do you know were we out of state fans can watch the game one-line?

..Oregon. IMO. Passer rating is a total waste of a stat. For all of Sanchez' faults(and he has a ton) He is able to make plays when the game is on the line that Henne hasn't. Seriously. This may sting, but who do you trust more with 1 possession? Henne, or the Dirty One? Rothelisberger is similar. He can stink for 3 quarters. When it comes time to put up he is usually money.

I bring this up because both these QB's have very good defenses. We are supposed to have a unit that is pretty good. This should keep us in a lot of games. Henne doesn't have to be perfect for 4 quarters for us to win. He will have to be able to elevate his game for the final 15 minutes..That's it. He can be average for 3/4's of the game, and we should have a chance each week..That is why Sanchez is looked at as a better player. The numbers are poor. But he plays well when his team needs him.

Darryl Dunphy I cant argue that , you make a valid point

THANKS LOBO!!!!!!!!!!!!

socalfan,

I was about to answer and looks like Lobo already did.

I started off by coming in here to see the posted links. 1st row has worked for me.

My girlfriend and I usually head to the sports bar. Occasionally the Dolphins are shown on normal tv too amazingly enough.

Darryl

Doesn't a team NEED its quarterback for the whole game?

If dirty sanchez actually played good for the whole game then the jests wouldn't need any last minute heroics. The same applies to Henne. Control the game earlier and you make things easier for your team later.

That is how the patriots won so many games with their bend but don't break defense last year.

What the hell is your problem?!?!?!?!? You are suppose to be writing FOR the Dolphins you idiot! Why not try doing a piece about LIKING the new attitude instead of bashing the players of this cities team! YOU SUCK!!!! This city cares more about the Dolphins and Hurricanes then anything else, and the garbage Miami Herald is constantly critisizing when they should be writing positive. Are you trying to get people to stop buying your paper? You are worse then Nevin Shapiro, you are the SCUM OF THE EARTH! Why don't you move to New York where your articles will actually mean something.

DD, ya ever think that maybe Sanchez has not stepped up at critical times that it could have been the other players on the team?

DD,

I believe Sanchez ability to scramble really helps him 'in those kind of situations'. Henne just does not have that and may never.

Danny was not nimble but he had that pocket awareness that allowed him to avoid the rush some.

The other aspect that I feel is dramatically different is the coaching style.

It seems that Rex is alot more loose than Sparano and it rubs off on the young QB's. Henne is super tight and I feel it is directly relate able to Sparnao being super tight to the point of choking.

Perhaps with the new ability to make an audible at the line of scrimmage (Henning/Sparano did not allow this last year) and having some variety in passing attempts (more than only 5 step drops)Henne will be able to come through in those kind of situations a bit better.

..Boardwalk. I wasn't saying that Henne can completley dissapear every game and we will be alright. What I was saying is that he doesn't have to be perfect. He can make mistakes. Look at the 2 QB's I mentioned. There are a ton of games they are poor for a portion of the game. Ben takes sacks, throws picks..looks bad. The Dirty one is innacurate, eats hot dogs, goes to Beiber concerts. But both can elevate their games when the game is on the line..Rothlesberger much more then Sanchez.

Of Course it would be great if Henne could play consistant for 4 quarters for 16 games. This isn't going to happen..Not being a naysayer, this is just unreasonable to believe. So, on those days where he is "off" he only has to be good in situations. My point wasn't about the strategy for the whole year..Play like shite for 3 quarters, then play all time in the 4th..It was. If Henne can find a way to play better in the 4th quarter, our defense will keep us in a lot of games. We should be able to win some this year. Think about all of the games we were close last year. Only to suck a donut in the later minutes.

The rapist is a big QB. I believe that makes a huge difference in a QB's ability to make plays. The bigger QB sees the field better and he can avoid shrug off the rush better, thus allowing for the making of that big play at the end of a game.

I am hopeful about Henne but Henne is not that big or elusive. Eventually the Dolphins need to move into the modern era and find a J Freeman/rapist/C Newton type QB.

DD

The end of game stuff I can't attribute only to Henne.

There were a few times where on the previous drive the dolphins elected to kick a field goal instead of going for a td. After the opponents scored a td right away, Henne was forced into a more difficult situation where his chances of success were much lower than if they had been more aggressive earlier.

Mike,

I have to concur. As I posted last night(my ex actually typed it and hi-jacked me)Armando startd this blog entry by mentioning Rex "the human blow hole" Ryan in the same breath as Babe Ruth, Ali, and Riley! Disgusting.

If that's not bad enough, he conviently omits any mention of the fact these others had EARNED their right to being boistrous.

WTF has Rex Ryan ever won? Other than being a paper champ, he simply ain't. Mando showed some true colors with this one, not too mention a severe case of a short sighted lack of Knowledge.

Ryan in the same breath as Ruth and Ali? Get the F-ck outta here with that shyt!

Sorry Armando, but if sports writing was quarterbacking you would grade out worse than Henne and the even worse: Sanchez!

Boardwalk,

I have to agree. The positioning for FG's just snowballs on a team. And it takes a psychological toll too as the Dolphins D and offense knows that once a team scores a TD on you it is going to take two perfect drives to get within a point.

I hate the FG/ playing not to lose approach.

DD,

I have to agree that Henne needs to improve in the 4th quarter. As a QB you have to learn how to finish. Plain and simple, Henne needs to improve-PERIOD.

Having said that, I have to take exception in regards to RedZone play. You have to take into consideration who is calling the plays in the red zone and maybe MOST importantly, whose idea it was to not let Henne audible at all, ESPECIALLY in the red zone where the field shrinks.

I can't put it all on HenningS, but I'd be safe in saying he gets the larger part of the blame.

Last year, as soon as we were in field goal range you see, feel and taste the safe play, non-attacking conservative style take over. In short, you could see we were playing for the field goal.

Add in the running on and off the field for the pussycat and it looked absolutely redundant. If you want your quarterback to grow and excell in the red zone, espcially a young QB, you have to let him PLAY in the red zone.

This fact continually escaped HenningS.

Greatdane, Boardwalk...Of course it isn't all on the quarterback. But that is not how it works when people evaluate these guys. WE all know they get to much credit for wins...Too much blame for losses. Comes with the territory. Those two guys I give some credit because they make plays. That is on them. We can make every excuse in the world for Henne(and some are valid) He came up short last year more times then not.

...The playcalling in the redzone was fraudulant, absent, and akin to stepping on a rusty nail..I agree.

I have talked about this before. The Buffalo game was a turning point for this franchise. Henne was awful all game.Like we have discussed today. When it counted most in quarter 4. He was outstanding. Leading the team on the game winning drive. henning took him out in favor of a wildcat play that put us in negative down and distance...That was that. Confidence, rythm , any chance taken away by a madman.

After the 1st Buffalo game I recall reading an interview with henning in which he stated that he called 3 deep pass plays all in max protection (the efficiency of that can be debated) but he pointed out that 2 of the 3 plays were blown up before they could even develop.

And that was before the rash of offensive line injuries!

QB's, RB's and WR's without an offensive line able to block and protect are useless.

DD,
