Dolphins announce signing of RB Larry Johnson

The Dolphins have announced on their twitter feed they have signed running back Larry Johnson. So much for those tentative first-and-goal runs.

Johnson, 31 years old, hasn't had a productive season since 2008 when he gained 874 yards. That was also the same year the stuff hit the fan for him. He was suspended by the Chiefs for violating unspecified team rules. He was also suspended by commissioner Roger Goodell for one game that season. Hmmm.

The next year Johnson was critical of Chiefs coach Todd Haley, which as you might guess, led to his suspension for conduct detrimental to the club. The Chiefs cut Johnson when his suspension ended.

Johnson bounced to the Bengals in 2009 in late November and then went to the Redskins in March of 2010 as a free agent. That didn't last. He was cut in September and was out of work the rest of the season.

Johnson has been arrested four times since 2003 on various assault charges against women. In 2003, he was arrested for assault and domestic battery for brandishin a gun at his then-girlfriend, during an argument at his home. The charges were dropped when Johnson agreed to participate in a domestic violence diversion program. In 2005, he was again arrested for assault when a woman accused Johnson of pushing her to the ground, but the case was dropped after the alleged victim failed to appear in court for three different hearing.

His third arrest for assault came on February 24, 2008, after allegedly pushing a woman's head at a nightclub that night. On October 10, 2008, Johnson was arrested for the fourth time and charged with one count of non-aggravated assault for allegedly spitting a drink in a woman's face at a Kansas City nightclub on October 11. Johnson tried to flee the scene but police officers tackled him.

The Dolphins have been in the market for a running back for some time. Today they worked out Clinton Portis. They also worked out Tiki Barber three weeks ago, around the time they worked out Johnson.

They are obviously:

Not comfortable with their current RB situation, which has rookie Daniel Thomas behind Reggie Bush. A couple of weeks ago, coach Tony Sparano admitted in a column I wrote that he was "nervous" about the running back situation.

Miami's running back corps delivered an unspectacular performance around the goal line on four first-and-goal runs against the Panthers, probably pushed the team over the edge.

Is Johnson going to be the guy who gained over 1,700 yards in both 2005 and 2006? No.

But I guess checking him out for the next couple of weeks cannot hurt a team looking to upgrade in the backfield.

Alex Jones is working for u, of course he is lining his pocket on the way and gets a bit dramatic

However he has intestinal fortitude and challenges the rampant government and corporate corruption& lies

and man, do they HATE to be confronted with the TRUTH

Home....

I agree....with everything you said @ 12:42.....

Correct on all fronts....

Lex Hilliard is a good rb LOL?! This dude should be playing full back. He is as slow and stiff as they come. If he every has to line up as a featured runner for us we will be the laughing stock of the league. At this rate...those days are on the horizon. We have too many holes on this team. Safety...wr.rb..qb...ol. Can't sniff playoffs with these issues.

What a winner. Winner winner chicken dinner. Why not Pex? He just shot his own ass.

Those who are screaming about re-signing Ricky or Ronnie - get a grip. Ronnie goes down when hit with a feather and Ricky just doesn't have the pop he once had. Johnson is a bruiser, hopefully with something to prove.

I've been saying that they should sign a veteran for weeks, but not LJ...

Not so sure about this move..

Maybe when were on the goal line trying to score we can have the cheerleaders stand behind the endzone and flip him off. =D

Craig, on the "troublemaker" issue, don't you think it's poor decision-making to overlook Santonio Holmes (last year) due to his "problems" (which amounted to him smoking weed), not wanting to give up a 5th-rd pick for a guy who would have been the best (or 2nd best) WR on our team, but bringing in a guy who's had a laundry list of problems on and off the field in his career?

If you're a player on the team, listening to Ireland's spew his idiocy about what the Dolphins are trying to be (as far as model citizens), and then seeing this guy on your team. How much weight do you think those players put behind his words now?

I don't care, this is a minor, minor issue. But unless they had a better reason not to sign Holmes last year (or at least show interest in him), I really can't understand this change of heart. And Holmes is MUCH more of a playmaker than Johnson will ever be (at this point in his career). Just doesn't make sense to me (other than just to put a fire under Hilliard, who, in my opinion, has nothing to worry about since Sparano said he's the best special teams player we have, and Johnson was actually cut from the Redskins last year in order to make room for a younger RB who contributed on special teams).

DID YOU SEE CUBEN POSTS WITH DRINK ODIN EARLY THIS MORNING(4AM)FUNNY STUF, ODIN THINKS CUBEN IS A IMPOSTER WHILE HE CONYINUES TO IMPOSTER,ODIN IS GOOD GUY TILL HE DRINKS,THEN HE SOUNDS LIKE THE PLUMBER FROM BERGIN COUNTY.

DC are you comparing holmes to marshall or johnson?

"DRUNK" ODIN

NJ, with all due respect, WHAT could Johnson have to prove? It's not like he's expecting to make a comeback to his prime-days. The guy now is a safety valve, with a limited role. He'll never be what he once was, and that's understandable. So, it's not like he wants to prove he's a good back (he already proved that long ago). But he's past his prime now. Only thing he'd be playing for is a paycheck, that's it. He wouldn't have ANYTHING to prove (you think a player with his checkered past really wants to prove he's a stand-up guy? No way.).

HOLMES,MARSHEL,AND JOHNSON,SOUNDS LIKE A LAW FIRM FROM BOSTON.

"Johnson is a bruiser, hopefully with something to prove."

Odinseye, that you?

Listen, Johnson had something to prove last year too...couldn't do it.

I suspect Ireland just wanted a veteran big back in camp to show Thomas a few tricks. Johnson's just training camp fodder and will be gone after the last preseason game, imho.

Move along, folks...nothing to see here.

Dolphins management has to be the worst in the league for 3 main reasons:
1) Not addressing the QB situation (Henne sucks)
2) Not re-signing the 2 beastly RB's (Ron & Rick)
3) Re-signing Sporano

Go Jets...........

Boulder, neither. I'm saying Santonio is MUCH more of a playmaker than Johnson. And if the FO looked past Johnson's troubled past (on and off the field), I'm wondering why they wouldn't do the same with Santonio, who had WAY MORE upside than Johnson (if that's the reason they didn't even show a wiff of interest in Holmes). It wasn't like we didn't need WR help that year. And he didn't cost much (5th-round pick, big whup). He had a 4-game suspension, that's it. Could have sat and STILL led the team in receptions for the final 12 games.

Johnson is a thug and they plan to use him as a thug on short yardage situations to keep their investment in Thomas & Bush safe.

What's up with Hillard?
How about Clay & Polite?....these guys are battering rams that have pretty big bodies?

I get it...but the optics make Ireland look foolish.

guy sounds charming. Still wish we could have held onto Ricky.

IF JONSON PLAYED WITH DALAS THE GREAT COACH SOPRANO WOULD PICK HIM UP,BUT HE DIDNT,END OF DISCUSION ARMANDO,WHAT WILL YUO BE EATING FOR LUNCH TODAY?

Russ, what facts have you come up with? Wrong ones so far. The fact is you said Long is always injured and the FACT is he has played in EVERY game and made the pro bowl three straight years. Next fact, your talking about how we can't "predict" anything but you are talking about getting a shot to take Luck but with your logic predicting or counting on a player to be good we should draft anyone. That is why you draft them in the first round, to count on during the season Russ!!! Rithie played very well last year filling in at Center and will be much better this year playing beside Long again. Now what facts have you provided again. Sure, 1-15 came after a 9-7 season...wow...good call...but a 9-7 season also came after a 1-15 season. Move on to the Buffalo Bills web-site and see if they beleive your crap. You are giving us no more facts than you claim we are not giving you!

Ronnie Brown is soft..cant punch it in...Ricky was not gonna be happy with 4 carries a game....johnson may be tried at right tackle, knowing sparno...

SEMINOLE,DOUTFUL,HE WAS ON BLOG RANTING IN A DRUNK STUPER TELL 4AM,WHAT ARE YOU HAVING FOR LUNCH?

the COPS tackled him?????????????

Great point, LOL. does this guy have anything left in the tank??

Daniel Thomas fumbled on the goal line. Nuff said.

Its going to be a long season boys - can anyone say "Andrew Luck Sweepstakes"? Being a Dolphin fan in Pittsburgh sucks right now. I hate our owner - I hate our GM - I hate our coach - I hate our QB - I hate our GM's fat mentor and I hate myself for loving this team. Lets beat the Jets twice -go 2-14 and draft Luck. The NFL is a QB league.

SAM,REMBER HES ON OBAMAS "NO NEED TO WORK" PROGRAM,SO HE DONT,INSTEA HE STAY UP TILL 4AM DRUNKING AND SLEEP TILL 3PM,I GUARENTEE HE WILL BE HERE AFTER 3.LOL

Should of drafted Mallet in second and signed Bradshaw in free agency along with Bush and kept Ricky. Out of all the possibilities and senarios I'd say we ended up with one of the worst. Im losing confidence in the FO. and ive been in there corner longer than most

so if we are to believe armando...the fins had one bad goal line situation where we could not punch it in from 1 yd out on three straight plays...finally on 4th we get it done.

fast forward 4 days and now Polite, Hillard & Clay all suck and we need to find a new body to guarantee we can punch it in.

What is the guarantee that Johnson would have punched it in?....NONE.

I don't get Ireland and his outlandish player ranking system.

and as far as the goaline thing.....Tebow wouldve punched it in...just saying.

not 100% positive yet, but I'm thinking of exiling myself from this place for good.

Hopefully my last:

ValHalla!!!!

IAM SORRY.TILL 3:56.

"Daniel Thomas fumbled on the goal line. Nuff said."

Posted by: Mama

Johnson has only fumbled 15 times in his career. Maybe that's one of the tricks they want Thomas to pick up from him - ball security.

If he sticks around into the regular season (and he won't, imho), I think it says something about Thomas and it's not something good.

did he even pass the physical?

DC,

You're not wrong. Santonio for a 5th was a steal, suspension or no suspension. I wuld have done it. Having said that, I think this regime looked at Marshall coming about, they liked Bess and Hartline and they liked the kids. They wanted to see what it looked like before giving up a pick.

Still with all that being said, I still would have done it.

Our newly signed running went to anger management and can't outrun a few cops? Great pickup.Hopefully NFL defenses will be slower than police.

Yea, I have to tell you I went into Seizures on the Daniel Thomas goal line fumble... LOOKED JUST LIKE SAMMIE SMITH!

Ugh.

Ronnie should have been signed, I can not disagree more with the people who say he became tentative. How can you run forward if there is not a hole to run through? Of course you "look" tentative when there is no hole... But what the hell else are you supposed to do? Destroy the o-lineman in the back crippling the guy?

ALoco,

Sheesh...must have been a real bender for him to threaten (promise?) not to come back!

Tuna for lunch...I'm not getting any younger.

At the end of the day we are weaker at RB than last year and no better at QB than last year. Thanks guys for improving the team during the offseason. God knows you had plenty of time to devise a solid, intelligent plan.

GOOD TO TALK TO YOU ALL,BUT GOTTA WORK SO DB AND OTHERS FROM THE COALITION(GANG OF DEFEAT,DONKY BRIGADE,MARINATED ACORN GROUP) CAN POST TILL EARLY IN THE AM.GOO DAY PEOPLE.

Wait, are we any better on the O-line?

This is ridiculous

stupid is as stupid does.........the Ireland Family motto.

SAM,TUNA'S GOOD,SO IS FISH.

another mediocre player for a mediocre team

first!

Let Denver and John Elway EAT some of that money.

In a few days Denver has to pay Tebow almost 6 million in guaranteed money. That is almost all his money for the whole contract for three years.

Would like to see Ireland sign Tebow instead.
Develop him while Henne starts.

The Dolphins are SO WELL DESIGNED FOR THE WILDCAT NOW in this Pass First Offense.

Tebow would be WAY BETTER in the Wildcat than Ronnie.

Ronnie was good at first when no one knew what we were doing.

Tebow threw for almost 10,000 Yds in college and
rushed for 57 TDs.

Dolphins are ripe for the spread offense with
6 Very Good WRs

Home would make a BID for Tim Tebow now and get him for the cheap.

VY signed for 4 Million as a back up for one year.

Tebow would be a great back up for the Dolphins and their new spread offense or check downs to Bush.

Go Tebow!

Go Phins!

The reason they didn't go after holmes is because they didn't want to have to pay both holmes and marshall 10m+ and they knew that's what holmes wanted when he became a free agent. BM is a better player than holmes. Ryan actually wanted BM and only went after holmes when we got him. If you give me a choice I would take brandon marshall over holmes.

Look does anyone doubt he isn't an upgrade to Kory Sheets? You always try ti upgrade your position even if fourth string. They just want him to come in and punch in the ball from just outside the goal line.

So many armchair GM's on this blog. I guess you guys are the same one that were booing Henne and then turn around and start praising him. Reggie Bush will have a great year. Larry Johnson will have a great year. Chad Henne will have a great year.

By the way, what credentials do you guys have for being an NFL GM??

SAM,TUNA'S GOOD,SO IS FISH.

LMAOROTF, Post of the day, Gang, your thoughts?

Guess who bought him some Goldcorp stock a few weeks ago? And who had some short positions that netted some gains this summer?

Too bad my long term holdings are getting smashed :(

Easy,Terry, This is a blog of Ideas,You have your posts, so do others,Thats what makes this Blog so Popular.Even though 50% or wrong.

Pot, meet Kettle.

Home, I enjoy your posts, but couldn't disagree more with you on Tebow. I remember you not liking the cutting ties with P.white, but this just isn't the NCAA. The wildcat was OK until teams finally figured out how to defend it. A running QB isn't going to last long in the NFL.

Who really thought the phins were going into the season, as a running 1st team, with a rookie RB & an injury prone Bush ? I don't think Johnson is a longshot at all. Most of us thought Miami would sign another big body at RB. Better late than never!

Not only will Johnson likely make the team, I'd expect him to be the short yardage/goaline guy. He's insurance if Bush and/or Thomas get hurt. Sheets couldn't handle the load. They probably don't think Hilliard can which is why he never gets a serious look. Hence, the need for a guy like Johnson.

Why cut a younger, faster training camp RB(Sheets) to bring in an older workhorse? If you stop to think about it, it makes total sense.

THEY NEED ONE!

SF, Case in point Ask Pat White about the WC Vs The steelers.

I'll say this again. Living here in Jax I heard it over and over the last few days about Garrard being shown the door.
Why not trade one of our DEs to a QB-pressure hungry Jaguars for Garrard?
I'd package a deal and go for broke:
Dolphins get QB David Garrard and RB Rashad Jennings
Jaguars get DE(fill in the blank) and FS Chris Clemons.
Both teams walk away having filled their biggest needs.

But Joe, He really has'nt played for over 2 seasons.I hope he cn pick it up.

I have a feeling that Bell is in his last year & that Jones will win the FS job & Clemmons will replace Bell next season.

Clemmons isn't instinctive enough to play FS but would be a pretty good fit covering TE's & playing near the line.

Whoa,

Just slept off a HE LL of a BENDER, what's up Fin's nation?

What? Is the Blog Hit Troll talking about me already?

First of all Blog Troll that wasn't me talking to Cuban Last night. That was Fake Odinseye. I'm SURE you understand.

Secondly, I can PROVE it wasn't me. I was trashed and unconscious by 10;30 last night. I started a little early yesterday(breakfast, heh, heh.) Almost drowned in my own damn pool matter of fact.

Just for the record though, Fake Odinseye was funny and right on the money 0OoooHH!

He predicted when all your aliases would show AND in what order. He's right pretty standard simpleton routine.

Anywhoo, if my welfare check comes and my bank(the liquor store)cashes it:

I'll be back for you jack

........marcus........russ........Aloco..........Cuban Menace.............pricemaster..........etc, etc.........to infinity and PUKE(cough, cough)...........

PS: I don't like it when Fake Odin imposters me, but I'll be a Monkeys Uncle if he ain't got ya'lls number ;)

ValHalla!!!!

Joe,

Most teams don't keep 30+ year old RBs who don't play special teams as a backup RB (except the Dolphins (with Ricky Williams), now that I think of it).

Johnson looked DONE last year with Washington and wound up with only 5 carries.
