One of the things that aligns people such as Joe Namath, Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali and Pat Riley with folks like, say, Rex Ryan is they all make big, audacious statements about who they are and what they're about to do.
It could be argued that on the low end of that boldness totem pole, we find Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, who on Thursday had a definite opinion of where he and fellow starting corner Sean Smith rate among NFL starting duos.
"I'm going go (out) on the limb and say we're the best tandem in the league," Davis said.
But there's, there's Revis-Cromartie, there's the coming union of Asomugha and Samuels in Philly. There's my personal pick for top duo -- Williams and Woodson.
"Name all of them," Davis said. "I'm putting it out there, we're the best talent."
Well, I'd say the Miami tandem has a chance to become the best duo in the NFL. But it is quite safe to say -- even on a Dolphins fan-crazy blog -- that Davis and Smith definitely have not been the best duo in the NFL up to now.
Not when the two players combined for two interceptions last season.
Yesterday, by the way, was big-talk Thursday at Dolphins camp. That's great!
Even Tony Sparano, who is the most understated guy in Broward County according to a poll of Understated People of Broward, went about as far as he gets on chest pounding by saying the Dolphins will compete in the AFC East.
Wow!
No, seriously, coach said his team will "make a run at this thing."
"I can’t tell you how this thing is going to turn out one way or the other but I can tell you that the way this team works, the attitude that I see, the ingredients that we have right now all show me that this team is poised and ready to go here to make a run at this thing," Sparano said. "And I think that I’ve been pleased with what we’ve done it practice. We aren’t going to back down from anybody in this division. I don’t care who they are and whose out there. Our team comes to compete every single week and they have. This team will compete and will compete at a high level in this division.
"I think we’re one of the good teams in this division and I think anybody that doesn’t believe that probably going to make a big mistake.”
Your thoughts ...?

Socalfan,
Mostly I'm Dolphin supporter.
I'll support Henne THIS YEAR, it's just that the Honey moon is OVER!
Just like MOST PHIN Fans, I was hoping Henne would develop a lot sooner. As soon as Hennings was brought in I knew there would be a problem, and I posted on this from day 1. Still I hoped Henne would somehow make it despite HenningS.
I'm still going to spport WHOEVER lines up under center for the Phins and seeing how Daboll is head ad shoulder above the "declining years" of Hennings, I'm catiously optimistic that Henne can get it done.

To all dolphin fans thats hates henne well just like you i hate him too. But do u remenber a time when he was decent. He was ! Thats when we had a decent o line. So less than henne the ligne need to have a.great year. Yes henne doesnt go thru progression. If your ol is not giving u protection u be quick to get rid of the ball too= MISTAKE INT. So we will go as far as the o line take us. As far as pats go daboll team woop him last year with less talent 2 weeks before they blews us out last year. This team record is in the hand of the OL. Henne can make all the throws. So lets be optimistic about the OL and be patient with henne. At this staff have made a great effort to improve the line. LETS GO PHIN

It's a little late in the year for sucklings. To get the perfect ones you have to get them earlier do to their mating habits(20 to 30 pounds is perfect.
I have an End of the Summer Party every year and we roast a pig. This year were goin to roast a full grown and the smallest one my neighbor has(he's weighing in at about 50 pounds right now).
I'm roasting the big one regular, but the little one I'm going to stuff with potatoes, onions, carrotts and parsnips and roast him under ground.
Viking Warrior Style!!!!

Their families usually come to my parties and they always pitch in.

DD,
THANK YOU, AND WHAT ABOUT THIS CHEESE BURATA , IS IT MOZZARELLA OR SOME THING ELSE ?
HOW MUSH TO PAY FOR A 30 Ib PIG ?
Posted by: ALoco | August 27, 2011 at 05:07 PM
Aloco....Burrata is a real young-fresh mozzerella. It has the consistancy of a custard. It tastes just like rich cream, and is silky smooth. Way better then "fresh mozzerella" even the stuff that is artisinal..
The pigs were free..supplied by the brides family. I didn't ask how much they sell them for, as these were raised for the occasion.

ALOCO...If you want, I can trck down the web address for the purveyor I get the Burrata from. They come in 4 and 6, 8oz balls. They are relativley cheap...except for the shipping. As they make the cheese fresh, the seller demands that all cheese is overnighted to guarantee freshness. The Burrata will last about a week, then it loses it's consistancy.. Not many Burrata mkers in this country

Darryl,
How long ago did you hook up the suckling pigs for the wedding party.
I'm asking becasue I was curious as to how big they were.
I read your original "suckling" post about a week ago or so. That's what made me think to include a suckling in my pig roast party(thanks BTW)this year. When I checked with my neighbor, the smallest one he had was around 50 pounds.
Apparently the sucklings grow pretty fast.
Posted by: odinseye | August 27, 2011 at 05:39 PM

Oregon,
My last post was for YOU.
Posted by: Craig M | August 27, 2011 at 05:44 PM
...Odin. The pigs were a little over 25 lbs.. Those IMO are the most desirable. 50 lbs is pretty large for what I would consider a suckling pig, but to each their own. We halved them and cooked them in an open pit with dripping pans underneath. Sea salt, rosemary sprigs to baste with the fat, and pepper. Then the last 20 minutes rub the skin with an herb paste so it doesn't burn...After we broke them down just some sherry vinegar, and a little of the roasting fat...dinner.
Aloco..I thought, and could be wrong that a suckling pig was considered a pig that was less then 30 lbs..Not 100 percent. I think the term suckling pig perhaps is a term that was adopted by restaraunts to put a higher price on the menu..Could be wrong.

All right, I love the 'Phins as much as anybody, and more than most. I was born the year of their undefeated season, and when I take an oath I put my hand on my copy of "My Life in Football" instead of a bible. 'Nuff said.
My take on it is this. Yes, we have an elite receiver, a great slot receiver, a true deep threat speed wise (reminds me of Ginn, which I don't know whether to celebrate or mourn, have to see him actually catch a ball first), and we now have a rb with some real moves and speed (now let's see his durability).
Thomas however does not look like he's going to live up to his promise, and LJ hasn't shown fans anything worth seeing since he ran behind one of the best O-lines in the history of football (KC '05 & '06). Hell, put Willie Roaf and the rest of that line in front of me, and I could rush for 1500 yds and 20 td.
Still our weakest links before the season were QB play, and, self appointed best or not, our secondary. Sure they were good cover corners, but they looked like they were afraid of the ball, not hungry for it. How many picks did they have again? Two, and not two each, two between them.
As far as Henne, at first I was pissed we didn't pick up Orton, as he would have been a nice middle ground between the clean smart play of Pennington and the strong arm of Henne. Orton doesn't have a cannon, but it's stronger than Pennington's and he is damn smart and consistent. Henne has two problems, he never seemed to put the ball where a receiver could make a play after the catch, and he somehow over two years could not learn how to throw a touch pass. It was all fastballs, all the time. Brian Hartline somehow managed through feats of superhuman body control and quickness to be the one receiver on the team to make plays after the catch. And then there were the interceptions, ohhhhhh the interceptions.
In the first preseason game it looked like more of the same to tell you the truth. Bad throws, bad decisions, ugly dumb football. BUT in the second game he actually showed some dynamism and showed me he could throw something other than a fastball, and could get a ball to his receivers where they would not get killed after the catch and have a chance get up-field with it.
Reservations, sure, it was the second preseason game, and we were playing Carolina, aka the new Detroit, who have not been able to pressure a passer since the departure of Peppers. We'll have to see if Henne's game two performance was a result of growth on his part, or because he had all day and no one in his face. Hell, I can throw a pretty ball when I'm out playing catch with my son, and I'm not getting paid an NFL salary.
Call me hopeful, but with reservations. Like someone said, we'll see on Sept. 12th where we stand in comparison to a top-notch team. We'll also see a little tonight, as you can bet Henne will see a lot more pressure from the Bucs than the Pussycats could muster.
Go 'Phins!!!!
