Brandon Marshall illness raises football questions also

I was just surfing the web and, going on a football site, I was reading the headlines:

Jets reach deal with Plaxico

Jets re-sign Cromartie

Bengals bring back Benson

Seahawks, Tatupu part ways

Dolphins WR admits personality disorder

Jaguars Lewis ending holdout

Which one do you see is a little out of place? I'll give you one guess.

Look, I have compassion for Brandon Marshall. I feel sympathy for him as he battles the demons of Borderline Personality Disorder. The man's life has, by his own admission, been hell the past year. He hasn't been a happy camper in the least despite being so blessed with natural gifts and worldly luxuries -- cars, big home, lots of cash, great athletic ability, wife, family.

The story of Marshall seeking help for his condition is one of courage. No doubt.

But there is a football angle that must be discussed also. And from a purely football standpoint, and the Miami Dolphins, after all, are a football team not a mental health clinic, the Marshall story has to make you cringe.

Basically, the Dolphins greatest offensive weapon from last season, and the man they are counting on to be their best offensive offensive player again this season, is admitting he is suffering from a mental illness. And while Marshall has been aggressive in seeking treatment for the disorder and believes he has it under control, he adds, "by no means am I healed or fixed."

That is scary, particularly for a team that has no second act if Marshall suffers a relapse. What happens if Marshall goes from Beast mode to Boderline Beast mode, in which he loses control again?

We will hurt with him and for him because you never want a fellow human to be so buffeted by such troubles. But Dolphins fans will also be hurting for their team because, geez, this is a guy the offense is counting on to be on the field and be 100 percent engaged for 16 games. And you should worry because the team currently has no complementary weapon to put on the field if something happens to Marshall.

Troubling.

Scary.

On a personal level.

And on a football level.

this FO is over its head. We'll win 4 games this year and we'll start over again next year. This is the life of being a dolphin fan

Good morning Dolphin fans...Not related to the Marshall discussion Armando, (I feel the same way you do about it) but the one thing I would like to know is why are we signing a def lineman when Zach Miller and Braylon Edwards are still available? Edwards would be a welcomed addition in our pathetic offense and Zach Miller would be an upgrade over all the clowns we've got playing TE right now...I really don't follow this front office...I hope I'm wrong...

Armando,
There are many times when you write something that I completely disagree with. The only reason I even come back here is because I read everything, everywhere I can about my beloved Dolphins. But your negativity, as well as the overwhelming negativity of the so-called "fans" that post here has become too much. The icing on the cake is this blog about Marshall. Football is nothing compared to a man's life and the struggles he must overcome personally. This blog is distasteful and void of any moral fiber whatsoever. As are you. I will never read another word from you. I know that doesn't matter to you, but then again, what does???

Miami cut Lionel Dotson & he has since signed with the Bills.

amazing how they sit back and watch everyone else get better. they already they are on their death bed.

they just dont want to get better, very weird organization. attendance will be at an all time low and spranao will finally be fired at leas. should go 4-12 but that wont be enough to get a.luck

I just want to know when it's going to be our time again!

2012 we can start to pick up the pieces bigt

Paul Poluszney or Lofa Tatupu ILB with Dansby would be nice

Consider this. We went into the offseason knowing the Offense needed an overhaul(coaching & talent). We addressed those needs with Reggie Bush & Brian Daboll.

I sure hope they aren't going to rely on 2 later draft picks(Gates & Clay) who are not even guaranteed to make the roster, let alone see the field.

There have been more transactions on the D side than on the O side. You have to seriously question whether Sparano & Ireland:

A. Know what they're doing
B. Have their priorities in order
C. Belong in the NFL at all

I said it in a previous thread. They have done a decent job of rebuilding. Justy like in Dallas. Making the cake if you will. But it's obvious, they are unwilling or unable to land the final pieces. The icing if you will. We need new management to put the finishing touches on.

Based on what other teams in our Division have done, I simply cannot see more than 6-7 wins. If Orton comes aboard, it might spike to 8 or 9. Regardless, not good enough. And after 4 offseasons, that's just not good enough.

Well we just have to hope they are waiting it out to add more talent I think my faith would go up a bit if we added Zach Miller and Orton in the coming days we should be afraid to spend the money and restructure some contracts if we have to. Come on now Ireland step it up!

so would orton, miller, bradshaw, edwards but we know they wont do any of it

Joe, look at what's happening with the o-line...They draft Pouncey, still unclear where he plays (G or C)...I guess it depends if O'Hara signs or not...Now Sparano says this dude Feinga(sp?) is intriguing?? This is what he said last year about Cory Procter...Sounds familiar? After Procter I guess they were also "intrigued" by Pat McQuistan, they traded for him...And Sparano is supposed to be an o-line coach...What a joke...I've been posting the same thing for the last 3 weeks...Get some guards...Yeah Pouncey is nice but you still need interior linemen...Plenty of good ones available back then...A lot less now...

the "perfect storm" happened 3 years ago when penne landed in our lap after being released. we also had an "easy schedule" and lucked out in many games. it was a "great time" for dolphans but it fooled the powers to be into a false sense of how to win in the nfl. sparano/ireland now believe you run the ball, dink&dunk but most of all you preach "no mistakes" which then immediately paralyzes your QB! you end up with a decimated oline and injuries galore as you try to impose your will. when it doesnt work you search for the only coord who had a worse offense than us and keep the same playbook and philosophy. so why will things change now??????????????

Pouncey stays at center. OHara is like 34, would be his back up and we release Berger. As long as Berger is around, we don't have a competent back up center (see last season).

I am baffled as others that we have not addressed getting an above average TE for two years now.

Borderline Personality Disorder aka "almost crazy".

Armando did you realize at least 80% of "Everyone" in every profession could qualify as "ALmost crazy? This means and your profession too. Just because you havent been "Diagnosed" doesnt mean youre exempt.

Geesh, the real kicker is that these with doctors are sporting PHD's on thier walls and the best diagnosis that they can come up with ois to tell a client he's almost crazy?

90% OF OUR ENTIRE SOCIETY COULD QUALIFY FOR "ALMOST CRAZY"! WTH DID YOU GUYS THINK BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER MEANT? NEARLY ALL OF US COULD BE DIAGNOSED AS ALMOST CRAZY, INCLUDING ARMANDO. WHAT AN OVERLY AMBIGUOUS DIAGNOSIS! LOL...

#1, they have to stop tinkering with the o-line. Even they finally realized, they have wasted too much money, draft picks, resources & time on that area.

Proof is in the pudding. After 2 years, they needed to rebuild the D. After 3 years the offense. What next?

The next logical course of action is the Management & coach.

dying are u crazy?

Even though questions linger on the oline, at least shoring up center with Pouncey for years to come is going to be a major improvement. Let's hope Jerry becomes a player and not a bust. Sparano seemed to have tones of doubt in his voice when asked about Jerry yesterday, but....training camp is young.

ARMANDO,

REMEMBER WE'VE READ MANY OF YOUR POSTS OVER THE YEARS. SO WE KNOW YOU COULD ALSO QUALIFY AS "BORDRLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER" AKA ALMOST CRAZY. LOL...

dusty bottoms,

As far as I know, Im only "Almost Crazy"! LOL...

Psychology is like virtual philosphy, fun to ponder, but has no practical value when applied to humans.

how can you run the ball without pulling guards? how can you pass block when carey and jerry whiff consistently(they cant move their feet)? how can you score on the last possesion when we dont have a 2 min offense? i do have more questions after those are answered.

IF 90% OF OUR ENTIRE SOCIETY COULD POSSIBLY QUALIFY FOR ALMOST CRAZY. THE OTHER 10% ARE CRAZY. MOSTLY THOSE ARE THE ONES WHO DONT THINK THEY ARE ALMOST CRAZY. lol...

Simon Says, I don't consider myself an o-line specialist at all...But having said that, I watched Jerry play last year and I seriously have my doubts about the guy...And he was a 3rd round pick...Can he get it done this year? I don't know. But I wouldn't bet a dime on it. I hope I'm wrong...

Montreal,

Its Sparano's faul;t for even considering he could draft an olineman 3rd rd and he would immediately come in, start, then dominate. This just doesnt often happen in the real professional football world.

in 2012,luck starting qb w/ nolan as hc and peterson as gm.

JEFF IRELAND AND TONY SPARANO COULD WELL QUALIFY FOR "ALMOST CRAZY" TOO! LOL...

MAYBE AGAIN THIS YEAR WE WILL "ALMOST" QUALIFY FOR THE PLAYOFFS!

Just because Peterson is Ross's friend, doesn't mean he will ever be our GM. He never will be. Peterson is VERY old and VERY rich, and retired. Do you really think he wants to spend his life at this point scounting college players in Pookaville?

THAT WITCH DOCTOR QUALIFIED MARSHALL AS "ALMOST CRAZY". WTH DID THEY DO, GET TOGETHER FOR A GAME OF HORSESHOE. HORSESHOE IS THE ONLY PLACE I KNOW WHERE "ALMOST" COUNTS. LOL...

ARMANDO,

ARE YOU ALMOST CRAZY? iF YOU ANSWER NO THEN WE KNOW YOURE CRAZY! LOL...

Marshall basically bought himself 3 flagrant fouls with no worries about being reprimanded, it will be tolerated because of his condition. He is playing the sympathy card with this. This did not warrant a 20 minute presser, should have been two minutes at most.

MY LUNCH TO BE;

FRIES WILD SEA BASS
ONION RINGS
BEET SALAD

CRAZY ANANA ICE CREAM .

FRIED

This was not an awareness of breast cancer situation. This was, poor me, rough childhood, and now I am rich with 9000 girlfriends and a nagging wife and I really don't like my quarterback.

i saddens me to read these posts that make fun of mental health, its severity, heck even some here doubts its very existence.

such weak minded humans and so very cruel to use it for humor or even to vent their anger over brandon's behavior.

its so taboo to the weak minds to consider. its even a debate with some of these weak minds over its legitimacy because it cant be measured with a machine or seen with an mri or diagnosed with a blood test.

nobody denies broken legs or cancer or torn cartilage and when it happens it garners sympathy. its quantifiable so therefore it exists.

when someone has a broken brain it becomes a laughing joke. its so so so weak minded.

so brandon tell everybody he has a broken brain and he has been to the broken brain doctors and they have diagnosed him with a broken brain.

somehow thats so funny to some of you.

mando you wrote a pretty good piece about it - good job. omar's was awesome and ground breaking. greg cote made a complete farce of it all on his blog today and i hope he gets fired.

the rest of you who think its so funny. please educate yourselves quickly so you can begin to be an asset to society - like brandon marshall is!!!

CRAZY BANANA ICE CREAM

marshall is very difficult to defend if you run a legit pro style offense with multiple wide outs. we never set picks for marshall or threw it before he broke open. we ran pass plays with one/two options downfield and a checkdown available. we were always in max protect because henne couldnt see/feel pressure or move his feet. later in the season henne was watching the rush (this signaled his demise as an nfl qb). i dont see anything changing this year.

Scott

If you are here, you have BPD too! Welcome to the club!

peterson will choose the next gm.

Scott, everyone here is medicated, so it's all right to make fun of Marshall

It's guys like Scott who have too much compassion that is turning the american male into a bunch of vaginas

I have a man crush on Reggie Bush. Love seeing him in shorts, he has some package!

Aloco is a habitual line stepper.

MY SUPPER TO BE REGGIE WITH WHIPPED CREAM.

2 watt, Peterson is OLD and had NO INTEREST.

Well, from Marshall's side that's what's on the table. We can take it or leave it.

ALoco is having some guy named Reggie with whipped cream for supper. And Scott thinks we make fun of the mentally ill

Sorry guys, took the weekend off. Was too tired during the week due to this whole "free agency" thing. I figured you guys would be happy with the Reggie Bush signing and that would be enough to get you off my back! You see our new billboard "Regggggie! Reggggie!" Doesn't that make you want to buy some season tickets? Or at least buy a Reggie Bush jersey! Of course we have him as #8, so buy that jersey now and when we change his # for the regular season you can buy a second one!! (Mr. Ross loves that!) Speaking of Mr. Ross, he is hoping to get Kim Kardashian to buy a piece of the Dolphins. I told him Reggie and her were broken up, but he said that was even better! Our goal at the Dolphins this year is to make sure we are the headlines at TMZ. More people watch TMZ then ESPN anyway! So no big deal if we don't make any ESPN highlights this year. Well hope everyone enjoys our big free agent signing Reggie Bush!

Love,

Jeff

Well, said Mando. I agree wholeheartedly. I will also say the whole press conference was a little unnecessary.

scott alderson, excellent post...Agree with you 100%...Ignorants will always be ignorants...

Scott and Montreal if you want to feel sorry or have compassion for someone that has a mental illness find a veteran who actually suffers from a disorder because they have been in a combat zone not some football player that makes millions playing a boys game.

@Aloco--- Come to my house, I have whipped cream.

We can feel the anger in many of these comments about Marshall's situation. Why?, is not your disorder. Ahh, the Taboo of Mental Ilness makes Most afraid.

I have a mental illness it's cheering for a losing franchise for 20 years ya I'm sure there's a disorder for that too.

bigt160, you think the only people that have mental illness are veterans?? My wife works in a crisis center, she's a psychologist...The place is full all year long. What are you talking about? It affects everybody. Not just veterans.

Very sad commentary and boards posts on this subject. Chances are that BM will be a more focused and effective player as a result of addressing his condition.

It takes alot of courage to do what BM did yesterday. My respect level for BM went way up as a result of what he shared in his press conference.

I am particularly impressed by the statement that he has a responsibility as a celebrity to speak out about this condition and raise awareness.

The board posts are pathetic really. The country is full of xenophobes, over opinionated and poorly informed people.

I'm saying that you can make up a metnal illness for anything these days. Bottom line you can take the thug out of the ghetto but you cant take the ghetto out of the thug and with that this little "mental illness" is going to give him a pass to act like an idiot.

GUYS HERE LIKE SCOTT ANDERSON WHO DONT BELIEVE YOURE ALMOST CRAZY TOO. YOU HAVE TO BE TOTALLY OUT OF YOUR MINDS!

SCOTT, WE'RE NOT BELITTLING MARSHALL. WE'RE WELCOMING HIM TO SOCIETY. 905 OF ALL OF ARE ALMOST CRAZY. GUESS YOU'RE PART OF THE 10% WHO ARE TRULY CRAZY?
