Tony Sparano on 2011 season: 'I got all confidence in world and you should, too!'

The NFL season is still a dozen days away but I'm ready for it. Fact is, most anyone who listened to coach Tony Sparano deliver the keynote speech today during the club's 2011 Kickoff Luncheon is ready for it after hearing promises of excitement and daring-do, and winning.

In other words, this was just what the doctor ordered for fans hungry for some good news peppered with a little bravado.

"This 2011 team is going to be exciting," Sparano said. "They're going to have a great attitude ... It is going to have excitment. We have an outstanding defense. We have good players. We have an enthusiastic, outstanding, attacking offense. Our special teams is attacking. This is all on the upbeat right now. Everybody in the building in full of passion. Full of passion right now. Excited. The other thing we have is daring people."

Cool. On the chow line of things I want to chew on, give me some enthusiastic, outstanding, attacking offense every time. Also, give me victories.

And Sparano promised those, too.

"Here's what I'm here to tell you," he began. "I've seen a lot of football teams and been part of more than my share -- unfortunately. But I'll say this to you, a lot of them have been good teams. I've been around teams before, seen what they're made up of and this football team right here, is a good team. There are good people in that locker room. We got good people in the room, good chemistry, they give off a good vibe, they enjoy being around each other. I'm walking through the locker room last night at 8 o'clock at night. We broke at about 5 o'clock and there are still guys hanging out with each other. That's a good sign. That tells me an awful lot.

"I'm going to say this to you and I know that I'm in public and I'm don't say a whole lot, I'm one of those take everything, give nothing kind of guys. This team will win. That's not a surprise to them. They've heard it."

Other highlights from the speech?

"This team is going to build its own tradition."

"This journey won't go without problems. It won't go without those things. But this group is a pretty daring group. A daring group, and they'll push forward."

Sparano called his team a "heck of a group." And, said, that group "will take the next step."

"I have all the confidence in the world," he said, "and you should, too!"

So I guess if you were a Cincy fan you'd throw all objectivity out the window as well. To each his onw. I'll bet you were doing jumping jacks the last 10 preseasons. Me no. I still have the last several games of 2010 in my mind deflating my enthusiasm.

Just like TS, I'm a show me what you can do guy. My philosophy is no different that his.

Yo facts,

Who made you the blog police? odin's been here a lot longer than you have. I must've missed it, but it sounds to me like he beat you in an argument or something. Nothing new about that. Ever hear of 'free speech'?

The difference between you and I is that you are obsessed with who is right or wrong. I'm not remotely. I'm just analyzing what I see. I will show up post season whether I am right or wrong. I'd say 80% of all predictions my all pundits, ex jocks and arm chair GM's are wrong. I have no fear of being wrong.

For many here, it is a sissy spitting contest. I passed that phase way before puberty.

OKAY! I JUST DRAFTED HENNE WITH MY FIRST PICK OVERALL ON MY FANTASY DRAFT B/C OF THAT SPEECH! YEAAHHH !!! TWO FIST PUMPS AND A HALF FOR A 8-8 SEASON W/0 PLAYOFFS!!
I actually like Sparano...as Lil'John's backup singer! OOOOKAY!

Ѫ,

Right, I guess that's why you jumped on a poster about his grammar. In truth, that and your negativity is what prompted my response in the first place.

I'm glad to hear about your maturity and wish you well with it. However you may find that maturity sometimes clashes with negativity. Or you may not.

if it weren't for the OL and the running game I'd agree totally with TS. really hoping to see some good signs from those departments tommorrow.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

So I guess if you were a Cincy fan you'd throw all objectivity out the window as well. To each his onw.

-NO! But I'd surely be ROOTING for Andy Dalton and the rest of what they call the Bungles. I also wouldn't wait until they started winning to wear my Jersey! Unlike you, I LOVE MY PHINS and I'm PROUD to be a FAN!

I'll bet you were doing jumping jacks the last 10 preseasons. Me no.

-NO again! The last 10 pre seasons we weren't unvailing a new offense that has helped our young QB start to show some promise. This year, moreso than others, was/is a very important pre season, try to keep up.

I still have the last several games of 2010 in my mind deflating my enthusiasm.

NO, yet again! Unlike you, I use the last several games of last season to gauge any possible improvements, therefor inflating my enthusiasm. Re-read that last sentence SchlebRock!

My opinion of your cognitive abilities drops with every response.

Yes, someone blogging too damn lazy to add periods where they belong is not only pathetic but shouldn't be burdening others to read such trash.

Your idea of negativity is grossly offbase. I gave my objective view, agree or not, I am not going to just come on here sugar coating everything just to make the fragile egos here happy.

Many of you are blogging in wet diapers, that is obvious.

Everything is about who is right or wrong, or who can out quip the other. It's purely infantile.

Jax and Od are just looking for cotton candy bloggers. I won't waste another second responding to either of you.

Is "plodding" a negative description of an RB? I would say yes.

PS, has it occurred to you, in your maturity, that the person in question is, I dunno, maybe a kid or somebody for whom english is a second language? Or maybe he was using a phone to type, or maybe your problem is that he just didn't ask you what your expectations were.

Very Funny, Ha ha. You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

During Armando's extended vacation LAST YEAR, I was permanently banned from that sorry excuse of a sports blog. Bunch of wussbags over there think it's sacrilage to disagree with Omar! Omar makes Armando look like Albert Fvcking Einstein!

I went there with the intentions of beng banned and I achieved my goal. Thats the most sissified set up I've ever seen. Thanks, but ah, NO THANKS!

Been there done that!

Having said all that, the only person I really try to bully is the Blog Hit Troll. You know who I'm talking about don'tcha(wink, wink)?

I remember last year's keynote speech and this one is very different.

"The 2010 team is going to deliver winning football! With bend but don't break defense, grind it out ball control offense. Think 3 yards and a cloud of dust which will put is on position to kick field goals and play the field position games.

We have 2 outstanding kickers in Brandon fields who will punt the ball 60 yards and pin our opponents deep into their own goal. Our MVP Dan Carpenter can kick a field goal from a mile away!

Also don't forget our wildcat package! I can feel the excitement now. Fins to the left Fins to the right.

Lets go Get em.

Tony Sparano

I can root for my team without closing my eyes to what is going on around me. There must be some reason nobody outside of Miami sees much progress on the team. Every national media outlet has Miami as 3rd or 4th in the division.

Lets see why:
1. Owner tried to fire the coach and failed.
2. Coach tried to fire the QB and failed.
3. New OC, new RB's, new Oline, expected to perform after a very short preseason.

All logical reasons I have no fear of considering. Could we prove the outsiders wrong? Sure we can. I need to see convincing evidence before I can get more optimistic about the coming season.

It isn`t a matter of who is right or wrong, it`s blind faith that your team can be the healthy one left standing at Seasons end. I bet if you asked the fans in St Louis in 99 if they would have taken a bet on their team winning with a journeymen Q.B. in K.Warner they would have backed off. How about the 2000 Ravens with Dilfer, the 2001 Pats with Brady or the 2003 Bucs with Johnson.

The point isn`t if Henne can be the man just enough of a manager to know when to get out of the way and by the way tell me what NFL fan outside of his City doesn`t hold hope outside of his City unless he`s in Det., the new 99 Browns, Cinn. and Houston??

i just checked the game schedule for this week on nfl.com game pass and it doesn't show tomorrow's game as being blacked out. so, maybe it's on there in real time. hope so.

fin4life,
you forgot about the 1987 redskins with doug williams.

Wow, I'm almost in shock. A normal, mature, objective response came my way.

Yes, just about every teams fans has the highest hopes this time of year. Myself, being human and with a good memory, have had too many false hopes preseason with this team. I don't like the disappointment they bring. I'm just stating how things look to me at this point. If they do better that I think, if they compete, I'll be stoked. I've just gotten to a point I need this team to prove something to me in real games before my hopes get raised. A 3-1 start would do a lot to get my attention. A 2-2 start would get my attention if we at least play NE competitively.

Hoping for the best but today as I was listening to the sports talk show that is out of Atlanta, I live just south of there, and they had Chris Mort on and they were commenting on the "Gator Day" we have planned when we play Denver. Needless to say they all were wondering what the FO was thinking with their thought process. Things like that keep people from believing in us. Maybe they are thinking if they create an away game atmosphire we will win considering our record last year. BRILLIANT! They may have outsmarted themselves...again.

I had to feed the dogs, did I miss anything?

LOL that Elway is just amazing...he must be in his fifties.

PROMISE? PLEASE say you PROMISE!

PS: I'd rather read a post with some football knowledge and no punctuation whatsoever as opposed to some of your ridiculously negative garbage.

If you really are objective, go back and read some of your obviously BIASED "stuff". Proofs in the Pudding!

I am sick of these mindless haters. If you really are a Dolphins fan, give Sparano and the team a chance, support them, lift them, do what you can for them - in other words, root for the team. If you just want to talk smack about Coach Sparano and the Dolphins, go ahead, but don't ever tell us you root for the Dolphins when you obviously don't give a damn.

i wish i could give all the haters a virus...all you jest fans are lucky that i dont know how to put viruses in your computer. If i could do that then i would...maybe that would stop you from coming of a dolphins blog to talk sh/t.

^on

True Dolphans rise up!!!

Don't want to hear the talk. Talk is cheap. Beat the Patriots Tony and then I will get excited.

1987 was a strike year and every team missed 3 games played by SCABS but there is no neglecting Doug Willams and the Skins who got no love and were given a ZERO shot. All he did was throw for 4 TD passes in the 2nd Qrt. alone, NFL record.

Getting on the Wiliams thing, no NFL team thought enough of Warren Moon to draft him and if not for the monumental meltdown by the Oiers in that 91 playoff game vs. SB TURD Buffalo I really think the Houston team has a shot vs. Wash.

i don't think it's blind faith to think your team has a chance to make the playoffs if you follow them on a regular basis and you keep up to snuff on what is going on within the team. yeah, a bunch of $h!t took place during this offseason with ross and sparano and henne hasn't looked good the past two seasons but, if you were looking at the situation objectively, you can see that the organization is trying to put together a winner for its fans. you can see by the draft picks they have made, the FA acquisitions they have made and the coaches they have hired. if you're still stuck on guys that were drafted by past regimes or brought in as FA's by past regimes you're missing the point. this is not the same team. it's being built solid and they started with the defense. they brought in mike nolan and he made the defense better from day one. they played extremely well last year, despite the dropped int's. they have the deepest d-line in the league, a solid group of linebackers and some pretty good db's. there is no questioning the validity of this defense. defense keeps the game close.
as far as the offense goes it continues to be a work in progress but you can see that they are trying to build a solid offensive line like they did with the defense with mike pouncey at center, jake long at left tackle and incognito at left guard. still a little ways to go there but i believe they will get it right.
at qb, you've got to agree that the biggest problem with henne was henning. kim bokamper said it today on the finsiders with jeff darlingto as guest, "there's no doubt that henne's performance was hampered by his inability to audible at the line of scrimmage. if a run is called and you can't audible out of it and you know you're going to fail what does that do to your confidence. but, if you can audible out of the play to another play that can be successful it builds confidence. if henne is successful when he does that the guys on the offense are going to look to him as the leader of the offense." i would much rather take the opinion of a former dolphin player than guys like chris mortenson or armando.
finally, the receiver corps is a solid group of guys. they now have speed in numbers and it is going to be tough for sparano to make a decision on some of these guys. my hope is that both wallace and moore stay. if these guys can come on and gates gets involved maybe they can trade hartline.
many have questioned the teams decision to part ways with ronnie and ricky but i think is was the right thing to do. the team is looking for a new identity; one that exudes a certain amount of confidence if not cockiness and one that shows a bit of toughness on the offense. neither one of those guys fit into the plans for this team and if you're going to argue about bush being hurt alot you must have a short memory when it comes to ronnie brown.

The Jets blog is newyorkjets.com (easy) go there aready and tell your fellow trolls that Henne is 3-1 vs. Sancheez and in my opinion would be 4-0 if not for Jason Allen who blew that game 3 last year wide open with his play!!

i'm thinking that once gates begins to get comfortable returning kicks he's going to be dangerous.

Only here can you find Dolphins fans who expect 3-13. I suppose they're living in the past. This is now however, a bright shiny new season to play with. Look at that blur from our speed guys. Feel the visceral pleasure as Cameron Wake pummels Brady and the rest of the patsies into the turf of Joe Robbie Field at Sun Life Stadium. Hear the roar of deprived Miami fans as we stomp the living daylights out of our supposed nemesis. You know what Brady is going to see in his rearview mirror that Monday night? 'I maim' written on Wake and JT's jerseys.

I maim is Miami backwards, for slower bloggers (you know who you are).

What? Oh wait, I get it, Yeah, Duh-LOL!

Jax, that's awesome. I never noticed that before. Duh(for real this time-LOL)

I MAIM!!!!

ross and dee don't need to have any kind of show on monday night because there will be enough fireworks when the defense is on the field beating the crap out of brady, welker and chad ochostinko.

I was thinking the same way.

I didn't think he was refering to you either Fin4.

What's up Bro?

forgot to change my name back. it's still there from the groupy thing.

You stupids peoples.

I checked my crystal balls, and they say MIami wins New Englund, 13-12 on Mondays night.

Henne wins Gillette's Close Shave of the Game.

it would just be nice for nolan to figure out belichek's offense and beat him every time they go head to head.

when you think about it new england's offense is the biggest threat. the defense is avg. at best but the offense keeps it off the field a lot and well rested.
it's going to be interesting to see how well their defense performs in this game.

i'm thinking that once gates begins to get comfortable returning kicks he's going to be dangerous.

I don't know who you are, but I like your name and I like your style! ROTFLMAO!

Jax, odin,

I apologize guys been reading alot of negativity.

dm1,

Agreed. Its all about Henne taking what they give, and if not, take it!!!!

Hey! Debbie Downers,

We've been making progress every year since Huizenga cleared out.
Another year without Huizenga's bad karma can only be a positive.
Cheer up mates. Don't be scared.

duh, take it anyway, I meant lol

Belichek owns Sparano. Brains vs rocks. No way we win that game.

fin4,

No problem, didn't mean anything toward you. I don't think I've ever had a problem with a 'blue user' before. Certainly meant no disrespect to you.

Awww, a groupie of my own. I'm flattered. Thank you so.

belichek likes to "play chess" when it comes to the way he calls a game. i wonder if the fins would be better served to watch the way the pats offense played vs tampa rather than vs detroit. is it possible, with the monday night game being so close, that he thought of the detroit game as the perfect opportunity to give the fins some "tape" of his offense and how detroit was able to shut it down only to come out and play the game more like they did against tampa with the up tempo offense that didn't allow tampa to get set on defense. just thinking out loud and maybe i'm stil stuck on the grassy knoll thing.

however, if detroit's defense is for real it bodes well for my fantasy team because it picked them and the fins defense.
